BENITEZ FRUSTRATED BY DRAW

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez spelt out his frustration after his side
failed to make the most of their first-half dominance in today's 1-1
Barclays Premiership draw at Aston Villa.

The Reds went ahead through Harry Kewell's first league goal for 10 months
and then had numerous opportunities to secure only their second away win of
the campaign.

But Villa levelled with a Nolberto Solano free-kick - his fourth goal in
four consecutive home games - and held on for a draw.

Benitez said: "It is frustrating because it is very difficult to play
better than we did in the first half when we had a lot of clear chances and
were only level.

"In the second half Villa kept the ball more often but we still had
opportunities to have won the game.

"Today we improved our level of performance away from home and we played in
the opening half at the same level as against Arsenal. But you need to
score to win games."

Benitez felt that Jamie Carragher had not fouled Gavin McCann - later
substituted with a knee problem - in the build-up to to Villa's equaliser.

He said: "For me it is not a free-kick. I want to see it on the TV but in
the context of the whole game the free-kick is not important.

"It is more important we play well and we had eight to 10 chances. It is
important to win when you do that."

Steven Gerrard was outstanding in a free role behind Neil Mellor although
Benitez was reluctant to single him out for praise.

He said: "I don't like to talk about one player only but Steven is playing
well and he got into the box in good positions on one or two occasions. But
you cannot play well if the team is not playing well around you."

Villa manager David O'Leary was relieved to earn a share of the spoils
after his side's first-half mauling.

He said: "I'm doing head-stands over getting a point. I thought in the
first half we got totally out of gaol and were outclassed.

"I was worried all week because I thought Gerrard, [Xabi] Alonso and
[Dietmar] Hamann would all be in midfield and that could be a bit of a
mismatch in that department.

"We couldn't live with the quality in the first half and they should have
scored more goals in the first half.

"They were able to almost walk the ball in the net for their goal and then
we scored from a free-kick which is about all we did in the first half.

"In the second half it was more even in every way. To dig in during the
second half was a plus point and I also thought the young lad Steven Davis
did particularly well in midfield particularly considering the company he
was in."

O'Leary was fulsome in his praise for Gerrard and said: "I joked to him,
'don't you think you should come off and save yourself for the Champions
League on Wednesday.'

"Gerrard had that licence to break forward and he is one of those certain
players that makes the players around him play even better.

"I think when Gerrard is in the team they are a lot better and their
players know that and are delighted to have him in there - and just imagine
what he would have been like had he gone to Chelsea."

PA Sport, 4 Dec 2004
Aston Villa 1 Liverpool 1

Nolberto Solano struck for the fourth successive home game to rescue Aston
Villa's unbeaten home record after they had been outclassed for long
periods by Liverpool.

The Peruvian international converted a trademark free-kick to earn a
Barclays Premiership point although Liverpool were convinced that Jamie
Carragher had not fouled Gavin McCann on the edge of the box.

That cancelled out Harry Kewell's first league goal for 10 months after his
former Leeds boss David O'Leary had described his form as "indifferent" in
the build-up to the game.

The first half saw Liverpool totally overrun the home side and produce some
of their best football away from Anfield this season.

Their slick passing and one-touch football had O'Leary's side chasing
shadows and only some fine saves by Thomas Sorensen kept them in the hunt.

Steven Gerrard showed his class with an all-action performance and he
revelled in a free role behind lone central striker Neil Mellor.

The Reds should have wrapped up their second away win of the campaign by
the interval and Solano's superb strike was a hammer blow.

The visitors still had more of the possession in the second period but
Villa did pose more of a threat with Solano impressing and rookie Steven
Davis making more of an impression.

Liverpool dominated from the first whistle and Villa skipper Olof Mellberg
put in an important tackle on Mellor as he prepared to shoot after Gerrard
had turned a right-wing cross from Steve Finnan into his path.

Villa were chasing shadows and John Arne Riise burst forward and fired in a
powerful shot from 20 yards which contained plenty of power but flew
straight at Sorensen.

It came as no surprise when after 17 minutes Kewell put Liverpool ahead
after Mellberg was adjudged to have brought down Dietmar Hamann.

The resulting free-kick was floated to the far post by Gerrard and
Carragher got up well to turn the ball back across goal where Kewell headed
home from close range.

It needed a fine save by Sorensen to prevent Mellor from doubling their
lead after 23 minutes. Jlloyd Samuel was caught in possession by Antonio
Nunez who found Hamann in acres of space on the right. His cross picked out
Mellor but his volley was turned around the post at full stretch away to
his left by Sorensen.

Gerrard then made a perfectly-timed run to meet a fine weighted centre to
the far post from Xabi Alonso but he was unable to keep his volley down.

Villa striker Carlton Cole was substituted and replaced after 36 minutes by
Luke Moore but Liverpool continued to dominate.

Sorensen knew little about a thumping drive from Gerrard which rebounded to
safety off his chest after the England player had cut in from the left.

It was totally against the run of play when Villa got back on level terms
after Carragher was adjudged to have brought down McCann.

Up stepped Solano and his free-kick left Chris Kirkland stranded as it
curled into the corner of the net.

Rafael Benitez opted to make a half-time substitution, taking off Nunez and
replacing him with the fit-again Josemi.

Sorensen again earned his spurs when he parried away a dipping free-kick
from Gerrard after Gareth Barry had handled some 20 yards out.

Gerrard was continuing to be a huge influence on proceedings and it needed
a last-ditch tackle from Mark Delaney to halt him as he prepared to shoot
after linking up well with Kewell.

Benitez made his second switch just after the hour mark with Djimi Traore
coming on for Mellor - and Kewell moving up front.

Kewell laid on an opportunity for Gerrard whose thumping drive was clung
onto above his head by Sorensen.

Solano's set plays were posing Villa's biggest threat and another free-kick
was tipped over the bar at full stretch by Kirkland.

Gerrard left the field to a standing ovation with eight minutes remaining,
no doubt disappointed that his performance had yielded only one point for
his side.

RAFAEL BENITEZ'S FIRST AGM SPEECH IN FULL
By Paul Eaton

For the first time since arriving at Anfield manager Rafael Benitez
addressed the club's shareholders during last night's AGM. Here's his
speech in its entirety.

"Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Although I've been in Liverpool now for
nearly six months, this is my first opportunity to speak to the
shareholders. To start with, I want to thank you for the way you have made
me, my family and staff feel so welcome since we arrived in England.

