PA Sport, 16 April 2005
Liverpool 2 Tottenham 2

Liverpool look like they are going to have to win the Champions League
at this rate to get back into the competition next season.

Semi-finalists and awaiting Chelsea in their European adventure, they
just could not overcome a spirited Tottenham who led twice.

And, with Bolton winning at Charlton, the Anfield men have now slipped
to sixth place.

Erik Edman and Robbie Keane twice had Liverpool ahead, with Luis Garcia
and Sami Hyypia grabbing vital equalisers.

But it will be the missed penalty from Steven Gerrard that could come
back to haunt Liverpool now.

Gerrard returned to captain Liverpool, while boss Rafael Benitez opted
to leave out some of the heroes of Turin with trips to Portsmouth and
then Crystal Palace next week in mind.

John Arne Riise, Djimi Traore and Igor Biscan were rested to the bench
with Mauricio Pellegrino, Fernando Morientes and Stephen Warnock coming
into the side.

Benitez opted for a completely different system to the one he employed
against Juventus, playing three central defenders with Steve Finnan and
Warnock asked to push forward down the flanks.

It was a plan that failed to work with Spurs out-numbering Liverpool in
the centre and making life very uncomfortable for the Reds.

Liverpool started slowly, but Spurs had no intention of being low key,
and were ahead on 12 minutes when a sensational goal from Edman stunned
the Kop.

There was no obvious danger when the Swede collected the ball 35 yards
out. But barely a player moved to confront him and Edman unleashed a
fierce drive that dipped at the last minute to deceive Jerzy Dudek and
crash into the top corner of the net.

Liverpool were unsettled by the constant movement of Keane from flank to
flank and Fredi Kanoute's pace and control. And there was a limited
response from Liverpool to the shock of Spurs' goal.

Antonio Nunez created a chance for Luis Garcia, but the problems of
understanding at the back and in midfield were soon addressed by Benitez
who made a tactical change on 35 minutes by putting on Riise for Warnock.

Riise fitted in on the left of midfield, which provided more experience
and greater attacking options.

But Liverpool were caught in possession too often by the hounding of
Andy Reid, Michael Carrick and Sean Davis.

It needed something special to restore parity before the break, and if
if Edman's strike had been great, Luis Garcia popped up with one almost
as good for the equaliser on 44 minutes. Alonso's pass out to Finnan was
instantly played to the feet of the little Spaniard. He took one touch
and spun away from Edman to fire a superb dipping volley from 25 yards
into the top left hand corner.

And Liverpool could have been ahead at half time had it not been for a
superb save from Paul Robinson to turn away a Morientes diving header
seconds after the equaliser.

Spurs hit back with a close range shot from Keane deflected wide and a
Kanoute header from Reid's corner that also missed the target.

Liverpool had Pellegrino now playing more as a left back, and when
Kanoute got round him on 56 minutes, Spurs were ahead again. The
striker's cross arrowed into the box and Keane easily headed past Dudek.

And as if fate was conspiring against Liverpool, they missed a penalty a
minute after going behind. Luis Garcia played a one-two with Gerrard in
the box and Kelly and Davis combined to trip the home skipper, who got
off the floor to blast the spot kick into the Kop.

It took an unlikely source to get Liverpool level again on 63 minutes.
Gerrard's corner was only half cleared to the edge of the box, and
Hyypia chased it out and turned to fire from 18 yards past Robinson's
left hand.

Luis Garcia's spin and left footed shot dipped over the bar and then
Nunez and Gerrard combined to play Finnan clear in the box on the right,
the Irishman's shot flashing inches wide of the far post.

And Liverpool's desperate need for all three points saw them pushing men
forward, leaving themselves wide open to the counter, something Spurs
frequently looked like achieving.

Alonso was feeling the pace by now and was replaced by Biscan, but still
the danger was there for Liverpool and Davies saw a dipping 20 yarder
tipped over by Dudek.

Luis Garcia fired over from a Riise pass before Gerrard hit the post
from 15 yards before Morientes hooked over from the six yard line as
Liverpool piled on the pressure, but they were unable to force the win
they so desperately needed.

GERRARD FIT TO FACE SPURS

Rafael Benitez confirmed that Steven Gerrard is fit to lead the
Liverpool side in their Premiership home clash with Tottenham.

The influential Reds skipper missed the heroic midweek draw in Turin
with a groin injury picked up in last weekend's defeat at Manchester City.

But after receiving treatment at Melwood this week Gerrard is now ready
for a return to action.

Benitez said: "Steven is better and maybe he will play," Rafa told the
press this morning. "Obviously this is good news for us. It is important
for us to have more possibilities now."

"He was delighted for all of us and has trained okay since we returned."

Xabi Alonso and Djibril Cisse - who both returned in Turin after
long-term injuries - are also available.

