[lfc-news] Reds release Pelle - Official Site

Official LFC Website, 17 June 2005
REDS RELEASE PELLE
By Steve Hunter

Argentine defender Mauricio Pellegrino has officially left Liverpool
after he was told he would not be getting a new contract.

Pellegrino rejoined Rafael Benitez when he moved from Valencia to
Liverpool in January 2005 on a short term contract. He played 12 games
for Liverpool with his last appearance coming against Aston Villa on the
final day of last season. One of his best matches in a red shirt came in
the 2-1 Anfield derby win over Everton.

In an exclusive interview with Liverpoolfc.tv upon signing for the club
Pellegrino predicted that Rafael Benitez would bring back the good times
to Liverpool.

Pellegrino said: "I feel Benitez will bring trophies to Liverpool. This
club has very good players like Jamie Carragher and I think in the
future Liverpool will win more trophies."

[lfc-news] Baros: I want to stay at Anfield - Echo

Liverpool Echo, 18 June 2005
I want to stay at Anfield - Baros
By David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

MILAN BAROS wants to stay and fight for his first team place at Anfield,
despite bids by boss Rafael Benitez to bring in Dirk Kuyt from Feyenoord
and Peter Crouch from Southampton.

The Czech striker, with just one first team goal since Christmas, looked
likely to be a victim of Benitez's squad rebuilding this summer.

Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas claimed that he and boss of the French
champions, Gerard Houllier, planned to meet Baros in Prague this week.

But back in his homeland, Baros said he doesn't want to leave Anfield.

Dalibor Lacina, one of the agents acting for him, said: "Milan is now on
holiday in the Czech Republic and he doesn't think it would be good to
leave Liverpool now.

"At Liverpool there is still a lot of euphoria after that unexpected
Champions League triumph, and also the club has been awarded a place in
next season's Champions League. So Baros prefers to stay at Liverpool
these days.

"There are many calls from the Lyon representatives to our agency, but
as I hinted that meeting would have been good for nothing at present.

"And also Milan is not under pressure to make a transfer as he still has
one year certainly at Liverpool and as I know he wants to fight for his
place in the squad."

Liverpool have at least successfully engineered the departure of one
striker.

El- Hadji Diouf has completed a £3.5m switch to Bolton Wanderers,
signing a four- year contract.

Bolton boss Sam Allardyce said: "Diouf has had a turbulent last few
years, but now he can concentrate on football.

"He was a revelation last season and now we will give him the platform
to become one of Europe's top strikers again."

[lfc-news] Real employ usual tactics in attempt to lure Gerrard - Independent

The Independent, 17 June 2005
Real employ usual tactics in attempt to lure Gerrard
By Patrick McCurdy in Madrid

Steven Gerrard may have hinted that he wants to sign a new contract with
Liverpool, but Real Madrid are hoping to turn the England midfielder's
head and tempt him away from Anfield. The Spanish club have already
begun the first step in their tried and tested tactics in order to
secure the player they believe has all the credentials to become their
next galactico.

As with Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and David Beckham the club is using the
Spanish sports press, and in particular the top-selling daily Marca, to
keep Gerrard's name in the headlines in the hope that the interest will
put pressure on both the player and Liverpool ahead of contract
negotiations.

Photographs of the Liverpool captain have been splashed across the front
page of Marca twice this week and Real's interest has occupied more
column inches than any other story. The paper caught up with Gerrard on
holiday in Ibiza and got him to agree to being photographed with the
Real midfielder Guti, who was at the same resort. The headline read:
"Are you coming?" alongside a picture of the two players shaking hands.

Gerrard, however, refused to talk about his future. "I don't know
anything about any interest from Real Madrid and I prefer not to speak
about it," he said.

But Guti, who has said he wants to move to England because of his lack
of first-team chances, said: "I've seen the reports that Real want
Gerrard. He's an excellent midfielder and has won the European Cup. He's
a very complete player."

Real will offer Gerrard a salary of £4m a year and aim to exploit their
links with his agents, SFX. Marca say Real have earmarked 27 June as a
key date, because if Gerrard, who has two years left on his contract,
has not signed a new deal by pre-season training they will make a move.

Rick Parry, Liverpool's chief executive, said: "We're not going to put a
timescale on talks but, like Steve, we'd like the situation resolved
sooner rather than later."

[lfc-news] Mandic in spotlight as Fifa looks into Kewell's move to Liverpool - Independent

The Independent, 17 June 2005
Mandic in spotlight as Fifa looks into Kewell's move to Liverpool
By Matthew Beard

Fifa has launched an investigation into Harry Kewell's transfer to
Liverpool, which was the subject of a High Court libel trial that
collapsed yesterday.

