MEMORIA E AMICIZIA - LFC HONOUR THE HEYSEL 39
By Mark Platt

Liverpool Football Club will honour the memory of the 39 victims of
Heysel with a number of commemorative gestures in the lead-up to Tuesday
night's Champions League tie with Juventus.

This first meeting of the Reds and Juve since that tragic night in
Brussels 20 years ago is sure to be an emotive one for all concerned and
Liverpoolfc.tv can reveal that after consultation with supporters the
following has been arranged with the spirit of friendship and
understanding in mind...

# A Friendship match between the Liverpool and Juventus fans that will
take place at the Academy on Tuesday kicking off at 1.30pm.

# A Kop Mosaic featuring the word Amicizia (friendship) alongside a
Liver Bird and the respective club colours. This will be displayed in
conjunction with a one minute silence prior to kick-off on Tuesday.

# Every visiting fan will receive a free four-page brochure in Italian
aimed at promoting friendship and understanding between the supporters.
The front cover will carry the club crests and words of welcome. Inside
there'll be a personal message to the Juve fans from Ian Rush and the
split image picture showing him in Liverpool and Juventus kits. On the
back will be the words for: We Are Sorry. You'll Never Walk Alone.

# Every visiting fan will also receive special wristband in red, white
and black with the inscription friendship in both Italian/English.

# Commemorative Juve/Liverpool FC scarves and t-shirts are being produced.

# The matchday programme is also to be completely re-designed to pick up
on the friendship theme. The cover will carry the hand of friendship
logo used on the scarf. The teams will be removed from the back page and
replaced by an image of the Memoria e Amacizia banner (see below).

# A banner carrying the themed In Memoria e Amicizia (In Memory and
Friendship) message will be carried by fans from the Kop to the Juve end
prior to kick-off. Phil Neal, Liverpool captain at Heysel in 1985, will
help perform this ceremony. The banner will carry the Christian names of
the 39 Heysel victims and the symbolic union of the Liverpool Liver Bird
and the Juve Zebra.

The Memoria e Amacizia banner was first was first seen at Anfield prior
to the Liverpool v Blackburn match in May 1995 (on the 10th anniversary
of Heysel) and more recently paraded in front of the Kop during
half-time at the derby to a warm round of applause.

The original inspiration for the banner was two Liverpool youth workers,
the late Janet Murphy from The Marybone centre, and the late Alf
Langley, a founder member of the Football Arts Initiative, who took a
youth group to Turin in a non-football related exchange of friendship in
the summer of 1989.

It was created to commemorate the tenth anniversary by Peter Carney and
fellow members of the FAI, a Merseyside organisation that came together
with the Sport Against Racism group in the wake of Hillsborough, and had
already been on their own bridge building mission to Turin with the
blessing of Liverpool Football Club in 1990.

At the time a lot of people in this city just wanted to reach out and
genuinely do what they could to renew friendships, said Peter, an
Anfield season-ticket holder and founder member of the Hillsborough
Justice campaign.

It's the same sentiment now. Liverpool Football Club just want to extend
a warm welcome to Juventus fans, offer their hand in friendship and
recognise the hurt.

KIRKLAND CLOSING IN ON RETURN
By Steve Hunter

Chris Kirkland has given Liverpool a major boost by declaring he should
be back in action before the end of the season following a successful
back operation.

The talented England Under-21 international goalkeeper has had a well
documented spell of injuries during his time at Anfield but he is still
keeping his head up and remains confident the nightmare time he has had
is well and truly over.

Kirkland last played for the first team on 11th December 2004 in the
derby at Goodison Park and then underwent surgery to finally cure a
persistent back problem.

Kirkland told Liverpoolfc.tv: "The recovery is going very well. I had
the operation on my back eleven weeks ago and it needed doing because I
had been struggling with it for some time. The club and myself decided
that the best thing to do was get it all sorted out so it's gone very
well. I'm running again but I'm still a couple of week's away from
diving and making saves but I'm hoping to be back in action this season.

"I hope to play before the end of this season, it's obviously up to the
gaffer when I play but all I can do is get myself back and fit. If the
manager wants me to wait and work more on my fitness then we will decide
that later on.

"I hope the problems I have had will now be over. Before the operation
it wasn't just playing that was the problem, it was getting out of bed
in the mornings and it was everything in general so I thought the best
thing was to have the operation. I am fine now and can't feel anything
which is great for me."