Fernando Morientes and Mauricio Pellegrino were cup-tied against Juve
and return to the squad. Dietmar Hamman, Josemi, Chris Kirkland, Harry
Kewell and Florent Sinama-Pongolle are all still out injured.

Tottenham's leading goalscorer Jermain Defoe and centre-back Anthony
Gardner both remain doubtful.

Defoe did not train on Thursday after being struck down by illness and a
sore throat while Gardner has hardly trained for a fortnight as he
continues to be troubled by a foot injury.

Tottenham head coach Martin Jol was waiting to assess them both in
training on Friday before making a decision on whether to include them
in the squad.

With Defoe doubtful and Mido out for two weeks with a stomach strain,
Robbie Keane seems set to start up front alongside Fredi Kanoute.

Michael Brown is out for a fortnight after suffering a small fracture to
the top of his foot in last week's win over Newcastle while Thimothee
Atouba is suspended.

Noe Pamarot (knee), Pedro Mendes (toe) and Noureddine Naybet (hamstring)
are all long-term casualties and will not travel, but Goran Bunjevcevic
and Michael Dawson are both in line for a call.

[lfc-news] Cisse can't wait to help Reds get their Chelsea revenge - Echo

Liverpool Echo, 15 April 2005
Cisse can't wait to help Reds get their Chelsea revenge
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

DJIBRIL CISSE today vowed to erase the pain of missing the League Cup
Final defeat to Chelsea by playing his part in a famous Champions League
victory over the Londoners.

The French striker completed his dramatic recovery from a broken leg by
appearing as a late sub in Wednesday's draw in Turin.

Having endured the loss in Cardiff as a frustrated spectator, Cisse
can't wait to get into the thick of the action when the teams next meet
on an even bigger stage.

"It's going to be hard against Chelsea, but having lost to them three
times, now we really want to beat them," said Cisse.

"The game will mean even more to me because I had to miss the cup final.

I'm really looking forward to both games. People will make Chelsea
favourites, but that's better for us.

"There's no reason we can't win the competition now. I think other teams
will be taking notice of Liverpool after our result against Juventus.

"I'm really pleased for all my team-mates because they've taken us so
far in the competition.

They've done a great job in the competition."

Cisse could make his Anfield comeback against Spurs, although he's
likely to be named as substitute again.

The forward says he can't believe how soon he's recovered from an injury
which was expected to keep him out until the start of next season.

"I was really surprised to be back, but very happy. I don't know what
more I can say than this," he said.

"I even had a chance at the end of the Juventus game. In a few months,
maybe I would be a bit quicker and take that opportunity. I knew a day
before we travelled I'd be involved in the game.

"Now I can't believe it.

I've never pushed the boss to pick me quicker than he wanted. Everything
has happened under the guidance of the medical staff and that's why I'm
back now.

"Now I have a few games before the end of the season and I hope to play
as many games as possible."

[lfc-news] Liverpool could be fined by UEFA - Post

Liverpool Daily Post, 15 April 2005
Liverpool could be fined by UEFA
By Andy Hunter, Daily Post

LIVERPOOL could be hit with a UEFA fine after their supporters
retaliated to a missile bombardment at the Stadio Delle Alpi.

Liverpool fans were subjected to a sustained assault during Wednesday's
Champions League quarter-final as Juventus supporters hurled bottles,
coins, flares and plastic seats at the away section.

Juventus are expected to be punished by Uefa after a week of shame for
Italian football.

But the Anfield club may also be penalised after some of their fans
hurled the missiles back.

Last night a UEFA spokesman revealed: "We are still waiting for the
official report from the security officer that we had at the game.

"So far we haven't opened any disciplinary procedures but usually a club
would be fined if their supporters were throwing missiles in a stadium.

"If it is the first time it has happened to this club then maybe it
would only be a warning but it usually depends on how many missiles were
thrown."

Liverpool were fined £2,000 in February 2001 after a minor crowd
disturbance against Roma.

[lfc-news] Chelsea not favourites to progress, says Alonso - Post

Liverpool Daily Post, 15 April 2005
Chelsea not favourites to progress, says Alonso
By Andy Hunter, Daily Post

XABI ALONSO insists Liverpool must treat their final six Premiership
games like Champions League finals as he dismissed Chelsea's billing as
favourites for their semi-final showdown.

The Spanish international produced an outstanding comeback against
Juventus to help Liverpool secure their first European Cup semi-final
spot for 20 years.

Despite three defeats to Jose Mourinho's champions-elect this season
Alonso believes Liverpool have no reason to fear Chelsea on April 27 and
May 3.

But he admits Rafael Benitez's side cannot lose sight of their
Premiership objective amid the euphoria of Turin and has challenged
Liverpool to finally sustain their European form at home.

