Benitez has seen shipped under his managerial reign.

Player Stats : Djibril Cisse will hope to play in his 50th game for the
Reds. All eyes will be waiting to see if he is recalled to the squad having
been rested in midweek. If he is subbed in the game it will take him to

career for the Reds in the league.

Stephane Henchoz will be playing against his former side in this one. Wigan

Liverpool Football Club have today spelt out their commitment to a
long term relationship with grass roots football in the United
States.

At a press conference staged at the highly impressive Mike Rose
soccer complex in Memphis, Tennessee, Liverpool representative Bill
Bygroves insisted the Reds weren't entering into the project with an
eye on scouting talent for the future and emphasised the club's
desire to lend their coaching expertise to help the development of
the sport in America.

"We're looking at this project with the view that we want to take it
one step at a time," said Bygroves to a number of local dignitaries,
project sponsors, footballers and coaches from the Memphis area on
Thursday afternoon.

"It's important first of all to lay the foundations. We have plenty
of ideas for this to be successful. We need vision, passion, action
and motion. We've already got the vision and the passion, now we
need the action. We want to turn this dream into a reality.

"We are committed to making a success of this project. This is not
about developing a football academy and it's not about dealing at
the elite level. It's not about Liverpool FC selling its brand,
looking to recruit players or exploiting the tremendous hospitality
of our American hosts. It's about the determination we have to make
an impact on grass roots soccer in the United States."

Liverpool will continue to work with their new American friends over
the coming weeks, months and years to help establish football as a
game all youngsters in the States want to play. Everyone involved
knows a long road lies ahead, but Bygroves is confident that the
Reds' experience in local community work will eventually reap
rewards.

He said: "We're a football club, we're not a PLC, and we know about
football. We understand what it takes to develop young players and
turn them into national and international names. We have a way of
doing things at Liverpool and we believe it's the right way.

"We also have a lot of experience of working in the community with
kids. We understand communities and we empathise with their needs.
At Liverpool we have a lot of initiatives such as 'Show Racism the
Red Card', 'Kick Drugs Into Touch' and 'Give Bullying the Boot'. We
run a number of Truth for Youth projects such as SweeperZone and a
number of Special Needs programmes because we want to help give the
kids a positive future.

"We're not looking for quick fixes. We have a passion for doing the
right things well and we are looking forward to working with the
people in America during this project."

It is hoped that as a result of this link-up coaches from
Liverpool's Academy will visit Memphis to offer their expertise to
their American counterparts while coaches from the Reds' community
team will also visit to get involved in grass roots football. There
is also the possibility of a Liverpool youth team as well as the
Liverpool Ladies side visiting at some point in the future to take
part in a competition at the magnificent Mike Rose complex.

Liverpool MP Peter Kilfoyle was also present at the press conference
and he added his backing to the project on behalf of his home city.

He said: "We've got 20 kids from the Anfield and Breckfield areas
coming out here for a holiday of a lifetime over the next week.
These kids understand about football and they understand about
deprivation. Football can be a great way of helping people forget
their troubles.

"For the kids involved in these community schemes it's not about
playing football to become a superstar, it's about using football as
a means of opening their eyes to their own potential. This is a
tremendous project and I wish everyone involved in it the very best
of luck."

The scheme is backed by the Salvation Army - and supported by
sponsors Brook Street - who are geared towards building a number of
sports centres across America, all complete with Liverpool FC
branded football fields.

The 20 kids selected to enjoy a holiday of a lifetime as a spin-off
from this link-up touched down in Memphis International airport on
Thursday evening ready to begin their week of fun-filled activities,
which kicks off with a VIP tour of Graceland on Friday afternoon
before taking in the NBA clash between the Memphis Grizzlies and
Orlando Magic at the FedEx Forum in the evening.

This weeks teletext article in unedited format

Crisis? what crisis - all of a sudden the goals of course are
starting to go in and we're winning games. We've sneaked up the
league quickly and suddenly the talks of crisis have gone. We've
been playing a more settled side of late which is one of the things
that we wanted to see and the results have followed.

Five league wins and no goals conceded is great form yet no-one
seems to be noticing. For me that's great as we can just stick to
playing our own stuff. The important thing of course is to keep
getting these points on the board before we go to Japan in a couple
of weeks.

Minds of many fans are now of course moving to the transfer window
to see how we can improve and of course seeing if anyone leaves.
Obvious thoughts are that you pick great players out but Rafa has
shown before he puts team first in signing players and expects
desire to wear the shirt so don't be surprised to see an unexpected
signing in January.

