[Liverweb] Youth Cup Tonight

Liverpool's youngsters are aiming to put one foot in the final of
this season's FA Youth Cup tonight when they host Southampton in the
semi-final first leg (kick-off 7.30pm).
The Reds have not reached the final since 1996 and an intriguing
contest is in prospect against last year's beaten finalists.

John Owen's side have made exciting progress to the last four,
defeating Cardiff City, Ipswich Town (the holders), Burnley and
Carlisle United, and they'll be hoping a big crowd will be in
attendance at Anfield to cheer them on tonight.

The Kop stand only will be open and admission prices are as follows;
Adults £4, Children £2.

Liverpool team (from): Roberts, Mimms, Darby, Holmes, Antwi, Hobbs,
Threlfall, Parsonage, Ryan, Flynn, Barnett, Barrett, Hammill,
Anderson, Burns, Wignall, Nardiello, Pringle, Frayne, Lindfield,

Head to Head - Premiership Head to Head
LAST corresponding Fixture : Arsenal 3 Liverpool 1

Squads : Sami Hyypia is expected to be fit in time for this game and
return to league action having missed the midweek European game.
John Arne Riise will be missing through injury.

Freddie Ljungberg will need a fitness test to assess his
availability after he picked up a knock midweek, Henry and Lehmann
are expected to shake off the knocks they received in the same
match.

Liverpool : Reina, Finnan, Carragher, Agger, Hyypia, Kromkamp,
Traore, Warnock, Luis Garcia, Gerrard, Hamann, Xabi Alonso, Kewell,
Fowler, Crouch, Cisse, Morientes, Dudek

Arsenal : Lehmann, Flamini, Senderos, Djourou, Toure, Eboue,
Fabregas, Gilberto, Diaby, Hleb, Henry, Bergkamp, Ljungberg,
Adebayor, Lupoli, Larsson, Reyes, Song, Pires, Walcott, Almunia.

Team Stats : The Reds go for their 80th league win over the Gunners.
This is the final visit ever to Highbury.

The Reds haven't won at Arsenal in the league since 2000 when Titi
Camara scored the only goal of the game.

The Reds won the home fixture on Valentine's night by the only goal
of the game but have an awful record in London. It's now over a year
since the Reds won in the capital. That last win was a 2-1 win over
Charlton.

Looking at the Reds' overall record against Arsenal in the
premiership you see that the Reds have won 5 of the 13 games away
from home, losing just four. However the last two games have been
losses.

On two occassions the Reds have lost having taken the lead against
Arsenal in the Premiership. They have only once won having fallen
behind.

If the Reds were to win this one it would mean that they have the
best head to head record with Arsenal compared to all other teams
they have faced in the Premiership in terms of points attained. The
Reds have so far accumulated 46 points against Arsenal and only the
47 points with Aston Villa exceeds this.

Player Stats : Robbie Fowler has a liking for Arsenal - he's scored
nine goals for the Reds in the league against Arsenal. On the other
side though Thierry Henry has scored six times for Arsenal against
the Reds in the league including one hat-trick.

Jan Kromkamp will hope to play his tenth Liverpool game in this one.
Competition at right back comes from Steve Finnan who hopes to play
his 125th game for the Reds.

Xabi Alonso will hope to play in his 75th Liverpool game. Alonso has
come on as a sub nine times in the Premiership so far for the Reds.
Steven Gerrard has gone in the opposition an amazing 49 times for
the Reds. Only Danny Murphy and Vladimir Smicer went off more times
in a Liverpool league shirt.

Jose Reyes will hope to make his 50th start in the league for
Arsenal. Gilberto Silva will look to start his 100th Arsenal league
game.

Referee : Steve Bennett - taken charge of 24 games this season and
shown 5 Red cards in the process and 96 yellows.

For the two sides he has taken charge of the Reds on three
occassion - two wins and a draw. For Arsenal he has also officiated
three times and again - two wins and a draw.

Betting : Liverpool 2/1, Arsenal 6/5, Draw : 2/1

Liverweb Prediction : Arsenal 1 Liverpool 1

The Reds' euro dream is over for this season after a 2-0 home defeat
to Benfica. This is a game the Reds really should have won for all
their chances but yet again they failed to take them and were hit by
sucker punches. This had all the potential to be a great European
night - the fans were in great voice on the night and in the ground
early. Two flags were passed around the Kop as the singing started
to get louder. That singing continued even in defeat as the fans
backed the players all the way despite the missed chances.