"I believe that we can still finish fourth in the Premiership, but we
have to face each game as if we were playing in a final," said the £10.7
million playmaker. "We have to win them all, and we can do that."

Alonso added: "In Italy, we showed that we are capable of anything in
Europe because against Juventus we were superior in both games.

"A semi-final against Chelsea is enormously attractive. We know
ourselves very well and the time has come for us to take revenge for the
defeats this season. For me, they aren't such favourites as everybody says.

"The good thing is that we know Chelsea and that we know that we can
beat them.

"It is a big match but I am living a dream because the Champions League
is the best competition in the world. I'm very happy we're in the semis,
but now I want more. I want the final."

Alonso defied original plans to only play 45 minutes in Turin and
delivered an accomplished 90-minute display to help subdue Juventus.

"I am very happy to have recovered from my injury and to have helped the
team to get to the semi-finals of the Champions League," he said.

"For me, returning to the field this season is a personal success
because the doctors' calculations weren't very optimistic. I worked hard
in the gym and now I want to enjoy playing.

"It was great to come back, and it was a wonderful evening for the club.
I would never have expected to come back in a game like this.

"It's a great feeling at the moment because to knock out Juve is a first
for all of us. I have never seen so many injuries in one team and at key
moments but we came through.

"Luckily, we've shown that we have excellent players and that the fans
can feel proud of us."

Alonso's team-mate and compatriot Luis Garcia echoed the belief that
Liverpool can end their losing sequence against the Stamford Bridge club.

Garcia said: "It will be a complicated tie but we've already played
three times against them and every time we have played them we have
played well, let's hope that fortune will be on our side.

"To reach the Champions League semi-final and to be so close to the
final is a dream come true. I couldn't have asked for a better result in
my first season with Liverpool.

"We've worked hard and we proved to everybody that we deserved to be in
the final four."

Gerrard can stay and win trophies with us - Benitez
By David Prentice & Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

RAFA BENITEZ has urged Steven Gerrard to abandon any ideas of leaving
Liverpool - and help lead the Reds into a new trophy-winning era.

The Anfield club reached the semi-finals of the Champions League this
week, without their skipper who was sat at home nursing a groin injury.

But with Liverpool now facing Chelsea in the last four - the team
Gerrard publicly turned his back on last summer - the issue of the
skipper's long term future is the subject of speculation once again.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez said today: "Steven Gerrard wants to win trophies
and me too, I want to win trophies. I am not here to learn English. I am
here to win trophies.

"He says the club and the team must improve, and we are improving. I
think he wants to improve with us.

"I know we have a good team and we can play even better and win more games.

"I am always thinking about the next game, but also about the big
picture and I want to progress."

Benitez revealed that Gerrard is fit to face Tottenham at Anfield
tomorrow, and that Xabi Alonso was also fit enough to join him after his
first appearance for three-and-a-half months in Turin.

The Reds boss also dismissed the way chief executive Rick Parry's words
had been misinterpreted in some morning newspapers today.

After saying: "Liverpool is much bigger than one player. Steven wasn't
with us and we proved that we can cope" some headlines claimed "We don't
need you Gerro!"

But Benitez declared: "I was surprised to read something about Steven
Gerrard. I think Rick Parry tried to say that we have a good squad with
a lot of good players - including Steven Gerrard, who is a fantastic player.

"The idea was to show people we have a good team with Steven Gerrard,
but that we can win without him."

The Guardian, 14 April 2005
Fights, flares and little forgiveness
Dominic Fifield at the Stadio delle Alpi

A banner was unfurled on the curva sud an hour before kick-off here
reminding, poignantly: "Easy to speak . . . difficult to pardon."
Painful memories of the Heysel Stadium disaster hung heavy in this arena
last night, with the local mood summed up neatly in those simple white
letters on a red background. For many in Turin, it has not been possible
to forget.

This was the first competitive meeting between these sides in this city
since 39 Juventus supporters lost their lives when a wall collapsed
after a charge by Liverpool fans before the 1985 European Cup final.
Attempts to cultivate "amicizia" (friendship) in the first leg at
Anfield last week had been greeted with derision by some Juve fans,
their ultras turning their backs on the ceremony aimed at
reconciliation. For a while here last night, 20 years of simmering
enmity threatened to boil over into violence.

There were ugly scenes both inside and outside the ground, with flares
fired into the celebrating visiting supporters at the end as the reality
of Liverpool's unlikely progress sank in. That maintained the snarling
mood of the night and visiting fans were kept in the ground long after
the final whistle.

Before kick-off a group of about 50 Juventus fans wielding batons
clashed with riot police outside the stadium. The carabinieri, pelted
with bottles and flares, took over 30 minutes to disperse the
troublemakers - part of a larger group of about 150 locals - using tear
gas. Two vehicles were left in flames. The offenders, wearing scarves
over their faces to avoid identification, broke up into smaller groups
as two police helicopters surveyed the scene.