Lawyers from football's world governing body are investigating the
legality of the £5m move which took Kewell from Leeds United to
Liverpool in July 2003. It is examining whether the clubs were in breach
of Fifa regulations in dealing with Kewell's personal manager, Bernie
Mandic, who is not a licensed agent. Fifa opened the investigation,
which should be concluded by the new season, after it was passed
documents by the Football Association, which says the incident is out of
its jurisdiction.

The High Court jury heard that Mandic had dealings with both clubs after
Kewell was put up for sale at the start of 2003. Notes made by
Liverpool's chief executive, Rick Parry, confirmed that he had been in
talks with Mandic about the player's transfer fee. The court also heard
that Leeds United's chairman, Professor John Mackenzie, was also dealing
with Mandic, who claimed that Leeds even proposed that the player's
loyalty bonus be paid to the club via a tax haven.

Mandic said that as Kewell's manager he was not bound by Fifa rules.
Instead, his brother, Nicolas, signed the deal but Fifa rules prevent
clubs from using a non-licensed agent.

[lfc-news] Lineker libel trial collapses after jury fails to reach verdict - Independent

The Independent, 17 June 2005
Lineker libel trial collapses after jury fails to reach verdict
By Matthew Beard

The High Court libel trial that was prompted by Gary Lineker's remarks
about a £5m Premiership transfer has collapsed.

The jury of 12 was discharged on the seventh day of the case after
failing to reach a majority verdict on whether the article in The Sunday
Telegraph by the former footballer turned pundit defamed the Liverpool
player Harry Kewell.

Lawyers for Mr Kewell brought the case against the Match of the Day
presenter, saying that he had been portrayed as a "knave" who was guilty
of dishonourable conduct over the transfer from Leeds United to
Liverpool in the summer of 2003.

After the jury was discharged, Mr Lineker said to reporters: "It looks
like a replay. I can't say anything else because I don't know what is
going to happen."

Costs for the case so far, estimated at £250,000 combined for both
sides, will be carried forward to a possible retrial. The collapse of a
libel trial is highly unusual. The judge, Mr Justice Eady, said he had
not presided over such an outcome for 18 years. Mr Kewell's lawyer,
Chris Farnell, said: "I think it clearly proves that Harry Kewell had a
strong case to bring ... I think there has been a big celebrity factor here"

The trial has shed further light on the dealings of players and agents
in transfers in the world's richest football league. Mr Kewell's
personal manager, Bernie Mandic, was acting for all three parties.

He was a middleman for Leeds and was in talks with Liverpool to cut Mr
Kewell's fee, on the understanding that he pocketed 50 per cent of any
saving for the Merseyside club.

Mr Mandic, through his company Max Sport, was paid £2m of the £5m
transfer fee and received 5 per cent of Kewell's annual earnings, which
amounted to £87,500 in the first year alone of the player's five-year
contract.

In addition, Sydney-based Sports Corp International (SCI), a company run
by Mr Mandic's brother Nicolas and whom Mr Mandic works for as a
freelance consultant, was paid £1m on the deal by Liverpool, the buying
club.

Mr Mandic's earnings came at a time when the clamour for the signature
of Mr Kewell - a gifted striker also capable of playing in midfield -
involved a virtual Who's Who of elite clubs in Britain and on the
Continent. Mr Mandic admitted in court that he "sat back" and let the
calls come in from interested clubs.

During the trial, the court was told Mr Kewell paid little attention to
the transfer fee - as long as he got the 20 per cent pay rise - and was
unaware that Mr Mandic was charging up to 80 per cent of his £2m fee for
work in connecting Leeds with a feeder club, Sydney Olympic, a system
that failed to materialise.

It also emerged that Mr Lineker had not written the newspaper column
first hand - a journalist had.

[lfc-news] Benitez keeps cool over Valencia court case - Post

Liverpool Daily Post, 16 June 2005
Benitez keeps cool over Valencia court case

LIVERPOOL coach Rafael Benitez remains calm in spite of the ongoing
legal battle with his former club Valencia.

Benitez, who led Liverpool to the Champions League title last month, was
sued by the Spanish club for breach of contract after moving to Anfield
in the summer of 2004 with one year left on his contract with La Liga side.

Earlier this week, Valencia postponed the trial set to begin on June 13
until February 2006.

"The lawsuit was filed by Valencia and not by us," said Benitez. "They
are the ones who have wanted to change the date and we are in no hurry."