-----------

The Reds moved up to 4th with a convincing if not easy 2-0 win up at
Sunderland. The Reds had gone looking for a fifth successive league
win at bottom of the table Sunderland. They arrived at a ground
filled to less than three quarters, took all three points and by the
end of the match the ground was full only of Reds fans really.

The Reds were forced to wear their 3rd kit - complete yellow from
head to toe. The home side got the game underway and were the better
side early on. The Reds defence looked a little shaky in the first
few minutes. It certainly didn't look or feel like the Reds' crack
defence of late - rather a defence with cracks ready to appear. That
soon adjusted itself back to normal though.

Sunderland did have a great chance to score on nineteen minutes
although we'll let Mr Brown tell you how he managed to mis-hit his
shot completely. That was a huge let off for the Reds it has to be
said and they did seem to react from that point. From this point on
the Reds seemed to step up a gear and one surging run from Steven
Gerrard really set out stall out.

The Reds grabbed a lead on the half hour mark thanks to Luis Garcia.
Garcia made a run through the centre from the left side. Alonso knew
where his run was and hit a superb ball to him. This was perfect
weight and direction for the run and not the widely reported long
punt. Garcia got the ball on the edge of the area and slid it under
the on rushing keeper.

Sunderland seemed to just know that that was it from here and even
though a 1-0 lead isn't huge it was always going to be enough. It
got better though on the stroke of half time. Gerrard and Alonso
linked on the right side and as Gerrard started his run Alonso
played a slide rule ball through to Gerrard. Stevie G took one touch
to get round the keeper and then slotted home. This was game over as
long as we stuck to controlling the game now.

After half time the Reds got the game started again and continued to
control the main part of the match. Sunderland were trying but they
simply didn't have enough quality. Based on this they will go down
as they just don't have the quality to do otherwise.

Just two minutes into the half the Reds really should have been
awarded a penalty. Crouch had a shot half saved by the keeper but as
Crouch went for the rebound he was felled by his man. He would have
scored from two yards but somehow Phil Dowd decided that because
Crouch was half falling to get to the ball that his leg being taken
away from him wasn't a foul.

Harry Kewell came on for Morientes on the hour mark in a small
change to the tactics. However the Reds were soon to be down to ten
men as Momo Sissoko was sent off on sixty five minutes. He was first
booked on fifty one minutes for a poor challenge. He was then warned
by ref Phil Dowd after another poor challenge but the bench didn't
switch him. Then on sixty five minutes he gave the ref no choice but
to send him off. Another bookable challenge gave him his second card
of the game and he was off.

The Reds were able to adjust quite easily to the sending off and it
meant Crouch was left on his own up front. however with Sunderland
lacking any quality of note the Reds were still able to control the
game. The home side certainly tried to mix it up a bit but very
nearly fell further behind on seventy four minutes when Riise raced
the whole length of the field but his shot hit the bar and went out
for a corner having flicked off the defender on the way to goal.

As time ticked on Traore came on for Crouch in a move that moved
Riise up field a little. The home fans slowly started to trickle out
and all the noise left came from the Reds fans. At the rate the home
fans going the ground would be empty with the game still going on. A
few hardy fans did manage to stick it out to the end. With the rest
of the fans long gone they would probably have got a free road to go
home on anyway.

Stephen Warnock came on for the final minutes of stoppage time for
the Reds but had very little time to actually do anything. The
referee blew the whistle though and fifth straight league win was
ours and to go with it a fifth straight clean sheet in the league.
Three more of them and it equals our best ever league run of clean
sheets set way back in the early 1920's.

MotM - Steven Gerrard - just a few sparks from Gerrard turned the
Reds from 2nd gear to third and fourth for a crucial time and it won
the game. Alonso also played really well and his sublime passing at
times was a joy to behold.

Head to Head - Premiership Head to Head
The Reds travel to Sunderland earlier than planned due to their
involvement in the World Club Championship in December. The Reds
beat Sunderland 1-0 in the reverse fixture at Anfield thanks to a
goal from Xabi Alonso. Sunderland finished that game with ten men
although that Red card was rightly rescinded upon a further check by
the ref.

Squads : Anthony Le Tallec is ineligible to play in the game due to
being on loan at the Black Cats. Bolo Zenden is definitely out for
the Reds whilst Xabi Alonso is still a doubt following hi injury
sustained at the end of the Portsmouth match.

Team Stats : The Reds have won three, drawn one and lost one of
their Premiership encounters so far between the sides.

The last time the sides met was back in the 2002-03 season when
Sunderland recorded their only Premiership win over the Reds. That
day Sunderland won 2-1 and they haven't won a home Premiership game
since.

That win for the Mackems came late in the game and ensured the Reds
lost their fourth consecutive league game. In contrast the Reds come
in to this game on the back of four league wins on the bounce.

