Same old story as U18s look for win
Academy Football with Chris Wright, Daily Post

IT is, sadly, a familiar story for Liverpool under-18s this weekend as
they go in search of their elusive first victory of 2005.

John Owens's side welcome Crewe Alexandra to the Kirkby Academy tomorrow
having not won the FA Premier Academy League since October 9.

It has been a disappointing campaign for the U18s side with just three
victories and now 14 defeats, following last week's 3-1 home reserve
against Wolves.

Liverpool are still bottom of the Group C table, trailing Bolton by six
points and it is looking increasingly likely they will remain there.

Added to that the Academy side failed to gain a well-needed boost in
midweek when they lost 2-0 to Marine in the semi-final of the Liverpool
Senior Cup on Tuesday.

Liverpool now need hope to bounce back in the League. Owens said: "A few
of the lads are playing in the reserves so fatigue sets in and the games
are coming thick and fast. In a sense that is good when you are winning.
We need to work on things to score more goals.

"We have just go to keep plugging away."

Crewe themselves come to Kirkby having lost 4-1 to leaders Blackburn,
but Owens expects another tough match.

He said: "It is always a good football game with Crewe.

"That is the kind of thing, box-to-box that we are equal to most teams.
It is just turning the chances into goals.

"We are looking for strikers, and will continue to do so. At the club we
can't really promote anyone."