The 45-year-old won the Spanish title in his first season in charge of
Valencia in 2001 and added a double of league and the UEFA Cup two years
later.

"I get tributes in Almendralejo, Tenerife and Parla (where he coached
previously) and yet in Valencia, where I have won more titles and I have
left a lasting impression, I have to go back there to deal with a
lawsuit," he said..

The Madrid-born coach has reiterated that he always intended to
compensate Valencia.

"I had no inconvenience then in compensating Valencia," he added.. "But
the problem was brought about with the club deciding to withhold my
settle-ment fee that was agreed after the completion of my contract and
which is sacred to any worker."

Benitez says not even the appointment of new Valencia president Juan
Soler, who took over the hot-seat following the resignation of president
Jaime Orti last October, has helped to bring about an end to the dispute.

"He (Soler) doesn't know how to stop it," admitted Benitez. "He has been
over-come by this situation. Both lawyers have spoken to each other and
it appeared things were speeding up but they don't know how to find a
way out."

[lfc-news] Diouf joins Bolton - Echo

Liverpool Echo, 16 June 2005
Diouf joins Bolton

BOLTON have completed the signing of controversial Senegalese striker
El-Hadji Diouf from Liverpool for an undisclosed fee.

The 24-year-old has signed a four-year contract at the Reebok Stadium
after spending last season there on loan.

Diouf, who made his name during Senegal's impressive 2002 World Cup
campaign, scored nine goals in 27 league appearances last season as
Wanderers qualified for the UEFA Cup.

[lfc-news] Frustrated Benitez to step up chase for Kuyt - Post

Liverpool Daily Post, 16 June 2005
Frustrated Benitez to step up chase for Kuyt
By David Prior, Daily Post Staff

RAFAEL BENITEZ will step up his attempts to bring Feyenoord striker Dirk
Kuyt to Anfield as he looks to relieve a frustrating summer in the
transfer market so far.

The Liverpool manager is finding it difficult to make any headway as he
plans an overhaul of his side in time for the new season, with his
transfer kitty of around £20million allowing little room for manouervre.

He has, however, made the 24-year-old Kuyt his number one target - but
only if he can force Feyenoord down from their current £10m valuation to
around £7-8m.

Kuyt, who scored 29 goals last season in the Dutch league, has already
voiced his desire to come to Merseyside but unless Liverpool can lower
his club's asking price, Benitez will have to look elsewhere.

But he will mount one last effort to persuade Feyenoord to release their
star striker and claim a player he has wanted for some time.

The Spaniard has already had to cool his interest in Peter Crouch after
Southampton demanded £7m for the tall frontman's services.

And reports in Spain yesterday suggested Real Madrid were monitoring
Benitez's difficulties closely - and were prepared to test his
willingness to keep hold of Steven Gerrard.

Real are known to have placed the Liverpool captain at the top of their
shopping list and, one report claimed, would test the Anfield club's
resolve in their upcoming contract negotiations with Gerrard - and then
offer highly--rated Juanfran as part of any deal.

Gerrard this week insisted "the ball is in Liverpool's court" regarding
his new deal, which he confirmed he intends to sign before the start of
next season.

Ideally, Benitez wants Gerrard to stay, but he is also understood to be
interested in several Real players - including winger Juanfran - and
will face a difficult decision were Real to submit a £30m-plus bid for
his skipper.

Unlikely to interest Benitez, however, is Luis Figo.

Qatar club Al Rayyan claim they are in a bidding war with Liverpool for
the 32-year-old, who could become available on the cheap this summer,
albeit on high wages.

His financial demands would probably put a strain on Liverpool, and
Benitez told the El Mundo Deportivo newspaper:

"There are many people at Real Madrid that we are aware of, but we
really know our limitations."

Raul was also suggested as a target last week, but he is considered by
president Florentino Perez as the embodiment of the Spanish giants and
seems destined to spend his entire career in Madrid.

"There are players that cannot leave and there are others we do not
want," Benitez added.

Jamie Carragher, meanwhile, has backed Benitez to build a team capable
of winning the Premiership title - the last of their 18 league crowns
was in the old First Division in 1990.

"We want to qualify for the Champions League group stages, but we also
want to challenge for the title," said Carragher.

"I am sure the manager will be looking to change things because he has
come from Valencia who won the league, so he's used to winning."

[lfc-news] Reds cancel Japan tour - Echo

Liverpool Echo, 16 June 2005
Reds cancel Japan tour
By Rob Brady, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL today confirmed they have cancelled their pre-season tour of
Japan because it clashes with their Champions League qualifying games.