Yet, though disturbances had been grimly anticipated outside the ground,
events inside were shameful. A pitiful number of police and stewards had
been stationed in the curva nord and they were utterly incapable of
preventing the torrent of missiles flung initially from home fans over
no-man's land into the lower section of the Liverpool support. The
visitors responded, bottles arrowing back over the divide into the
taunting Italians, with an extra line of riot police appearing only once
kick-off approached. More stewards were belatedly deployed once the game
was under way. Liverpool fans' mood was not improved by a banner
referring to the Hillsborough disaster: "15.4.89. Sheffield. God Exists."

By then a message had twice been issued over the public address system,
in Italian and English, warning that anyone caught throwing objects
faced between six months and three years in prison. By the time that
message was reissued at half-time the barrage had resumed, with a flare
spouting fumes from the open terracing in front of the Juve fans.

Perhaps the scenes were to be expected. This tie was a nightmarish
exercise in logistics for the authorities. Police had tightened security
and drafted in undercover agents to help keep the peace, with the
majority of English fans bussed to the stadium last night from
accommodation well outside Turin.

Many were taken straight from the airport to restaurants and bars in
neighbouring towns in order to separate the two sets of fans. The 72
hour alcohol ban apparently imposed in Turin centre - it applied onlyto
bars and not hotels or supermarkets - dissuaded others from venturing
into areas which might otherwise have proved perilous.

Even so, one fan had been attacked in a city pub by five Juventus
supporters wielding bottles and baseball bats. "There was an argument
and a Liverpool fan was hit on the head with a bat by one of the Juve
fans," confirmed Cecilia Tartoni, a spokeswoman for Turin police. "The
Liverpool fan received medical attention in the pub." He was later
deemed fit enough to attend the game.

"Some 20 Juventus fans were stopped by the police," added Tartoni. "We
searched vehicles and their homes and found baseball bats and other
weapons. Eight have been detained for possession of arms."

That set a worrying tone which lingered into the match, for all that the
majority of fans treated the memories of Heysel with much more dignity.
Banners at the opposite end, where hoardings bearing the date 1985 are
permanent, read: "The 39 angels look down with pride on us tonight" and
"What is deep in the heart never dies".

Italian football could have done without last night's darker incidents.
After Tuesday's disgraceful scenes in Milan, when Internazionale fans
pelted the Milan goalkeeper Dida with flares, prompting the abandonment
of their Champions League quarter-final, the prime minister Silvio
Berlusconi had called for "drastic measures" to combat the upsurge of
violence.

Berlusconi met the interior minister Giuseppe Pisanu to discuss the
problem and later warned: "There is a clear risk of even more serious
incidents in future, a risk which must be avoided by all possible
means." Here last night, with emotions running high, risk became reality
yet again.

PA Sport, 13 April 2005
Juventus 0 Liverpool 0 (agg: 1-2)

Liverpool produced the miracle performance nobody expected here in the
Stadio delle Alpi to force their way into the Champions League semi-finals.

They fought like men possessed, deep in defence but never in panic and
Juventus were reduced to almost a standstill as Liverpool reached their
first European Cup semi-final since the Heysel season, 20 years ago.

The heroes were Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia at the back, Xabi Alonso
in midfield and tireless battlers like John Arne Riise and Igor Biscan.
But the triumph belongs to boss Rafael Benitez, who somehow produced a
game plan to defy one of the best sides in Europe.

The noise of police helicopters and the whistling derision of Juve's
fans hung over this vast concrete bowl of a stadium.

Liverpool's fans had been taken from the airport before the game to
out-of-town restaurants and bars before being bussed straight into the
stadium in an attempt to keep both sets of supporters apart on what is a
night of bitter memories for the Turin public who honoured the memory of
the 39 fans who died 20 years ago at Heysel.

Banners draped from the Ultras' end said "39 angels are with us tonight"
and "What is deep in the heart never dies." But sadly, although a vast
empty area had been left around the Liverpool fans, missiles were being
exchanged before the match.

It is hard to know who started it, but objects were clearly being thrown
from both sets of fans and the pitiful amount of stewards - one thin
line of yellow - were doing nothing to stop it. Liverpool's fans
retreated back up the terraces and under cover, but the incident left a
bad tasted in the mouth and it took an age for the police to move into
an area between the rival fans.

Order had been restored when the game finally started and after a quiet
start, Juventus should have been level on aggregate after 11 minutes
when Zlatan Ibrahimovic met a left wing cross just six yards out and
hoisted his effort over the bar.

Liverpool were not defending as deeply as had been expected, and Xabi
Alonso was finding yards of space to link defence with attack.

And it was he who created Liverpool's best early chance when he fed the
ball into Luis Garcia's path, but Gianluigi Buffon was swiftly off his
line to snatch possession from the forward's feet.

