The Guardian, 19 Mar 2005
Just a game but it made Benítez into a strategist
Liverpool's progress this season is down to playing with toy soldiers
By Dominic Fifield

Rafael Benítez sought perfection through reflection this week.
Infuriated by Liverpool's inconsistencies, his side's form lurching from
the supreme to the downright dire, the Spaniard's thoughts returned to
the evening when, as a 12-year-old in Madrid, he had been beaten at his
favourite board game by a friend.

Stratego, he explained to his baffled audience, pits the players as
military commanders deploying their Napoleonic-era units on the
battlefield with a view to engaging and capturing the opponent's flag.
The blurb on the box says it is a "unique game of strategy, memorisation
and unit management". Benítez has effectively used it as a model for life.

"I stayed up all night thinking about why I'd lost and how I could
prevent it happening again," said the Liverpool manager, manoeuvring the
journalists' tape recorders around the table to illustrate how he'd pair
his field marshal with a foot soldier and where he would sink his mines.
"Once I'd learned the rules and understood the strategies, I didn't lose
again. I worked out a way to win no matter who I played."

As a quirk this smacked of Gareth Keenan's geeky top-trump fixation in
The Office, but as an insight into Benítez's mind-set it was revealing.
Football has long since taught the 44-year-old that chance can undermine
even the most carefully laid plans, but the meticulous and scientific
approach remains, along with the obsessive desire to succeed.

When the 201st meeting between Liverpool and Everton ignites tomorrow,
Benítez's task is to send out a side to emerge victorious from a fixture
they simply must win. Merseyside is gripped with thoughts of the
Champions League. For Everton, a chance to finish above their city
rivals for the first time since they last won the championship, in 1987,
has the added incentive of qualification for the elite competition.
Liverpool's thoughts will be not only on Juventus but also on the
desperate need to claw back a seven-point deficit to offer a prospective
route back into the premier tournament.

Benítez's first season has had the occasional blistering performance -
Arsenal, Olympiakos and Bayer Leverkusen - but has been undermined by
his side's inability to find consistency. Last week's searing display in
Germany was followed by goalless tedium against Blackburn, with only one
shot on goal. The contrast transformed Benítez the workaholic into
Benítez the worrier.

"I go home and mutter into my pillow all night wondering how I can
change things," he said. "We've lost games and I've found it
unbelievable. I've left thinking, 'We're better than them. How did we
lose?' I have been trying to understand why, working 14 hours every day
with my staff.

"We have more quality than Everton, but it's not always about quality in
football. Everton work hard for each other as a team - they do what we
did at Valencia - whereas we haven't had the right mentality in some
games. We've lost concentration at times. We need to work on being
stronger mentally.

"At Valencia we'd change our game plan to combat a particular opponent.
That's something we still need to learn how to do here. We're still far
away from achieving what I want us to be but, in football, you can
change things by working harder."

Results may not always suggest as much but Benítez has already made an
impact behind the scenes. His players admit they have never had as much
tactical preparation, as many hands-on routines, sit-down sessions and
flip-chart lectures.

Yet it is the manager's insistence on creating a united squad with depth
in talent, just as at Valencia, which shines through. Players have
changed room-mates on away trips to help bond the multi-national set-up.
Social events have been encouraged. The squad hit the town last Friday
with a free weekend ahead, the signings of Mauricio Pellegrino and Scott
Carson prompting an evening out to welcome them. In Spain, Benítez would
hold regular team barbecues, with his Argentinian players doing the
cooking; as the weather warms up, Pellegrino will presumably be kept busy.

Liverpool still lack the finesse Benítez wants, suggesting an overhaul
to come. "That will have to wait until the summer," he added. "You can
do different things then but, for now, if the players try I can't
criticise them. We have players with the character to stand up in games
like this because we all know this is about more than three points. We
need to win to reduce that gap."

Benítez's record - from Stratego to La Liga - suggests he has the drive
to do just that, though Liverpool's fans will require first-hand
evidence tomorrow to quash any suspicion that Merseyside is witnessing a
tip in the balance of power.

[lfc-news] Kewell agent in Liverpool plea - Independent

The Independent, 10 Mar 2005
Kewell agent in Liverpool plea
By Jamie Gardner

Harry Kewell's agent made the admission yesterday that his client "has
not done anything" for Liverpool for almost 18 months - but insisted
that it is up to the Anfield club, and not up to the Australian
international himself, to get him fit and back on form.

The manager of Liverpool, Rafael Benitez, hinted last month that
Kewell's representative, Bernie Mandic, and the coach of the Australian
national side, Frank Farina, were trying to interfere in how the
26-year-old forward's various injuries were being treated, a claim that
has been denied by both men.

Mandic accepts that Kewell has been unable to make any meaningful
contribution to the Anfield club for nearly a year and a half, but as
the club and supporters become increasingly frustrated by their £5m
signing, the agent claims no one is as upset as the player himself at
his loss of form.

"Harry is the sort of person who has got to where he is because he has
always had high expectations of himself, and he still does have," Mandic
said. "I don't think there could be anyone who is more disappointed
about the way things are going than Harry.

"This is without a doubt the most frustrating spell that he has ever
had. Since November 2003 - let's be frank - he has not done anything.
He's not hiding behind that and I'm not hiding behind that.

"But what is he meant to do? If you have a contract you should be paid
and I would hate to see someone not being paid. Would you simply walk
away? That's ridiculous."

Mandic added: "It's been since November 2003 that he has had the problem
and it's up to the Liverpool people to sort the problem out."

Benitez claimed on Tuesday that he is becoming baffled by Kewell's
fitness problems, with the former Leeds United player unavailable for
last night's Champions' League last 16 match with Bayer Leverkusen.

"One day Harry is OK, and the next he says he is unfit," the Benitez
said. "We will talk with the doctor and try to look at his situation. We
don't know exactly what the problem is. It changes each day.

"One day he says it's the groin; then it's the ankle. Another day he
says he can play. We need to find the solution to this."

[lfc-news] Same old story as U18s look for win - Post

Liverpool Daily Post, 18 Mar 2005
Same old story as U18s look for win
Academy Football with Chris Wright, Daily Post

IT is, sadly, a familiar story for Liverpool under-18s this weekend as
they go in search of their elusive first victory of 2005.

John Owens's side welcome Crewe Alexandra to the Kirkby Academy tomorrow
having not won the FA Premier Academy League since October 9.

It has been a disappointing campaign for the U18s side with just three
victories and now 14 defeats, following last week's 3-1 home reserve
against Wolves.