The Reds had arranged two friendly matches in Japan at the end of July,
but these have had to be scrapped following UEFA's decision to allow
them to defend their European Cup title.

Instead of a high profile tour of Japan, the Reds will play the first
leg of their Champions League first round qualifier on July 12/ 13, with
the return match on July 19/20.

Chief executive Rick Parry said: "We are very sorry to announce the
cancellation of our tour to Japan because it clashes with our possible
involvement in the second round of qualifiers for the Champions League.

"We've explored ways to fulfil our commitment, but had to cancel."

Liverpool Echo, 15 June 2005
The Carragher clone factory
By David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

RAFA BENITEZ is aiming to put the passion back into Anfield - by signing
a team of Jamie Carraghers!

The Reds' boss has adopted the Kop chant as his policy in the transfer
marker this summer.

Throughout last season's Champions League winning campaign, the Anfield
faithful sang: "We all dream of a team of Carraghers!"

And Benitez has said: "I want to go to the market thinking about players
with passion as well as ability, then I know that we will do better
things in the future.

"My plan is to improve the reserve team for next season and to have some
more players ready for the first team.

"As a big club you need to increase your level to look for the best
players in the world, and we are trying to find some players for
different positions. But the most important thing is to find skilful
players and players with character.

"If we want to increase our level away from home we need that type of
player to suit our style of play.

"You need players like Jamie Carragher, for example, with passion. We
are trying to find, if possible, both.

"I have said many times Carragher has been the best defender in England
this season - he is maybe more important than John Terry at Chelsea."

Carragher's place in Benitez's plans is assured, but Liverpool's player
of the season is taking nothing for granted.

"Playing for Liverpool always puts you under pressure because you
realise the club is always going to be linked with good players," he
explained.

"They're one of the top clubs in Europe and always looking to improve
the team. But you only have to look at the Treble team.

"The players had great success, but a season after that, half the team
was gone and now the club is looking to improve again. My motivation is
just to make sure I am always in the team whoever they bring in.

"We want to qualify for the Champions League group stages, but we also
want to challenge for the league next time."

Boss Benitez hopes that aim can be achieved, by improving the output
from a number of key figures next season.

The Spanish conquistador went on: "Cisse is a quick player. We need to
see that when he is fit and that, hopefully, will be next season.

"Morientes has not really been fit because he went six months without
playing at Real Madrid. But we have confidence in him because he is a
skilful player who is good in the air.

"Here in England it is more physical, and he needs to improve his
physical level, but we will see the best of Fernando next season.

"Luis Garcia scored good goals in Spain. He scored 16 goals for me when
I managed Tenerife in the second division, and he likes to score more.

"Steven Gerrard is a key player for us. He's the captain, but although
he's so good, he can play better.

"I am sure he is not very happy with his season because he knows that he
can play better.

"We lost Gerrard and Xabi for three months and it was difficult for
Steve with all the rumours circulating about his future. But next season
will be different for both of them."

Liverpool Echo, 15 June 2005
Gunners in to scupper Reina deal
By David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

ARSENAL are reported to be trying to hijack Liverpool's signing of
Villareal goalkeeper Jose Reina.

The Reds looked to have the £6m shot-stopper in the bag, with the player
himself expressing his excitement at the prospect of playing for the
European champions.

But Reina's agent, Manuel Garcia Quilon, has now revealed the Reds have
rivals for his signature, believed to be The Gunners.

"I have had an offer from another English Premiership team. At the
moment I cannot say where he'll be playing next season.

"If Liverpool don't resolve the difficulties the saga could take a
surprising turn," he said.

It is unclear what exactly those "difficulties" are, but the player's
representatives could be holding out for more money.

The player himself appears to have his heart set on a move to Anfield.

Reina said: "Everything is in the hands of the clubs and my agent. I am
excited about joining Liverpool but until the contract is signed I can't
be sure what will happen."

Liverpool are already planning for Reina's anticipated arrival, with
Chris Kirkland ready to be allowed to join West Bromwich Albion on-loan.

Baggies' boss Bryan Robson has confirmed his interest in the Reds'
goalkeeper. "We are interested in signing Chris and I think it would be
for a certain amount of time," he said.. "I hope to have him over for
training so we can assess his fitness. If it is alright then there could
be a possible loan deal. "I am hoping to have talks this week and a deal
is something we are looking at."

The Reds also look set to finally call time - for good - on the Anfield
career of controversial striker El-Hadji Diouf.

The £10.7m signing spent all of last season on-loan at Bolton, and has
told the African press he will be moving to the Reebok permanently. "I'm
going to sign for Bolton for four years," Diouf told Senegalese
newspaper L'Observateur.

