PA Sport, 13 Nov 2004
Liverpool 3 Crystal Palace 2

Milan Baros won two penalties, bagged a hat-trick and saved Liverpool from
the embarrassment of being held by a defiant but far from classy Crystal
Palace.

The Czech striker, now with 10 goals for the season in 18 matches, is doing
his level best to not only make up for the sale of Michael Owen but also
the season-long loss of Djibril Cisse.

The front man may have his critics for a inability to see colleagues in
better positions, while opponents rage about the speed he hits the deck
under a challenge - not least Palace and their boss Iain Dowie.

But Baros, the leading scorer at Euro 2004, is now showing that level of
form for Liverpool.

He scored early on from the spot, stabbed Liverpool back into the lead on
the stroke of half-time after Joonas Kolkka's equaliser, and then won and
scored another spot-kick in the dying seconds.

That robbed the hard-working, well-organised Palace of a point they thought
they had secured following Michael Hughes' close-range header.

But Liverpool had so much of the ball, so much of the play they deserved
this victory - even if their efforts were being clouded by frustration long
before the end.

Crystal Palace arrived at Anfield without top scorer Andy Johnson, while
Liverpool's top scorer Baros returned from a hamstring injury to make a
telling contribution.

But Palace were certainly not around just to make up the numbers and
although Liverpool started with some neat and clever passing, the south
Londoners set about them with confidence and desire.

Ben Watson and then Kolkka threatened in the opening minutes but Baros
began to unhinge young and inexperienced defenders with pace, movement and
the ability to milk any situation which came his way.

Baros was the victim of three fouls in the opening minutes, two of which
were committed by Aki Riihilahti who should have been booked for one.

However, the treatment Baros got earned Liverpool the breakthrough after 22
minutes when Emmerson Boyce brushed the striker aside.

Referee Phil Dowd pointed instantly to the spot and Baros drilled home the
penalty, although Dowie's complaints from the line about the decision
prompted a swift word from the official before the restart.

Baros continued to cause real problems and some superb control and pace saw
him scamper clear of Palace' defence after 29 minutes only for him to be
sent tumbling in the box by another Boyce challenge.

This time referee Dowd waved play on and then penalised an enraged Baros
for picking the ball up after expecting another penalty.

This appeal was far more convincing than the previous incident but Palace
players were furious with Baros, claiming he dived, and the referee spoke
with the Czech and several defenders to calm the situation.

Dougie Freedman had a thankless task up front for Palace and got nothing
from Dowd when he went down under a challenge from Sami Hyypia.

But the Scot's efforts won a throw near the corner two minutes from
half-time and from the restart Tony Popovic found Kolkka who smashed a
great shot into the far corner form Palace's equaliser.

There was still time for Kolkka to be booked for a foul on Baros, the
Palace man showing his disgust at the decision by throwing himself to the
ground to demonstrate what he thought of Baros' fall.

But Liverpool really punished Palace when Xabi Alonso swung in the
resulting free-kick and Harry Kewell's first-time pass sent the ball across
goal for Baros to scored from two yards.

Palace were quick to attack Liverpool's right flank after the break, where
Josemi was not enjoying a happy afternoon.

They got Kolkka into acres of space behind the Spanish defender only for
the linesman's flag to halt the move but with their next attack Kolkka
created the equaliser after 52 minutes.

The little Finnish star got to the byline and crossed for an unmarked
Hughes to nod home from eight yards.

But despite all the efforts of Alonso with his astute passing, Liverpool
were getting little reward in the box.

That was until the dying seconds when Baros' pace took him past Popovic,
who clearly brought him down.

Referee Dowd spent ages getting Palace players out of the box and ended up
booking Gabor Kiraly for time-wasting, but Baros was nerveless and stepped
up to crack the ball home from the spot for the winner.

BAROS CLINCHER STUNS PALACE
Iain Dowie admitted that Crystal Palace's last-ditch defeat at Liverpool
was "difficult to stomach" after he had seen Milan Baros score a hat-trick
in a 3-2 Anfield triumph that included two penalties won by the Czech striker.

The Palace boss said: "Baros was their most outstanding player and he hurt us.

"I don't want to get embroiled in any debate over whether he goes down too
easily, that is for other people to decide. But it was hard to take - a
bitter pill to swallow.

"They hardly had a shot in the second half and we scored two 'stand out'
goals and frankly conceded three sloppy ones.

"I would contest the free kick (won by Baros) that got them the free kick
which saw them reclaim the lead just before the break, and I would like to
see the penalties on TV.

"What is frustrating is the way they did us at the end. My players are
stunned after that but we must take the positives from games like this.

"Ben Watson and Wayne Routledge were outstanding for us and it is from
games like this that players and teams gain the character, that X-factor,
you need to become top class performers in the Premiership.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez was understandably relieved with the result.

He said: "When you play with the right attitude you can always win, even if
it comes right at the end.

"They played very well, they were well organised and they pressed us
throughout the game. But I felt we controlled the game and kept going right
to the end, and that is what got us the victory.

"I was pleased for Milan. He kept going right to the end. But we need all
our strikers now to help. (Florent) Sinama-Pongolle, (Neil) Mellor and
(Harry) Kewell are all needed, not just Baros."

Liverpool Daily Post, 12 Nov 2004
Funeral date for Hughes announced

THE funeral of Emlyn Hughes is to take place in Sheffield Cathedral at noon
next Wednesday, November, 17.

The Dean of Sheffield, the Very Revd Peter Bradle, will lead the service
and everyone is welcome at what will be a thanksgiving for his life.

It is understood Liverpool chairman David Moores and chief executive Rick
Parry will lead those representing the club, along with many of Hughes'
former Liverpool colleagues.

In place of flowers, mourners are asked being to make a donation to the
Emlyn Hughes Cancer Appeal at Weston Park Hospital. Donations should be
sent to John Heath and Sons, 2-16 Earsham Street, S4 7LS.