Liverpool are still bottom of the Group C table, trailing Bolton by six
points and it is looking increasingly likely they will remain there.

Added to that the Academy side failed to gain a well-needed boost in
midweek when they lost 2-0 to Marine in the semi-final of the Liverpool
Senior Cup on Tuesday.

Liverpool now need hope to bounce back in the League. Owens said: "A few
of the lads are playing in the reserves so fatigue sets in and the games
are coming thick and fast. In a sense that is good when you are winning.
We need to work on things to score more goals.

"We have just go to keep plugging away."

Crewe themselves come to Kirkby having lost 4-1 to leaders Blackburn,
but Owens expects another tough match.

He said: "It is always a good football game with Crewe.

"That is the kind of thing, box-to-box that we are equal to most teams.
It is just turning the chances into goals.

"We are looking for strikers, and will continue to do so. At the club we
can't really promote anyone."

GARCIA IN SPAIN CALL-UP
By Mark Platt

Luis Garcia has been rewarded for his improved form of late with a
call-up to the Spain squad for the forthcoming games against China and
Serbia/Montenegro.

The former Barcelona man netted twice in last week's Champions League
tie in Leverkusen, taking his goals tally for the season to eight, and
he'll now be hoping to build on that by winning his first full cap for
Spain.

Although called-up to the squad on two previous occasions he's yet to
make his international debut.

With Xabi Alonso still out injured and Fernando Morientes overlooked,
Garcia is Liverpool's only representative in Luis Aragones' squad.

Spain play a friendly against China on March 26 then the World Cup
qualifier four days later.

[lfc-news] Benitez keeps faith as Finnan warns Reds to improve - Post

Liverpool Daily Post, 18 Mar 2005
Benitez keeps faith as Finnan warns Reds to improve

RAFAEL BENITEZ last night vowed to stay faithful to Liverpool and
continue his quest to bring silverware back to Anfield next season.

The Liverpool manager has been linked with a shock return to Real Madrid
this summer as the Spanish giants consider yet another upheaval at the
Bernabeu.

Benitez is reportedly second in line to be offered the Madrid job is
Vanderlei Luxembergo departs this summer, behind current Juventus coach
Fabio Capello.

Liverpool officials have been reassured by Benitez that he intends to
fulfil a long-term commitment at Anfield, but privately fear the former
Valencia coach would be unable to resist a tempting offer in the future
from the club he served over 22 years.

The Madrid reports have added to Benitez's problems in a week when
Liverpool were held to a goalless draw at home to Blackburn and the
Harry Kewell saga rumbled on.

But ahead of Sunday's Merseyside derby the Liverpool manager insisted he
would still be at the Anfield helm next season. Benitez stated: "I want
to say clearly, I have a deal with Liverpool and I am very happy here
and grateful to the supporters and the board. My idea is to be here next
season and to win trophies with Liverpool.

"People talk a lot, and there are always rumours about Spain. But I see
and hear the people here, the supporters.

"I am grateful to them for their support, as well as the board's. I am
very happy here and want to win trophies with Liverpool next season.

"And I am not thinking about the future, I am only thinking about three
points and reducing the gap on Everton.

"I do not like to hear rumours, I want to make it clear I have a deal
with Liverpool and want to stay here to win trophies."

Steve Finnan, meanwhile, admits Liverpool must improve on Wednesday's
frustrating dis-play against Blackburn if they are to revive their
Champions League aspirations this weekend.

The performance of the Republic of Ireland international provided one of
the few positives on a subdued night at Anfield.

And with Everton expected to bring the same resilience as Blackburn did
to Anfield this Sunday, the former Fulham defender believes Liverpool's
creativity and set-pieces need to improve if they are to find a way through.

Finnan said: "It was disappointing for us on Wednesday. We kept a clean
sheet but didn't create enough chances, and Blackburn deserved their point.

"Maybe we are more suited to the European game at the moment, where
teams are giving us that bit more space by attacking us. We have to work
harder on breaking them down.

"Teams do their homework and know how to play against us. When that
happens, you need to create chances or have good set-pieces, and we had
neither of that against Blackburn. We will need to do a bit more in the
final third on Sunday."

Finnan admits Sunday's derby is now a "must-win" for Liverpool after
they wasted another chance to increase the pressure on Everton.

He added: "The last time we knew Everton had lost (at home to Chelsea)
we went and got beat by Birmingham, so the pressure is on. Sunday is a
must-win game. If we do the gap is down to four points and then you
never know.

"I am looking forward to the game as I missed the last derby. It would
be a disaster for our fans if we lost two in a season. Everyone has had
their eye on the game for a while.

"The games are starting to run out now, so if we want to close the gap
we need to start winning games, starting on Sunday."

Liverpool Echo, 18 Mar 2005
Countdown to the 201st Merseyside derby

DAVID FAIRCLOUGH has already taken in one derby match this week. And
whatever the Merseyside version throws up on Sunday can't possibly
compare with what he witnessed in Plovdiv on Tuesday night.

The former Reds star - himself a derby day matchwinner in 1976 - has
been in Bulgaria on business.. He was invited to the Botev Plovdiv v
Lokomotiv Plovdiv showdown by Hristo Stoichkov and won't forget what he
saw in a hurry.

"It was absolutely incredible," he declared. "Both the referee and the
linesman allowed a highly dubious Lokomotiv goal to stand and the place
just erupted.

"Play was held up for 10 minutes while the fans rioted, the police piled
in and Botev officials tried to persuade their players to walk off the
pitch.

"It went on for ages before they finally restored some sort of order and
Plovdiv eventually won 2-1 with a silver goal in extra-time.

"Even then it wasn't finished. The next morning the referee and the
linesman were banned. Whatever happens at Anfield on Sunday can't even
begin to compare !"

Fairclough has seen plenty of Everton this season and he expects the
Blues to come to Anfield with a similar formation and attitude to that
shown by Blackburn in midweek.

"I have seen then play some open, attractive stuff, but for the most
part they make life difficult for teams facing them.

"The atmosphere on Sunday might force them to come out a little more,
but I can't see it. It's up to Liverpool to be good enough on the day to
break them down."

So, do Liverpool have the players to break down Everton in Sunday's
201st derby match? David Fairclough assesses the likely Liverpool
starting line-up . . .

In the Red corner

JERZY DUDEK
He has made one or two mistakes this season which have proved costly,
but I think those errors have taken people's eye off what he does do
very well - which is make crucial, match-influencing saves. There are
plenty of other keepers not capable of doing that, but Jerzy can make
great saves.

