[Liverweb] Birmingham Match Report

Liverweb Match Report

A late comedy own goal from Xabi Alonso ensured that Birmingham ran
off with a point from Anfield. In a game that was hyped up about the
return of Robbie Fowler the match just didn't quite burst in to full
life and Birmingham got a point from a match that should have been
over and done with a long time earlier.

The Reds started with Fowler on the bench whilst Dan Agger came in
for his Liverpool debut alongside Sami Hyypia. The Reds defended the
Kop end in the first half and Birmingham kicked off. What was good
about the first half hour of this match was that Birmingham turned
up and really wanted to have a go at the Reds. Pennant and Dunn were
both looking to get at the Reds with pace and skill. Dan Agger
started a bit nervously in the match and was often found wanting in
the opening minutes. Thankfully as time went on his confidence came.

Birmingham had the first decent chance of the night but Heskey just
couldn't quite get on the end of a Pennant shot. Steven Gerrard then
hit the bar at the other end in what was proving to be an open
encounter. David Dunn chipped a shot just over the bar eleven
minutes in to the game. For the Reds the best outlet ball was for
Harry Kewell who looked eager to get hold of it and run at his man.

Just after the half way mark Chris Sutton shot from distance but the
chance was saved by Reina at the second attempt. Minutes later at
the other end Crouch headed over the bar when he out jumped his
marker.

The game took a massive turn on twenty seven minutes when Damian
Johnson was red carded for an over zealous dive on Dan Agger in the
centre circle. Uriah Rennie was right next to the incident and
couldn't get his red card out of his pocket quick enough. Agger
needed treatment but returned from the sidelines straight away.
Birmingham at this point dropped Sutton off in to midfield. Minutes
later Dunn was forced off and Laziridis came on to replace him.

Against ten men you really have to make the ball do the work and
tire the opposition out. That's not something we did really. Crouch
fired a volley just wide before half time and then Garcia blazed
over just before the half time whistle blew. Half time needed a re
think surely and Xabi Alonso and the other subs were sent out to
warm up with Pako. Alonso for Hamann was the sub I had in mind but
as the teams arrived for the second half no change was made.

The Reds attacked the Kop end in the second half and as Maik Taylor
took to his guard he applauded the Kop. In the first minutes of the
half both Crouch and Agger went close with headers. It started a
time of Reds pressure which ultimately concluded with the opening
goal. That goal came on sixty two minutes from Steven Gerrard. Didi
Hamann squared the ball to Gerrard outside the area. He moved it to
Garcia in a one two and then to Morientes who broke clear in the
area. His pull back to Gerrard was side footed home past Taylor.

With the Reds now up they also brought Robbie Fowler on before the
game was re-started. This just brought the house down. Birmingham
also made a switch at this point as well which allowed more time for
chants of Fowler to go up and then chants of Robbie! The game now
was surely set for the Reds. Riise saw a volley from the edge of the
area tipped over the bar. A minute later Fowler was called offside
which brought the linesman a few heckles to say the least.

The Reds made a second switch when Gerrard was replaced by Alonso
which saw Sami Hyypia take over as captain on the pitch. With the
Reds in control this could carve the way for more goals surely.
However as time ticked on and the score remained one nil the Reds
slowly came under some pressure from Birmingham. They took a gamble
sometimes as well in pushing Sutton back up front and playing three
in the midfield. Pennant came back in to the game a bit more and he
was certainly amused at the chant of your supposed to be in jail
that went up for him.

The night turned dramatically though in the final five minutes of
normal time. On eighty five minutes Heskey was free in the box and
thumped a great header towards the net but Reina pulled off a superb
stop to push the ball for a corner. It gave Birmingham hope though
and with their side having some good headers of the ball you never
relaxed as they played corners in. Then on eighty eight minutes
Birmingham equalised. A nothing ball came over the defence and was
harmlessly trickling through to Reina. Alonso tried to help cushion
the ball on the line with his chest but inadvertently sent it in to
the back of the net.