The Dean of Sheffield commented, "Our thoughts and prayers are with Emlyn's
wife Barbara, and his two children Emma and Emlyn Junior."

" He was a much-loved figure throughout the country, in particular in the
City of Liverpool.

"After retiring, he came to Sheffield and received the same adoration - for
his boundless enthusiasm and the way he helped the people of South
Yorkshire with his tireless charitable work.

"We are honoured to be holding this service in Sheffield Cathedral," he added.

The service will include Emlyn's favourite hymns and a tribute from a
fellow former Liverpool player.

A book of condolence is available in the cathedral.

Liverpool Daily Post, 12 Nov 2004
Injuries add to frustrating start
Academy football with Chris Wright, Daily Post

INJURIES continue to affect Liverpool under-18s as they return to action
after last weekend's break aiming to build on their encouraging derby draw
against Everton.

John Owens's side face back-to-back home fixtures against Crewe Alexandra
tomorrow (kick-off 11am) and then Manchester United as they aim to
kick-start a so-far frustrating campaign in terms of results. But they will
have to do without two more influential players in Lee Peltier and Francis
Smith.

Defender Peltier has been one of the more consistent performers this
season, both at Academy and reserve level, but is now out for up to three
months with a back injury, while Francis Smith, who has been plagued with
injury problems, needs an operation.

Coach Owens said: "Lee Peltier had a sore back and we had it scanned. He is
likely to be out for three months unfortunately, so he is out of Youth Cup
as well. He would have been one of the mainstays in that.

"Francis Smith, who was out for six weeks with a hairline fracture in his
metatarsal (the same as Steven Gerrard), came back and had a practice
match, and in training he cracked it. It is a proper break and he will need
an operation.

"We are depleted, but we will have 11 players for Crewe, although it is not
as strong as we would have hoped."

Long-term casualty Adam Hitchen is at least back in light training, but
fellow defender Jordan Holmes is still out.

But despite the problems, Owens hopes his side can secure only their fourth
victory tomorrow.

He said: "We have let in too many goals, so we have had to work on our
defensive play. But also we need to put our chances away.

"In the middle of the field we are playing well and producing a good level
of football, but we find it difficult to translate that into taking chances
and that has let us down in a lot of games."

Liverpool Echo, 12 Nov 2004
Reliving the legend
By Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

THERE can't be many footballers who've endeared themselves to their
supporters with a shot which flew yards wide of the goal.

But from the moment Anfield debutant Alan Kennedy unleashed a thunderbolt
of a strike which missed the Kop goal and knocked off a policeman's helmet
he won a place in the hearts of Liverpool fans that he still holds today.

Kennedy signed for Liverpool from Newcastle in the summer of 1978 for
£330,000, a then record fee for a defender, and went on to become a folk hero.

He has now co-written a book about his time at Anfield, Kennedy's Way:
Inside Bob Paisley's Liverpool, which he admits has given him the
opportunity to indulge in a bit of nostalgia.

But this week Alan's thoughts of the past have been filled with his former
teammate and friend Emlyn Hughes who died on Tuesday.

"Emlyn was a great player and quite rightly a legend at Anfield.

"I went to the match on Wednesday and I thought the minute's silence was
wonderful and the fact that Liverpool won was the kind of tribute Emlyn
would have wanted. I also got the chance to speak to Emlyn's family and it
was great to remember the good times."

As a player Alan picked up the gauntlet thrown down by Emlyn as he peppered
his Liverpool career with performances full of determination and no little
skill.

But when Alan first burst into the Liverpool team following in the
footsteps of Emlyn and taking the place of another Kop hero Joey Jones he
found the pressure almost unbearable.

"I came from Newcastle and the way we played up there was all about getting
the ball to the forwards quickly which meant launching it long.

"At Liverpool I started off hitting the ball 60 yards and the other players
would be screaming at me to keep it short because their short passing game
was all about giving the ball no more than four or five yards.

"That was difficult enough, but the fact that I was getting picked ahead of
heroes like Joey Jones and Emlyn made things even harder." For a player who
scored in four cup finals, including two in Europe, and who was quoted as
saying Tommy Smith didn't worry him in the slightest before Newcastle took
on Liverpool in the 1974 FA Cup Final Alan never felt fully confident in
his own ability until long after he hung his boots up.

He says: "I only started to feel comfortable at Anfield around about the
1983/84 season. Before then I always felt my place was under threat despite
the fact that Bob Paisley seemed to favour a back four of Neal, Hansen,
Lawrenson and myself.

"I suppose I was putting myself under pressure, but when you are surrounded
by the likes of Souness, Dalglish and Hansen it is very easy to start
questioning your ability."

Fortunately for Alan, the one person who always had faith in him was
legendary Red's boss Bob Paisley.

At a press conference to mark Alan's arrival at Anfield, Paisley, who was
usually a man of few words startled the assembled press corps by telling
them that if his new signing did not play for England he would throw
himself in the Mersey, "with the tide out".

It was a testament of faith that was both prophetic, Kennedy went on to
play for his country twice, and inspirational.

And it was a show of faith that Alan repaid many times over but most
memorably with his two European Cup winning goals.

The first came against the mighty Real Madrid at the Parc des Princes in
Paris in 1981, with the second being the deciding penalty in a shoot-out
with Roma on their own ground three years later.

Alan says it was moments like these that inspired him to write his book.

"I have talked about my Cup Final goals so many times. But there are
certain things only those close to me have known before, like the fact that
when I took the penalty in Rome the one thing that was going through my
mind was my family.

"Luckily for them I did score, but I was haunted by the fear of missing
until the ball actually hit the back of the net."

Twenty years on from that famous penalty Alan can recall every single
moment as if it were yesterday.

And writing the book along with co-author John Williams allowed him to
relive some of his greatest moments of his life.

The only thing Alan hasn't brought back is the moustache he wore with pride
in his 1980's heyday. He shaved it off after a drunken night out in
Barbados three years ago and it hasn't reappeared since.

But fans of Alan's moustache will not be disappointed, it does feature
prominently in his book.

book shops from Monday priced £15.99.