STEVE FINNAN
He has been really steady this season and has grown in stature. I think
he has responded to the faith shown in him by Rafael Benitez and will
not be at all overawed by the importance of the occasion - after all, he
is a regular international. Occasionally I would like to see more
telling balls into the box from him, but Liverpool will have no worries
about him on Sunday.

JAMIE CARRAGHER
What can you say that hasn't already been said? He typifies what every
Liverpool fan wants to see from a Liverpool player - commitment, passion
and a burning desire not to lose. The occasions when he has been less
than outstanding this season you can count on the fingers of one hand.

SAMI HYYPIA
I was impressed by Mauricio Pellegrino on Wednesday against Blackburn,
but a derby match is not the time to experiment and I expect Hyypia to
come back and re-establish his settled partner-ship with Carragher. Sami
has put in some of his best performances of the season in recent weeks -
notably in the Carling Cup final - and Liverpool can rely on him.
Occasionally he can get exposed in a one against one situation, but the
way Everton play, that is unlikely to happen on Sunday.

STEVE WARNOCK
He deserves a run in the first team and it's encouraging from
Liverpool's point of view to see a local lad like him get in and do so
well. I would certainly have no worries about him on Sunday. He's
aggressive, doesn't make glaring mistakes and tackles crisply.

LUIS GARCIA
Sunday is a real test for the Spaniard. In Europe he looks more
comfortable than he does on occasions in the Premiership when he has
been guilty of giving away possession far too easily. What I have been
impressed by, though, is his ability to get into goalscoring positions.
He could be a threat to Everton on Sunday - whether he is played out
wide or just off Morientes - and he can be a Liverpool matchwinner.

STEVEN GERRARD
I just wish Stevie was allowed to get his head down and get on with his
football, but that doesn't look like it's ever going to happen. It's
difficult to comprehend the pressure he's been playing under in recent
weeks, and I think he has done remarkably well in the circumstances. But
what is undeniable is that when he's on his game, he is a world class
talent. Let's just hope Sunday is his day.

DIETMAR HAMANN
His performance on Sunday will be vital to Liverpool. Central midfield
is where Everton are strong, but he is capable of breaking things up and
winning plenty of possession for the Reds. He can be exposed for a lack
of mobility at times - and I enjoyed seeing him get further forward
earlier in the season - but he still has a vital role to play.

JOHN ARNE RIISE
A potential Liverpool matchwinner. I think Everton were much happier to
be facing Harry Kewell down their left side in the Goodison derby
earlier this season, but John Arne's form this season will cause Everton
some concerns. He won't be fazed by the occasion or whoever he is lining
up against and I see him as a likely hero.

FERNANDO MORIENTES
He is undoubtedly a class act, but I thought he looked short of
match-sharpness on Wednesday. He has been frustrated by injury and
ineligibility for the Champions League in recent weeks, but he will be
all the better for Wednesday's 90 minutes and I wouldn't bet against him
getting on the scoresheet.

MILAN BAROS
You don't know what you're going to get from Milan at the moment. But he
is tenacious and will battle all day long, and because he was so
disappointing on Wednesday, that could be just the motivation he needs
to turn it on, on Sunday. He has a point to prove.

DAVE WATSON has been to Anfield before knowing that a victory would as
good as end the challenge from their neighbours.

On that occasion Liverpool won the battle, but Everton won the war - but
Watson admits even lifting the League Championship trophy a fortnight
later couldn't completely cancel out the disappointment of losing the derby.

"I can see the similarities between Sunday's visit to Anfield and our
game there in 1987," explained Watson "when we knew if we won we'd have
as good as clinched the Championship.

"That year we always felt it was only a matter of time before we won the
title, but we desperately wanted to win it at Anfield.

"That was the biggest disappointment about that match. We could have
been running around Anfield celebrating a championship, but instead we
had to wait until the following Bank Holiday weekend when we went to
Norwich to clinch it.

"Likewise, Everton will know that if they can win at Anfield they will
have a 10-point lead over the Reds which will take some pulling back.

"Both teams will want to keep it tight. Everton don't need to go chasing
a win, while Liverpool will know that if they go a goal down, Everton
are more than capable of shutting up shop and making it very difficult
for the Reds to get back into the game."

Today Dave Watson runs the rule over the players aiming to all but
secure Champions League qualification by getting a result at Anfield . . .

In the Blue corner

NIGEL MARTYN
He has this great calming influence which is vitally important to the
rest of the defence. When he comes for a ball there's no panic,
everything is done with an air of steady reassurance and he always has a
smile on his face.

TONY HIBBERT
Defensively there are absolutely no worries about Tony. People have
questioned his distribution and his ability to get forward, but on
Sunday I wouldn't be worried about him overlapping all that much. His
priority will be to limit John Arne Riise's effectiveness down
Liverpool's left.

CENTRAL DEFENCE
Davie Weir and Alan Stubbs are Everton's real steady Eddies which is
why, fitness permitting, I would go with that partnership on Sunday.
Joseph Yobo would probably get the nod if you were worried about pace,
but while Baros is undoubtedly quick, you rarely see Stubbsy or Dave
caught out like that. They have the experience and the calming influence.

ALESSANDRO PISTONE
Sandro's had a great season. We've all looked at him in the past and
seen a defender who is good in the air, has two great feet and is quick,
but there have occasionally been question marks about his desire. That
accusation can't be levelled at him this season. He has been up there
among the most consistent defenders in the Premiership. If you could
have a fit Alessandro Pistone week-in, week-out, I think most managers
would be happy with that.

LEON OSMAN
If you are looking for a bit of creativity and someone who can knock in
a vital goal, then Ossie is crucial to Everton's game-plan. He is a
young lad who can pick out a pass and when he gets into the box he
always has a trick or two up his sleeve.

TIM CAHILL
He has arguably been one of Everton's players of the season with the
number of invaluable goals he has grabbed from midfield. He might have
had even more - and one missed chance will still be playing on his mind
now from the last time the two sides met at Goodison. His miss didn't
make any difference that day, but he'll still be desperate to completely
bury that memory by scoring at Anfield. He is a potential Everton
matchwinner.

LEE CARSLEY
For me, Carsley is Everton's top man. He does all the dirty jobs in
games that aren't really appreciated. Sometimes he doesn't stand out for
the ordinary fan, but his work-rate, his ability to break moves up and
keep things simple is invaluable. Every Evertonian, of course, will also
remember that he is capable of scoring winning goals in derby matches!
Lee Carsley's presence is crucial to Everton.