"Liverpool is one of the great names of European football and I saw how
special Anfield was during my visits here with Valencia. But to actually
stand on the touchline as Liverpool manager and hear the fans behind your
team is a fantastic experience. I'm proud and privileged to be working here
and want to say a few words on why I came to Liverpool and my plans for the
future.

"I enjoyed some great successes with Valencia over the past three years and
have many happy memories. But Liverpool is a huge club with fantastic
support and I was excited by the challenge of bringing back honours to
Anfield. I was aware of the reputation of the club, but that was an
inspiration, not a burden to me.
Great things have been achieved here in the past and I'm hungry to repeat
that in the future. I feel confident we can, because the stable structure
of the club allows me to focus on football.

"When I was first able to sit down with David Moores and Rick Parry to
discuss the job, I understood these were responsible people undertaking a
serious project. We spoke honestly about the size of the challenge we faced
and the resources at our disposal. Both the strength of the squad and the
financial realities we would be operating under.

"But what has struck me as a Spanish manager operating in England is how
everyone at the club respects you and supports you. They always want the
best for you and the team. The kind of people I am now working with at
Liverpool - from the Chairman and Board of Directors down - give me total
confidence in this new project I have undertaken. This club exists to win
trophies. It's what the great managers here have done before me and I'm
determined to do the same. The target is obviously the Premier League
title, but I am not going to make promises about timescales.

"My idea is to prepare the squad to win trophies and play good football.
That means instilling a winning mentality. That will be the foundation
stone for the future progress we make. It is easy when you win, but we need
to be as strong when we lose. We are fighting against clubs with greater
resources than us, so we need everyone - the Board, the staff, the players
and the supporters to be fighting together.

"Our target is always to win the next game and worry about the League table
at the end of the season. We know what we have to do and how we intend to
do it and I am confident we will achieve success.

"But success does not just come from spending huge amounts of money. Hard
work, proper planning and good coaching are very important. The players
need to understand that they must always play as a team for the good of the
team.

"We also need to ensure that good young players are being developed and
brought through the ranks and I'm pleased so many of them have had the
chance to show what they can do in the Carling Cup this season. I was proud
of them last night at Spurs. We will continue to work closely with Steve
Heighway and his staff at the Academy to make sure the young players have
the best possible chance to succeed.

"Always we want to do things in the right way. The performance against
Arsenal in the first half was a reference point and the atmosphere in the
ground incredible. When you do things right, then everyone connected to the
club - those who work here and the supporters everywhere are happy.

"I understand the level of expectation here and fully accept it. I wouldn't
want it any other way, which is why I am here for the long term. It will
take time and patience will be needed, but I believe we have already made
progress this season. However, our work has only just begun.

"Thank you for your support."

DUO BACK FOR REDS

Liverpool will have full-backs Josemi and Djimi Traore back in their squad
for the trip to Aston Villa.

Both suffered injuries in Champions League defeat in Monaco a fortnight
ago, but Spanish defender Josemi's head wound has now healed and the French
left-back has recovered from an ankle problem.

Igor Biscan suffered a leg injury in the Carling Cup win at Tottenham in
midweek and is out of contention, while Milan Baros has begun ball work
after his hamstring trouble and is in line to return for Wednesday's
European home tie with Olympiakos.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa's rookie midfielder Steven Davis will make his
second start for the club against Liverpool.

The Northern Ireland Under-21 international impressed in his other
performance in the starting XI against Tottenham last month.

Davis will be given another opportunity as Villa manager David O'Leary will
be without Lee Hendrie and Thomas Hitzlsperger.

Hendrie is starting a three-match ban after his sending-off against
Manchester City while Hitzlsperger is ruled out with a thigh strain.

Liverpool Daily Post, 3 Dec 2004
Hamann set to be offered new deal
By Andy Hunter, Daily Post

DIETMAR HAMANN will be offered the chance to extend his Anfield career in
the New Year - and has told Liverpool he is willing to stay.

The in-form midfielder is one of several high-profile players out of
contract at the end of this season and eligible to talk to foreign clubs
from January 1.

But Liverpool have now begun negotiations over a new deal for the
influential 31-year-old and are confident the German international will
commit his future to the club.

Hamann has appeared in every Premiership game under Rafael Benitez this
season and the Liverpool manager has told the midfielder and his agent he
remains in his Anfield rebuilding plans.

"I talked with Hamann and his agent two months ago," revealed Benitez. "The
idea was to talk to him and his agents as soon as possible again to see
what is best for the player and the club.

"The question is when. I am very happy with him and we will talk soon, but
now is not the right time.

"I don't think he will leave, and he has indicated to me that he wants to
stay here.

"All managers would want a player like him. He is a great professional and
does a great job for us."

Hamann has become an integral figure at Liverpool since his £8m arrival
from Newcastle in July 1999.

His importance has been underlined again this season when Steven Gerrard
was ruled out for two months through injury.

The length of a new deal is still to be decided, with Liverpool unlikely to
offer long-term deals to players of Hamann's age and contractual situation.
But a compromise two-year deal could see the former Bayern Munich extend
his successful stay on Merseyside before the end of the season.

"I will talk to the club in January and then discuss things with my wife
before making any final decision," said Hamann.

[lfc-news] Moores shows strain as Reds air 'dirty linen' - Echo

Liverpool Echo, 3 Dec 2004
Moores shows strain as Reds air 'dirty linen'
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

THE unshakeable feeling following Liverpool's 112th AGM is that the reign
of chairman David Moores is nearing an end.

Emotional and distressed, at one point during a fiery meeting it seemed
Moores was ready to resign on the spot.

But shareholders must also have experienced deja vu.

Moores made similar comments last January as the pressure of leading
Liverpool clearly took its toll.

He managed to ride the storm then, and until the investment issues at
Anfield are fully resolved, Moores will remain in control.

Rival Steve Morgan stressed it was not his intention to let the club "wash
its dirty linen" in public, but by the time he spoke Anfield's Centenary
Stand was already resembling a launderette.

"It has been a difficult year and I have got to consider my options. I love
this club dearly but I cannot compete with Mr Morgan's millions," said Moores.

"These past 12 months have not been easy. I have got nothing against Mr
Morgan personally. We are looking at all roads to get investment into this
club and as far as I am concerned I am still considering Mr Morgan's offer.

"Perhaps it is time now . . . " Pausing to compose himself, he added: "It
has been unbearable, it is affecting my family and we have all tried to do
everything in the best interests of the club.