Pavel Nedved and Alessandro Del Piero were threatening to evade
Liverpool's offside trap, but the Anfield men got to the half-hour stage
still with their one goal advantage intact. Xabi Alonso got himself
booked for dissent on 33 minutes, his long-running arguments with
referee Valentin Ivanov finally causing the Russian to lose his patience.

But the pressure was being increased and Del Piero almost put Nedved
through with a fine pass only for the Juve fans to be enraged by a
raised linesman's flag.

Luis Garcia and Baros both almost caught the home defence cold with
interceptions, but Liverpool were soon back on the defensive with Jamie
Carragher and Hyypia holding firm.

With the hard-running John Arne Riise playing defensively, Liverpool
were stifling the Juve advances, but a shot from Nedved cannoned away
and then Emerson fire wide.

Juventus brought on an extra striker in Marcelo Zalayeta for Olivera at
the break and were now playing 4-3-3.

But it was Liverpool who should have been ahead after 56 minutes, a
priceless moment that they had been hoping for as they defended with
their lives.

The ball which created the opening was an excellent pass from Xabi
Alonso to find Baros in a couple of yards of space. He held off Montero
as he forced his way into the area but his shot slipped inches wide of
the far post.

Lilian Thuram was booked for a foul on Luis Garcia soon after, and Baros
again almost forced his way through after 57 minutes, cutting across the
face of the box to see his effort deflected wide.

And on the hour, Vladmir Smicer took over from Antonio Nunez, a gamble
by Benitez as he looked for that one piece of attacking flair which
would make all the difference.

After 65 minutes Ibrahimovic was booked for barging Hyypia, Juventus'
frustrations now becoming clear as they fought for the goal that would
surely see them through.

It almost came a minute later when Nedved's header from a free kick by
Mauro Camoranesi was saved by Dudek. Del Piero was next into the book
following an exchange with Smicer.

Igor Biscan was booked as Liverpool were pushed back, and in the 76th
minute Djibril Cisse came on for his first match since breaking his leg
in October, replacing Baros.

Steve Finnan was booked and from the free-kick Fabio Cannavaro saw a
header hit the post, bounce back and hit Dudek and somehow stay out.

Biscan headed over from a Xabi Alonso free-kick, Juve now being whistled
by their own fans, before Fabio Capello threw on Gianluca Pessotto and
Stephen Appiah for Cannavaro and Camoranesi, searching for inspiration
and fresh legs. Luis Garcia was then replaced by Anthony Le Tallec with
five minutes left.

Liverpool though fought like tigers and erupted in joy at the final whistle.

CARRAGHER: WE'RE BACK WHERE WE BELONG

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher tonight insisted the club were back
where they belong as the Reds reached the last four of the Champions League.

They held Juventus to a goalless draw at the Stadio delle Alpi to set up
a semi-final clash with Chelsea and aside from one Fabio Cannavaro
header hitting the post, they defended stoutly.

Carragher told Sky Sports: "We've had a history of being one of the top
teams in Europe and getting to the semi-finals of the Champions League
is where the club needs to be every season. We need to get into these
type of situations.

"Juventus are a top team and we were playing against some top players.
We knew they would have good chances but I think they had more chances
at Anfield, Ibrahimovic missed in the first half and then I don't know
how Cannavaro's header stayed out, but besides that we kept them out well.

"You've got to keep it tight. It gives you more belief to get to
half-time at 0-0, it's little stages all the time, and in the end we got
to final whistle."

Asked about the semi-final against Chelsea, who have had the upper hand
on the Reds domestically this season, he added: "We'll be desperate to
beat them, all the games we've played against them have been very tight
so hopefully it will go our way."

Sami Hyypia, who alongside Carragher put in a sterling defensive
display, said: "Both games were very good. Sometimes you have to fight
and keep the goal clean, and we did it."

Reds manager Rafael Benitez admitted his players had been forced to work
hard for the aggregate victory.

"I am very proud of the staff, the workers, and the players and for us
it was important for the supporters.

"We knew that it was going to be difficult to create chances but playing
against Juve, with set pieces, long balls, we needed to concentrate for
all of the game."

Benitez reserved special praise for Xabi Alonso, who completed his
return from a broken foot to complete 90 minutes and hold his team together.

"We needed a player who can keep the ball and pass it, and he had a very
good game."

Liverpool's best chance fell to Milan Baros early in the second half
when Xabi Alonso set the Czech striker free but under pressure, he could
only put it wide.

"I was very disappointed but if you create some chances they will be
afraid and you can control the game," Benitez told Sky Sports.

Liverpool's form in the Champions League has been far better than their
domestic performances and the former Valencia coach believes momentum is
the key factor in that.