The highly rated keeper says it has been difficult at times being on the
sidelines but he is grateful to the Liverpool fans whom he has met on
the street for keeping his spirits up.

Kirkland said: "It's difficult to put into words what I have been
through. It's just been very, very disappointing and to be honest since
I've come here it's been very stop start. I've had some serious injuries
but you just have to carry on and keep your head up and that's what I am
looking to do now. I've had people come up to me and wish me well and
hope I can get back quickly which is nice."

I put it to him that he could certainly do with some form of lady luck now.

"I could do yeah!" Kirkland retorted. "I don't know what I've done in a
previous life but it couldn't have been very nice!

"While I've been out I have only been to a couple of games but not many.
I'm a frustrated watcher because I've watched more games than I've
played in so I tend to stay away, but I still look for the lads results
all the time.

"I just want to come back fully fit and be a part of it again. The last
match at Anfield I played was against Olympiacos and it was such a great
night to be involved in, especially as we went a goal down. The second
half was just unbelievable and it went so quick as well but it was a
great strike from Stevie to win us the game. It could only be him to
score a goal like that."

Kirkland has also welcomed the arrival of fellow England Under-21
international goalkeeper Scott Carson to Anfield and believes there is
good healthy competition for the number one shirt.

Kirkland said: "Scotty is a great goalkeeper, he is English as well
which is great, and you know at any top club you are going to have
competition. Scotty's arrival will hopefully bring the keepers at the
club on even more.

"I have just got to work hard during pre-season and hopefully impress
the manager."

New stadium delay costs £750,000 a month
By David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

THE soaring price of delays to Liverpool FC's new stadium plans is
costing the club more than £750,000 a month.

As rising construction costs force up the price of the planned
60,000-seater stadium, some experts say the monthly rise is nearer £1m.

It comes as the North West Development Agency continues to stall on
releasing an £11m grant for the club, in a bid to resurrect the failed
groundshare plan with Everton.

Stanley Park Stadium project has already escalated from £80m in 2003 to
£120m.

Yet three government departments involved in the saga have no plans to
pressurise the NWDA to make a decision.

NWDA chairman Bryan Gray wants the ground share plan to go ahead, even
though sports minister Richard Caborn has already declared it a non-starter.

Now industry experts have warned that buildings costs will soar again as
the north west construction boom continues.

Over the past year tender prices in the building industry have risen by
up to 7% and, driven by higher demand and rising material prices,
building costs have risen by 7.3% over the past year.

The office of the deputy prime minister had the chance to "call in" the
stadium proposal for closer examination after it received planning
permission from the council, but chose not to.

A spokesman said the department's involvement ended there as the NWDA
was the responsibility of the Department for Trade and Industry.

But the DTI said how the NWDA distributes its money is completely its
own decision.

TRAORE MAKES SUCCESSFUL COMEBACK
Steve Hunter at Wrexham

Djimi Traore has given Rafael Benitez a major boost by returning from
injury to play 45 minutes for Liverpool Reserves in their 2-0 defeat by
Wolves at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground.

Traore played well during the first 45 minutes and made one superb
interception to deny Wolves Colin Cameron a goal after three minutes. He
looked sharp and should come into contention for Saturday's meeting with
Bolton Wanderers.

Besides Traore's inclusion Liverpool Reserve manager Hughie McAuley
fielded a young side largely made up of players from the Academy
Under-18 team. Darren Potter was back from international duty with the
Republic of Ireland Under-21s to captain the Liverpool team and he and
David Raven were the more experienced Reds players. McAuley was without
John Welsh on international duty with England Under-21s and Anthony Le
Tallec with France Under-21s.

There was certainly no shortage of effort from the Liverpool players and
James Smith had another excellent game at centre half, while Paul
Harrison had another fine game in goal.

Wolves fielded several experienced players including Swedish
international Jochim Bjorklund, former Wimbledon and Stockport winger
Kevin Cooper and Scottish international Colin Cameron.

Traore came close to a Liverpool goal after 27 minutes when his aerial
threat caused problems following a corner but after a scramble Wolves
cleared the threat.

Scottish youth international winger Ryan Wilkie then went close for
Liverpool with a low drilled shot that went just wide before Wolves
stepped up the play and took the lead.