"It gives me great pleasure. I am very happy to be able to play for
Bolton next season. "I believe that I am at a club where people have
confidence in me. The coach, the doctor, everybody."

Diouf is in Senegal for a World Cup qualifier against Togo in Dakar on
Saturday.

The Guardian, 15 June 2005
Liverpool success nets £20.5m
By Dominic Fifield

Premiership clubs, led by the European champions Liverpool, were three
of the top four earners in last season's Champions League, though
Manchester United were not among them.

Figures released by Uefa yesterday reveal that Liverpool generated
£20.5m from TV and media revenues, as well as performance bonuses, en
route to winning the trophy in Istanbul last month. Chelsea and Arsenal,
who secured £18.8m and £15.7m respectively, came second and fourth in
the table of earnings, with the English clubs' dominance punctured only
by the beaten finalists Milan, who claimed £17.5m.

Some £277m was distributed by Uefa between the 32 clubs who qualified
for last season's competition, with that money made up of bonuses for
wins and progress through the rounds, as well as each country's pool for
media and sponsorship revenues. They do not take into account funds
generated through ticket sales. Yet United, who were eliminated by Milan
in the first knockout phase, slipped behind Lyon, Bayern Munich and
Werder Bremen to register as eighth highest earners with £10.9m.

"The figures show how important success on the pitch is," said Henk
Potts, a finance analyst for Barclays stockbrokers. "Manchester United
had a poor season in Europe last year and that is reflected in the
figures. Malcolm Glazer will want the club to be rising pretty rapidly
up the earnings table but to do that he has to invest in players. That's
the difficulty facing every club: how much to invest in players to bring
in even more money."

Celtic, as Scotland's sole representative in the competition, earned £7m
despite failing to qualify from their group.

"This does show that English football is the dominant financial force in
Europe and the value of the Champions League TV contracts to the clubs
who take part," Potts added. "The earnings from the Premier League are
very important but the Champions League is very much the big cash cow of
modern football. If you can make it to the Champions League for several
seasons, then it really is the road to riches."

Liverpool effectively earned as much from their run to the Champions
League final as they did from Premiership TV rights last season, with
English clubs benefiting from the highest broadcasting fees, given that
they have two companies - Sky and ITV - covering matches.

Official LFC Website, 14 June 2005
RAFA SURPRISED BY FERGIE LETTER
By Paul Eaton

Rafael Benitez has revealed he received an unusual congratulatory letter
from Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson following the Reds' Champions
League success last season.

Benitez admits he was swamped with 'well done' messages from friends and
colleagues throughout the footballing world following the magnificent
events in Istanbul, but he was left slightly bemused by Fergie's note.

He told Marca: "I received congratulations from people all over England
and Spain.

"Ferguson sent me a very strange one with a tactical evaluation - on his
personalised paper - of Liverpool's performance in the whole
competition, and particularly the final."

Benitez is now looking to the future and determined to improve his squad
ahead of the new season.

But he insists new Valencia midfielder Edu was never on his target list,
despite speculation to the contrary in Spain.

"The next objective is to make a good team who can be competitive," he
added.

"The reality is that we have a lot to improve, that there have to be
some changes. It's necessary to revitalise the squad and strengthen some
positions."

He added: "Despite what was said, we did not make any efforts to sign
Edu, it was part of the efforts to try and undermine us," he added.

Liverpool Echo, 14 June 2005
Smicer bound for Bordeaux

ISTANBUL hero Vladimir Smicer has signed a two-year contract with Bordeaux.

The Czech international passed a medical at the Parc Lescure yesterday
and agreed terms on his switch from Anfield.

"Bordeaux is a beautiful seaside city and Les Girondins were always at
the top of the French league," the 32-year-old said. "The last season
was not ideal for them. They will want to get back to the top and I will
be glad to be able to help them."

Smicer revealed Bordeaux had been interested in acquiring his services
last summer but the player had to have an operation on a knee injury.

He added: "Out of all the offers I had, I like this one the most.

"Bordeaux wanted me last year after the European Championships but I was
sidelined for half a season. Their interest remained and that is the
most important thing for any player when seeking a transfer."

Smicer spent three years at Lens before moving to Anfield for
£4.2million in 1999.

Liverpool Daily Post, 14 June 2005
Finnan may face death drive charge
By Kate Mansey, Daily Post Staff

LIVERPOOL FC footballer Stephen Finnan has been arrested on suspicion of
causing death by dangerous driving, it emerged yesterday.