Liverpool Daily Post, 12 Nov 2004
Partridge in a fair plea to manager Benitez
By David Prior, Daily Post

RICHIE PARTRIDGE hopes his first appearance in four years will persuade
Rafael Benitez to give him a more regular chance at Liverpool - and save
his Anfield career.

The 24-year-old winger was the fifth of six Academy starlets to appear in
the Carling Cup clash against Middlesbrough on Wednesday night, replacing
Florent Sinama-Pongolle in the 69th minute and inspiring the hosts' late
2-0 win.

Amazingly, it was Partridge's first taste of first-team action since the
8-0 Worthington Cup rout at Stoke in November 2000, the Dublin-born former
trainee having seen his nine-year spell with the Merseysiders interrupted
by injury as well as a season-long loan to Coventry two years ago.

Partridge is currently on a one-year deal that expires at the end of this
season, and after his promising display on the right flank against Boro is
keen to convince Rafael Benitez he is worthy of an extension.

"It's been a long time and it's just pleasing to come away with a victory,"
he said.

"I felt good. Coming on in a game like that, which was fast and furious,
was always going to be hard. I was struggling a bit to get my second wind
but as soon as that came I settled down and did all right.

"I was quite pleased to set Neil (Mellor) up with the first goal. I think
that dampened their spirits and kicked us on to win the game."

Partridge suffered a serious cruciate knee ligament injury in a freak
collision with a team-mate in a reserve game a year ago, but after
returning to full fitness the Republic of Ireland under-21 international is
eager to make up for lost time.

He added: "Anfield is a wonderful venue to play at. Playing there on
Wednesday will stand me, and all the other young lads who were involved, in
good stead for the future.

"I have to build on this now. I have a year left on my contract and I know
I have to keep working hard. If I do that, then hopefully I'll get another
chance to prove what I can do."

Partridge and his fellow Academy graduates will at least be hoping to play
in the quarter-final against Tottenham, which was yesterday scheuled for
Wednesday, December 1 at 7.45pm.

Meanwhile, Australia coach Frank Farina has given his backing to Harry
Kewell after naming the underfire winger in his Australia squad for the
forthcoming friendly international against Norway.

Kewell has come in for criticsim for his recent performances, as well as
concerns over his fitness, but his national coach was quick to defend his
star turn.

Farina said: "He's going through a difficult period - I think we all know
that. It is not something I'm concerned about, to be honest. In terms of
the national team, Harry's never let us down."

ACADEMY GRADUATES COME OF AGE
By Mark Platt

On the night six Academy graduates helped steer Liverpool into the last
eight of the Carling Cup it was apt that Steve Heighway's name bellowed
around Anfield.
The familiar chant may have been more in celebration of Heighway's playing
career with the Reds but on the evidence of this impressive victory over
cup holders Middlesbrough the former winger is still playing a key role at
the club.

Along with his dedicated band of staff at the Kirkby-based Academy, he has
helped carefully nurture the talents of Neil Mellor, Stephen Warnock,
Darren Potter, Zak Whitbread, John Welsh and Richie Partridge.

And after watching each of them play a key part in the 2-0 defeat of a
vastly experience 'Boro side he has every right to feel an immense sense of
pride.

Mellor will take the plaudits, and rightly so, for the late brace of goals
that won this tie but all of the youngsters can be well pleased with how
they performed on the big stage.

The Carling Cup is not top of Rafael Benitez's list of priorities and
that's perfectly understandable given that the Reds are still in the
Champions League and handily placed among the chasing pack near the top of
the Premiership.

But try telling that to this enthusiastic bunch of Kop kids who have fully
seized their opportunity to impress the new boss.

At Millwall in the previous round it was Whitbread, Warnock and Potter that
caught the eye. They again excelled against 'Boro. Warnock was his usual
industrious self down the left flank, Potter was neat and tidy in
everything he did, and was instrumental in both goals, while Whitbread's
performance was faultless at the back.

Prolific reserve striker Mellor was disappointed with his display at the
New Den but made sure he got in on the act this time around by doing what
he's been doing ever since he first pulled on a red shirt at 16 years of age.

No player has scored more goals for the club in recent years than Mellor.
His goalscoring achievements at youth and reserve level are phenomenal. Now
he's proved he can do it on the stage that matters most. And no-one will
begrudge him his moment of glory.

Equally deserving of his place in the spotlight is Partridge. The young
Irishman has endured a horrific time with injuries and four years after
making his first team debut, it was great to see him given another chance,
albeit as a substitute.

At 24, he's long been spoken about as a player of potential. The time has
come for him to deliver and he didn't disappoint. He was unlucky to not to
win a penalty and then set up the first goal. Not bad for a 21 minute cameo
appearance.

Another substitute who made a noticeable impact was reserve skipper Welsh.
Again, he's a player for whom the word potential always seems to be
attached to his name. We saw glimpses of his ability a couple of season's
back but he faded from the scene and was in danger of becoming Liverpool's
forgotten man.

He'll be first to admit that he didn't start this campaign in the best of
form but slowly but surely he's getting back to his best and fully deserved
his first opportunity to show Benitez what he's capable of.

The introduction of Welsh and Partridge changed the course of a game that
looked to be heading for extra time and possibly penalties. With the latter
taking his place wide on the right, Potter moved into a more central
position and suddenly the Reds clicked as an attacking unit.

They were superbly aided and abetted by the emerging cult-hero of the Kop,
Igor Biscan. The big Croat is oozing confidence at the moment and it shows.
He dominated the midfield from start to finish and was an inspirational
figure for the youthful zest of the aforementioned six.

As the two late goals flew into the Kop net a euphoric sense of joy swept
around the ground in recognition of Liverpool's progress into the last
eight and to hail an outstanding performance from a virtual second-string side.

Rafa's rookies have helped reignite Liverpudlians' interest in this
competition. In the modern era of multi-million pound deals it's refreshing
to see homegrown heroes emerge.