Suddenly the Reds were level and it was panic now. Attack after
attack followed and you only wished this had happened at one nil and
not one all. Alonso nearly got his own back in the final minutes but
his free kick that was destined for the top corner was superbly
tipped over by Taylor. The Reds peppered the goal and Gray was
forced to clear off the line at one point as the Reds hit the bar as
well. Then in the final minute of stoppage time the ball was headed
on within the area and Fowler hit an overhead kick past Maik Taylor.
Most of the crowd went mad until they saw the offside flag up. It
was probably right but the script it has to be said was there for
Fowler and he was gutted.

Overall this was really disappointing because we had all the chances
to make this a comfortable three or four nil won but having dithered
around too much at one nil you leave the door open for the other
side to sneak in and score. That it was such a comedy goal to
concede as well was just a bad but you had this strange feeling that
a goal was coming.

MotM : Harry Kewell - looked really up for the game and was looking
to beat his man at every chance. The downside was that we didn't
give him enough ball.

[Liverweb] Weekly Article

The week has been largely shaped by the return of Robbie Fowler to the
Reds. A potentially massive signing for us and it was so good to see
Fowler back in a Reds shirt. Of course Robbie was so eager to get to
training he managed to get caught speeding.

With the transfer window now closed again we have done ok in the
market but again missed a right sided player. We've got Agger at the
back and Robbie up front but they midfield looks to need just an extra
edge to it.

The last couple of games have seen a win and a draw for the Reds but
worryingly a tired looking side. With games coming thick and fast this
is a big worry from many fans. Can tiredness be cured? Squad rotation
is going to be crucial now but whilst it's necessary those coming in
must always go that extra mile to still win games.

[Liverweb] Latest News

The date for the FA Cup game against man United has been confirmed
as Saturday Feb 18. The kick off will be 12.30

Mark Gonzalez has joined Real Sociedad on loan for the rest of the
season. It is hoped that after that Gonzalez will be given a
Spanish passport and he could then complete his move to the Reds.

David Raven has joined Tranmere for the rest fo the season on loan.

A move for Victor fell through due to a disagreement between Victor
and Deportivo about his severance pay.

Finally the only other deal that should go through before the
transfer window shuts tonight is a loan deal for Florent Sinama
Pongolle to Blackburn.

Finally an interview of Robbie Fowler today.

Robbie, I guess dreams do come true, don't they?

"Yes. I think if you pray enough for things, well I'm proof that
they can happen. I'm absolutely delighted to be back. I feel like a
kid waking up on Christmas morning every day now! It's fantastic and
it's something that I have wanted to happen for such a long time. I
am very glad that it has come about again."

When did you first get an inkling that this deal would happen?

"Probably on Wednesday night. Obviously there were a few rumours
flying around before then and, like everybody else, I wanted them to
be true. Friday, when it all got sorted, was a really surreal day.
When Mr Parry put the contract in front of me, I didn't have to read
it. I was very confident in what I was doing and it is an absolutely
fantastic position in to be in - having the chance to come back here
and I am hoping that I can repay the manager's faith in me."

Has it been emotional and have there been tears shed?

"No, if I am being honest I haven't shed any tears, but I think that
you can all tell by the look on my face just how much it means to me
to come back. It's something that I have wanted to happen for a long
time. It's always nice coming back to your first love and thankfully
now I'm here."

Is this move the ideal motivation for you at this stage in your
career?

"It would be wrong to say that I wasn't motivated any where else but
obviously when a club of Liverpool's stature comes in for youÂ… I
think it's only normal that you should want to come to a club like
this and, obviously I am no different from any other player, but
because of my past playing for Liverpool, it means an awful lot more
to me than it would to any other player."

Can you be objective about what you feel you can provide for
Liverpool or what kind of state of fitness you are in?

"I have got to go off what the manager thinks and whatever the
manager says, goes. He can assess me on the training pitch. The
decision is ultimately down to the manager and nobody else."

Any word on Manchester City, because we hear that Stuart Pearce was
instrumental in this move...

"Yes, he has been very good. Once I was aware of Liverpool's
interest, I told Stuart Pearce and the Chief Executive at Man City
and they both looked in my eyes and instantly knew what I wanted.
With a lot of help from them and a lot of help from Mr Parry and Mr
Benitez, the move was made possible."