Finnan was arrested more than three months after being involved in a
collision in his black Range Rover on West Derby Road, Tuebrook, which
resulted in the death of a pensioner.

But details of the police action only came to light yesterday during an
adjourned inquest hearing into the death of the 81-year-old pedestrian.

During the hearing at Liverpool Coroner's Court, it emerged that the
footballer was arrested after being summonsed to a Merseyside police
station.

He was subsequently released on police bail pending further inquiries.

The 29-year-old defender was arrested on April 11 following the incident
on January 27 this year.

He had been driving away from the city centre on the east bound
carriageway of West Derby Road when the accident happened.

Henry Stuart Nelson, 81, a retired merchant seaman from the Elm Park
area, was the pedestrian and was crossing the road near Boundary Lane.
He died five weeks after the incident.

Yesterday Liverpool Coroner Andre Rebello described Mr Nelson's death as
"a tragic loss".

He added: "Mr Nelson received very severe head injuries as a result of
the collision and was taken to the Royal University Hospital where he
remained until his death on March 3.

"We must wait to see whether serious criminal charges are brought before
continuing with the inquest. It depends on what is decided at that time."

The inquest had opened into the case in March following a postmortem by
Dr Timothy Hellwell.

Neither Finnan nor any of Mr Nelson's family members attended the
inquest yesterday, but a representative from Mr Finnan's insurance
company was present. The hearing was adjourned until July 4.

A Collision Investigator Report was launched following the accident. The
findings are currently being considered by the Crown Prosecution Service.

The player is due to answer bail at a Merseyside police station on June
29 where it is expected he will find out whether police will proceed
with their inquiry.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said last night: "A 29-year-old man
from Liverpool was arrested on April 11 on suspicion of causing death by
dangerous driving. He was bailed pending further enquiries, to appear at
a police station on Wednesday June 29.

"The CPS are considering the case - in the meantime, the inquest into
the death of the 81-year-old has been adjourned.

"The investigation into the collision is continuing. The driver of the
car has been co-operating fully with the police." Last night's news of
the arrest means Finnan had the possibility of criminal proceedings
hanging over him throughout the European Championships which Liverpool won.

Liverpool Daily Post, 14 June 2005
Robson confirms interest in Kirkland
By David Prior, Daily Post Staff

BRYAN ROBSON has confirmed his interest in taking Chris Kirkland on loan
to West Brom.

The Daily Post last week revealed how Liverpool's England Under-21
international is hoping to reignite his World Cup dream with a move to
the Hawthorns.

And now manager Robson intends to sit down with the 24-year-old to
thrash out a season-long deal.

"We are interested in signing in Chris and I think it would be for a
certain amount of time," Robson said.

"I hope to have him over for training so that we can assess his fitness
and if all is alright there could be a possible loan deal.

"I am hoping to have talks this week and a deal is something we are
definitely looking at."

Kirkland has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield after a season
blighted by injury and poor form.

With Villareal goalkeeper Jose Reina almost certain to arrive this
summer, his first-team chances have dwindled even further. "We are
looking at a few play-ers, but there is no news as yet with a lot of it
speculation at the minute," added Robson..

GERRARD: OF COURSE I WANT TO STAY
By Mark Platt

Steven Gerrard has reiterated his desire to stay at Liverpool and
revealed that he hopes to have his future resolved before the start of
the new season.

Despite winning the Champions League with his hometown club last month
speculation as to where Gerrard will be playing his football next season
has been constant in recent weeks.

But speaking at a Charity Golf event organised by Andy Gray and Gary
McAllister, the Reds skipper has given the clearest indication yet that
he wants to remain a Red.

"There are talks that are going to be happening at the end of June and
beginning of July. The ball is in Liverpool's court now. I'm ready to
talk and waiting for them to give me the nod where and when myself and
my advisers need to be, " he told Sky Sports News.

Then when asked if that meant he would like to stay at Anfield, he
added: "Of course, yes, I've still got two years left. We haven't spoken
about a new contract yet and I don't know how long those talks will go
on for. But the sooner they start the better because I want my future
sorted before the start of the season."

Gerrard also spoke of his excitement about the coming season and the
prospect of changes in the playing personnel at Anfield.

"I'm sure changes will be made," he said. "The manager has said that and
there has been a lot of speculation in the papers, so I am sure new
faces will be added to the squad. Players leaving happens at every club
and I am looking forward to seeing a fresh squad when I link back up."

Following UEFA's decision to allow Liverpool the chance to defend their
Champions League crown Gerrard's season is now due to begin earlier than
expected. But he's welcomed this news and is now setting his sights on
leading the Reds to more silverware.