Liverpool have won the League Cup on seven previous occasions. If this
group of players can go all the way to Cardiff and make it eight on
February 27 it will be the most remarkable triumph of them all.

From what we've seen so far, who'd bet against it?

* Liverpool's Carling Cup quarter-final tie against Tottenham Hotspur at
White Hart Lane will take place on Wednesday, 1st December at 7.45pm.
Ticket allocation and details for the match will be announced shortly.

Liverpool Echo, 11 Nov 2004
Mellor wants a cup Spur
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

CUP hero Neil Mellor today pleaded with manager Rafa Benitez to keep faith
in Liverpool's youngsters for the League Cup quarter-final at Spurs.

The 22-year-old striker feels he's finally shown the Spanish boss his
quality having been frustrated with himself prior to his 83rd minute goal
in last night's 2- 0 win over Middlesbrough.

Mellor admits he feared he'd be substituted early in the second half.

But his never-say-die attitude was rewarded and he repaid the manager's
faith with two clinical goals to dump out the holders.

"Liverpool fans who've seen me in the reserves know what I can do and it
was a nice feeling to take that form into a first team game," said Mellor.

"I had a few opportunities before the goal but I wasn't sure if I was
showing enough. I was worried I was coming off early in the second half,
but the gaffer kept faith in me and I hope I've rewarded him.

"I was looking towards the bench when I saw the subs about to come on and
who knows what might have happened if Sinama hadn't had a knock?

"But as a striker I've always been prepared to keep going, sticking at it
and getting in the right places until the last minute.

"The fact I scored two in the last few minutes proved the point, but I had
some chances in the first half and I thought I could have had a hat-trick.

"After I scored the first goal I just started flying in confidence.

It made a huge difference to me because before then I wasn't sure I was
doing myself justice.

"Scoring goals for the reserves is great, but to do it against a good side
like Middlesbrough, who are a very tough team to beat, feels a lot better.

"They may have played an under-strength side but they had plenty of quality
players out there. It wasn't much different to the one doing so well in the
UEFA Cup.

"I don't know if the gaffer will keep us all in against Spurs. We'll have
to wait and see. It would be great if he did because we've shown over two
cup games we can do it.

"None of the young lads have let themselves down."

Mellor has now given Benitez the dilemma he wanted in the aftermath of
Djibril Cisse's injury. But the youngster knows the next step is to hit the
target in the Premiership, having claimed three cup goals in his Anfield
career.

"It's sad there's a couple of injuries at the club, but I believe
everything happens for a reason and I hope I can follow this up with some
Premiership goals," he added..

"I've had a few chances in Premiership games but my next ambition is to get
my first league goals for the club. If I could do that in front of the Kop,
it would feel even better than this."

Florent Sinama-Pongolle suffered cramp in last night's win. He expects to
be fit for the visit of Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Antonio Nunez has now joined full training at Melwood. Both he and Steven
Gerrard are in line to play for the reserves on Monday.

PA Sport, 10 Nov 2004
Liverpool 2 Middlesbrough 0

Neil Mellor scored twice tonight as Liverpool's rising stars secured a
place in the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup.

The 21-year-old striker made the most of a rare first-team appearance to
notch goals in the 83rd and 89th minutes.

It was just the result Liverpool wanted, and came on a night of high
emotion following the death of former captain Emlyn Hughes.

Coach Rafael Benitez gave some of his promising youngsters a run-out
against the holders and they did him proud.

Mellor, Darren Potter, Zak Whitbread and Stephen Warnock were all included
from the start, while John Welsh and Ritchie Partridge came off the bench.

Liverpool players wore black armbands as a mark of respect to Hughes, who
died yesterday.

And a minute's silence was respectfully observed by both sets of supporters
before the action got underway.

Liverpool made a bright start and Igor Biscan stung the fingers of
goalkeeper Carlo Nash with a shot from distance.

Then Potter found himself in space on the edge of the area only to send his
effort over the top of the bar.

Middlesbrough were again caught on the back foot in the seventh minute when
Biscan picked out Pongolle in a good position.

However he was caught in two minds and delivered a tame cross into the arms
of Nash.

Pongolle then saw his effort parried by Nash in the 19th minute and Warnock
quickly latched on to the rebound.

Warnock delivered the ball back into the area but Mellor headed over from
eight yards.

Middlesbrough were beginning to show and James Morrison delivered a good
ball into the path of Joseph Desire-Job but he was unable to take advantage.

However the visitors were growing in confidence and Frank Queudrue got away
from his marker only to send his header from Morrison's cross over the top.

Job then got away from Whitbread after a momentary lapse by the Liverpool
youngster, but ran out of options.

But this was a worrying spell for Liverpool with Biscan forced to take an
influential role in an inexperienced side.

He tried his luck again after 31 minutes but Nash was equal to his effort
from the edge of the area.

Zenden found the net for Middlesbrough in the 41st minute, yet his effort
was disallowed for offside after he had been released by Mark Viduka.

Middlesbrough began the second half brightly and Downing picked out Job
with a good through-ball after 48 minutes.

He turned quickly inside the area but misdirected his shot off target in a
let-off for Liverpool.

Doriva then moved forward for the visitors and cracked a shot wide in a
good spell of pressure.

Liverpool responded and Biscan released Mellor but he hurried his shot and
sent it over from 18 yards.

Pongolle was left in some discomfort after 65 minutes but resumed after
brief treatment. With Liverpool short of strikers at the moment, coach
Benitez hardly needed another one injured.

Milan Baros and Djibril Cisse were both absent from this match and the team
did look a bit short of firepower.

Pongolle eventually did come off after 69 minutes when he was replaced by
Partridge.

Middlesbrough were also struggling to make the breakthrough despite the
inclusion of Viduka and Zenden.

Zenden, however, almost put them ahead in the 70th minute when his shot
rebounded off Stephane Henchoz.

Downing then delivered the corner and Zenden got clear only to head over
from close range.

Middlesbrough kept up the pressure and Doriva cracked in a 25-yard shot
after 75 minutes which was superbly turned away by Dudek.