"At the end of the meeting I will have to come to a decision one way or the
other."

Liverpool revealed a fresh approach 'as good as a formal offer' was
currently under consideration from Morgan.

Chief executive Rick Parry also said the club is analysing a new investment
offer from an unnamed group, but stressed it was not the L4 American-based
consortium led by Mike Jeffries and Stuart Ford.

Jefferies and Ford are rumoured to have recruited Liverpool legend Kenny
Dalglish to support their bid, but have yet to make an offer.

Tensions rose when Morgan's wife, Didy, criticised board members for the
delay in reacting to her husband's offer.

"My husband has spent £300,000 in legal fees this year trying to put money
into Liverpool Football Club," she said.

"The response to his offers has just been slow and intolerable. It seems as
if a deal would be done with the devil himself rather than with my husband.

"Here is a local, successful businessman willing to put millions into this
club. He has behaved impeccably and tried his hardest to put his own money
into the club yet we are still waiting by the phone and receiving
incredibly sluggish responses.

"It is quite tiresome I can't understand it. Only tonight we hear there is
someone else trying to invest and yet we have someone here in this room who
is willing to invest."

Morgan then spoke for the first time, insisting he wanted to "draw a line"
under his battle with the chairman.

"I had no idea my wife was going to get up and speak tonight but I am very
proud of her," he said..

"You can see on the chair-man's face he has endured a lot of anguish over
the last 12 months. I do not like washing our dirty linen in public, it is
not good for this football club. I want to draw a line and move forward.

"I can assure the chairman and directors they don't need a first-class
ticket to Thailand to find new investment - I am only 20 miles down the road.

"They can have the money in the bank by Christmas and Rafa (Benitez) can
have the money he desperately needs and we can get the stadium on the go.
Please accept my offer."

Board member Terry Smith then provoked Morgan into a further statement by
claiming he wished "his own wife was here to speak on his behalf" while
stating the original bid "wasn't worth the £70m claimed".

"We have received four offers in total from Mr Morgan. All of them have
been at different prices," he said..

"I don't want people leaving this room tonight believing we have turned
down a £70m investment because that is entirely incorrect. These offers
have been very different to what has been presented in public.

"The first offer valued the club at a fraction of what it is worth. All of
them involved Mr Morgan taking control the next day and that hasn't come
out in any press conference.

"We are bound by confidentiality so cannot go into the full details but I
would ask Mr Morgan to nail the myth that £70m is coming into the club."

Morgan retaliated: "I tried to do this the nice way.

"The reason £70m is not coming into this club is because shareholders don't
want £70m coming into the club. They want £35m for the club and £35m for
the cost of their shares. My first offer was for £70m, there have been
others since.

"I am trying to be constructive, I have put various offers forward in
various guises, but you are not being constructive at all.

"I would never break the confidentiality agreement but we know there is a
lot more and people would be appalled if they knew the situation.

"There are massively escalating costs of the stadium - the figures are
nothing like what has been reported. The board should come clean. Then
people will know why I had to revise my offer."

Listening quietly to all this was manager Benitez, who sat alongside Parry
waiting to present his own report.

One shareholder summed up the feelings of the room after the meeting.

"The last thing we needed was for our new manager to witness all that," he
said.

Building costs rise

THE cost of building a new Stanley Park stadium has risen £35m in the last
year.

Liverpool anticipated they would pay £80m when the scheme was presented at
the AGM a year ago.

Last night, the club announced it will now cost an estimated £115m.

"The issue is not cost, it's affordability," said Rick Parry, who stressed
the importance of the NWDA grant application.

Shareholders voted unanimously against a groundshare with Everton.

'Gullible board'

LIVERPOOL were accused of being 'gullible' in allowing the sale of Michael
Owen to Real Madrid for just £8m.

One shareholder said the club had lost a £25m windfall in the deal,
claiming those responsible should "fall on their sword".

Rick Parry responded: "I'm responsible so hand me a sword. Michael decided
to go and with one year left on his contract we were left with little option.

"There were no other bidders for Michael. We decided to get the best deal
there was."

Liverpool Echo, 3 Dec 2004
LFC in talks over huge money deal
By Chris Bascombe & John Thompson, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL Football Club today insisted it would not be hurried over a major
new investment approach worth millions of pounds.

The approach from a mystery source was revealed last night at the club's
highly-charged AGM.

Reds multi- millionaire shareholder Steve Morgan today urged Liverpool to
seal the deal with the mystery new bidder - if it's in the best interests
of the club.

After almost a year of turmoil and speculation over Liverpool's ownership
and finances he said: "For the proud name of Liverpool Football Club this
has to come to an end."

Chief executive Rick Parry today stressed Liverpool won't be rushed into a
decision on the current proposals.

There has been speculation that the mystery backing comes from the Middle
East or China but Mr Parry said: "We are working on it but we won't put a
timescale on anything.

" We have several proposals to evaluate, and while we'd obviously like
things to be resolved as soon as possible, it was never a question of
trying to reach an agreement before the AGM. We will continue pursuing the
different options."

Reds chairman David Moores agreed again to consider his own position last
night and said he would have to make a decision soon.

Liverpool have stressed the new interest declared last night does not come
from the L4 Group.

Steve Morgan, whose offer remains on the table, said today: "If this other
offer is in the best interests of Liverpool FC and does bring wealth and
more money then they should do that.

"I want Liverpool to be in the right hands.

"I happen to think I am the right hands for it but if there is someone else
who can bring more to the party they should do it. But one thing they
cannot do is drag it on.

"For the proud name of this club, and for its dignity, we should end this
very quickly."

Liverpool Daily Post, 3 Dec 2004
Positive news at last for Owens
Academy football with Chris Wright, Daily Post

DEFENDERS Jordan Holmes and Adam Hitchen make their return after injury as
Liverpool under-18s aim to come back after the break with a victory at
Stoke City tomorrow (kickoff 11am).

John Owens has been in a similar situation to first-team manager Rafael
Benitez in that he has had to cope with several long-term injuries and a
smaller-than-usual squad.

But the return of England youth international Holmes and Hitchen this
weekend, both of whom will make their first appearance of the season, is a
positive sign.

Both players will play 45 minutes tomorrow as they look to regain full
match fitness ahead of the FA Youth Cup third round tie against Wealdstone
which will now be played at Anfield on Tuesday, December 21.

Owens said: "We have had a similar spate of long-term injuries as the first
team.