"In the Champions League we have a clear idea and maybe more
confidence," he added.

The Guardian, 13 April 2005
Reds take lead from bold Cissé
Liverpool look for goals against Juve as striker returns to squad after
six months
Dominic Fifield in Turin

If Liverpool were seeking reassurance that they can still pluck unlikely
progress from this tie, they had only to look to the peroxide blond
restored to their ranks for inspiration. Barely six months since he
broke his leg grotesquely, Djibril Cissé flew with the squad to Italy
and could play some part in tonight's daunting second leg at Juventus
with the visitors considerably bolstered by their record signing's return.

Reality has set in since last week's heady victory at Anfield. The
memory of Liverpool's blazing opening that night, which yielded two
goals - as many as the Italians had conceded in the competition all
season - offered so much encouragement that Juve's second-half riposte
went almost forgotten. Now, shorn of their captain with Steven Gerrard
injured and absent, that advantage feels fragile.

To be able to welcome Cissé back to the bench as a potent option is
timely, for all that the £14.1m forward has not kicked a ball since
fracturing the tibia and fibula of his left leg against Blackburn in
late October. Had it not been for the speed at which the club medics
addressed the injury on the turf at Ewood Park, the limb may have had to
be amputated. Now, remarkably, the French international could feature again.

"He's been telling me he wants to play for weeks," said Rafael Benítez.
"I asked him at the weekend if he was afraid about coming back in, but
he just told me he was ready. We'd told him that it's not important for
him to play again this season. The priority was to get him fit for next
season, but big problems need big solutions. There's no risk in terms of
his leg. It's just whether he's fit enough or not. We could use him for
20 minutes if we need his pace or finishing, that little bit of
something extra."

"It's been difficult for me but it's such a wonderful feeling just to be
on the pitch again, never mind in the Champions League," said Cissé.
"It's hard to explain how I've come back so quickly. So much happens in
your head, but at no stage did I wonder whether I'd play again. I'm
ready for Juventus."

Cissé has scored three goals in his 15 appearances to date, with his
reputation arguably enhanced by a prolonged period on the sidelines, but
Liverpool may need his pace to penetrate this evening. The Italians have
not conceded a Champions League goal at the Stadio delle Alpi this
season and have been 1-0 up at 90 minutes in all their home games, going
on to beat Real Madrid 2-0 in the last round.

They need only repeat that to progress - on the four occasions Juve have
been defeated 2-1 in the first leg of a European tie, they have always
emerged victorious on aggregate. "We mustn't get into a panic searching
for the goal," said Fabio Capello, who will be without the injured David
Trezeguet. "It will be about getting a grip of the game in midfield."

If the Merseyside club are to flourish where all before have foundered,
they will need Xabi Alonso to shrug off four months on the sidelines
recovering from a broken ankle. He should start tonight, despite only
having 45 minutes of reserve-team football behind him, alongside Igor
Biscan in Gerrard's absence.

"We couldn't risk losing our most important player for the next six
games," said Benítez, "but with Stevie in the team we have a player who
will work hard in terms of his passing and his tackling. We'll have to
find alternatives now that we're without that.

"We're thinking about winning, nothing else. To be in a semi-final would
be fantastic, but the best way to achieve that is to try and score. A
friend called me yesterday and suggested I use 'the tactics of the bat'
and have 10 players hanging from the crossbar to keep the ball out, but
we might concede in the last few minutes and then what do you do?"

Liverpool shipped late and lost at Manchester City on Saturday and they
must learn from that defeat. Two of their four European Cups were
claimed on Italian soil. Even so, securing passage into the semi-finals
here tonight would still rank as one of their most impressive achievements.

Juventus meanwhile will have to do without striker David Trezeguet.

The French international, who hurt his ankle after appearing as a
second-half substitute in last week's first leg at Anfield, attempted to
train today (Tuesday) but was unable to complete the work-out.

"He hasn't been included in the squad," Juve coach Fabio Capello said.
"He failed to finish training due to the ankle injury.

"I am not a doctor, I am a coach, and therefore I have to respect the
doctor's decision."

Trezeguet's absence means Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic will play
alongside Alessandro del Piero in attack as Juve attempt to overturn a
2-1 deficit.

Midfielder Emerson, who had been an injury doubt, is fit again after
sitting out Saturday night's 3-3 draw at Fiorentina and is included in
the squad.

Daily Telegraph, 13 April 2005
Time for Turin to extend a hand of peace to Liverpool
By Paola Franchetti in Turin

"I was in Brussels, I know what they did to us."

We heard that reference to the Heysel stadium tragedy echo at
Liverpool's John Lennon airport when city mayor Frank Roderick and
Italian consul Nunzia Bertali were meeting Juventus supporters arriving
from Italy. It came from a Juventus fan, enraged at gestures of
friendship from Liverpool.