Job was then inches away from giving the visitors the lead three minutes
later when his effort beat the Polish goalkeeper only to come back off the
post.

Liverpool rallied and made the breakthrough in the 83rd minute when
Partridge released Mellor in the area.

He showed a cool head in front of the Kop to clip a shot over Carlo Nash
and into the net.

Mellor completed the job a minute from time when he scored from close range
after Potter had won the ball off Zenden.

BENITEZ HAILS YOUNG KOP HEROES

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez saluted his young guns as they secured a
place in the Carling Cup quarter-finals by beating Middlesbrough 2-0.

Two late goals from 22-year-old striker Neil Mellor condemned holders
Middlesbrough to defeat at Anfield.

Mellor had only scored one first team goal for the club before tonight and
that came two years ago in a League Cup semi-final against Sheffield United.

It was just the result Liverpool and their fans wanted coming as it did 24
hours after the death of former captain Emlyn Hughes.

Benitez said: "When you win like this against a good team you must be very
happy.

"It means you are working hard and the young players are working with you.

"Mellor kept trying in the first half to score and it is good when someone
plays like that until the end and gets two goals.

"It is good for his confidence, for the team and it will be good for the
reserves and the academy players.

"They will see they have a chance of playing in the first team if they
train properly."

Mellor was given his chance with both Djibril Cisse and Milan Baros ruled
out through injury.

It looked as though Benitez would lose another striker when Florent
Sinama-Pongolle limped off in the second half.

However Benitez later confirmed that he was suffering only from cramp and
also stated that Baros could be ready for the weekend.

Middlesbrough manager Steve McClaren was disappointed that the team had
lost their grip on the trophy with their first defeat in 10 matches.

He said: "This competition has been very good to us and given us a great
opportunity to compete in Europe which we're enjoying at the moment. I
don't like losing matches and I wanted us to progress.

"But I had to utilise the squad and this was perhaps one game too many. I
was disappointed with our performance in the first half although we
improved later on."

McClaren was adamant that Bolo Zenden had scored in the first half before
Liverpool made the breakthrough.

Instead it was chalked off.

McClaren said: "I thought Zenden was onside and we also hit the post. It
just was one of those nights."

Liverpool 2-0 Middlesbrough

From the BBC
Liverpool 2-0 Middlesbrough
A minute's silence in memory of Emlyn Hughes was impeccably observed
Liverpool striker Neil Mellor grabbed a brace to knock holders Middlesbrough out of the Carling Cup.

Mellor got his first during an end-to-end climax to the game with substitute Richie Partridge providing the cross.

Middlesbrough will feel aggrieved by the defeat as Boudewijn Zenden had a goal disallowed for offside while Joseph Desire Job also hit a post.

But Mellor made sure of the Liverpool win when he diverted in a Darren Potter ball into the Boro box.

There was an impeccably observed minute's silence before the game to honour former Anfield great Emlyn Hughes who died on Tuesday.

And Reds midfielder Igor Biscan continued his rich vein of recent form as he impressed and he saw an early 25-yard shot saved.

Liverpool looked the more threatening and striker Florent Sinama-Pongolle saw a close range angled shot parried by keeper Nash.

Mellor (left) scored two late goals for Liverpool

Stephen Warnock gathered the loose ball and crossed for Mellor only for the forward to head disappointingly over from six yards.

The game became a rather subdued affair, although Middlesbrough will feel they should have gone into the interval ahead.

Zenden put the ball in the net but his effort was ruled out for offside.

The home goal again came under threat and keeper Jerzy Dudek was forced into vital saves to keep out shots from Job and Viduka.

Nash was also proving tough to beat in the Middlesbrough goal and he did well to keep out a Warnock shot.

Job hit the post for Boro but Mellor gave Liverpool the lead after 83 minutes and confirmed his side's victory when he also struck as the visitors poured forward in search of an equaliser.

Liverpool Echo, 9 Nov 2004
Young guns are primed for Reds
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

RAFA BENITEZ has vowed to keep faith with his young guns in tomorrow's
Carling Cup showdown with Middlesbrough.

Benitez confirmed he will be resting Xabi Alonso, Didi Hamann and Luis
Garcia in the fourth round tie at Anfield.

Neil Mellor, Zak Whitbread, Darren Potter and Stephen Warnock will get the
chance to repeat their efforts from the last round.

"I will use all the youngsters. I have the same idea as against Millwall,"
said Benitez. "Igor Biscan and Salif Diao will play.

Xabi and others will rest.

"We have to think of all the competitions and it would be impossible to do
well in them all with the same players every game.

"I think the fans would agree with me that in terms of importance, it's the
Premiership, then Champions League, then the FA Cup and then the Carling Cup.

"We want to win all the tournaments, but there are priori-ties. I won't
take risks in the Carling Cup, especially now we have lost (Milan) Baros,
although I think he'll be back next week."

Benitez remains upbeat, despite the weekend loss to Birmingham.

"I understand why the supporters are disappointed with Saturday because we
were growing each week as a team," he admitted..

"I don't know if the problem was with our strikers, because Birmingham were
aggressive in their defence or we weren't fresh enough.

"It was certainly more difficult, but we still had four great
opportunities. Sometimes you need to win even when you don't play well.

"We've lost the chance to use our game in hand to make progress but I'm
sure our level will continue to improve."

Liverpool Echo, 9 Nov 2004
How the Crazy Horse won a place in history
Chris Bascombe looks back at the life of LFC legend Emlyn Hughes, who has
lost his long battle against cancer

YOU know who I've got in the back of this car, son? The future Liverpool
and England captain.'

Bill Shankly's now infamous quip to a policeman in 1967, hours after
signing 19-year-old Emlyn Hughes, could have been another example of his
comic exaggeration.

Instead, it proved to be the legendary Scot's most accurate prophecy.

From the moment he saw Hughes, Shankly knew he'd bought a Kop idol. The
Scot's excitement was matched by the fans when Hughes made his Liverpool
debut against Stoke on March 4 1967.

