[Liverweb] News and Reserves match Report

Luis Garcia has lost his appeak against the Red card the other
night. The FA have rejceted both Garcia and Mullan's appeal from
the respective clubs and they will miss the rest of their season now.

The Reds have launched a legal bid against Reebok for £7m in lost
revenue. After the club delayed the launch of the European kit due
to shirt sponsor problems Reebok witheld the money owed to the
Reds. The Reds have now issued a writ against the company to get
the money they had already budgeted for.

The Reserves were in action again last night and this time won
comfortably. The ever reliable Adam was at the Racecourse ground
and his report is below

Liverweb Match Report

Match Report courtesy of AdamS

Liverpool 4 West Bromwich Albion 0

Team: Martin, Barragan, Smith, Antwi, Roque, Peltier, Anderson (75,
Threlfall), Idrizaj, Calliste (67 Lindfield), Guthrie (77, Flynn),
Foy

Subs Used : Lindfield for Calliste (67), Threlfall for Anderson
(75), Flynn for Guthrie (77)

Subs Unused : Hobbs, Lancaster

Ref : K.Evans

After a disappointing 3-0 loss away to Aston Villa, Liverpool took
on their West Midland's neighbours West Brom at The Racecourse
tonight. They chose an attacking team with with two front men, two
wingers and an attacking midfielder and it paid dividends as they
produced their best performance of the season to romp to a
comfortable 4-0 victory. With Hobbs relegated to the bench for this
game Peltier was captain for the second to last home game of the
season.

Liverpool started brightly and nearly went ahead in the third
minute. Calliste was fouled after being put through into the left
channel by Guthrie. Guthrie was alive and took a quick free kick to
Foy who's powerful shot skimmed the post with the keeper not even
bothering to move.

The Reds didn't have to wait long to take the lead. A minute later
Idrizaj who has struggled to settle in to the team so far this year
picked the ball up and raced straight through the defence and beat
the keeper with aplomb. It seemed to mark Bez's arrival as he had by
far his best game for the club so far.

Liverpool went off the boil for a bit forcing Pako to get up from
the bench and yell to Guthrie "Daniel. Keep the ball. And pass.".
Guthrie (who seems to be a contestant for the world's whitest human)
seemed to take the words of wisdom on board as he put on a great
showing for the rest of the match.

Foy was again unlucky on 25 minutes shooting from a similar angle
and missing my a similar margin.

It took until the 32nd minute before West Brom had a chance. A
forward ball by Ibrahim Sissoko (yes he's the legend's younger
brother) caused confusion between Roque and Martin allowing Elvins
to nip in and shoot just wide. Martin seemed very nervey tonight
after a couple of mistake against Villa he looks to be a bit short
on confidence.

Just before the break Barragan nearly double the lead. He had bombed
forward more and more as the half went on, this time he went alone,
but inside on to his weaker left foot and let fly, missing only by
the smallest of margins.

Liverpool came out for the second half and were immediately back on
the front foot. Both Foy and Peltier having long range efforts in
the opening moments. This pressure told as in the 49th minute Foy
and Bez combined to slip Guthrie through. He looked to have been
muscled out of it but managed to get the tip of his toe on the ball,
diverting it around the keeper and into the net.

Liverpool put a game that was really already out of West Brom's
reach beyond doubt in the 56th minute. Calliste used his pace to
great effect to steam down the right wing and deliver a perfect
cross to Bez who had cleverly lost his marker. It was nothing less
than Bez had deserved and if his header from a corner late in the
first half had not come back of the bar he could well have been
celebrating a hatrick.

Lindfield was introduced in the 67th minute replacing Calliste and I
was reliably informed by the lad I watch the match with that he
would definitely score. With just five minute remaining some
excellent footall by Liverpool enabled Barragan time to cross from
the right. He found Lindfield in space at the back post but he
headed over when he really should have scored. I laughed at my
mate's prediction.

In the 86th minute he laughed at me as Threlfall fed Lindfield and
used pace and strength to brilliantly hold off the defender and beat
the keeper. It was a great piece of finishing to round of a cracking
performance. I hope we reproduce this on Sunday so I don't have to
witness the mancs celebrating winning the league.

MOM. It's hard to take it away from a lad who scored two goals and
played so well, but I'm afraid Bez loses out to Foy who put in the
best performance I've ever seen from the lad. He really caused them
problems all night.