Here in Italy we have heard those words many times, but we have never
felt so ashamed of them. It wasn't the majority of Juventus fans, it was
just one. But that was enough.

It does not prevent Juventus fans from feeling disgusted. It deprives us
of the dignity and friendliness that fans of the Vecchia Signora - the
Old Lady, as Juventus is known in Italy - normally have.

Unfortunately, when the behaviour of small groups of supporters defies
good sense and intelligence, to use Juventus coach Fabio Capello's
words, they are noticed far more than the well-behaved majority. Despite
the sentiments of that supporter, I guarantee most Juventus fans believe
it's time to give a new meaning to those words. We want to continue
building friendship with the Liverpool fans, who showed their will to
start anew when they organised meetings, receptions and displayed
banners last week.

That minority are a threat not simply to rivals, but to us, the people
who go to the stadium simply to have fun and watch a good match, and to
our image as Italians and Juventus fans. That is why everyone here, from
Turin city authorities and the police to Juventus fans, are working hard
to isolate those fringe elements for tonight's match.

I have been attending Juventus games for 23 years now. I remember my
shock when I was watching the Heysel final on television. I was 10. My
parents sent me away from the television. Nobody has forgotten, but 20
years after the tragedy the huge majority of people are ready for a new
start, but not all of them, as certain behaviour sadly demonstrated at
Anfield.

Capello expressed the thoughts of many when he said: "Intelligent people
mustn't even think of what happened. Whoever behaves like those Juve
fans goes against good sense, against the objective of rebuilding the
relationships between the two clubs and against all that we are doing
for this sport. After 20 years there are no innocent or guilty people
any more."

Alessandro Del Piero, the striker who is a symbol to Juventus
supporters, said: "I hope our supporters let Liverpool fans feel an
atmosphere of friendship, as they did for us at Anfield."

Juventus chairman Franzo Grande Stevens, as well as other club officials
and the Liverpool management, are holding meetings with Otello
Lorentini, president of the association of Heysel victims. There will be
a commemorative ceremony and meetings to encourage fans of both sides to
make the match a night of great sport and extend their links in the future.

Marco Voltri, a Juventus fan, was at Heysel. His words are eloquent: "I
didn't speak for over a week for the shock of that night but very much
because of this I am aware of the importance of making a new start, to
shake hands with Liverpool fans. If some Juventus fans don't understand
this, it's their problem. I won't forget that night, but that doesn't
mean we can't make a new start. We can and must do so."

Nearly all Juventus fans agree with him. They hope to see Liverpool
supporters so they can shake hands with them. Help us to make this a
great day of sport.

Liverpool Echo, 12 April 2005
Baros facing key role in defensive operation
By Ian Rush, Liverpool Echo

DEFENSIVE excellence is essential if Liverpool are to overcome Juventus,
but the key man will be playing at the other end of the park.

Milan Baros' performance could be the difference between both teams.
He's going to have to play an unselfish, but crucial role.

Whenever we went away in Europe during our heyday, we employed the
system I expect Rafa Benitez to use in Turin.

It was always 4-4-1-1, with Kenny Dalglish playing deep enough to make
an extra midfielder.

The instructions to me were clear.

Basically, work harder than you've ever done before, keep the ball as
much as possible and don't allow their defenders any time or space to
start attacks.

I had no illusions about my responsibility going into those memorable games.

Sometimes, I didn't expect to get a chance. I knew I was in the side for
a specific purpose, helping my defenders and midfielders get some relief
because, more often than not, you're going to spend most of the game in
your own half.

We enjoyed some fantastic away performances playing this way,
particularly in games where the first leg left the outcome of the tie in
the balance.

A lot of people mention our semi-final win away in Bucharest in 1984,
when I was on the scoresheet.

For me, the crucial night was much earlier.

We played Atletico Bilbao in the second round. After drawing 0-0 at
Anfield in the first leg, the Spanish side thought they had done all the
hard work. Then we played a classic European match and when a chance
came our way, we took it.

I didn't have many opportunities, but the goal came from a right-footed
Alan Kennedy cross and my header. Both rarities.

Baros may only get one chance himself tomorrow. When it comes, he's got
to put it away.

He'll spend most of the night doing the kind of ugly work which no
striker looks forward to, but the rewards will come his way if he shows
his strength of character.

If Liverpool get the right result, it will be as good as anything the
club has produced since we last won the European Cup.

The UEFA Cup run in 2001 was fantastic, and the 0-0 draw in Barcelona
and 2-0 win in Rome were memorable in their own right.

But I think a draw in Turin would eclipse those achievements.

Juventus are a formidable side, while Liverpool will clearly be under
strength, but I'm sure the players will rise to the occasion.

If they reach the semi-finals, it will be an achievement to stand
alongside all our most famous European results.