"It is a bit awkward for the players because they are meant to be starting
their career as a footballer and suddenly that is taken away from them.

"So it is good to get two players back and hopefully they can come back
into the game at Stoke."

Liverpool will hope to continue their recent improved form against Stoke.
Although they were beaten in their last game before last weekend's
in-service training weekend break, the performance was good.

Owens said: "We had a practice game on Saturday, so we did have game
although it wasn't official. It was the U16s and U18s mixed together.

"It kept the sequence of games going.

"But we are looking to build on the performances we have had. We had a good
game at Crewe and I felt we should have won that."

Apart from long-term injury victims Peltier, Mark Roberts (knee) and
Francis Smith (foot), Owens has a full squad to choose from.

Liverpool Echo, 2 Dec 2004
'Better than beating Arsenal'
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

PENALTY HERO Florent Sinama-Pongolle says last night's Carling Cup win over
Spurs 'felt even better' than the Arsenal victory at the weekend.

The 20-year-old striker slotted home an extra-time spot kick and kept his
cool to score the decider in the shoot-out which took Liverpool into a
semi-final showdown with Watford.

Sinama believes manager Rafa Benitez will keep faith in his young guns for
the remainder of the competition.

"I feel unbelievable. I'm numb," said the youngster.

"The first penalty was special because I looked up at the clock and saw
there were only three minutes left. I thought 'Oh my God'. But I had
confidence I could score, which is why I took the ball.

"With the second one, I'm thinking to myself 'how can I be facing the same
situation twice in 10 minutes?'.

"Before I kicked the ball I could see Robinson move to the side I was going
to put the ball, so I changed my mind and put it the other side.

"I wanted so much to win as part of this young team. I'm so happy for
everyone because we worked so hard. It's the highlight of my Liverpool
career so far.

Sinama could have won the game earlier had he been allowed a one-on-one
with Paul Robinson.

He was amazed Anthony Gardner wasn't dismissed for a professional foul on
77 minutes.

"I don't like judging referees but when I see this happen, I can't
understand it," said Sinama.

"The referee knows a red card was deserved. The rules are clear."

Another star performer, Zak Whitbread, said the sense of fear some of the
young side would never get another chance to play for the club was an
inspirational factor in their second half transformation.

"The boss said we never know how many more minutes we'll get this season or
if there are other games left for us," said Whitbread. "All of us knew we
were on the back foot but we started to play a lot more football and we
worked our socks off.

"It was hectic in the first half but we took the pressure well. The manager
gave us a talking to at half-time but we came out second half with great
courage and resilience. It paid off.

"I can't explain how delighted we are. For it to happen to us all together
is like a dream come true.

"They created a lot of chances, but we came back strong. Now we're already
thinking we want to move on and make sure we beat Watford. I hope the
gaffer sticks with us."

Meanwhile, the Reds have expressed an interest in bringing Ivan Campo to
Anfield as defensive cover.

The ex Real Madrid star is targeted as part of a deal which might see on
loan striker El-Hadji Diouf remain at Bolton.

Liverpool do not want the controversial Senegalese international back.

Liverpool Echo, 2 Dec 2004
Ground sharing deadline looms
By Scott Mcleod and Ian Hernon, Liverpool Echo

EVERTON and Liverpool are expected to abandon discussions on a shared
stadium before the end of the year.

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright and chief executive Keith Wyness met
yesterday with Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry, sports minister
Richard Caborn and the regional development agency chairman Bryan Gray in
London.

No agreement could be reached over a groundshare but both clubs have agreed
to have one more meeting before making a definitive decision by the end of
December.

However, there now seems little chance of the two clubs sharing a home,
with Everton making it clear they will not entertain the idea unless
ownership is a 50/50 split.

Liverpool are keen to continue with plans for Stanley Park, having planning
permission for a 60,000-seater stadium.

With costs rising from an estimated £80m to £110m, the Reds have applied
for a Northwest Development Agency grant.

The NWDA prefers the idea of shared stadium to benefit the whole community,
hence the recent meetings.

Kenwright said: "Everton are not interested in the slightest in renting
from Liverpool. We ' re not interested in sharing their stadium, we are
discussing a joint stadium.

Wyness added: "It was an exploratory meeting and the groundshare option is
one of several under review by the club."

The sports minister is keen on a shared stadium but has not offered
government help.

He said: "It was a very interesting meeting. A number of things have been
explored and it is now down to the clubs to make a decision on what they
want to do.

"I am very hopeful they will do that before the end of the year."

A possible groundshare could delay the Stanley Park project for another two
years, as the planning application may have to be resubmitted if both teams
would be playing their home games there.

[lfc-news] Cisse: Horror injury nearly cost me my leg - Post

Liverpool Daily Post, 2 Dec 2004
Cisse: Horror injury nearly cost me my leg
By Paul Walker, Daily Post

FRENCH striker Djibril Cisse has revealed he could have lost his left leg
in the aftermath of the horrific injury which wrecked his first season at
Liverpool.

Cisse was carried off with a double fracture of his leg after a tackle in
the Barclays Premiership match at Blackburn on October 30 - and will not
play again this season.

And the £14million signing from Auxerre claims his whole career could have
been destroyed and that had he not had expert medical treatment at Ewood
Park, there was the prospect of amputation.

Cisse, in an interview with club magazine LFC, said: "When I was taken from
the field, what they did next was so important for my career, what they did
in those first few moments was vital.

"My bone were overlapping and I had no circulation in my foot."

And the 23-year-old insists: "They had to give me drugs to help with the
pain and then they had to pull my bones back into place with their hands.

"If they had waited until I had got to the hospital I might have lost my
leg, it was that serious."

Cisse is still on crutches but is back at Liverpool's training ground
having daily treatment and has told manager Rafael Benitez he has set a
target of being able to play in the final few games of the season.

But he is clearly very aware of the debt he owes to Liverpool's medical
team for their swift action at the ground when he was first injured.

"It was a bad injury but I think I have been lucky in many ways. If the
bone had gone through my leg then my football was finished for me. I could
not have come back after that. That's why I can say that I am very lucky.

"I know some people could not watch what happened to them again but I
watched what happened to me at Blackburn straight after the operation. I am
a strong person and I wanted to see what really happened.

"I did not hear a crack or anything when it happened but Milan Baros, who
was closest to me at the time, said he heard it. Actually, I did hear a
noise, but I thought it was my shinpad snapping.