[Liverweb] West Ham Match Report

Red Cards - Garcia and Mullins - violent conduct

---------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------

The Reds ran out two one winners at West Ham last night although the
win was marred by the late sendings off of Luis Garcia and Hayden
Mullins. Djibril Cisse struck twice for the Reds to earn maximum
points for the Reds and ensure they completed a league double over
the hammers ahead of the FA Cup final. The late sending off of the
two players was handbags at the very worst and lets hope the FA see
this and reduce any potential ban on the players.

The game was slightly late starting off because the pre-match build
up was handed over in honour of former Hammers boss John Lyall. A
number of former players turned up and the last words from Trevor
Brooking were that the fans should honour Lyall in the way the see
fit. That allowed fans to clap and sing his name which was a fitting
way of paying tribute to one of their true greats. It's a move
hopefully more clubs will follow in the future.

The Reds got the match underway and it was the Reds who were the
team in control of the game first. The side saw eight changes on the
night which saw a start for Djibril Cisse on the left hand side and
for much of the first half in particular he gave Ferdinand the run
around. Cisse had two shots within the first ten minutes of the
game. His first was deflected away for a corner whilst the second
was saved by the keeper. The Reds were the better side though and
Sissoko was being allowed to move forward far more in midfield with
Hamann behind him.

It was like the Cisse show in the early part of the game and on
eighteen minutes he got what he and the Reds deserved. A great shot
from the edge of the area flew past Walker into the bottom corner of
the net and the Reds were ahead. It was a great strike and showed
what Cisse can do when he's in the mood. It was stark contrast to
the weekend where he seemed to run away from the ball.

West Ham nearly struck back straight away but Benayoun forced Dudek
in to a save at his right post. On twenty five minutes the Reds had
a second goal but this one was chalked off. Morientes finished in
style but was adjudged to be offside. It seemed harsh as for me it
looked like it was a West Ham player who actually passed it to him.
The flag went up early though from the linesman. Four minutes later
and Fowler tried to lob Walker in the West Ham goal but his lob went
just over the bar.

West Ham just hadn't got in to the game but slowly settled down a
bit and on the half hour Traore was forced in to a great tackle to
save them breaking clear. The Reds were dominating midfield through
Sissoko mainly. Momo is in great form at the moment and breaking up
so much play it's superb. Just before half time Sissoko broke up the
play and went on a run down the left. He passed Ferdinand and then
crossed it in only to see the strikers sleeping and not thinking the
cross was coming.

West Ham finished the half really well and were starting to get up a
head of steam. Two minutes before the break they should have scored
as well. Ferdinand broke down his right wing and crossed in.
Sheringham met the cross superbly and headed past Dudek but in to
the side netting. It was a huge let off for the Reds and a warning
they should have learnt from. They didn't though and a minute later
Benayoun should have scored with a header. This time the cross came
from the left but Benayoun stooped down to head over the bar.

The Reds came out unchanged for the second half. West Ham brought
Fletcher on for Collins and carried on where they left off in the
first half. A minute in to the half and they were level. Morientes
failed to hold a clearance ball up and West ham countered against
the Reds. Zamora played a neat one two with Sheringham before
squaring to an un-marked Reo Coker who had the simple job of tapping
home.

The Reds hit back straight away and just three minutes in to the
half were so nearly level. Momo Sissoko danced down the left hand
side and flicked the ball inside. Morientes thundered the ball at
the goal only to see it hit the under side of the bar and get
cleared. A wonderful opportunity though. Five minutes later though
and the Reds were ahead again. Robbie Fowler hooked a superb ball
through for Cisse to race on to . He cut across one man before
slotting it home though the keepers legs. Cisse raced off and did a
somersault celebration before dreaming of a hat-trick.

The Reds were now back in control of the match and looking to march
onwards and upwards. Steve Finnan was subbed on sixty three minutes
to give him a rest. Sami Hyypia replaced him for his 250th
appearance for the Reds and he partnered Traore in the centre,
pushing Carragher to right back. Dudek was forced in to a save on
sixty six minutes when Etherington shot and Traore cleared the
danger.