Benfica got the game underway attacking the Kop end and had taken a
sizeable set of fans with them as well. Pre match one of the Benfica
fans threw a flare on to the pitch and was greeted by large scale
booing from the Anfield crowd. Sadly the events on the pitch were
ultimately lit by Benfica also. Inside the first minute Laurent
Robert was booked for a poor tackle on Warnock. Warnock was one of
five changes in the Reds line up, which also saw Traore deputise for
Hyypia who was still carrying a knock.

The Reds started fast as you would expect them to as they went in
search of their two goals without reply to take them through. They
looked like they could really get at Benfica as well. On four
minutes Morientes had a shot straight at the keeper. Six minutes
later and Crouch went closer still as his shot was deflected on to
the post. A minute later and somehow Carragher missed from about two
yards out. The ball came down for Carragher but he somehow put the
ball the wrong side of the post when under pressure. The chances
were certainly coming.

On fifteen minutes Finnan went in to the area but his shot on goal
was well blocked by a desperate Benfica lunge. The danger though at
the other end was evident as Benfica looked to use pace on the
counter attack. Players like Nuno Gomes and Simao looked a threat
all the time as they tried to get that away goal. They underlined
that threat when they won a corner on seventeen minutes but the Reds
were able to deal with it. The Reds broke from that corner but
Garcia saw his eventual shot blocked. A minute later and Garcia had
a glorious chance but his shot flew over the bar. Either the
defender just flicked this ball up or it took a bobble as he hit the
shot as it sat up just as he was about to strike the ball.

On twenty five minutes came an absolute pearler of a chance for the
Reds. This is possibly the one chance that you prayed to come.
Steven Gerrard opened up the Benfica defence to give Crouch a one on
one with the keeper. With one side of the goal looking wide open
Crouch kicked the ball straight at the keeper and the chance was
gone. It these types of chance that turn you from a good side to one
that will march on to later rounds.

Just before the half hour the Reds were so nearly behind when
Geovanni volleyed over Reina only to see his shot come back off the
cross bar and then he grabbed the follow up header from Simao. Two
minutes later and Peter Crouch picked up a yellow card for a dive in
the area. It was a rather pitiful attempt to get a penalty really
and the linesman flagged the offence to the referee who duly booked
Crouch.

Benfica got the opening goal on thirty six minutes. It was a class
goal but the build up to it was comical from the Reds. The move came
down their right and as the ball was played Traore fell over which
allowed the first part of the move to continue. Carragher got in but
allowed himself to be tackled on the ball. Benfica then moved the
ball across to Simao who cut inside before shooting high past Reina
in to the top corner. Now the Reds needed three to go through. It
was still possible though to get back in to it and the Reds tried to
get one back before half time.

The Reds did get a glorious chance just before half time to equalise
on the night but Carragher hit the post with his header from a
corner. This was going to be a big team talk in the second half. The
Reds were out and ready for action. The crowd turned up the volume
as You'll Never Walk Alone was aired from the whole ground to
inspire the players. George played Ring of fire over the tannoy
which got the crowd going even more. Sadly though the second half
just didn't quite happen.

The Reds huffed and puffed their way their way forward but just
didn't create clear openings. Yes they had the odd pop shot from
distance but we just didn't work the keeper enough. The Reds tried
to push forward in numbers which inevitably left gaps at the back.
Just after the hour Nuno Gomes went clean through but was rightly
flagged offside. Gomes did continue his run after the whistle and
was promptly booked. The Reds made their first change on sixty three
minutes when Cisse replaced Kewell. Garcia moved to the left and
Cisse went down the right. Fowler replaced Morientes six minutes
later and then Hamann replaced Warnock who seemed to have pulled a
hamstring.

It was starting to get desperate now for the Reds as they poured
forward in waves without creating much. Benfica were looking to pick
the Reds off at will on the counter attack. Carragher headed over
the bar on seventy six minutes but the longer time went on the more
desperate we became and the less chances we created. We did get the
ball in to the back of the net just before the end and once again it
was Fowler. Yet again it was disallowed though as the ball from the
corner went out before coming back in. In fairness the linesman
flagged straight away and the chance didn't count.

Benfica doubled their goal tally on the night with a minute left on
the clock in a fast breakaway which finally saw Miccoli scoring from
six yards out. It was a gutting blow and 2-0 certainly didn't
reflect the Reds' possession of the game. Ultimately though its
about putting the ball in the back of the net and we simply don't
look like doing it.

Going out of the European cup is depressing it has to be said but
even in the final minutes of the game we still managed to sing
You'll Never Walk Alone and chant Rafa's name. This if nothing else
gives the players a lift with more games to come. This just has to
be put to bed and we have to get on with football for the rest of
the season. Keep the heads up now and move on.

MotM : Steve Finnan - a really difficult game for anyone to shine as
it turned out but Finnan supported the team well and was one of the
few who rarely lost the ball dithering in defence.