"At first I tried to get up from it straight away, because I was not in
pain but I felt something funny in my leg and I decided that it was best
just to lie where I was on the pitch and wait for the medical people to get
to me."

Meanwhile, fellow injured Liverpool striker Baros is hoping to play a part
in his side's crucial Champions League Group A match against Olympiakos
next week.

The Czech Republic forward suffered a hamstring injury while on
international duty against Macedonia last month but took part in light
training on Monday before stepping up his fitness further yesterday.

"It was almost like I was fully training. And the leg is okay," said Baros.

"On Friday I will train again with the team. I want to play in the
Champions League against Olympiakos on Wednesday," the top goalscorer at
Euro 2004 continued.

"I had a little tear in the femoral muscle, it bled and later stiffened.

This stiffened blood caused problems with the muscle.

"In Macedonia the same happened to me again as had happened a few days
before in La Coruna. Only this was a bit worse."

The 23-year-old admits he has been frustrated at having to watch from the
sidelines and is desperate to get back out on the pitch.

"I am fed up with it. I am looking forward to playing again. I would like
to help my team, we need to beat Olympiakos to stay in the Champions League.

"The muscle is okay, I do not feel any problems. If I had even a little
doubt, I would not be eager to play."

[lfc-news] Benitez: Stars may be back for semi final - PA

PA Sport, 1 Dec 2004
STARS MAY BE BACK FOR SEMI-FINAL

Victorious Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez refused to rule out bringing
back his top players for the Carling Cup semi-final against Watford.

Benitez's Liverpool kids earned a place in the last four with a 4-3 penalty
shoot-out win over Spurs at White Hart Lane.

Jermain Defoe put the home side ahead in extra-time only for Frederic
Kanoute to handle four minutes from time.

Florent Sinama Pongolle converted the penalty to take the game to a
shoot-out and the same player scored the winning spot-kick after Kanoute
and Michael Brown had missed for Spurs.

Benitez was full of praise for his kids but added that he would wait and
see how fit his first-team players were when the semi-finals are due to be
played in January.

"We have a lot of tired players and we will wait and see nearer the time,"
he said.

"It depends on the players at the time of the games but I still have the
same idea as when I arrived. My priorities are the Premier League,
Champions League, FA Cup and Carling Cup.

"I don't want to win the Carling Cup and finish 10th in the Premiership. I
want to finish in the top four and win more things."

Benitez was delighted with the spirit shown by his kids, particularly in
the penalty shoot-out.

He added: "I was not surprised. For the future of the club it is important
to have young players playing this kind of game. It will give them more
experience and they will remember this situation."

Benitez was also pleased with Pongolle's contribution from the penalty
spot. Liverpool are in the midst of a striker crises but Pongolle's two
penalties will give Benitez more options.

He added: "It was important for him to score. Against Arsenal Neil Mellor
played well and now Pongolle has scored two important goals. It gives me
more options in attack now."

Beaten Spurs coach Martin Jol will forgive striker Kanoute but blamed him
for the defeat.

Jol could not understand why his striker handled the ball four minutes from
the end of extra-time with Spurs leading 1-0 and then was not cool enough
to convert his spot-kick in the shoot-out.

Jol said: "The defeat hurts but I still cannot understand why he did it.
There was no pressure on him. How can you handle it?

"Fredi is too disappointed. But he knows he should not do it.

"We have to move on because we need Fredi. Of course, it is not
unforgivable but Fredi has to go on. It cost us dearly.

"At every club there is a person like that but I can't believe we are still
doing those sort of things.

"He was not cool with his penalty. It is about coolness. But I know Fredi
and in training he is always scoring penalties."

Failure to take their chances, and Spurs had numerous ones to finish off
Liverpool, was also a problem for Jol.

"We should have been two or three up. We did not punish them. In the
first-half everybody could see there was no problem for us. They played a
lot of youngsters but we did not finish our chances. We punish ourselves
all the time. the difference between success and failure is too thin."

PA Sport, 1 Dec 2004
Tottenham 1 Liverpool 1 (AET - 3-4 on pens)

A moment of lunacy four minutes from the end of extra-time from Frederic
Kanoute cost Tottenham a place in the Carling Cup semi-final as Liverpool's
reserves stole the most unlikely of victories at White Hart Lane.

Jermain Defoe gave Spurs the lead their dominance - if not their finishing
- had deserved after 107 minutes of wasted chances, only for Kanoute to
inexplicably handle a harmless cross in his own box.

Florent Sinama-Pongolle swept home the spot-kick and forced a tie that
Tottenham should have comfortably ended in normal time into the lottery of
a penalty shoot-out.

With the scores tied at 2-2, Kanoute was then the first player to miss for
Tottenham and though Darren Potter had his effort saved by home goalkeeper
Paul Robinson, Michael Brown gave Liverpool the advantage when he skied his
effort over the crossbar.

And it was left to Sinama-Pongolle, the 20-year-old, to fire his penalty to
Robinson's left - the opposite corner to his extra-time spot-kick - and
propel Liverpool into a semi-final clash with Watford.

In truth it was little more than Tottenham deserved. They had spent all of
normal time wasting a glut of chances, with Rohan Ricketts and Robbie Keane
the chief culprits.

Liverpool's reserves clung on force extra-time and the longer Tottenham
went without scoring and the more possession they squandered, the brighter
Rafael Benitez's youngsters grew.

The Spaniard brought in Zak Whitbread, Stephen Warnock and David Raven
alongside Stephan Henchoz in an inexperienced defence which was nearly
breached after just five minutes.

Reto Ziegler picked out Kanoute in the box and the Mali international
turned on a sixpence, only for his shot to deflect off the crossbar and
into the stand.

The chances were coming thick and fast for Tottenham but Kanoute scuffed a
volley wide and Ziegler should have done better than to fire into the
side-netting.

Kanoute then turned provider from the right, finding Ricketts unmarked in
the centre of the Liverpool box with a perfect cross but his header was
glanced horribly wide.

Liverpool were gaining heart from their own stubborn resistance but could
do little to stem the tide, surviving only through Tottenham's impotence in
the final third.

When Ziegler whipped over a low cross from Tottenham's sixth corner of the
half all it needed was a touch. None came.

It fell to Robbie Keane at the far post but he was denied by the first of
two brilliant reflex saves from the swiftly advancing Jerzy Dudek.

