Milan eyes up a Derby return
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

MILAN BAROS returned to training today with next week's Champions League
group decider against Olympiakos in his sights.

The Czech striker has started running again at Melwood, and manager Rafa
Benitez hasn't ruled out the chances of a comeback in the make-or-break
European clash next week.

However, the Merseyside derby on December 11 is a more realistic target.

"Baros has started running again and he could be ready to play in eight
days," said Benitez.

"If everything is ok, there is a chance. I know Milan is thinking about the
Olympiakos match. That's the game he has in his mind to come back.

"It will be good for us if he can make that, but we will have to wait and
see. I don't want to use him too early and risk losing him for another two
months."

Benitez is mulling over whether to rest Neil Mellor for tomorrow night's
Carling Cup clash with Spurs, although the goal hero will travel with the
rest of the squad to London.

With only one recognised goalscorer left, the boss is wary of risking the
youngster.

"If we lose another forward, it will make life even more difficult for us,"
said the boss.

However, Antonio Nunez will make his first start at White Hart Lane and
Steven Gerrard may play alongside the Academy youngsters in a bid to gain
more match fitness.

"Gerrard could play in the game. I will check his physical condition," said
Benitez.

"If he has no problems, I think it may be better he plays rather than stays
here and trains. That will help him more than training at this moment. We
need him at his fittest as quickly as possible so this match could help."