MIKEL ARTETA
I honestly don't know all that much about him, but he scored within
minutes of his first Old Firm match in Glasgow, so maybe we should take
that as an omen! By all accounts he was impressive at Villa Park when
Everton produced their best performance of the season and his recovery
from injury is vital if Everton are to successfully employ their 4-5-1
formation.

KEVIN KILBANE
There aren't many good left-sided players around in the Premiership, and
Kevin has done a very good job for Everton over the past
season-and-a-half. He is incredibly hardworking and with his height can
be very important at set-pieces. Just look out for him arriving at the
far post on Sunday.

MARCUS BENT
I still remember the reaction of Evertonians when Marcus Bent arrived
last summer. Underwhelmed is a fair description. But for me he has set
the tone for Everton's performances all season with his work-rate and
his intelligent running. His finishing isn't top notch, but then you
tend to have to pay more than £450,000 for a top class finisher, but his
contribution will again be vital.

JAMES BEATTIE
There is no guarantee that James will be involved from the start on
Sunday, but I just have this feeling about James that he is a big game
player with a knack for producing when it matters most. He can certainly
cope with the occasion and the atmosphere at Anfield - and while I think
Marcus Bent deserves to start, if James is involved I can see him being
Everton's matchwinner.

DUNCAN FERGUSON
When the teamsheet goes in on Sunday, and Duncan is there on the subs'
bench, you can rest assured Liverpool's players will take notice.
They'll be saying to each other 'don't kick any of their strikers or
that big nuisance will be on.' Duncan still has the ability to upset
defenders and though he may only have a limited part to play in the
game, you can be sure it will be influential.

Liverpool Echo, 18 Mar 2005
Reds drawn to face Juventus
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL and Juventus will face each other for the first time since the
Heysel Stadium disaster 20 years ago after the sides were paired in the
Champions League quarter-final.

Chief executive Rick Parry says both sets of fans will be involved in
discussions to ensure the events of 1985 are remembered prior to the
fixture.

The first leg of the emotional tie will take place at Anfield on April
5/6 with the return in Turin a week later on April 12/13.

And if Liverpool could progress through a tough fixture, they could meet
Chelsea in the semi-finals. The Londoners will face Bayern Munich in the
last eight.

However, it's the meeting with Juventus which is sure to dominate the
agenda for the next few weeks, with memories of notorious off-field
activities provoking as much coverage as the game itself.

The teams haven't met in any capacity since the notorious final of 1985
when 39 Italian fans were killed.

The events led to English clubs being banned from European competition.

Anfield chief Parry said: "The games don't come any bigger than this.
For sure we will be marking the 20th anniversary of Heysel. That's
something we have already spoken about because there is a deep
friend-ship between the clubs and the fans.

"It's a really exciting draw. We would have taken anyone at this stage.
We know what European nights at Anfield are like. There's a long way to
go in this competition and some extremely good team in it, but anything
can happen. We respect everyone but fear no-one. We would also relish
the chance to face Chelsea in the semi-final."

Aside from the historical significance, Rafa Benitez's side now faces a
massive task to maintain its European hopes.

Juventus are riding high in serie A and boast a wealth of talent.

Lilian Thuram, Fabio Cannavoro, Pavel Nedved and David Trezeguet are a
few of the star names Liverpool must overcome.

The prize for progression is a potential all-Premiership meeting with
Chelsea or Bayern. If Liverpool do reach the semi-final, they'll have
the advantage of being at home in the second leg.

* Chelsea are 100/30 joint favourites with AC Milan to win the Champions
League with William Hill who make Juventus 7/2 third favourites and also
offer 13/2 Lyon; 7/1 Bayern; 8/1 Inter; 18/1 Liverpool; 20/1 PSV.

RAFA: MAYBE WE CAN WIN THE CL
Paul Rogers in Leverkusen

Rafael Benitez tonight spoke with pride about the way his injury-hit
squad had risen to the occasion and forced their critics to eat their
words as they stormed into the Champions League quarter finals after a
6-2 aggregate in Germany.

Even with a 3-1 lead from the first-leg at Anfield, many tipped the Reds
to be knocked out of the competition but goals from Luis Garcia and
Milan Baros ensured a safe passage through to the last eight of Europe's
premier cup competition.

"I think we played very well in the first half. We started with a very
high tempo and we got the goals, which made our task a lot easier.
We have played better in the Champions League this season against
Monaco, Deportivo and Olympiacos but tonight was a good night for the
fans, the players and everyone connected to the club.

"We know how important this competition is for the fans and that is why
I am very happy with the result tonight. We have been working very hard
to achieve this result and maybe other teams will now look at Liverpool
and think, 'Be careful.'

"We are not thinking about winning the competition right now. Maybe we
can win it but first we must concentrate on our next match. We will wait
to see the draw and then prepare for that tie."

Asked by a supporter who had bunked into the press conference whether
Liverpool could catch Everton in the race for fourth place, Rafa simply
smiled and answered, "Yes."

With that last comment, he got up and left before posing for pictures
with the supporters. His work for the night was done.

Sunshine honours for Emlyn
By Kate Mansey, Liverpool Echo

THE name of football legend Emlyn Hughes will live on in Merseyside
after former colleagues launched an appeal in his memory.

A charity tribute night will be held to commemorate the former England
and Liverpool captain who died last November from a brain tumour, aged 57.

Money raised will fund a Sunshine coach to enable disadvantaged children
in the region to go on school trips.

Liverpool Former Players Association will join forces with the city's
Variety Club to throw the fundraiser in Emlyn's name.

Together they hope to raise more than £20,000.

Emlyn's widow Barbara has backed the idea for a coach bearing her late
husband's name.

Emlyn was signed for Liverpool by Bill Shankly in 1967 and won 62 caps
for England during his career.

Former Reds player and secretary for the association Ian Callaghan said:
"Mrs Hughes is fully supporting the idea.

"I played with Emlyn for many years and once you met him you never
forgot him.

"He will be remembered for his enthusiasm, life and, of course, his
football skills.

"Although he wasn't from Merseyside I feel sure he would be thrilled
that something in his name will permanently be on Merseyside.

"He was very popular and we're expecting a good turnout on the night."

Jim Donaldson of the Variety Club said: "The former players will help us
to help disadvantaged children across Merseyside.

"The coach will have Emlyn Hughes' name painted on the side in memory of
him and children who wouldn't normally get to go out on trips will be
more mobile."