When the players emerged for the second half, little had changed. Keane hit
the side-netting with an open goal gaping - the worst miss of the lot - and
when Kanoute presented the Republic of Ireland striker with a chance to
make amends five minutes later, Dudek somehow tipped his volley over the
crossbar.

Defoe, who had been sat watching on the bench, was sent to warm up down the
touchline. Head coach Martin Jol had seen enough and the England striker
was introduced for Ricketts with 25 minutes remaining.

Defoe was given little chance to shine as Tottenham remained sloppy in
possession and they were beginning to tread a fine line - wasteful up front
as Liverpool increasingly tested them at the back.

With 11 minutes remaining Anthony Gardner was lucky to escape a red card
when, as the last man back, he virtually rugby tackled Sinama-Pongolle to
the ground.

Liverpool, furious at referee Neale Barry, responded best and when the
whistle blew for extra-time, it was Tottenham who were clinging on. The
White Hart Lane crowd responded with a chorus of boos.

John Welsh, a second-half replacement for Neil Mellor, shaved the outside
of the post at one end before Raven, making his first start, produced a
perfectly-timed tackle to stop a charging Defoe.

After the turnaround, when Kanoute picked out Defoe, the game was seemingly
won. But Kanoute then gifted Liverpool a chance to level from the spot, and
ultimately win the match in the same manner.

Liverpool Daily Post, 1 Dec 2004
Benitez leaves 'tired' Gerrard out of plans
By Ian Doyle, Daily Post Staff

STEVEN GERRARD will be absent as Liverpool attempt to move a step nearer a
third Carling Cup final appearance in four years this evening.

Rafael Benitez's side travelled to Tottenham Hotspur for their
quarter-final tie without their talismanic skipper, who will instead remain
at Melwood for extra training as he strives for full fitness following his
recovery from two months sidelined with a broken metatarsal.

With Liverpool approaching an important period of four games in 10 days -
which includes their decisive Champions League game with Olympiakos and
Premiership encounters at Aston Villa and Everton and at home to Portsmouth
- Benitez has decided not to overburden Gerrard so soon after his return.

"There are no problems with his injury but it is more about whether he
becomes tired," said the Liverpool manager. "Another game would have been
good for him as we need him to be fit and at a better level for the games
against Aston Villa and Olympiakos.

"But I have to get the right balance between how much he trains and how
much he plays because we have a lot of important games coming up and we
need him to be fit.

"All the players want to play and Steven always wants to play but we must
do what is the best for him and what is the best for the team, not just for
this game but the whole season."

Since returning on November 20, Gerrard made a second-half substitute
appearance at Middlesbrough and played 90 minutes at Monaco before
producing a man-of-the-match display against Arsenal on Sunday.

"It has not surprised me how well he has done since returning," added
Benitez. "He has been training very well and he just needed to get a few
games now.

"Steven played very well against Arsenal and we used Alonso and Hamann
working hard behind him. Steven worked very hard between the lines of
attack and midfield while Neil Mellor kept the centre-backs of Arsenal busy."

While Gerrard misses out, another player returning from injury, Antonio
Nunez, is expected to be handed a start this evening.

The Spaniard's appearance from the bench against Arsenal at the weekend was
his first since injuring his knee during his first training session
following his move from Real Madrid in August.

"Nunez has been out for three to four months, so he needs time," said
Benitez. "He can give us more possibilities, but he is not in the best
physical condition at the moment.

"He may not be a galactico but he gives us another option.

"We did not have a true winger in the squad but now we can choose him.

"He needs to play now."

Benitez is otherwise expected to largely keep faith in the mixture of
youngsters and fringe players who have defeated Millwall and Middlesbrough
in previous rounds as they aim to emulate the Liverpool teams of 2001 and
2003 who went on to lift the trophy at Cardiff.

[lfc-news] Bolton consider cut-price Diouf - Guardian

The Guardian, 1 Dec 2004
Bolton consider cut-price Diouf
By Dominic Fifield

Bolton Wanderers will attempt to negotiate a cut-price deal with Liverpool
to complete the transfer of El Hadji Diouf during next month's transfer
window despite the Senegal striker being given a three-match ban for
spitting at an opponent.

The improper conduct charge, admitted by the 23-year-old, was laid by the
Football Association yesterday after television cameras caught him spitting
in the Portsmouth captain Arjan de Zeeuw's face during Saturday's 1-0
defeat at the Reebok Stadium.

But Bolton officials have been privately impressed by Diouf's reaction to
the misdemeanour and by his displays since joining on loan in August.
Gérard Houllier paid Lens £10m for the striker just before the 2002 World
Cup - a tournament in which he excelled - on a five-year contract worth
£30,000 a week but he scored only six goals in 80 appearances. Liverpool
have still to complete the payment of that transfer fee and are paying a
proportion of his wages over the course of his season-long loan at the Reebok.

Bolton may attempt to extend that wage agreement over the remaining years
of Diouf's contract and hope a nominal fee will secure his signature.

Diouf will be banned from the Premiership games with Everton, Norwich and
Manchester City. The fact that he has admitted the charge means the case
will not be referred to a disciplinary commission.

He has also issued a public apology to De Zeeuw, accepted the maximum
permitted fine of two weeks' wages imposed by Bolton and promised to clean
up his act. He has been equally apologetic to his team-mates.

Bolton will refer him to an in-house sports psychologist, aware that
spitting has been a recurrent problem. Police on Teesside are investigating
claims that he spat a drink at an 11-year-old fan during Bolton's visit to
Middlesbrough on November 7 and he was fined for spitting at a Celtic fan
during a Uefa Cup tie in Glasgow in 2002.

"At this moment there is no possibility that Diouf will return," said
Liverpool's manager Rafael Benítez. "We have very good strikers and I am
thinking only of my own strikers. He is playing at Bolton now and is not my
player."

Liverpool Daily Post, 30 Nov 2004
Anfield passion scared Arsenal into submission
By Mark Lawrenson, Daily Post

LIKE everyone else at Anfield, I felt privileged to be in attendance for
one of the great games of the season on Sunday. Passion, pace, attacking
verve, fantastic goals - it had it all, but one performance stood out for me.

It came from the supporters and they created an atmosphere I hadn't heard
at Anfield for a long time. Right from the first whistle, Anfield was like
a colosseum and you could sense everyone was urging the Liverpool players
to have a real go at Arsenal and get into them.

It is to the players' credit they did just that. Obviously Rafael Benitez
had instructed them to be aggressive and with the encouragement from the
stands, they really got stuck in.