Harrison had already saved from Cameron before Kevin Cooper put Wolves
1-0 up after 35 minutes, finishing well after good approach play from
Chris Cornes.

For the second half Academy left back Danny Smith replaced Traore at
left back.

Leon Clarke then missed a good chance for Wolves before Darren Potter
went close for Liverpool after 64 minutes with a low shot that was well
saved by Carl Ikeme.

Liverpool then put the best move of the match together after 69 minutes
which deserved a goal. A superb first time pass from David Mannix sent
Academy midfielder Paul Barratt racing away down the right wing. He sent
in a low cross to the back post which was met first time by Ryan Wilkie
but he shot wide.

Wilkie went even closer two minutes later with a superb curled drive
that brought a brilliant save on the stretch from Ikeme.

At the other end Harrison saved brilliantly to keep out an effort from
Cooper but from the resulting corner Wolves made it 2-0 when Keith Lowe
touched home from close range.

Harrison then made a brilliant double save, the first the best of them
to keep out a Lowe header.

Irish youth international striker Conal Platt then went close for
Liverpool with a terrific little turn followed by a first time shot that
went just wide.

Liverpool Reserves: Harrison, Raven, Traore (D Smith 45), J Smith,
O'Donnell, Potter, Barratt, Mannix, Platt, Noon (Hammill 72), Wilkie.
Unused subs: Luzi, Hitchen, Frayne.

Wolves Reserves: Ikeme, Little, Flynn, Andrews, Lowe, Bjorklund, Cooper,
Clingan, Clarke, Cameron, Cornes.

Referee: N Swarbrick.

Liverpoolfc.tv Man of the Match: James Smith. Another very assured
display at centre half, while Paul Harrison made two fantastic saves.

Reds had every right to savour derby win
By Ian Rush, Liverpool Echo

IF I was playing in a derby match the team had to win, had missed a lot
of chances to secure victory, lost four of my team-mates due to injury
and saw another sent off, basically reducing my side to nine men, I
would be very relieved when the final whistle went.

In fact, I would go so far as to say I'd be ecstatic.

With this in mind, I find some of the comments begrudging Liverpool
their moment of celebration in last week's derby both surprising and
disappointing.

An opponent might not like to see their rival enjoying their win, but
certain inappropriate comments would have been better left unsaid. It
tastes of sour grapes.

Let's not kid ourselves. Had Everton won at Anfield they would have
savoured the moment just as much as Liverpool. This was a huge game,
particularly for Liverpool, who knew they couldn't afford to lose.

As for those who say this is a sign of how far Liverpool have 'sunk',
don't make me laugh.

Derby wins, particularly in adversity, always felt this good. I was on
the wrong and right end of such scenes of jubilation during my career.

The feeling of victory helped team spirit, made me want it more and
more, while the pain of defeat made me more determined to never
experience it again.

If the players of both Liverpool and Everton didn't feel the same last
week, something is wrong with them.

Time for sense of perspective

AFTER beating Northern Ireland so comfortably, it's obvious England are
going to win the World Cup next year.

Well, that's what you would think following the strange aftermath to the
victory at Old Trafford.

The reaction to England's results never ceases to amaze me. If they lose
a meaningless friendly, all you read about for days is criticism of the
manager.

Now, having easily beaten weak opposition, they're being tipped by some
as the best team in the world.

Joe Cole, who had a good game at the weekend, is now described as the
answer to the left-sided problem.

Sorry if I sound a bit cynical, but I would reserve judgment on both
these conclusions until Sven- Goran Eriksson's side meets a world class
team.

To me, England are what they have always been - a very good side with
some fantastic players -but with a lot more to prove to suggest they can
win the World Cup.

The worrying thing for England supporters is how recent opportunities
have been missed in major competitions. In both the World Cup in 2002
and last year's European Champion-ships, the team were found wanting
when it really mattered.

They went into those tournaments as one of about four teams capable of
winning it, but fell short of expectations.

Part of that was some of the tactical decisions, which contributed to
England's own downfall.

Against Brazil, England had control of the game, only to throw it away.
When things were going wrong, they didn't have a response.

Last summer in Portugal, we saw the same thing. A game which could have
been won was surrendered. When Wayne Rooney went off, the side was never
the same.