[Liverweb] Weekly Viewpoint

MY VIEWPOINT 9 March 2006

Read me on the teletext fanzine pages at 511 on Wednesdays.

And so the European adventure is over for another year. The first
leg defeat had always made this match very tricky and that's how it
turned out. It didn't have to be this way though as the Reds
created chances and some were golden ones. As long as we have shot
shy strikers you leave yourself open to a sucker punch. That is
exactly what happened as well and once we let them score the hill
just got bigger to climb.

It's easy to moan about this or that not happening but we as fans
did what we always do. We got behind the team, even in defeat and
that's what makes us as fans so great. The road forward is a long
haul one and we all knew we still needed players to come in and help
us move forward. Perhaps there is a need for one or two more still
yet before we really take the next step.

Looking at the bench last night it was great to see two young lads
there as well for experience of nothing else. One of those in Paul
Anderson is a great talent and he will be ready with the other Reds
on Friday in the Youth Cup. Good luck to the young lads in trying
to emulate the last win ten years ago.

Good Luck Red Men!

RTP1, Sport TV, Supersport 6, Supersport 8SA, NTV+ On-line, RTE Two,

Reds versus Portugese Teams - Portugese Ltrack Files
The Reds come in to this crucial second leg on the back of a
frustrating 0-0 draw with Charlton at the weekend.

Benfica won 2-1 away at Estrela Amadora at the weekend and lie third
in their domestic league

Squads : Jan Kromkamp and Dan Agger are ineligible after playing for
their respective sides earlier in the competition. Sami Hyypia is a
slight doubt after picking up a hamstring injury against Charlton
although is expected to play.

Team Stats : This is the fourth time the Reds have been drawn
against Benfica in this competition. The Reds have always beaten
Benfica and made the final before now. On two of those three
occassions they also lifted the trophy.

The Reds have won the top European trophy 5 times and of course
after last May's triumph the trophy remains at Anfield. Our
opponents won the trophy twice back at the starts of the 1960's.

The last major first leg turnaround for the Reds was Auxerre in 1991
when they turned round a 2-0 first leg deficit. More recently and
Olympiakos the Reds were in this same state as now though. Win by
two clear goals to go through. Last season they did that and went on
to lift the trophy.

Of eleven home games played on a Wednesday so far the Reds have won
six, drawn four and lost just the once.

The Reds have a good home record against sides from Portugal. Only
Boavista in 2001 have got anything from a game at Anfield.

From six previous game at Anfield against Portugese sides the Reds
have scored 14 goals and conceded just five. In the three games
against Benfica in the past they have won all three, scoring 8 goals
and conceding just two in the process.

Player Stats : If Sami Hyypia starts this match it wil be his 50th
start for the Reds. It would also be his 50th appearance if he plays
any part of the game.

Should Djimi Traore start this one it will be his 20th Champions
League start.

Fernando Morientes is looking to play his 10th CL game for the Reds.
In all competitions for the Reds Morientes has nine goals so far.

Xabi Alonso, Luis Garcia, Jose Reina and Dietmar Hamann are all one
booking away from a suspension.

Any appearance for Steven Gerrard will draw him level with Chris
Lawler in ninth place of the all time European appearances list with
66 games. If Gerrard scored once he would go joint third on the all
time european scoring charts with Roger Hunt.

Harry Kewell has arrived as a sub nine times in Europe for the Reds.
Each one has come in the Champions League.

Djibril Cisse needs one goal for ten in Europe for the Reds.

Referee : Massimo De Santis (ITA) - took charge of the Reds' home
stalemate with Chelsea earlier this season. This season the Italian
referee from Rome has taken charge of 2 other group stage matches.
One was another no score draw and the other was a 3-0 home win for
Lyon.

Betting : Liverpool 2/5, Benfica 6/1, Draw : 11/4

To go through this tie : Liverpool 8/11, Benfica Evens

Tournament Odds : Liverpool 14/1, Benfica 33/1

Liverweb Prediction : Liverpool 3 Benfica 0

[Liverweb] Charlton Match Report

Liverweb Match Report

Liverpool 0 Charlton Athletic 0

Liverpool : Reina, Kromkamp, Carragher, Hyypia, Traore, Hamann, Gerrard(C),
Kewell, Cisse, Crouch, Fowler

Subs Used : Riise for Hyypia(45), Alonso for Hamann (73), Morientes for
Crouch(81)

Subs Unused : Dudek, Finnan

Att : 43,892

Ref : M.Atkinson

The Reds dropped two points at home to Charlton in this late afternoon kick
off. A no score draw came in a relatively poor game, although the Reds had
plenty of chances to win it. Once again they just lacked that little
something to bag the win. That said Fowler did have a good goal chalked of
for offside in the final minute.