That's one thing about Arsenal. They are a fantastic team, but if there is
a weakness it is that they can be knocked out of their stride by commitment.

On Sunday you could see the likes of Robert Pires, Thierry Henry, Jose
Antonio Reyes and Cesc Fabregas were hurdling tackles and were constantly
on edge wondering where the next challenge was going to come in from.

Of course, being aggressive in defence is only half the battle, but
Benitez's masterplan of playing Harry Kewell, Steven Gerrard and Florent
Sinama-Pongolle in front of Xabi Alonso and Dietmar Hamann worked brilliantly.

Hamann did what he does best in stopping Arsenal's attacks, while Alonso
could have found his best position as a deep-lying playmaker.

It means he is very difficult to pick up and with his range of passing
skills, he is able to put the ball on a plate for the front-running
striker, in this case Neil Mellor.

He also has the freedom to get forward himself with the German sitting
back, as shown by one of the goals of the season.

Ahead of them, Sinama-Pongolle worked hard on the right and helped to
stifle Ashley Cole's forward momentum, while Harry Kewell also worked his
socks off, and when you are struggling for form, you can't ask any more
than that.

Steven Gerrard was simply magnificent and he will thrive thanks to Benitez
giving him licence to attack the opposition from all over the pitch.

He terrorised Arsenal on Sunday and they won't be the first team to fall
under his strength of will.

No disrespect to Mellor - who worked tirelessly and deserved his goal - but
when Milan Baros returns or Benitez brings in another striker in January,
Gerrard will have even more of an impact.

As for Mellor, I still believe he is no more than a good squad player.

His movement is good and he is a good finisher, but unfortunately for him
he lacks that extra bit of pace to get him away from defenders.

I played with his dad Ian when I was at Brighton and he was quick, but Neil
hasn't inherited that. Without that I feel you have to be an exceptional
player with a true footballing brain to make the grade - like Teddy
Sheringham or Kenny Dalglish. I don't think he possesses that, but I would
be delighted if he proves me wrong.

Evans the people person can prove his coaching prowess with Wales

THE first game I played at Anfield was for Preston Reserves when I was just 17.

Despite a brilliant display by me at centre-back - which I say in the
knowledge not too many people would have been at the game - we had five put
past us that day by a team managed by Roy Evans and with John Toshack up front.

I can remember thinking how young Roy was to be looking after a team, but
he was an impressive coach then and he continued to impress me during my
time with Liverpool.

Now he has joined Tosh in charge of the Welsh team, I think he will do a
tremendous job there too.

The great thing about Roy during his time at Liverpool is that he was
always the players' confidante.

Whereas Ronnie Moran was the sergeant-major, Roy could be relied upon to
offer a sympathetic ear, the good cop to Ronnie's bad cop.

I can see him fulfilling that role for Tosh now, because he is a people
person who is good at getting to know the players and offering them an
outlet if they want to talk.

Liverpool Daily Post, 30 Nov 2004
Tycoon still keen on role at LFC

FILM producer Mike Jefferies has said he still wants to play a role in the
future development of Liverpool Football Club, despite having a move to
inject money into the club rejected in the summer.

The Woolton-born entrepreneur was speaking at a conference in Dubai, which
LFC chief executive Rick Parry was also attending, a fact sure to increase
speculation about a possible deal with Liverpool's AGM due to be held on
Thursday.

In fact, Mr Parry missed the visit of champions Arsenal to Anfield on
Sunday because he was away on "company business".

Speaking at Dubai's Soccerex football business forum, Mr Jefferies said: "I
wasn't trying to take over at Liverpool, I was trying to get together a
consortium, and still am, to turn the club around."

Mr Jefferies is a long-time supporter of the Anfield club.

He and fellow Liverpudlian Stuart Ford, a former senior executive at film
giant Miramax, initially made their interest in investing known a few
months ago.

They have always insisted they would only act with the blessing of current
chairman David Moores.

Mr Jefferies said: "One of the most depressing things for me was going to
meet Liverpool, where I think the amount of income being generated is
somewhat lacking. I think things might need to change."

LIverpool Echo, 30 Nov 2004
Milan eyes up a Derby return
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

MILAN BAROS returned to training today with next week's Champions League
group decider against Olympiakos in his sights.

The Czech striker has started running again at Melwood, and manager Rafa
Benitez hasn't ruled out the chances of a comeback in the make-or-break
European clash next week.

However, the Merseyside derby on December 11 is a more realistic target.

"Baros has started running again and he could be ready to play in eight
days," said Benitez.

"If everything is ok, there is a chance. I know Milan is thinking about the
Olympiakos match. That's the game he has in his mind to come back.

"It will be good for us if he can make that, but we will have to wait and
see. I don't want to use him too early and risk losing him for another two
months."

Benitez is mulling over whether to rest Neil Mellor for tomorrow night's
Carling Cup clash with Spurs, although the goal hero will travel with the
rest of the squad to London.

With only one recognised goalscorer left, the boss is wary of risking the
youngster.

"If we lose another forward, it will make life even more difficult for us,"
said the boss.

However, Antonio Nunez will make his first start at White Hart Lane and
Steven Gerrard may play alongside the Academy youngsters in a bid to gain
more match fitness.

"Gerrard could play in the game. I will check his physical condition," said
Benitez.

"If he has no problems, I think it may be better he plays rather than stays
here and trains. That will help him more than training at this moment. We
need him at his fittest as quickly as possible so this match could help."

Liverpool Echo, 29 Nov 2004
Mellor out to stay a Red
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

NEIL MELLOR brought himself back down to earth following the greatest
moment of his career by confessing: "I'll be happy to go back to the
reserves if it means proving myself at Liverpool."

The 22-year-old couldn't contain his delight at scoring the goal which
could transform both his reputation and his club's season.

After recent interest from Sheffield United, Mellor admits he may not have
been around to enjoy a starring role in a memorable victory if it wasn't
for Liverpool's injury crisis.

The problems faced by Djibril Cisse and Milan Baros opened the door for the
youngster, and a late double in the Carling Cup against Middlesbrough
offered the first genuine evidence to Rafa Benitez there was a solution to
the problems.

Having taken his opportunity in such dramatic fashion, Mellor is determined
to make yesterday the first of many Premiership highlights for the Reds.

"You never know what can happen to you in football. You can be the hero one
week and out the next. I've enjoyed my time at Liverpool and this goal
peaks everything," said Mellor today.