Between now and next summer, England aren't going to get the kind of
test they're sure to get in Germany. Their preparation won't be made up
of hard matches.

Their qualifying group is one of the weakest and only by facing one of
the strongest sides will we really know how good the current side is or
whether someone like Cole really can turn himself into an international
left midfielder.

Having said that, England are in a lot better shape than Wales at the
moment.

I was in Cardiff to see the defeat against Austria.

It wasn't a disastrous result or performance. Our chances of qualifying
had already gone. But it was a disappointing start.

It's clear John Toshack needs plenty of time to enforce his own
philosophy. He's not going to make major improvements overnight.

Most of us in Wales are realistic about our situation and won't make
silly declarations on the basis of one game. I think a few people in
England should do the same.

JOY FOR MILAN, STEVIE AND JERZY
By Steve Hunter

There was joy for Milan Baros who scored a vital goal for the Czech
Republic in their 4-3 World Cup qualifying win over Sami Hyypia's Finland.

Baros scored after seven minutes for his 22nd goal in 36 international
caps but Finland came back from 2-0 and 3-1 down to make it 3-3, before
a dramatic late winner won it for the Czechs. Former Liverpool star Jari
Litmanen, now playing for FC Hansa Rostock, scored for Finland and
Hyypia won his 68th cap. Baros was also substituted in the second half
but it was a tactical decision.

It was an important victory for Baros' team as they leapfrog Finland and
Romania in the Group One table in second place, one point behind Holland.

Meanwhile Steven Gerrard won his 33rd cap for England as he played his
part in the 4-0 win over Northern Ireland. He was given a rest and
replaced by Owen Hargreaves after 71 minutes.

It was a great night for Jerzy Dudek winning his 50th cap as he was a
virtual spectator as Poland trounced Azerbaijan 8-0. The Reds stopper
did have to make one good save in the first half but the reality was it
was one of the most one sided attacking football exhibition from the
Poles you will ever see. The score could easily have been 12-0 or more.

There was despair though for Steve Finnan and Irish eyes certainly were
not smiling as Israel snatched an injury time equaliser to force a 1-1
draw. Finnan won his 36th cap and played the full 90 minutes in a right
side midfield role.

Luis Garcia gave Rafael Benitez a major boost as he has fully recovered
from the ankle injury picked up in the derby, and made his debut for
Spain in their 3-0 international friendly win over China PR.

The Liverpool number 10 came on as a 54th minute substitute for Joaquin
and almost made it a scoring debut when he hit the bar with a shot from
the edge of the penalty area.

Liverpool duo Scott Carson and John Welsh were in action for England
Under-21s when they drew 2-2 with Germany in an Under-21 European
Championship qualifier.

Unfortunately a mistake from Reds keeper Carson handed Germany an
equaliser when he hit a clearance straight to an opposing player, but it
most be noted he did make several excellent saves in the match. It could
also be said that a succession of bad misses cost England the points.

Carson played the full 90 minutes while Welsh played a very impressive
second half after appearing from the bench.

England Under-21 manager Peter Taylor backed Carson to bounce back and
said: "Scotty is very down and it was a bad mistake but he is a great
keeper and he will bounce back."

Welsh and Carson are next in action on Tuesday when they entertain
Azerbaijan at Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium in a Euro Under-21
qualifier.

THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT AS LEGENDS TURN ON THE STYLE
Steve Hunter at Anfield

Entertainment was the name of the game as Reds heroes like Dalglish,
Fowler, Rush and Molby turned back the years to raise a great deal of
money for the Tsunami Soccer Aid appeal at Anfield.

A Liverpool legends side beat a Celebrities XI 6-2 and thoroughly
entertained a massive crowd of 39,000 at Anfield. For Steve Fletcher,
Jason McAteer, David Johnson and Dave Lockwood it was the realisation of
their dream come true to stage this match and raise much needed funds
for the Tsunami appeal, Save The Children UK and Merlin.

Liverpool Football Club and Chief Executive Rick Parry were only too
happy to stage this match and the fans turned out in their thousands to
witness what could possible be the last time that all these Reds legends
turned out on the hallowed Anfield turf for a match.

The names just rolled off the tongue and it was truly a magical
occasion. The celebrities were great value too and it made for a great
game of competitive football. There were goals galore, laughs and jokes
were exchanged and the crowd just loved it.