West Ham did have a goal on seventy one minutes but like the Reds in
the first half the flag was up before the ball hit the net. Benayoun
was replaced by Harewood on seventy seven minutes and three minutes
later Garcia came on for Fowler. Garcia would last just over a
minute on the pitch. The game was played in good spirit throughout
and there was no bookings but all blew in to life on eighty minutes.

Garcia lost the ball in midfield and was trying to win it back off
Mullins. The players got tangled up together and as Garcia fought to
get free he threw his arms about. Mullins took exception to this and
pushed Garcia over. After all the players all came around and
jostled with one another Howard Webb called the two players over.
First Mullins went for raising his arms and then Garcia was sent off
for his part in the incident. Having seen this again later the ref
probably had to send them off according to the strict letter of the
law. It was particularly harsh on Garcia for me and if this stands
both players will miss the cup final.

In the final ten minutes the Reds had the chance to wrap the points
up when Cisse went clear. With just the keeper to beat though he hit
the keeper with his shot and then couldn't quite angle his body
properly to head the rebound in to the empty net. It would have sewn
the game up but as it happens West ham still had something to aim
for. Carragher was forced in to drastic defending on eighty four
minutes after Ferdinand had danced his way down the right and
crossed. From the resultant corner Scaloni hit a shot from twenty
yards just over Dudek's goal.

After three added minutes the Ref ended the contest and the Reds
could at last celebrate a win in London. It's been over a year in
coming but this was a deserved win on the night. It keeps up the
pressure on second place at least and more importantly keeps us on a
winning level as the season draws to a close.

MotM : Momo Sissoko - had an awesome game breaking everything up in
the midfield and even making some great forward runs. The scary
thing is that Momo can only get better as well. Cisse also played
well and showed that he can be a player who the opposition fear at
times.

[Liverweb] Latest News

Steven Gerrard has been voted the Players Player of the Year. Gerrard
received the trophy last night at the award ceremony and beat off
competition from Terry, Lampard, Rooney, Henry and Cole.

Gerrard was also in the Premiership team of the season and was joined
by Jamie Carragher in there as well.

The Reds will meet West ham United in the FA Cup Final on May 13th.
The Hammers beat Middlesboro 1-0 yesterday at Villa Park.

The result will probably mean that the Reds will get their usual end
at Cardiff for the final.

The referee has already been picked to be Mike Dean.

In the rumour mill - Pascal Chimbonda is an alleged target for the
Reds this summer. The Wigan defender has claimed taht the Reds and
also Man United are watching him.

Daniele Bonera has issued a come and get me plea to the Reds for the
summer saying that joining Liverpool is an experience he would like to
try.

One other linked target was Phillipe Mexes of Roma but he has said
that he wishes to stay at Roma next season.

The Reds deservedly went through to the FA Cup final with a more
than convincing two one win over Chelsea. A full Old Trafford ground
saw the two sides go head to head for a fifth time this season. The
atmosphere was upped before the game and the pressure was really on.

The Reds defended the end with their own fans in during the first
half and kicked off. Chelsea lined up with a very narrow formation
and the first thoughts as you sat their were that we could get at
their back line using the full width of the pitch. With a player
like Harry Kewell on the pitch for the Reds we had a perfect man for
the job as well. On five minutes Kewell did attack his man only to
see his cross go just to far in front of Crouch and Garcia.

At the other end a couple of minutes later Hyypia nearly set up
Crespo but the Reds managed to clear for a corner from which Drogba
headed wide of the goal. On thirteen minutes the Reds nearly scored
through Alonso. His cross-shot with pace nearly had Cudicini beaten.
One touch either way would probably have done the trick but Cudicini
managed to deflect the ball away to safety.

The Reds were the better side and dominating the midfield by using
good width and trying to get Kewell on the ball whenever possible.
On eighteen minutes though the Reds really should have gone behind
when Drogba came back from an offside position to get on to a ball.
With only Reina to beat he somehow spooned the ball wide and he
became a laughing stock in front of the travelling Kop.

The Reds took the lead minutes after the Drogba chance and it was
well deserved as well. The Reds were awarded a free kick on the edge
of the area as Terry lunged with studs showing towards Garcia. It
was a lucky free kick but you take what you get like that. John Arne
Riise rolled the ball to Gerrard who stopped it and Riise then bent
the ball through the wall and in to the back of the net. A great
goal for the Reds and they were away.