Alonso must be risked

I DON'T see much choice but to risk Xabi Alonso against Juventus tomorrow.

The injury to Steven Gerrard leaves Rafa Benitez short of midfielders,
so Alonso will have to play some part.

Even if Alonso can only play an hour, it will at least offer some
quality in the centre of midfield.

A few people have suggested to me that Jamie Carragher could fill a
central midfield role, but I disagree.

I want to see Carra at the heart of the defence. There's no point
upsetting another area of the side and moving too many players around.

Cisse joins Reds squad
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

DJIBRIL CISSE will complete a staggering comeback by taking his place on
the Liverpool bench in Turin tomorrow.

Rafael Benitez today confirmed the French striker's complete recovery
from a horrific broken leg suffered in the autumn.

And while the Anfield boss is cautious about the striker's chances of
playing any part against Juventus, he said he would consider using Cisse
if Liverpool need a goal in the later stages.

Cisse has not played for just under six months but his recovery has
defied medical opinion.

"We have had big problems but now we have big solutions," said Benitez.

"We have lost Steven Gerrard but Djibril Cisse and Xabi Alonso are back
in the squad.

"Cisse will not start but he will train with the team and if we need him
we will use him. It's possible he will play some part.

"He may be an option for the end of the game. After six months obviously
he is not fit but he still has qualities which could be useful as a
player who was top scorer all the years he was in France.

"He is someone we want to think about."

Cisse suffered a double fracture of his left leg against Blackburn
Rovers on October 30. It was a comminuted fracture, which means the
bones not only broke, but in parts shattered.

The player himself immediately predicted he would be back within six
months, even though experts thought he could be missing for a year.

Benitez must now ponder a key recall for Alonso.

As he prepared to fly out to Turin today, Benitez said: "We must also
decide on Xabi. We have to be sure he has the physical condition for
this game. But Xabi is a very clever player so he may be able to cope."

Benitez was clearly downbeat about losing his captain but buoyed by the
more positive news.

He added: "Steven is a big player for us and we were thinking of using
him even if it was just on the bench. But it was too much of a risk."

Benitez has not decided yet whether to stick with Scott Carson in goal
or recall Jerzy Dudek. He has confirmed Sami Hyypia will captain the
side in Gerrard's absence as they defend their 2-1 lead from the first leg.

The Liverpool manager is hoping his first European adventure with
Liverpool may prove one of the most memorable in the club's history.

"I hope the fans will soon be talking about one of the best away
performances they can remember in Europe."

[lfc-news] Juve: we have sold tickets to English - Echo

Juve: we have sold tickets to English
From Tony Barrett in Turin, Liverpool Echo

JUVENTUS have sold tickets to English fans for Wednesday's match, the
club admitted.

Around 3,000 Reds supporters are expected to go to Turin for the
second-leg of the European Champions League quarter-final.

Fears had been raised that Liverpool fans might bypass security
arrangements by getting themselves seats among the home fans - and now
Juventus officials have admitted this could happen.

Last week's first leg match at Anfield passed without any trouble with
the travelling Juventus fans treated to a warm welcome.

But with feelings running high in Italy as the 20th anniversary of the
Heysel stadium disaster approaches, there are fears that some Italian
hooligans may seek revenge for the tragedy.

Liverpool FC have not yet sold their full allocation of tickets for the
match and club officials have appealed to fans not to travel without a
ticket for the Liverpool end of the Stadio delle Alpi .

But today a Juventus spokesman confirmed they are aware that as many as
28 tickets have been bought by people living in the UK.

The spokesman told the ECHO: "Juventus would like to clarify that, as of
Wednesday, the Juventus ticket office received only 10 requests from the UK.

"The 10 customers bought a total of 28 tickets - in majority for Stands
West 1A and East 3A - and out of those 28 tickets, seven have been
purchased by two Italian supporters residing in the UK."

The first groups of Liverpool supporters are expected to arrive in Italy
tomorow, with many more arriving on day trips on Wednesday.

A ring of steel will surround the stadium ahead of the match as police
aim to stop anyone without a ticket getting anywhere near the ground.

A group of hardcore Juventus "Ultras" have made it known they were not
willing to accept apologies from Liverpool fans for their role in the
Heysel tragedy.

One website posting by a member of the notorious Drughi Ultras says:
"The time has finally arrived when we can seek vengeance.

"The blood of the 39 victims of Heysel is still fresh in our minds. The
English will be made to pay."

Fans have received leaflets telling them what they should and shouldn't
do when in Turin, including a range of safety warnings.

Buses are being laid on to take Reds supporters from the centre of Turin
direct to the stadium.

And anyone trying to get into the stadium carrying anything that could
be used as a missile - including coins - will have such objects confiscated.

Juventus officials today confirmed they are finalising plans for a
commemorative event tomorrow and another before the match itself.