Welsh opera singer Catherine Jenkins led the crowd in an emotional
'You'll Never Walk Alone' before kick-off and Liz McClarnon from Atomic
Kitten also enjoyed a sing-a-long with the Kop.

With Roy Evans away on international duty with Wales it was left to
Kenny Dalglish to take on the mantle of player-manager once again with
Ronnie Moran as his loyal and truly capable assistant.

One of the prime organisers Jason McAteer was given special permission
by Tranmere Rovers manager Brian Little to play 15 minutes and
captaining the Liverpool team he scored twice before leaving the field.
The first was a terrific finish after a great one-two with Robbie Fowler.

Fowler thought he had scored the third goal but the final touch actually
came off comic actor Patrick McGuinness, who plays bouncer Paddy in
Phoenix Nights with Peter Kay.

The Celebrities, managed by Southampton boss Harry Redknapp, then got
back into the game through Harvey from So Solid Crew. Now Harvey, a
massive Liverpool fan, had an ambition to score a goal at the Kop end
and he truly obliged when he set off like an olympic sprinter before
beating Bruce Grobbelaar at his near post.

John Aldridge was denied a goal by a brilliant save from his former
Tranmere Rovers team-mate Eric Nixon before Ian Rush made it 4-1 with a
fantastic left footed strike.

Into the second half Radio City competition winner Alan Farley got his
dream of playing at Anfield and captained the Reds side at left back.

Steve Fletcher, who had the original idea to stage this event, achieved
an ambition by scoring at his beloved Anfield to make it 4-2. Brian
McFadden set him clear and his chipped finish past Sander Westerveld was
majestic.

Then a truly special moment happened. Last year David Johnson suffered a
heart attack and had open heart surgery. Now he is fighting fit again
and he had a dream of playing at Anfield again and scoring at the Kop.
It arrived with a diving header from Jan Molby's pinpoint cross.

Then the biggest cheer of the day arrived and it nearly blew the Anfield
roof off as 'King' Kenny decided to bring himself on. Straight away
Dalglish showed us he still has the touch and class plus the eye for a
pass. One such through ball put Ian Rush away who was denied by Reds
keeper Paul Harrison, then from the rebound Fowler struck a superb
curling shot against the post.

Now John Aldridge last scored at Anfield in front of a packed Kop on his
farewell match in 1989 in the 9-0 rout against Crystal Palace. He
relived that moment again from a superb Dalglish through ball and
predator Aldo trademark finish for 6-2.

Try as he might Kop hero Robbie Fowler just couldn't score a goal and he
had so many near misses, as did Aldridge.

In the end the scoreline didn't matter but the real reason why we love
Liverpool FC so much was summed up in 90 minutes on an Easter Sunday in
2005. Football is all about entertainment and this was entertainment of
the highest order. To get 39,000 fans packed into Anfield and a singing
Kop to mark the day was just fantastic.

It was quite an emotional occasion too as there were LFC legends
everywhere you looked around Anfield with some working behind the scenes
in the lounges. One of Bill Shankly's greats Ian St John, commentating
for Liverpoolfc.tv remembered Emlyn Hughes and said his memory will live
on forever with Liverpool FC and how he would have loved to have been
here today. The Saint also passed on the LFC legends thoughts to wish
Anfield legend Ray Clemence a speedy recovery from his illness.

The displays from Molby, Fowler, Dalglish, Rush, Aldridge, Barnes and
Alan Kennedy to name but seven was class. A Robbie Fowler goal would
have been the icing on the cake but it just wasn't to be on the day no
matter how many times he tried. The reception Fowler, Dalglish and the
legends got from the Kop told it's own story.

The Celebrities showed they have some good players too. Ralf Little from
the Royle Family had an excellent game as did England cricket captain
Michael Vaughan. DJ Spoony and Harvey also showed they are more than
capable footballers.

The real winner was the Tsunami Soccer Aid appeal and for all that were
present at Anfield it was truly special.

Liverpool legends: Bruce Grobbelaar, Phil Neal, Alan Kennedy, Jason
McAteer, Phil Thompson, Alan Hansen, Kenny Dalglish, John Aldridge, Ian
Rush, Robbie Fowler, John Barnes, Ronnie Whelan, Jan Molby, Sander