The former players association was formed seven years ago and helps
raise money for good causes across the region.

Mr Callaghan said: "The important thing is that we join together, enjoy
each other's company and make a lot of money for charity. I'm sure this
will be a well-supported event."

Around 550 people are expected to attend the Variety Club dinner at
Liverpool's Adelphi hotel at 7.30pm on Thursday, May 5.

Tickets are £50 a head and can be bought by calling 0151-653 1800.

PA Sport, 8 Mar 2005
L4 GROUP OUT OF PICTURE

Liverpool have dismissed any chance of American-based L4 Group investing
in the club but remain determined to find new funds from elsewhere.

In an announcement via the Stock Exchange, the Anfield club ruled out a
cash injection from the consortium put together by two US-based
entertainment executives and thought to have the backing of the Kraft
family - owners of the New England Patriots (NFL) and the New England
Revolution soccer franchises.

"The board of Liverpool FC confirms it is continuing discussions with a
number of parties regarding a potential investment of new funds into the
club," said the statement.

"The club has discontinued discussions with the L4 Group. A further
announcement will be made when appropriate."

Just three months ago, Liverpool denied they were in negotiations with
L4. Conversations have obviously taken place since then, although the
outcome appears to have been unsatisfactory.

Tuesday's statement reflects the comments of chief executive Rick Parry,
who yesterday admitted Liverpool were still in talks with would-be
investors and admitted his club's third-largest shareholder Steve Morgan
is still in the frame after seeing previous bids rejected.

"We are looking for the right investment. A lot of effort is going into
that - and when the process has been completed we will then announce
something," he said.

Liverpool badly need extra funds as they seek to bankroll a new stadium
in Stanley Park, the cost of which has spiralled, and significant squad
rebuilding under manager Rafael Benitez.

The Reds have fallen behind their traditional rivals on the pitch - and
Benitez, who arrived at Anfield last summer, is planning a major
overhaul of his squad in the close season in an attempt to close the gap
on Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal.

Liverpool Daily Post, 8 Mar 2005
Defeat sees U18s remain bottom
Academy Football with Chris Wright, Daily Post

LIVERPOOL under-18s fell to another crushing defeat when they lost 4-1
at Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.

John Owens's side are still looking for their first win of 2005 and
victory on Saturday would have given them hope of moving off the foot of
the FA Premier Academy League Group C table for the first time since
early on in the campaign.

Three points would have seen them go level on points with Bolton, but
victory means the Trotters now have a six-point gap as well as a game in
hand.

With just seven matches left Liverpool are looking increasingly likely
to finish bottom of the North West division.

On Saturday they were up against it from the start. Bolton opened the
scoring after two minutes and doubled their advantage 10 minutes later.

Liverpool managed to pull a goal back on the half-hour. A strong run by
Scottish youth international Ryan Wilkie brought about the goal. He
played in Phil Townley on the wing and his cross was finished off by
trialist Luke Coleman.

But just before the break any hopes of a comeback were dashed as Bolton
restored their two-goal advantage.

The Trotters added another in the second half as Liverpool slumped to
another disappointing defeat. Owens said: "It was a bad a start and it
was an uphill task from there on.

"When we scored - a well-worked goal by Luke Coleman - we had a chance.

"I felt if we had got to half-time still at 2-1, we could have rallied
the troops for the second half. But it was poor defending on a free-kick
and that killed the game.

"We had put a few good moves together in the first half, but the second
half we didn't perform as well. It was not a good team performance."

Owens added: "It was good for Luke Coleman to score and I played Ryan
Wilkie as a more central player behind the striker and he did very well
and looked lively. Phil Townley also did well on the left in the first
half. It was good to see those two at least showing better performances
than in previous weeks."

LIVERPOOL UNDER-18s: Lancaster; Hitchen, D Smith, J Smith, O'Donnell;
Noon (Barnett 60), Guthrie, Barratt, Townley; Wilkie, Coleman (Lin-field
60). Subs: Willis, Pringle.

Liverpool Echo, 10 Mar 2005
Glad to be back
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

STEVEN GERRARD admitted he was concerned about his dip in form prior to
Liverpool's demolition job of Bayer Leverkusen last night.

The skipper was back to his inspirational best as a Luis Garcia double
and Milan Baros ensured a comfortable 6-2 aggregate win.

The quarter-final draw takes place a week tomorrow, and Gerrard says no
side in Europe will relish a trip to Anfield.

He's also hoping his fine performance in the BayArena will kickstart a
positive end to the season.

"No-one knows more than me if I'm playing well or not and in my last
five or six games I've been below the standard I expect from myself,"
said Gerrard.

"The manager has told me he wanted more from me so I felt I needed a big
performance. I'm happy with how I played last night. It was a lot better
than I've been for the last five weeks.

"The manager will always want more from us whether we're playing well or
not. Even though we won 3-1, when we got back to the dressing room he
told us he didn't think the second half was good enough.

"That's why he's such a successful coach. He won't settle for any
individuals or the team dropping their standards.

"We were sloppy in the second half and the manager wasn't as happy as he
was after the first. When you get a big lead and know the other side
needs six to beat you, you can let things slip a little.

"We settled more than we would have had the game still been tight. The
manager doesn't want us to take our foot off the pedal at all.

"At the same time, we know there's a lot to be positive about from the
first half, particularly when you consider our away form this season.

"I think we shocked them because they expected us to sit back and be
negative. Instead, we got at them, took control and dominated the first
half."

Many Anfield officials are hoping a swift opportunity to exact revenge
on Chelsea will come their way in the last eight.

The English clubs can now be paired in Europe and Gerrard believes
Liverpool can shock whoever they face.

"There are a lot of teams left who are stronger than others," he said.

"Every tie will be difficult and I wouldn't like to choose to play any
particular side. Everyone will want a battle of Britain and if we can
play like that and get a few more injured players back in time, we'd
fancy our chances against anyone.

"We've got to keep this kind of form on the road. We've not had many
problems at Anfield, but this shows we are capable of doing it away too."

Gerrard wasn't the only star performer in Germany and he highlighted the
superb contribution of youngster Stephen Warnock.

"Steve was brilliant," said Gerrard. "Considering he's only made a
handful of European appearances, it was an exceptionally good game by
him. I'm really pleased for him."