No player could have embodied Shankly's footballing philosophy more than
the enthusiastic Lancastrian, signed from Blackpool for a paltry £65,000.

Yet it's not beyond the realms of possibility Hughes could have ended up
skippering Wales, not at football, but Rugby League.

Emlyn's father, Fred, made his name as a master of the oval ball and only
left the valleys towards the end of his career.

He moved his family to Barrow-in-Furness where Emlyn was born on August 28
1947.

From an early age, it became obvious it was football, not rugby, which
would be Emlyn's passion.

He signed apprentice terms for Blackpool as a schoolboy and played just a
handful of first team games when Shankly made his first bid, which was
rejected. Shankly refused to give up and eventually got his man.

Whatever Hughes' reputation since he left Anfield - and it's fair to say he
developed a love him or loathe image in latter years - Emlyn the player
never let the club down.

Four league titles, two European Cups, an FA Cup and two UEFA Cups made him
one of the most decorated players in English history.

He completed the set of domestic honours by winning the League Cup with
Wolves in 1980, an honour which eluded him at Anfield.

Perhaps the biggest tribute to his ability came when he was named the
Football Writers player of the year in 1977, when Liverpool only missed out
on the treble by losing the FA Cup final.

Think of the greats in that first European Cup winning side. Kevin Keegan,
Tommy Smith, Ian Callaghan and Ray Clemence. Hughes was an inspiration.

His ecstasy, so visible in that broad smile as he lifted the giant trophy
in Rome in 1977, perfectly embodied the feelings of thousands of Kopites.

In an age when stars are criticised for not giving 100%, this was one flaw
Hughes never possessed during his 665 games for Liverpool.

His nickname 'Crazy Horse' aptly described his style.

"You ain't seen nothin' like the Mighty Emlyn," The Kop would sing.

Shankly had to tell his rookie defender to calm down, fearing he'd burn too
much energy in his relentless pursuit of the ball.

Finding the right role for this jack-in-the-box was Shankly's first task.
Left back and midfield were his favoured positions in the early years. He
could play anywhere, in many respects one of those rare 'complete'
footballers..

Eventually, he settled down as an elegant centre-half. The era of Alan
Hansen and Mark Lawrenson is often considered as the beginning of Anfield's
cultured play from the back.

Hughes and Phil Thompson could argue otherwise as they showed defenders
could pass as much as tackle.

Hughes was an extraordinarily successful skipper, scoring 48 goals during
his time on Merseyside and winning 59 England caps while at Anfield, a
Liverpool record matched only recently by Michael Owen.

He won 62 caps in all and was awarded an OBE in 1980.

Soon after he left Liverpool in 1979, Hughes' achievements on the field
started to become overshadowed by public spats with his former team mates.

Tommy Smith and Hughes never got on when they were at the club, and the war
of words continued for two decades.

Hughes notoriously sang an anti-Everton song during Liverpool's European
Cup celebrations in 1977, something which embarrassed team mates.

And after he'd left Anfield, a newspaper column in which he was quoted
saying Brian Clough was a better manager than Bob Paisley further inflamed
tensions between Hughes and those who once loved him on The Kop.

Perhaps Emlyn was misquoted or misinterpreted. Maybe he was misguided. But
at public functions his ferocious passion quickly won back the respect of
the Liverpool fans who'd been annoyed at some of his less favourable remarks.

After leaving Anfield for Molineux, a stint as player-manager at Rotherham
never worked out, but he settled in Yorkshire after he quit football.

Later generations knew Hughes more as an outspoken pundit and regular
captain on the BBC's 'Question of Sport'.

Sadly, he wasn't such a regular visitor to Anfield in latter years, even
though his contribution to the Liverpool success story stands alongside any
legendary figure.

Perhaps Emlyn was too outspoken for his own good, but as he said at last
year's ECHO tribute dinner in honour of the 1977 European Cup winners, he
would never stop loving Liverpool.

That's why, even though he was seriously ill, he was determined to join
celebrations.

Great Liverpudlians are judged on their actions rather than words, and
Emlyn's performances will never be forgotten by those who witnessed them.

As the man who lifted the European Cup for Liverpool for the first time,
his place within Anfield's Hall of Fame is well preserved.

Just as Shankly had predicted.

Liverpool Echo, 9 Nov 2004
Emlyn loses cancer fight
By Jon Tunney, Liverpool Echo

TRIBUTES were today being paid to Liverpool legend Emlyn Hughes, who lost
his fight with cancer this morning.

The 57-year-old, who died at his Sheffield home with his family at his
bedside, had fought a 15-month battle with the cancerous brain tumour he
once described as a "nasty little bugger".

Today his wife Barbara said his condition had deteriorated in the last few
days.

"He died at his home in Sheffield with his family around him," she added.

Despite his increasingly poor health he continued in public life until last
month when he made his last appearance, at a dinner in his honour.

Today family friend David Hayes told the ECHO: "Although Emlyn was
obviously very unwell his spirit was never broken."

Mr Hayes organised last month's tribute evening for the Emlyn Hughes Cancer
Appeal in Sheffield.

"He was determined to make it to the charity evening," he said. His wife
Barbara pushed him in his wheelchair while a slideshow of his career was
being shown.

"First of all he was going to be staying for 20 minutes, then it was half
an hour. Finally he ended up staying the whole night because he was so
determined to help.

"We raised more than £20,000 that night and Emlyn was a big part of it.

"He was well-known and well-loved in Dore village - nothing was too much
trouble for him.

"Whenever there was a store to be opened, a village society event, a cubs
or a scouts do, Emlyn would be there. He will be sadly missed by everyone
in Dore."

Rick Parry, chief executive of Liverpool Football Club, said: "Our deepest
sympathies go out to wife Barbara, children Emma and Emlyn junior, and the
rest of the family at this sad time."

A club spokesman said: "Those lucky enough to see him play will recall his
boundless enthusiasm, 100% commitment to the cause and unrelenting passion
for the club whenever he had the Liver Bird close to his chest."