"I definitely want to stay and prove myself to the gaffer. If that means
going back to the reserves I'll be prepared to do that. I don't want to
leave, that's for sure.

"In football there are a lot of ifs and buts. I scored those goals against
Middlesbrough in the Carling Cup and that made sure I was playing
yesterday. If I hadn't done that, who knows? Maybe I wouldn't still be here.

"The gaffer has shown his faith in me by playing me against Arsenal, but
there are still aspects of my game I need to improve.

"I felt I let myself down in certain parts of the game yesterday but I
persisted and kept getting in the right areas. I feel I was rewarded for
that. A goal like that won't do me any harm. It's well known we have our
striker problems, but I feel I've done my best."

Mellor's last second strike was a fitting finale to a dominant Liverpool
performance. The youngster feels justice was done, although he didn't think
he had enough energy left to score such a beauty.

"I was absolutely knackered at the time and just before I scored I was
thinking I wanted the referee to blow the whistle," he admitted.

"Other players might have tried to have a run at the defender but I was too
tired for that. I just spotted a bit of room to the keeper's right and
placed it there.

"It was a fantastic feeling to see the ball hit the back of the net. The
next thing I knew Steve Warnock was jumping on me and I was getting elbowed
in the face by everyone. To come up trumps in the last second is special.

"We made Arsenal look a very ordinary side. We dominated the first half and
although they came back in the second, they never looked as if they'd win
the game.

"The only thing I was gutted about after the game was I'd left the pitch
when the crowd started singing my name, so I didn't hear it. The fans have
been brilliant to me."

[lfc-news] Midnight oil a slow burn for Benítez - Observer

--------------------------------------------------------------------~->

The Observer, 27 Nov 2004
Midnight oil a slow burn for Benítez
Being below Everton in the table is the least of Liverpool's problems, says
Paul Wilson

The Everton supporter who contacted a radio phone-in show last weekend and
cheekily referred to Liverpool's new manager as Rafael Beneath-us
accurately reflected the fact that disbelief this season extends right
across Merseyside.

Everton were the team expected to struggle and anyone in conversation with
David Moyes around August would have been left in no doubt of the
desperation surrounding the club. Liverpool were ushering in a new era,
confident in Rafael Benítez's ability to add some of Valencia's strength
and vitality to an already strong squad that had finished fourth the
previous season. No one imagined Everton would be going into December
eyeing the Champions League while Liverpool would be limping to defeats
away to Middlesbrough and Monaco and wishing the transfer window would open
a month early.

Today's visit of Arsenal gives Liverpool the chance to restore some pride
and convince their supporters that all is not lost, yet so pallid have been
the past two performances that a third defeat in a row is a distinct
possibility. That would increase the pressure on Benítez, who is not just
battling against cruel injury luck and plummeting confidence but facing
criticism over the insipid nature of some of the football produced this season.

Liverpudlians no longer expect to win everything in sight and have not done
for some years. Nor do they expect a foreign manager to be an instant
success or a magnet for the best young players in Europe. They will put up
with quite a lot at Anfield these days, and have done, but they will not
accept Liverpool being insipid. Especially at a time when Everton are
riding high simply by virtue - or so it seems - of rolling up their sleeves.

'Monaco had not won for eight games before Tuesday,' says Tommy Smith, who
watches both teams on Merseyside. 'They should have been the ones lacking
confidence. Liverpool did not have their strongest strikers playing, but
the injury plight has cast a cloud over the whole squad. They should look
at the position across the park. When Wayne Rooney left, the rest of the
Blues squad got together and showed everyone that one man doesn't make a team.'

For Rooney read Michael Owen. Liverpool have been unlucky to lose Djibril
Cissé, Milan Baros and Luis García at the same time, but it must also be
remembered that Owen, Emile Heskey and El Hadji Diouf were allowed to leave
in the summer. Many people commented over the previous couple of seasons
that Liverpool would be an ordinary team without Owen, and unconvincing
captures such as Harry Kewell, Steve Finnan and Djimi Traoré seem to be
doing their best to prove it. At least Antonio Núñez, who arrived at
Anfield as part of the Owen deal, came through a midweek reserve match
unscathed to provide Benítez with another option.

With Steven Gerrard back and Xabi Alonso available after being rested in
Monaco, however, midfielder Núñez is likely to start on the bench today.
Liverpool are well off for midfielders; strikers are what they desperately
need, as Arsène Wenger wryly notes. 'It's amazing,' the Arsenal manager
says. 'They have been losing striker after striker, we have been losing one
midfielder after another.' Perhaps not as amazing as all that, given that
almost everyone at Arsenal plays in midfield. Thierry Henry, who is a
striker, however deeply he is deployed, remains Arsenal's biggest doubt.

Benitez admits that Liverpool's problems keep him awake at night. 'If I
have something on my mind, and I certainly have at the moment, I often get
up at three or four in the morning and do an hour's work,' he says. 'You
can think clearly and concentrate at that time and when I return to bed I
sleep. It's much better than tossing and turning in bed because that just
keeps my wife awake as well.'

Benítez claims that these small-hours brainstorming sessions are
productive; Liverpool's most recent performances suggest otherwise. 'If you
lose your two main strikers, all the other things change,' he says, not
unreasonably. 'Only time can sort that out, and hard work. If you are
working properly, nor mally you will win, but if you have problems it might
take time. I cannot promise we will win the next match, or the match after
that, but I can make sure we are properly prepared.

Wenger acknowledges that Arsenal have hit a dip in form, too, and believes
that the result could have great significance. 'These games tend to be key
and a win could have a big impact on the season for both clubs,' he says.
'We have had two or three really flat games, but sometimes people forget
nobody has beaten us, except Manchester United in special circumstances. I
don't think we will be flat at Anfield.'

Neither will Gerrard. The Liverpool captain is still returning to full
fitness, but there is nothing wrong with his competitive spirit. 'Things
are difficult for us now, so we've got to show some courage,' he argues.
'You either go hiding or you show a bit of character. The manager is the
same. He's been really unlucky with injuries, but he's told us not to think
about them. He's not looking for excuses.'

Liverpool: Kirkland; Finnan, Carragher, Hyypia, Riise; Hamann, Gerrard,
Alonso, Kewell, Warnock; Mellor.

Arsenal: Lehmann; Lauren, Cole, Touré, Campbell; Fabregas, Vieira, Pires,
Ljungberg; Henry, Bergkamp.

Referee: A Wiley.