We've recently been suffering from some delays in getting the stories published to the site. It's something out of our control but we are doing what we can to minimise the delays. If it gets to a point where we have a story saying Liverpool have been succesful in winning the European Cup thanks to a goal from Dalglish at Wembley then we'll have to do even more to minimise the delays! PA Sport, 9 Mar 2005
Bayer Leverkusen 1 Liverpool 3 (Agg: 2-6)

Liverpool cruised through to the Champions League quarter-finals with a
3-1 victory in Germany which brought back all the distant memories of
the Anfield club's illustrious past in this competition.

Stripped of almost a full side through injuries and ineligibility,
Liverpool destroyed a Bayer side who are not used to losing on their own
ground.

Luis Garcia gave Liverpool a first-half platform with two goals, before
Milan Baros added the third late in the second period with the game way
out of Leverkusen's reach. Daniel Bierofka scored a consolation goal
with three minutes left.

Milan Baros could have got Liverpool off to a great start after just
four minutes when he took a Luis Garcia pass and found himself clear of
his marker, but chose to jink the ball on to his right foot and send in
a weak shot that Jorg Butt saved one-handed.

Baros had another half chance when John Arne Riise found him on the edge
of the box, but the covering defenders quickly swamped the Czech striker.

And then when Baros outpaced Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker on 11 minutes,
he looked to be cut down by the defender in the box, but French referee
Alain Sars waved away all appeals.

But throughout all this, Bayer were having by far the most possession
and were slowly pushing Liverpool back and making them run and run to
break up the flow.

Another Baros run got him away from Placente, but with Gerrard arriving
unmarked in the box, the square ball across goal towards the skipper was
nowhere near accurate enough.

Leverkusen wasted clear openings when Landon Donavan miskicked and then
Sena Franca repeated the error.

Gerrard's 25-yard shot was touched around by Butt and, although the
corner was wasted, Leverkusen did not clear it properly and the ball
arrived back at Gerrard's feet.

He instantly fed the ball into the box and Luis Garcia was on hand to
clip the ball past Butt with the outside of his foot to give Liverpool
the away goal they so desperately wanted.

Liverpool extended their lead in the 32nd minute with Gerrard again the
supplier, sending in a corner that Sami Hyypia headed down and Luis
Garcia swept past Butt from close range.

Liverpool's delirious fans were in dreamland with the Germans utterly
deflated.

Luis Garcia almost got his hat-trick on 38 minutes when he was set up by
Baros but saw his 12 yard drive tipped over by Butt.

Gerrard started the second half in increasingly dominant form.

Bayer had never got to grips with his roving role and he kept popping up
in critical positions to break up play and feed Baros, Riise and Luis
Garcia.

Bayer wasted their best chance when Daniel Bierofka crossed from the
right and the unmarked Franka hooked the ball down and up over the bar
before Andrej Voronin drove over from another Bierofka cross.

Dietmar Hamann, playing despite not fully recovering from an ankle
problem that kept him out at Newcastle, was replaced on 62 minutes by
Vladimir Smicer.

Almost immediately Gerrard saw a blistering drive blocked by Butt and
was alert enough to regain control and set up Baros for a close-range
chance the striker sliced badly across goal.

But on 66 minutes Baros finally found the net and finished the contest
beyond question. Warnock and Riise created the chance, and Baros jinked
inside a defender to drill home the third.

The Germans sent on Gonzalo Castro Randon for Carsten Ramelow, while
Liverpool replaced Jamie Carragher with John Welsh, Igor Biscan dropping
into the back four.

Then Antonio Nunez took over from Steve Finnan, the winger taking up the
right-back slot as Benitez was able to test out a few ideas with the
game more than won.

Bayer grabbed a goal with two minutes three through Jacek Krzynowek, but
by then large areas of the stadium had emptied, the German fans knowing
this was a lost cause a long time ago for their heroes.

Bayer Leverkusen: Butt, Schneider, Callsen-Bracker, Ramelow (Castro 70),
Placente, Babic, Bierofka, Krzynowek, Donovan (Fritz 53), Franca,
Berbatov (Voronin 32).
Subs not used: Starke, Ozturk, Dum, Rottger.

Liverpool Daily Post, 14 Mar 2005
Moran recalls what made the starts so successful
By Nick Hilton, Daily Post

THE team sheet reads like the dream of a Liverpool fan who finds a
ticket to go time travelling. Many of the greatest players to stride the
turf of Anfield over the past 30 years are united in one, jaw-dropping
line-up.

Bill Shankly's protégés Kevin Keegan and Phil Thompson; giants of the
Bob Paisley era Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush, Alan Hansen and Bruce
Grobbelaar; men of compelling talent who followed them such as John
Barnes right up to players still active in the modern era such as Steve
McManaman and Robbie Fowler.

They are all drawn together under the name of a Liverpool legends XI and
in the cause of tsunami Soccer Aid by Jason McAteer, the driving force
behind the charity spectacular at Anfield on Easter Sunday. Not to
mention a footballer who wore the Liverpool shirt with pride on more
than 100 occasions himself.

The dozen players confirmed in the legends line-up have shared 28 major
trophies in the years between 1973 and 1995.

Here, though, we must take a reality check because most of these men are
matured beyond their prime as footballers.

Roy Evans with Chris Lawler, Joe Fagan and Ronnie Moran after winning
the European Cup in Rome in 1984

Most are into their 40s and 50s, their playing powers diminished by time
even if the vivid colour of their deeds will never fade.

They are returning to the field to raise money for millions of people on
the other side of the world whose own lives have been blighted beyond
our comprehension.

They will do it by teasing the memories of those who watched them at the
peak of their powers or by putting flesh on the images of old video
clips viewed by fans too young to have seen them live.

But one man, perhaps more than any other who expects to be in the
audience on Sunday, March 27 will be able to watch these greying heroes
of the past and match them with the young footballers who first walked
into Anfield all those seasons ago.

Ronnie Moran coached all of them, from Keegan to Fowler.

The long-serving member of the Anfield bootroom, who worked under
Shankly, Paisley, Joe Fagan, Dalglish, Graeme Souness, Roy Evans and
Gerard Houllier remembers the impact each of them made on the Liverpool
team of their day.

Here Moran offers his unique insight into a Liverpool team from all seasons.

BRUCE GROBBELAAR: He was tagged as a goalkeeper who made mistakes but
when you consider the number of trophies he won with Liverpool he could
not have made so many of them.

When Bruce made a mistake it tended to be a real bloomer. The important
thing was he never let it bother him. His game did not suffer. And he
always gave you 100%.

Not much has been made over the years of the way Bruce comically wobbled
his legs during the penalty shoot-out in the 1984 European Cup Final. It
put the Roma players off completely. Then again, if Bruce had told us
beforehand he was going to start larking about during a penalty
shoot-out he would have been hit on the head.