The club confirmed it will hold a one-minute silence before tomorrow
night's Carling Cup tie against Middlesbrough at Anfield.

Liverpool fans were also paying tribute to the man they nicknamed Crazy Horse.

Glen Williams, from Crosby, said: "He should be given the credit he is very
rarely accorded - his medals go before him.

"He was a tremendous player and a pretty nice fellow.

"He was a very good player in a great team. An important part of the jigsaw
and he led by example.

"I'm sure all Liverpool fans will wish his family well."

Liverpool Echo, 8 Nov 2004
Kewell's trickery fast disappearing
Analysis by David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

IN times of crisis, strong men are called for. Men of guts, desire and
fortitude, men who will rail against the odds, dig in willingly - men who
are desperate to turn misfortune for others into an opportunity for themselves.

On Saturday Liverpool's attacking injury list could have accurately been
described as a crisis.

But the men called for were Harry Kewell and Florent Sinama-Pongolle.

One is a young, match-rusty French kid, so allowances should be made for
Flo-Po. Harry Kewell, however, is fast running out of excuses.

An experienced international reaching what should be his peak years, he
started the first seven matches of this season and on Saturday was handed
what he believes to be his best role.

Less than five minutes had gone when a sparkling drive drew a rendition
from the Kop of a song they might have been forgiven for forgetting the
words to.

It was the only time we'd hear the words "Harry Kewell, Harry Kewell," all
afternoon.

His frequent disappearing tricks have now become the norm. They are all the
more frustrating when you examine the assets at his disposal. A decent turn
of pace, a sublime touch, the ability to weave effort-lessly past defenders
and a shot that bears comparison with Henry.

But when was the last time you saw Kewell beat a man? Or more pertinently,
even try to?

He appears to be existing in a comfort zone, unwilling to take the
difficult option when an easier one presents itself.

Contrast the Harry Kewell you are seeing now - with the one who arrived at
Anfield with a flurry of breathtaking goals. They look like two different men.

Neil Mellor, Liverpool's last remaining striking option, would kill for
some of the qualities Kewell has at his disposal, but at the moment his
willing, more physical approach might offer a better option for the long,
long weeks before the transfer window opens.

The months of November and December are littered with tough tests and
banana skins - the visit of a Middlesbrough team which takes the Carling
Cup seriously and reborn Crystal Palace next-up.

And Liverpool will need players who fancy it when they come to town.

In football especially, you learn more about someone in defeat than you do
in victory.

Which is why Rafael Benitez cut such an impressive figure after
Birmingham's smash and grab raid. His attacking options have been decimated
to the extent that they are barely non-existent. He was offered that route
as an excuse in his post-match press conference, but refused to take it.

"I am not sure, because we have had clear opportunities. We have two months
with the same players and we need to work hard to prepare the team as best
we can," he declared.

Liverpool should have been awarded a blatant penalty. "The players said to
me there was a hand-ball, but if the referee doesn't see it you can't do
anything," he shrugged.

He comes across as a man trying hard to make the best of a desperately bad
hand he has been dealt.

Now he needs a few more players who will react exactly the same way.

Over to you, Harry.

Nunez eager to prove the real deal
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL'S Antonio Nunez today spoke of his relief that his Anfield injury
nightmare is finally coming to an end.

The Spanish winger expects to be available in a fortnight after a sickening
start to his career on Merseyside.

He's still waiting for a debut after being injured hours after his signing
from Real Madrid.

Rafa Benitez will soon be able to call on both Nunez and Steven Gerrard as
his side tries to pick up the pieces of their first home defeat in the
Premiership to Birmingham on Saturday.

"I'm feeling a lot better and think I'll be playing in two or three weeks,"
said Nunez.

"To get injured in what was actually my second training session was bad
luck. It was like a nightmare.

"I just made one movement and in the end I had to have a medial ligament
operation.

It's been very difficult for me. The knee injury has kept me out for so
long, but the important thing now is I should be playing again quickly.

"I just want to show the Liverpool fans what I can do and at least I'm
going to be able to do that very soon.

"It was helpful to me to have some Spanish mates here at the club. To have
suffered that kind of bad luck after just arriving in a new country would
have been very difficult.

"It could have been a lonely time for me, but everyone was very supportive.
Even though I haven't played, I already feel part of the club.

"I feel very comfortable in England. I like the culture of this country."

With Gerrard optimistically targeting Liverpool's trip to Middlesbrough on
November 20, Nunez should make his bow soon after. A reserve game at Leeds
on November 22 could be a potential return date.

"I haven't thought of a game yet. At the moment I'm still training with
Stevie Gerrard and haven't joined with the rest of the lads, " added Nunez,
cautiously.

"I think either this week or next we'll join in training with the others.
We will see how the knee responds to the step up in training before we know
when I can start a match. If the reaction is good, I hope I will be playing
soon."

Manager Benitez will give youth another chance in Wednesday's Carling Cup.

Darren Potter and Stephen Warnock will be recalled, while cult hero Igor
Biscan is sure to be given another burst in midfield.

Milan Baros is expected to be fit for next week-end's visit of Crystal Palace.

* Liverpool currently have tickets for Wednesday's visit of Middlesbrough
on general sale, prices as follows: Adults, whole stadium £17; Kop
Grandstand and Upper Anfield Road (one adult/one child combined) £25;
Over-65s £12.50.

PA Sport, 6 Nov 2004
Liverpool 0 Birmingham 1

Eleven months of heartache for Birmingham finally came to an end as
Liverpool surrendered their 100% Anfield record in the Premiership to a
team whose last away victory in the league was in December.

Birmingham boss Steve Bruce's side had lost 10 and drawn six of their
previous 16 away-day outings, yet they emerged with a win courtesy of
Darren Anderton's first Blues goal following his move from Tottenham.

The simple 77th-minute strike from just a yard out also ended a City goal
drought that had lasted 380 minutes as Liverpool looked a pale shadow of
the team that had scored a famous Champions League victory over Deportivo
La Coruna in midweek.