A Sunderland win would be their 50th over the Reds in the league. A
Reds win would be their 60th in the league overall and their 25th at
Sunderland.

On three occassions the Reds have won 4-1 away from home. That is
the highest win they have had away from home. At the other end the
biggest win Sunderland ever recorded 7-0.

Player Stats : Djibril Cisse will be appearing in his 50th game for
the Reds if he makes it on to the pitch in this one.

Luis Garcia is one league goal away from double figures for the
Reds. A hat-trick for the little Spaniard would take him to 20 Reds
goals in all competitions.

Momo Sissoko will appear in Red for the twentieth time in this match
if he gets on at any time.

John Arne Riise has been subbed 19 times in the premiership for the
Reds so far in his career at Anfield. Cisse has been subbed nine
times.

Stephen Warnock has been an unused premiership sub nine times so far
for the Reds.

Referee : Phil Dowd - averages four cards a game so far this season.
In eight games thus far he has booked 31 players, awarded two
penalties and sent one player off. He is yet to take charge of a
Reds game this season or one involving Sunderland.

Betting : Liverpool 4/9, Sunderland 11/2, Draw : 13/5

Liverweb Prediction : Sunderland 0 Liverpool 3

[Liverweb] Reserves Win - report

well once again roving reporter Adam braved the cold Wrexham night
to watch the reserves take on Sunderland. Despite his frozen fruit
pastilles he managed to write up another excellent match report.

The attendance was extremely small at The Racecourse in North Wales
tonight but, unlike the weather, it wasn't into minus figures. The
few hardy souls who did make their way to the ground were not repaid
with much of a game. An extremely poor Sunderland side were the
visitors and despite the fact that they were reduced to ten men with
less than a third of the game gone Liverpool still made hard work of
it.

Liverpool set up with a 4-3-1-2 formation early on. One obvious
change to starting line up was Alvin Martin's son David appearing in
goal: he's on a week's trial from MK Dons and was looking to
impress.

Recent signing Paul Anderson was also staring his second game. It
was the first time I had seen him and he helped get The Reds off to
a bright start. Anderson combined well with Calliste on 3 minutes -
I thought Calliste should have shot earlier, but in taking a touch
he was fouled and Liverpool had a free kick from twenty yards out.
Mannix took it and hit the target, but also hit the keeper.

Manno was again in the action a few minutes later. Potter and
Barragan had combined to win a corner, this cleared the players in
the box and fell to Manno who cut inside past two players and let
fly. Unfortunately the shot was too tame and straight at the keeper.

The next chance would also fall to Liverpool, this time it was in
the shape of Anderson. A loose ball fell to him on the edge of the
box, he hit a cracking volley that looked for all the world a goal
but somehow slid past the upright. The keeper hadn't moved.

The impressive and assured Roque was again excelling at the back for
Liverpool. As he came out with the ball he played it forward for
Calliste only to be taken out by a very late challenge from Richard
Smith. As it was early in the game I expected just a yellow, but the
referee judged the foul on its merits and Smith was ordered off.

As The Reds attacked a few minutes later Peltier failed to read a
Potter flick. As he went to win the ball back he looked as though he
felt sorry for ten man Sunderland and dived in studs showing. It
didn't really merit a red, but he was rightly cautioned. It seems to
be one reckless tackle every game from him though. It's something he
needs to sort out.

There wasn't a great deal of action for the rest of the half. As the
grit vans drove past the ground at half time I ate my frozen fruit
pastels and knocked my knees together trying to keep warm and hoping
for a better second half.

Half Time: 0-0

Just minutes into the second half and Liverpool came close to taking
the lead. Potter did well down the right and Manno diving to reach
his cross only managed to lift his volley over the bar.

On 56 minutes Peltier left the pitch to be replaced by Adam Hammill.
He slotted in on the left wing, but it was an advancing Raven that
won the free kick that led to the goal. After he was upended Potter
whipped the free kick in dangerously and the impressive Anderson
arrived at the far post to steer his volley superbly into the top
corner.

This gave Liverpool confidence and through Hammill, Potter and the
waspish Anderson they started to ask questions. On 64 minutes the
lead should have been doubled. After a corner the ball fell to
Godwin just a few yards out. He swung and looked certain to score
but somehow missed the ball.

Three minutes later Mannix did brilliantly down the right. He beat
his man and whipped in an excellent cross that Hammill just failed
to get on top of. As Sunderland cleared Anderson spotted the
telegraphed pass. He was first to it and ran on goal, albeit from a
wide angle. He looked up and saw Calliste. His cross to Calliste was
blocked by a retreating defender but fell straight back into his
path. He hit the ball first time and beat the keeper. Just as the
ball crossed the line Calliste helped it in ... unfortunately
Calliste had been in an offside position. Raven did his captain's
duty, passed the dunces hat to Calliste and sent him to the corner
flag.