"UEFA have made the right decision. The competition is called the
Champions League and it's important that the champions are able to
defend their title. It's going to be a long season but I am looking
forward to it. Last season ended on a fantastic note. We won the big one
but that's forgotten about now. We now have to improve in the
Premiership and put more trophies back in the cabinet."

Liverpool Echo, 13 June 2005
All aboard the Champions gravy train
By Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

WHO needs the Caribbean when you can go on a European tour to
destinations like Skonto, Sheriff and . . . Total Network Solutions.

Uefa's decision to grant Liverpool a place in the Champions League, that
should have been theirs by right, has probably caused more holiday
cancellations on Merseyside than an impending hurricane in the Costas.

As the verdict was announced promises made by Liverpool fans to their
families in early May along the lines of "I'll just go to Istanbul and
that's it for me until August" were suddenly made to look as hollow as a
pledge by Mike Storey and David Henshaw to let bygones be bygones.

Holiday brochures were being hidden under cushions and leftover Euros
taken from those places where "we know we'll find them" as priorities
for July shifted from lounging on a beach in Torremolinos with the kids
to finding whether easyJet have any cheap flights to Riga.

As decisions go, this one is as bad as it gets. Not content with
creating a situation in which the Champions right to defend their title
was placed in jeopardy, Uefa managed to make things even worse by
pleasing noone.

Not Liverpool FC who will now miss out on a lucrative pre-season tour to
the Far East. Not the players who will now return to training while the
cricket season is still in its infancy. Not Rafa Benitez who will have
two weeks to create a new team.

Not Everton and the other English competitors who have seen their
potential share of the Euro cash pot reduced by Liverpool's admission.
Not the good people of Anfield who look forward to a match-free summer
every year.

And what about Jamie Carragher's future wife? With a wedding date set
for early July Nicola Hart has seen her honeymoon plans jeopardised at
the stroke of a Uefa administrator's pen.

The European Champions League trophy - known to all those who don't buy
into the kind of corporate re-branding that saw Labour become "New" and
Marathons become Snickers as the European Cup - takes pride of place in
the Anfield trophy room but the competition itself stinks to high heaven.

The EU may be busy debating which countries should and shouldn't be
entitled to subsidies but Uefa have been taking millions of pounds in
subsidies from football supporters ever since the Champions League came
into being over a decade ago.

The gravy train is now rolling at full speed and there appears little
chance of a derailment. Liverpool's inclusion at the first qualifying
stage will provide an almighty boost to the coffers from the sale of TV
rights.

It wouldn't have made sense to exclude Liverpool from the competition
for the same reason as it wouldn't have made sense to put them directly
into the group stages as their status as title holders demanded.

And when I say sense I mean the financial kind and not the kind of
common sense that football fans deserve but rarely get.

Can someone pass me an atlas please? I need to know how to get to Kairat
Almaty!

Liverpool Echo, 13 June 2005
Figo: I want Reds move
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL are considering a move for Real Madrid superstar Luis Figo
after the Portuguese international offered his services to the European
champions.

However, manager Rafa Benitez still needs convincing to swoop for the
32-year-old.

Figo's representatives contacted Anfield officials after the right
midfielder was told he was surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu.

Figo is keen to move to the Premiership, but the reaction thus far
hasn't been as enthusiastic as he'd hoped.

He's also in talks with Marseille. Although Figo wouldn't command a huge
transfer fee, his wages would certainly be a significant factor.

Benitez is also concerned about how hungry the player would be to make a
major impact at Anfield as he enters the twilight years of an
illustrious career.

Liverpool will sign a right-sided midfielder during their brief closed
season and Figo is one of numerous options.

"I have been linked with Liverpool and Manchester United. Almost every
player would like to play for either of those teams and I am no
different," said Figo.

"I have always said that the Premiership is a competition I would like
to play in one day and that's not changed. But I have a family to think
about, too, and it's important that I make the right final decision for
them.

"The Premiership has improved so much over the last few years and many
of the world's best players are signing for clubs in England.

"It's very different to the Spanish League, but I am sure that I will be
able to adapt to it if I ever moved there."

Talks will continue with Dutchman Bolo Zenden, who is also available on
a free transfer.

The deals nearest completion so far are the much publicised swoop for
Villarreal keeper Jose Reina for £6m, and the purchase of Albacete's
20-year-old winger Mark Gonzalez, most likely on an initial year loan
while he recovers from cruciate knee surgery.

Benitez will make another effort to lure Southampton's Peter Crouch this
week. Anfield officials have privately confirmed a £5m bid put to the
Saints was Liverpool's.