If you walk around Anfield at the moment, they say 'God' is back.
The people here seem overjoyed, have you had much contact from
people from around the area?

"Well, on Friday my phone never stopped, it was just red hot. Coming
back I sort of half-expected a little bit of publicity but the
amount of press coverage I've received and the people phoning into
the radio stations; it has been nothing short of magic and I am
very, very grateful for it."

Have you completely managed to forget about Round One? Obviously
walking out of here four years ago was very painful for you - has
all that gone now?

"Of course, it's all gone because I'm back here now. Obviously I was
sad to leave, but I'm back and it feels great. Now I have got other
things to look forward to like putting on the Red shirt again and
walking out of the tunnel will be something I'm really looking
forward to."

And plenty of familiar faces because there are a lot of people here
from four years ago...

"Yes but there are a lot of new players here as well and the manager
has spent well. No disrespect to the last time I was here but this
squad is a much better squad. I think any player coming in would be
very, very impressed looking around the dressing room and looking at
the players out on the training pitch.

The manager said that he feels you can help the club step up to the
next level. Do you feel that you have joined a club that is going in
that direction?

"Well, what they achieved last year was amazing and this year they
have had a fantastic record in terms of not conceding. If I can help
in any way at all by raising any one's performance or whatever, then
it is beneficial to me and to the club."

You said you were in Istanbul on that famous night. Did you feel any
regret that you had left all this behind?

"Well, that night I was just like any other Liverpool supporter in
that I wanted to be on the pitch. I thought that it was over at half-
time and I don't know what Mr Benitez said before the second-half,
but I'm looking forward to his team talks now and hopefully they can
have a similar effect on me."

How does it work in the dressing room? Have you got your old peg
back?

"No, I haven't. A lot of people have asked what number I will be but
I'm not really bothered about that. Numbers mean nothing to me; it's
the badge on the front that I care about and that's what means the
most.

Manchester United in the FA Cup. What do you think about that?

"That's a massive, massive game. All the lads will be delighted with
that draw and if you want to win competitions, you have to beat the
big teams so it doesn't really matter what round you beat them as
long as you do."

Walking out in front a load of photographers is not very emotional
but have you thought about what it is going to be like when you walk
out in front of the Kop?

"No, not really. I don't think I will really be able to until it
happens but I think when it does happen, I'll feel it."

Does it all feel natural? Does it feel like home again when you walk
out and see that 'This is Anfield' sign?

"It's actually a funny feeling at the moment because I'm not really
used to it again yet. I'm not normally a nervous lad but coming into
training on Saturday morning, I was a touch nervous and like I said
before, a kid on Christmas morning doesn't even come close to the
emotions that I was feeling."

What about your family and your mates? Did you discuss it with them?
And what do they think about you returning?

"Everyone is absolutely delighted for me but they have always wanted
me to come back. If I'm honest, I didn't ever think it would happen
but it's what they've been praying for and well. I'm here now, so
fingers crossed that I do well."

How clear are you in your own mind about what you want achieve this
time around?

"I don't think it's about what I personally want to achieve. It's
not about any individual player. The aim of anybody playing for
Liverpool is to win as many trophies as you can as a team and win as
many games as possible. The more games you win, the more trophies it
leads too."

You have only been given a six-month deal. Has anybody told you what
you have to do to secure a longer-term contract?

"No, nobody has told me what I have to do. I think I know myself
what I have to do. I know it's only a short-term deal but hopefully
I'm very, very good here and I would like to stay for as long as I
can. It's just solely down to me. If I perform well, then the
manager and Mr Parry will sit down and discuss my future. I'm not
getting carried away and I have got six months to prove myself. For
now, I just want to enjoy that time."

[Liverweb] Portsmouth FA Cup Match Report

The Reds went through to the next round of the FA Cup yesterday and
have today been handed a plumhome tie against Man united.