When you have set yourself such impeccably high standards at home, as
Liverpool have so far this season, you come to expect the best on every
successive occasion.

But this 90 minutes was arguably the worst this campaign for the Reds, not
simply because they failed to score, but the performance was patchy and
lacked any cohesion.

Liverpool should have taken full advantage of a City side low on confidence
and added to Bruce's woes, but they were not without their own problems,
notably in attack as Milan Baros joined Djibril Cisse on the injury list.

With Cisse out for the season with a broken leg, the last thing manager
Rafael Benitez needed was to have Baros also on the sidelines, the Czech
international ruled out with a hamstring problem.

Benitez was forced to play Harry Kewell on his own up front, with Florent
Sinama-Pongolle providing support on his first Premiership start this season.

When you are also lacking the drive and ingenuity of Steven Gerrard from
midfield - he is due to return in a fortnight - then problems are bound to
occur.

Liverpool, though, still had the chances in the opening period to have
piled on the agony for Birmingham, but Maik Taylor and their own inept
finishing proved their downfall.

Taylor initially came to the fore in the fifth minute, the Northern Ireland
goalkeeper at full stretch in palming out of the swirling rain a rising
drive following a fast break from the home team.

That came after John Arne Riise had headed wide a deep right-wing cross
from Josemi and prior to another fine save, this time clutching off the
greasy surface a low Xabi Alonso drive.

Then came the one and only opportunity for a returning Emile Heskey, back
on his old stamping ground for the first time since his £6.25million summer
move to City.

Damien Johnson and a fit-again Muzzy Izzet, back in the side after five
weeks out with a knee injury, were the suppliers, but the latter's cross
into the near post was stabbed wide and into the Kop.

After Cunningham had blocked a Sinama-Pongolle drive, Liverpool looked in
danger of conceding when Julian Gray sprung Liverpool's offside trap with a
measured through ball for Izzet.

But the ball skidded up off the turf and Izzet went on to collide with
Chris Kirkland, coming off worse as he required treatment before continuing.

Then came the chances that should have set Liverpool apart from the
visitors, only for Luis Garcia to endure the groans of the home faithful.

His first, in fairness, prompted another excellent stop from Taylor as he
held onto a fierce angled drive, but he should have done so much better
with the second on the half-hour.

With only Taylor to beat after a loose ball on the edge of the area had
ricocheted into his path, Garcia proceeded to blaze over from 12 yards.

Following a scrappy, untidy end to the first half, it was Garcia who was
then supplier 10 minutes after the restart just at a time when frustration
was growing in the home camp.

Garcia delivered an exquisite ball with the outside of his right foot into
the path of Dietmar Hamann to leave the German clean through, and although
Cunningham was bearing down, his eventual flick was too close to Taylor who
made a clean save.

With urgency growing in the Liverpool ranks, Kewell then headed over before
contention arose in the 71st minute.

In a matter of seconds Izzet made goal-line clearances from Jamie Carragher
and Garcia.

Within six minutes, it was City who then made the stunning breakthrough and
against the run of play, instigated by a short corner between Izzet and
Robbie Savage.

Matthew Upson proceeded to meet Savage's far-post cross with a downward
header into the six-yard box, and after a slight deflection on the way,
substitute Anderton - a 63rd-minute replacement for Stephen Clemence -
tapped simply home from a yard for what proved to be an unlikely winner.

BRUCE SAVOURS ANFIELD TRIUMPH

Relieved Birmingham boss Steve Bruce was finally savouring the sweet taste
of an away victory in the Premiership on Saturday night.

After 11 months and 16 matches, City finally conjured up three points on
their travels.

The Reds had this season previously won all four of their home league
matches, but they saw that run ended as Darren Anderton scored his first
goal for a year.

Liverpool, already without broken-leg victim Djibril Cisse, also had
seven-goal leading scorer Milan Baros on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

Without his two first-choice strikers, manager Rafael Benitez was forced to
turn to Harry Kewell up front and Liverpool suffered as a consequence.

The Reds still had enough chances to win the game, in particular in the
second half when they were unlucky to see Muzzy Izzet clear two shots off
the line in quick succession.

After first hacking clear from Jamie Carragher, Izzet then appeared to use
his hand to stop a shot from Luis Garcia, but there was no penalty.

Within six minutes City grabbed the winner when Anderton, a 63rd-minute
substitute for Stephen Clemence, slipped the ball home from a yard.

Bruce was understandably delighted at finally grabbing an away-day win and
said: "I am very proud of my players.

"We have had a tough time of late, a really tough time. But you can see
that even a club of Liverpool's size and stature, when they are without
their two centre-forwards, struggle.

"We have been like that the past seven or eight weeks and for me at this
level you are only as good as your strikers.

"But all credit to my players because they have stuck at it. We have
deserved a little bit of luck because it has been so difficult over the
past few weeks.

"I hope this result now gives the lads a lift. We have drawn six games this
season and if we had won two or three of those then we would be where we
want to be.

"But I am now confident that we will now improve."

Bruce also expressed his delight for scorer Anderton.

"He has had a tough time over the past 12 to 18 months.

"I am delighted for him because he has come here on a pay-as-you-play
contract, worked extremely hard and just got on with it. Tonight is a great
night for him."

Bruce then spoke of the luck he felt went his side's way with the Izzet
incident.

"As far as I'm concerned the ball has hit him on the elbow. It would have
been harsh because the workrate and application of the players was
excellent, but today it went for us."

Benitez, meanwhile, refused to blame the loss on the fact he was without
Cisse and Baros, although he acknowledged it was an under-par performance.

"We still had clear opportunities to score, but it's just about luck," said
Benitez.

"We've now got two months with the same players and we need to work hard
and prepare the team as best we can.

"But I am not thinking about the transfer window. I am only thinking how to
prepare for the next game.

"This result was frustrating for me, the players and the supporters because
although we had the chances, we didn't score and they scored from a small
mistake from us."