The Spanish boss will look elsewhere if Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe
continues to inflate Crouch's value to around £7m.

Meanwhile, Benitez has been honoured by the Spanish region of Extremadura.

Both Benitez and his assistant Pako Ayesteran are to be presented with
the title 'Special Ambassador' for the county where they began their
senior coaching careers.

Liverpool Echo, 13 June 2005
Liverpool must go to Japan
By David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has told Liverpool they must play in the
Club World Championship in December.

Liverpool face an extended fixture list following UEFA's decision to
allow the Anfield club into next season's Champions League first
qualifying round as defending champions.

But any plans to lighten the load by withdrawing from December's Club
World Championship in Japan will not be tolerated, according to Blatter.

The tournament will incorporate the Toyota Cup, a play-off between the
European and South American club champions.

"They must play the Toyota Cup because it is binding for them for 2005,"
Blatter said. "The cup is in Japan. Do you think they won't play? They
will play."

The Echo revealed on Saturday that Liverpool intend to pull out of the
fixture, though the club has made no official comment yet on their plans.

Chief executive Rick Parry said today: "We have not expressed any
opinion on our proposed participation yet. We have not been officially
invited and we cannot assess the implications until that happens."

The Reds, however, will have to rip up their pre-season plans and start
again from scratch following UEFA's decision on Friday.

Boss Rafa Benitez said: "It is commonsense, the UEFA decision. But it
does mess nearly everything up because we have given our players
holidays and now we have to play the qualifying rounds on the 12th or 13th.

Striker Fernando Morientes, cup-tied for Liverpool's successful
Champions League campaign last season, however, is thrilled just to be
able to play in the competition again.

"After being in the stands for the whole of the last European campaign,
I'm overjoyed about being able to play in the Champions League again,"
he said.

"I want to be top scorer in the competition again, as I was with Monaco,
and win the trophy with Liverpool."

Morientes has three winners medals from four finals and went on: "UEFA
have treated the whole thing very sensibly and come up with a very fair
solution. I am happy, but I never thought they would not let us defend
our title.

REINA HOPING TO SEAL ANFIELD DEAL
By Paul Eaton

Villareal goalkeeper Jose Reina has admitted the prospect of playing for
the European champions represents an opportunity which is just too good
to turn down.

Rafael Benitez is reportedly closing in on the services of the Spanish
stopper, with the boss only having until July 6 to register new players
in time for the first qualifying round of the Champions League.

Reina has carved out a reputation as the best young goalkeeper in Spain
over recent seasons and he's ready to battle for his place at Anfield
having watched Jerzy Dudek's heroics in Istanbul.

He said: "To transfer to the champions of Europe, and furthermore to a
team with Liverpool's history, isn't something in everybody's reach.

"My answer was clear and it could only be a positive one."

He added: "I saw Dudek being very focused against Milan in the final,
especially in extra time and in the penalty shoot-out. He was physically
better than Dida at the time.

"They say I'm good when it comes to penalties, but it's only a matter of
intuition and watching a lot of football matches to see how opponents
take them.

"The key is luck and deciding which side to dive."

Benitez has confirmed Reina as one of his top summer targets.

He told the Spanish press: "We are looking at a series of goalkeepers,
and Reina is one of them. But the deal has still not been confirmed.

"There is lots of contact with several players in the Spanish league,
but not as much as the press have said."

He also admitted that UEFA's decision to force Liverpool into the first
qualifying round of the Champions League has "messed up" their
pre-season preparations.

The Reds are currently considering the implications of UEFA's decision,
with the scheduled tour of Japan clashing with the second round
qualifier in the Champions League.

It also means planned pre-season friendlies may need to be scrapped as
the Reds are forced into competitive action from the second week of July
onwards.

"It is common sense, the UEFA decision," Benitez said of his side's
return to the competition.

"But it does mess nearly everything up because we have given our players
holidays and now we have to play the qualifying rounds on the 12th or
13th, so we have to change nearly everything."

VLADI SET FOR FRENCH RETURN
By Paul Eaton

Vladimir Smicer looks set to return to French football by signing a two
year deal with Bordeaux.

Smicer, who played a key role in Liverpool's Champions League final
victory last month, has been told he can leave Anfield this summer after
six years at the club.

Premiership outfits Charlton and Birmingham were reportedly interested
in his services, but according to sources in the Czech Republic the 32
year old midfielder has opted for a move to Bordeaux.

The former Lens player will undergo a medical on Monday before
finalising the terms of his two year deal at the Stade Chaban-Delmas.