PHIL THOMPSON: Phil came through the ranks and I worked with him in the
reserves. From his first training session you could see he had a lot of
talent. Some people worried that he wasn't going to be strong enough to
play in the first team because he was so slightly built.

Shanks said he had the legs of a sparrow. But his heart was big enough,
he was good at reading the game and he certainly knew how to tackle. His
record of success over the years proved we were right to have faith in him.

ALAN HANSEN: When we first brought Alan down from Partick Thistle in
Scotland he wasn't ready for our first team. We needed to get him harder
mentally. But give him his due, Alan learned a lot in the reserves and
once he made the breakthrough he never looked back.

Alan had lots of skill for a centre-back and his brain was working all
the time. That's how he made the game look easy. But you could never
model a player on Alan Hansen or expect anyone else to do what Alan did.

When he started his new career as a TV pundit, a friend said to me: 'He
won't last long in that, he's not the type'.

These days whenever I see my friend I tease him about how Alan is
struggling on TV.

JOHN BARNES: He had great skill. John was an honest lad who tended to
drop back too far when he first came to us. Perhaps it was something he
had to do during his days with Watford.

We had to say to him: Get into the opposition half and let the bloke
behind you do the defensive work. We felt that when he had the ball at
his feet he could do things most other players could not do.

I think John improved as a player by coming to us and of course when he
got a little older he did eventually drop back into a deeper role.

KEVIN KEEGAN: Shanks took Bob Paisley and Joe Fagan up to Scunthorpe on
a scouting mission to watch Kevin in 1971. It was a long journey in
those premotorway days but after half an hour of the game Shanks said:
"Come on we're going home. I've seen enough. I'm signing him."

Kevin played his pre-season games in the reserves with me that year, as
a right midfielder. When we were short of a striker one day I tried him
up front. He proved his ability so quickly that he never played a
Central League game for me. He went into the first team, scored on his
debut against Nottingham Forest and never looked back.

The biggest thing we look for in play-ers was their desire to win and
Kevin had that in abundance as well as lots of ability. He was always
bubbly, never a problem to deal with.

I thought he was very brave in 1976 when he said he was going to leave
at the end of that season, early on one or two fans had a go at him but
he finished off in that season by helping us win the European Cup, the
League title and to reach the FA Cup final. Not bad for a farewell season.

KENNY DALGLISH: Bob's answer to replacing Kevin Keegan. We signed him
from Celtic, a club that had been built up along the same lines as
ourselves. Shanks and Jock Stein were like brothers! They actually
worked on the same system, I found out later. So Kenny fitted in
perfectly at Liverpool.

He wasn't the quickest mover but he was 20 yards ahead of the opposition
in his head. He used to con opponents and leave them for dead. He could
anticipate where the ball was going and there were times when he seemed
to make the ball come to him.

He had a wonderful record of success as a player with us then went out
and did the same as a manager, starting off with the double here in his
first season. He knew an awful lot about the game.

IAN RUSH: Ian could have been Kenny's brother because as players each
one knew what the other was doing. That was the key to the success of
their partner-ship. Kenny would supply the passes and Ian knew when and
where to make the runs into the spaces Kenny picked out.

It's one thing for strikers to get into scoring positions, quite another
to put away the percentage Ian scored. He did not miss very often.

Yet when Ian first arrived from Chester City goals were the problem. He
had been playing in the reserves and getting decent reports without
scoring too often. He got frustrated and went in to see Bob, wanting to
know why he wasn't in the team.

Bob said: "Go out and score some goals in the reserves and I'll put you
in the first team".

That's when Ian started scoring and after that he didn't stop.

ROBBIE FOWLER: When Robbie was coming up through the junior ranks at
Liverpool we knew we had an exceptional talent on our hands. He could
put the ball into the net from positions noone else could.

Yet even with all of his natural ability Robbie always wanted to work at
improving himself.

I remember he scored five goals in a cup tie once and was looking
pleased with himself when he came into the dressing room. I said:
"Robbie, you missed two chances tonight, you could have had seven goals".

He's always remembered that.

STEVE McMANAMAN: Steve says this is going to be his last season before
retiring as a player and watching him now for Manchester City reminds me
that he has not changed the way he goes about the game since he started
at Liverpool.

I remember noticing him as a youngster who walked with a bit of a
swagger when I saw him coming down the passage. When I saw him on the
training pitch and in games you saw that same swagger. He went on to
play for perhaps the biggest club in the world in Real Madrid.

Alonso aims at Europe
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

XABI ALONSO is on target to make a welcome return to the Liverpool
starting line-up in time to feature in the Champions League quarter-final.

Rafa Benitez today revealed he's optimistic the midfielder will be
available for the second leg of the last eight clash, scheduled for
April 12/13.

Alonso is only two weeks away from a return to full training, with a
possible reserve game pencilled in against Leeds on April 6.

The playmaker's recovery from a broken ankle represents a timely upturn
in fortune for the Reds ahead of the climax of the season.

Benitez believes Liverpool's inconsistent Premiership form since January
has a lot to do with Alonso's absence.

"If everything continues okay, I hope Xabi will be in full training by
the last week of

March. He will be like a new, very important player for us," said
Benitez today.

"Maybe Xabi will be available for the second game of the quarter-final.
He is improving a lot.

"If he's back training with the rest of the squad by the end of the
month, like we hope, he has a good chance.

"It will be good for the team spirit to have him back. Not only will it
give the side a lift, it will also make those who are playing work even
harder to stay in the team."

Liverpool will discover on Friday who they'll face in the last eight of
Europe, but there's plenty of hard work in the Premiership before then.

Contrary to weekend reports, Benitez doesn't believe winger Harry Kewell
requires a three-month rest, suggesting the Aussie should be able to
play within 'three weeks'.

That means he'll definitely miss the Mersey-side derby on Sunday but
could be back for the home game with Bolton on April 2.

Fernando Morientes, meanwhile, will return for Wednesday's Anfield clash
against Blackburn.

"Morientes had a tight groin but it wasn't too serious. He's been
training okay and he'll be fit for the next match," confirmed Benitez.

"Harry Kewell is still unavailable, but I hope he'll be available in two
or three weeks."

* Tickets for Wednesday night's game with Blackburn went on general sale
today.

[lfc-news] Expert: Kewell should abandon this season - Post

Kewell should abandon this season - expert
By David Prior, Daily Post Staff

HARRY KEWELL'S lingering injury problems can only be sorted out if the
Australian does not play again until next season, a leading specialist
has warned.