The Reds made some changes to the side and t was obviously with Wednesday
in mind. Traore started at left back to widespread oh go god lets hope they
don't notice he's playing. Djibril Cisse got a rare start down the right
hand side with Fowler and Crouch up front.

The Reds won the toss and defended the Kop end in the first half as
Charlton kicked off. Within minutes of the start the Kop started to sing
the old Gary Mac song. It was a touching moment to remember the midfielder
who lost his wife to cancer late in the week. Gary Mac our thoughts are
with you!

The Reds were out of the traps fast in this one and were unlucky not to be
ahead from an early point of the game. What they did find though was a
keeper in fine form. Thomas Mhyre - in the first half in particular pulled
off some great saves. Kewell went close twice in the first ten minutes and
Cisse also headed wide.

On thirteen minutes it looked like Fowler was about to break his returning
duck when he hit a superb shot, only to see it go just wide. This was a
good start though and had Charlton on the back foot. Their main outlet
seemed to be to get the ball up to either Bent fast and then try and get up
to support them. It never proved to be a big threat but it was always there.

On fifteen minutes came a superb reaction save from Mhyre. A cross came in
and Hreidarsson sliced the ball to the top corner only for the keeper to
claw it away for a corner. There's been a few of those this season that
haven't quite gone our way.

The Reds were looking for anything to get through what was proving to be
two well organised banks of four. The Charlton men worked really hard and
made life as hard as possible. Cisse wasn't getting any joy down the right
as his movement was all too easy for Spector to read. On the other side
Kewell did get the better of his man but the crosses didn't always match
his work getting free.

Steven Gerrard got a couple of decent crosses in from the right. On thirty
four minutes one of his crosses found Kewell but his shot was well saved by
Mhyre. On thirty seven minutes there were big shouts all round for a
penalty as Gerrard headed on in the area and it clearly looked like hand
ball but referee Atkinson blew the appeals away.

The final great chance for the Reds in the half came just before half time
when Cisse headed on goal at the back post but it proved to be just at the
right height for the keeper to save. It was frustrating but the one hope
was that something will give if we keep going at them in the second half.

John Arne Riise came on at the start of the second half and it was Hyypia
who was absent. Word quickly arrived that this was a hamstring injury.
Minds quickly went to Wednesday as well because Traore would have to play
then too with Agger cup tied.

The Reds started the match again and Cisse was soon on the attack but his
cross sailed harmlessly on to the roof of the net. Eight minutes in to the
half and a Reds' corner found Riise and his poor shot was deflected just
wide by Traore.

Just short of the hour mark the Reds had a good opportunity. Kromkamp
pressed down the right and his cross to Kewell was good but the Aussie star
fluffed his shot well wide when he should have done better. Just a minute
later and Cisse put in a great cross but Crouch mad a hash of the header
and put it straight to Mhyre. Crouch just didn't generate any power in the
header.

Cisse was the only Red booked on the day and rightly so. He was caught
offside and the frustrated French man slammed the ball on the ground. The
ref didn't really have much choice but to book him really. Cisse shot wide
from a free kick on seventy one minutes as things started getting
frustrating. This shot was particularly frustrating as the free kick was
direct and then we failed to work the goalie.

Alonso came on for Hamann after 73 minutes in a bid to make the midfield a
bit more forward thinking. With nine minutes to go Morientes came on for
Crouch. Now don't ask why but the crossing improved now. So the player have
eighty odd minutes with a player much taller than most others on the pitch
and we can't cross. He goes off and we throw some great balls in to the box.

Riise blazed a shot well off target with six to go and then Alonso shot
just wide three minutes later. You just couldn't see that goal coming.
There was just three extra minutes added to the clock. Bang on the ninety
minute mark Fowler scored. The Reds played a free kick right across to
Alonso and his shot was sailing well wide. However it went straight to
Fowler who controlled it and shot home. Sadly I was on of the few who
quickly saw the flag up and the goal was chalked off. I've seen it on TV
after the game and I have to say this decision was wrong as Fowler was
definitely onside but that's the way it goes sometimes. We should have been
ahead long before this.

The final whistle went on what was a frustrating afternoon in the end. It
started with a heavy downpour of snow as kick off approached. The ref was
forced to start with the all yellow ball. Then the Reds played well for the
first half and saw their keeper make some great saves. The second half saw
a return to the white ball and the Reds got more and more frustrated. It
definitely case of two points dropped though this and second place isn't
looking on really if we're honest.

MotM : Jan Kromkamp - played well at full back and tried to get in to the
attack when he could. This was certainly his best game for the Reds so far.