The match report from yesterday is here below

Liverweb FA Cup Match Report

Portsmouth 1 Liverpool 2

Liverpool : Reina, Kromkamp, Carragher, Hyypia, Warnock, Riise,
Alonso, Gerrard(C), Sissoko, Cisse, Morientes

Subs Used : Crouch for Morientes (72), Finnan for Gerrard (79),
Kewell for Cisse (82)

Subs Unused : Carson, Traore

Att : 17247

Ref : Phil Dowd

---------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------

The Reds went through to the next round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 win
at Portsmouth. The game was dull as dishwater but the Reds did
enough in the end to get through. Two goals up in the first half was
enough for the Reds to get through despite the home side pulling a
goal back in the second half.

The Reds handed a first start to Jan Kromkamp at right back whilst
Cisse partnered Morientes up front. Newly captured Robbie Fowler was
ineligible for the match and Scott Carson dropped to the bench.
Portsmouth started the match on what looked like a patchwork quilt
of a pitch. The grass had just been re-done and this was always
going to cut up.

The start of the game was a typical example of what was going to
carry on. The drums and whistle from the home crowd were annoying
and the football was boring. The first thing of any note that
happened took ten minutes and that was for Pericard to get a
booking. That card came when he went in heavily on Kromkamp. Two
minutes later and Hughes was booked when he followed through on
Carragher. A minute further on up at the Portsmouth end Vignal led
with his elbow in a challenge on Gerrard. Gerrard then refused
Vignal's handshake which resulted in a talking to from the ref.

On twenty minutes there was one of those great comedy moments when
Kromkamp took an amazing dive on the touchline. This at least woke
some people up. The game just wasn't going at all and you could be
forgiven if you fell asleep during this one. Neither side troubled
the keepers. The game though suddenly sprang in to life on thirty
five minutes when the Reds were awarded a penalty. Stefanovic was
adjudged to have deliberately handled the ball and referee Dowd
pointed to the spot. Steven Gerrard stepped up and put the penalty
away for a 1-0 lead.

Just four minutes later the Reds were two up thanks to John Arne
Riise. Riise was played through down the left hand side and from the
edge of the area struck a great left foot shot past Kiely and in to
the bottom corner of the net. The Reds could have had a third just
before half time but after Gerrard played a ball through it was just
too long for Morientes to reach before Kiely was out. Half time
though and it was relative easy street.

The Reds got the second half underway attacking the end with our own
fans in. It saw Portsmouth bring Todorov on and they changed shape a
little which did improve them a bit but the game was still as dull.

Portsmouth grabbed a goal back on fifty four minutes when Davis
headed a free kick in the net past Reina. Now it was game on or at
least should have been but even now the game just didn't seem to get
going at all. Portsmouth tried to come forward but the pitch was so
woeful that they couldn't play through us so tried to play over us
more which Hyypia and Carragher dealt with.

Stefanovic did go close with a free kick that went just over the bar
with ten minutes to go but that apart they had just about one scare
all game and that was when Todorov spun Hyypia before crossing into
the middle and Reina grabbed the ball at the second attempt after
nearly losing it. The Reds though went through after three extra
minutes had been played.

MotM : Jan Kromkamp - played well and consistently throughout the
game which will help keep pressure on Finnan at right back.

[Liverweb] Fowler Returns

Last night saw the amazing return of Robbie Fowler to Anfield. Rumours had
been doing the rounds all week but many had been written off as the usual
waffle of we know someone who knows someone. That same story that had gone
round every transfer window since God left.

But then last night it came true and the legend that is Robbie Fowler has
returned to Anfield. I have to say I'm excited by the return and think
he'll bag a few goals for us. For now the deal is for six months but
knowing Robbie he'll earn a longer term deal because with Robbie you get
goals and that is something we have been missing.

I've added in the old stats for Fowler now to the squad page. They make
great reading
330 games and 171 goals. In the league alone its 210 starts, 26 sub
appearances and a whopping 120 goals.

Fowler takes the vacant number 11 shirt. He is not eligible for the FA Cup
game at Portsmouth though but may make his second debut for the Reds
against Birmingham at Anfield on Wednesday night.