That's not true, but Calliste was removed from the action on 76
minutes as James Frayne entered the action. Frayney had only been on
moment when he showed that he is like a rather slippery substance
off a shovel when he gets going, a good Sundeland block
unfortunately stopping the ball from reaching him.

Sunderland hadn't given up all hope and with just under ten minutes
left, Robbie Weir dispossessed Liverpool's Ghanaian defender. He
looked up and saw Martin off his line. He went for the chip which
was definitely on, but was unable to hit the target as the ball
drifted wide.

As the game neared a close the fourth official signalled two minutes
to be added, but after twenty seconds or so the ref decided he'd had
enough of the cold and sent us on our way. It wasn't spectacular,
but I'd settle for another 1-0 win against Sunderland tomorrow.

Full Time: Liverpool 1 Sunderland 0

Man of the Match: Anderson He has something of a Jack Russell about
him. If I had to name a player he is like I'd actually say Dennis
Wise. He's not the biggest, but he is quick, brave and industrious.
Roque was once again extremely convincing at centre half and Potter
had the best game I'd seen him play for a while.

Sunderland are 9th in the table coming into the game two points

Away from home Sunderland have won just once from four games this
year although have only lost once as well. The loss was in their
last away game at Bolton where they lost 3-2.

My man to watch for Sunderland tonight is Jake Richardson who has
one goal from three appearances this season but has had decent write
ups.

Match Report tomorrow.

The two clubs of course meet tomorrow night in first team action.
The Reds will be without the injured Zenden for sure - out for a
month.

The Reds continued their winning form in the Premiership at City on
Saturday afternoon. For the first time in over two years they have
managed to string together four league wins on the bounce. The Reds
were the better side overall in a poor match and deserved the narrow
one goal win.

City got the game underway and were the better side early on in the
game. Joey Barton, back for City looked to dominate the centre of
the pitch as the Reds seemed to struggle early doors. What the Reds
did have though once again was a bit of extra class at the back so
whatever City threw at the Reds they coped with well. Hyypia was in
no mood to stop the run of clean sheets.

City did have a glorious chance on thirteen minutes to open the
scoring and Vassell really should have done. He headed just wide
from a Musampa cross. A big let off for the Reds there though. It
jolted the Reds a bit into trying to control the play more. They
slowly started to get hold of the game and for the first half at
least it made for a bit of a stalemate. Neither side were creating
clear cut chances and certainly not hitting the target when anything
came along.

Djibril Cisse had the best chance of the half for the Reds but he
dithered too much getting the ball on to his preferred foot and shot
tamely at James who gathered easily. And that pretty much sums up
the first half other than Cisse picked up a booking for dissent
after he fouled Ireland. The ref had got a fair few decisions wrong
on the day to which he always seemed determined to balance one bad
mistake up with an equally bad one to the other side. How some
throws were given one way or the other is beyond me. Clear
deflections off a player seemed to go un-noticed.

The Reds came out for the second half and were looking to a change
straight away. The half started though with Kewell half stripped and
ready for action. Within five minutes of the half starting Kewell
indeed came on for Djibril Cisse who walked off with a bewildered
look on his face. He obviously couldn't understand why he was going
off. In truth Kewell played well though when he was on for what he
saw of the ball. He's starting to look like he wants to really get
involved a bit more these days and perhaps had he worn some decent
studs he wouldn't have landed on his backside quite so often either.

The Reds grabbed the only goal of the game on sixty minutes and it
was a well worked move that created it. The ball was on the far
right for the Reds but a cross field low pass to Riise started the
ball moving. Riise played it off to Gerrard and then continued his
run. Mills was now lost from marking Riise who rammed the return
ball home past David James. Now the Reds could really control the
game and continue the winning streak.

The game became very stop start if anything with subs being made all
over the place and little decent action in between. Garcia came on
for Riise on seventy six and Morientes followed for Crouch four
minutes later. The Reds though were now in control of the game but
of course at 1-0 you never fully relax.

In the closing minutes Pepe Reina did as much to heighten the nerves
as well when he let a long ball bounce before kicking it out for a
corner. However, even with David james having come forward the Reds
couldn't be broken and as the final whistle went the Reds cheered
another victory. This is their first at City's new ground and on the
day well deserved.

MotM : Sami Hyypia - commanding as he can be at the back there was
nothing getting past the big Finn on the day.