The winger was forced to withdraw from Liverpool's trip to Bayer
Leverkusen last week with another injury, the exact nature of which an
exasperated Rafael Benitez admitted he did not even know himself.

Kewell has been out of action since limping off in Carling Cup final
defeat to Chelsea last month, and now Holland-based physiotherpist Andre
van Alphen has claimed the only answer is a three-month rest.

"My opinion is for a good treatment period so the body gets time to heal
and recuperate," Van Alphen said.

"This will take about three months to full fitness. It is impossible to
recover while playing football."

And Australia national coach Frank Farina admitted Kewell and the
Anfield club had to now make a decision about his short-term future.

"I saw his comeback game after seven or eight weeks out and he did quite
well but it wasn't the Harry of old," Farina said. "He is very
frustrated that he can't perform at his best. What happens next is a
decision for the club to make, the medical staff and Harry himself."

Meanwhile, Michael Owen is backing Liverpool to pull off a shock triumph
in this season's Champions League.

The former Anfield striker phoned some of his former team-mates
immediately after their 3-1 second-leg triumph in Leverkusen, with his
own side Real Madrid having been dumped out of the competition by Juventus.

And Owen said: "Liverpool have got more chance now than Porto did at the
same stage last season. Porto weren't fancied, nor were Greece in the
European Champion-ship, and Liverpool won't be fancied either.

"There are strange results at the top level nowadays. The game is not
like it was 10, 20, 30 years ago. Anything can happen. Hopefully
Liverpool can get a nice draw and keep going."

He added: "These are the ups and downs of football. Now, if Liverpool
get knocked out in the quarter-finals and don't finish fourth (in the
Premiership) it will be one of their worst seasons. But I want them to
go all the way."

Liverpool Daily Post, 8 Mar 2005
Benitez's men must carry fight to Bayer
By Mark Lawrenson, Daily Post

THANKS to Jerzy Dudek's lapse at Anfield, Liverpool go to Leverkusen
needing a goal this week.

Looking at the teams the Germans have turned over on their own patch,
you would not feel confident of holding them out for the whole game, but
if Liverpool could nick one, then their job becomes a lot easier.

With that in mind, Rafael Benitez will need to be more aggressive in how
he sets his team up than he was at Newcastle.

If we know anything about Newcastle it is that you can get at them, even
with one fit striker. All right, so Alain Boumsong may have stiffened
them up in defence, but while they will come at you, they'll give you a
chance as well.

However, if your gameplan is to sit back and invite them on to you, then
you will be in trouble. That goes double for Bayer, who are very strong
at home.

If you sit back, then immediately the home team push their full backs
forward and if they are good players, they can hurt you.

If you look to break at pace and with runners from midfield however,
they are a lot more uncertain about going forward, for fear of what may
happen behind them. Having players running behind you changes your
mentality and is a lot more difficult to cope with. That means that the
midfield and full-backs for Liverpool must try to carry the fight.

Milan Baros gets past the Leverkusen defence during the Champions League
match at Anfield

It also means Milan Baros has to look like the player he was in Euro
2004 and not the one he was at St James' Park.

After he was dropped for the Carling Cup final, I could understand
Baros's anger. If I was him and I'd been left out in favour of Harry
Kewell and Luis Garcia in present form, I'd have been upset too.

To my mind, Baros is more effective than either of those two. He may
have his faults about playing with his head down, but he will have a go
and run at defences all day, working extremely hard.

Where he went wrong was in expressing his disappointment to a Czech
journalist and not to Rafael Benitez face-to-face. A talk to clear the
air would have been the best solution instead of airing their
difficulties in public.

As it is now, Benitez will have to talk to Baros to try and impress upon
the striker how important he will be in Germany.

As Liverpool's spearhead, their hopes of nicking a goal rest largely
with him, so this is no time for him to spit the dummy out and sulk.

I have been in dressing rooms where players have argued and dis-agreed
with managers and each other, but when the games came around, you
played. End of story.

Making his players perform no matter what is where a manager earns his
corn and Benitez and Baros appear to have enough about them to make that
happen.

Of course, it almost goes without saying that another player Benitez
will be talking to is Steven Gerrard. The Liverpool captain has given
everything and dragged the rest of the team with him on so many
occasions in the past few years, and this is another game where they
need him to be firing on all cylinders.

If Liverpool can get the result they need, and I believe they will, then
the competition could open up for them as a lot of good teams will be
going out in the next couple of days.

Look at last season when Porto and Monaco got to the final. Not many
people would have predicted that before the competition started, so who
is to say how far Liverpool will go?

[lfc-news] Carson's surprise at Reds debut - Echo

Liverpool Echo, 7 Mar 2005
Carson's surprise at Reds debut
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL youngster Scott Carson today spoke of his shock after being
handed a surprise debut against Newcastle.

The teenager revealed he was only informed he'd be playing when the team
arrived at St James' Park.

Manager Rafa Benitez made the decision due to Jerzy Dudek's shin injury,
although it's unclear if Carson will now get a run in the side.

Benitez said prior to the game a new keeper needs at least four games to
establish himself in the first team, which could mean Carson retains his
place.

The 19-year-old wasn't overworked in the North East, despite the 1-0
defeat, so Benitez must decide whether to persist with him or opt for
experience against Bayer Leverkusen in midweek.

Carson says he isn't sure if his debut will lead to a prolonged run in
the side.

"I didn't know a thing about the fact I was playing until we got into
the changing room just before the game," said Carson.

"The manager announced the team and I was shocked. It was good for me to
get my debut out of the way. I thought it went okay. I didn't have a lot
to do but the most disappointing thing was the result. The goal was a
great strike. I got my fingers to it but just couldn't keep it out.

"Now we've got to pick ourselves up from this for Wednesday against
Bayer Leverkusen."

Carson says he won't presume he'll keep his place in Europe.

"I don't know if this will give me a run in the side or not," he said.
"I've just got to take it a game at a time and continue to work hard in
training."

Liverpool's chances of finishing in the top four get slimmer with every
loss, but the teenager insists there's no defeatism in the Anfield camp.

He said: "We won't give up. The boss has told us we've got to keep
fighting until the end and that's what we'll do. The derby is coming up
in a couple of weeks and hopefully we can get a couple of good results
before then. Then we can force ourselves back up there."

Fernando Morientes missed the weekend fixture with a groin injury, but
he's likely to be fit for the next Premiership game against Blackburn at
Anfield on March 16.