The Reds went from strength to strength with the goal. Harry Kewell
picked the ball up on the right hand side on twenty six minutes and
ran at his man. He took him on and cut inside the box but his low
shot failed to trouble the keeper.

On thirty four minutes the Reds had another opportunity. This time
it was thanks to a loose back header from Terry which gave Crouch a
chance to challenge the keeper. Both men collided but as Terry
cleared the ball both men stayed down and needed treatment. For some
reason Crouch had to go off the pitch to come back on at this point.
Someone explain this rule when in this instance a man from both
sides goes down and just because one is a keeper he stays on but the
other goes off.

The Reds continued to dominate the play and look the side more
likely to score a second than Chelsea equalise. On forty one minutes
Chelsea conceded a free kick on the left side as Geremi stood on
Alonso. The game seemed to be simmering just below boiling point for
a time as Chelsea seemed to think the whole world was against them.

In first half stoppage time Garcia really should have doubled the
Reds' lead. Kewell found himself in acres of space again and put in
a deep cross to the back post. Gerrard took the ball down and after
taking on Del Horno pulled the ball back for Garcia but the Spaniard
skied his shot way over the bar.

The half time interval saw one Chelsea change with Del Horno staying
off the pitch and Arjen the diver Robben coming on. Chelsea got the
game underway again as the Reds looked to build on their lead. The
fear was that non stop pressure would come the Reds' way now but it
didn't materialise straight away. The Reds continued to be the
better side.

That said Chelsea did have the ball in the net on forty nine
minutes. Arjen Robben whipped in a superb free kick which John Terry
headed in at the back post. However Graham poll was quick to
disallow the goal for climbing on Riise and in fairness Terry didn't
complain too much.

On fifty three minutes the Reds converted their dominance to a
second goal. Steve Finnan took a throw from just inside his own
half. Two Chelsea headers later and Garcia was on a free run to
goal. Just as Terry closed in Garcia hit an absolute pearler to send
the Reds into cup final heaven.

The Reds went from strength to strength now and forced Chelsea in to
all the right moves to get them back in to it. On the hour mark
Kewell broke down the left and chipped a ball for Garcia on the edge
of the box. Garcia lashed a volley on target but Cudicini put it
round for a corner.

Chelsea were quick to make the changes and Cole and Duff soon
replaced Geremi and Crespo. The move did finally give some impetus
to the Blues but the two goal cushion was good for the Reds to have.
On sixty eight minutes Robben went on a great run where he took on
three Reds before shooting straight at Reina. It was a warning sign
though. The Reds then brought on Cisse for Crouch as the Reds looked
to use the players pace on the counter.

Chelsea got a foot hold back in to the game on seventy minutes as
Drogba headed a goal which was so avoidable. Riise headed a cross
straight up in to the air where Reina tried to stretch to but missed
and Drogba headed in to the empty net. Now it was certainly game on.

Chelsea now threw everything at the Reds. We just didn't get hold of
the ball enough for a period but in all the time Reina was rarely
called in to exceptional play. The Reds were forced in to another
change on seventy six minutes when Kewell went down injured. Kewell
hobbled off with the physio but the Reds' change wasn't quite ready.
A minute later and Traore came on to restore the eleven-a-side.

Jose Reina picked up a yellow card on eighty minutes when he was
adjudged to have time wasted - which was probably right. Morientes
came on for the last nine minutes in place of Garcia to freshen
things up and did more in that time then Cisse did in all his time
avoiding the ball.

On eighty seven minutes the Reds were temporarily down to nine men
as Sissoko went down injured. He limped off with the physio and
Gerard followed suit with cramp. The Reds though were soon back to
full strength again.

There were five minutes of added time at the end of the game but for
all that time Chelsea created one golden chance. In the final minute
Joe Cole found himself free in the area just eight yards out only to
lash his shot over the bar.

As the final whistle blew the Reds all raced down to the Reds fans
and celebrated another trip to Cardiff. Some of them were there for
the first cup final in Cardiff and some will return for the last one
as well. A great win and one that the Reds well and truly deserved.

MotM : Harry Kewell - took advantage of the space given to him and
showed his great potential going forward. Hyypia and Carragher were
there usual rocks at the back and Sissoko again broke up so much of
the play.
