Crystal Palace 1 Liverpool 0

Rafael Benitez will demand a huge improvement from his Liverpool side if
they are to overcome Chelsea in the Champions League semi-final
following this defeat by relegation-threatened Crystal Palace.

Andrew Johnson's 35th-minute goal was enough to give Palace three vital
points in their fight to beat the drop, but Benitez will face an inquest
over his decision to rest key players Xabi Alonso, who was not even on
the bench, and John Arne Riise, who came on only as a second-half
substitute.

Liverpool missed the chance to close the gap on Everton - who could only
draw 1-1 at home to Birmingham - in the race to qualify for next
season's Champions League.

But credit must go to Palace for their excellent attitude, for their
work-rate and for the superb performances of Johnson, defender Fitz Hall
and midfielder Michael Hughes.

Mindful of his side's match at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, Benitez
made four changes to his starting line-up.

Skipper Steven Gerrard was brought back into the side along with Anthony
Le Tallec, Mauricio Pellegrino and John Welsh.

Spaniard Luis Garcia missed out with a thigh injury, while his
compatriot Alonso was rested along with Igor Biscan and Riise.

Palace boss Iain Dowie also made four changes, with Danny Granville,
Tony Popovic, Aki Riihilahti and Tom Soares recalled.

Although Liverpool settled into the game better than their hosts, it was
Palace who created the first chance.

Wayne Routledge swung over a free-kick from the left that was met by
Popovic, whose close-range header was tipped over the bar by Jerzy Dudek
in the 10th minute.

Four minutes later, Riihilahti won the ball from Fernando Morientes but
unwittingly fed Milan Baros inside the Palace area. But luckily for the
home side, Hall was able to dispossess the Czech Republic striker and
the danger passed.

Dudek was almost made to look ridiculous in the 25th minute. The Polish
goalkeeper dallied on the ball and Johnson bore down on him, but Dudek
just managed to evade the England international.

Two minutes later, Hall played a superb crossfield pass to release
Johnson, whose clever reverse ball found Granville, but the left-back
could not find the finish to match his run and Dudek saved easily.

At the other end, Le Tallec found Baros with a clever pass, but Gonzalo
Sorondo was alert to the danger and made a perfectly-timed tackle for
Palace.

The home side took the lead in the 35th minute. Jamie Carragher headed
Granville's cross clear, but when Routledge volleyed the ball back into
the danger zone from the right it was Johnson who reacted quickest to
head the ball into Dudek's bottom-right corner.

Palace began the second half as dynamically as they had ended the first,
and Liverpool were lucky not to fall further behind.

Sami Hyypia and Pellegrino made a hash of Johnson's low cross from the
right, but Soares - perhaps surprised that the ball had reached him -
shot high and wide at the far post.

In the 47th minute, Dudek failed to claim Routledge's left-wing corner
and when Riihilahti fired the ball back in from the right, Granville was
unfortunate to see his effort fall straight to Dudek.

Three minutes later, Soares' right-wing cross was headed clear to the
excellent Michael Hughes, whose 25-yard volley went just wide of the
right post.

After Morientes' header had been saved easily by Gabor Kiraly, Reds boss
Benitez sent on Riise for Pellegrino and Liverpool switched to a 4-4-2
formation.

After a quiet first half, Gerrard's influence grew as his side came
forward in search of an equaliser.

The England midfielder showed his ability with a clever pass for
Morientes in the 71st minute, and the Spain striker was denied only by a
superb intervention from Popovic.

Eight minutes later, a raking pass from Gerrard picked out substitute
Djibril Cisse on the right corner of the box, but the Frenchman's volley
was saved comfortably.

Liverpool were dominating possession, but lacked a cutting edge. A
minute after Dudek had to be sharp to claim the ball from Johnson at the
other end, Cisse latched onto a mistake by Popovic but his shot was
stopped by Kiraly once more.

Kiraly then kept his side in front with a fantastic save from Gerrard's
well-struck effort from 20 yards following Morientes' knock-down.

GARCIA WORRY FOR LIVERPOOL

Luis Garcia (thigh) is Liverpool's only injury concern for their
Barclays Premiership clash against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

The attacking midfielder sustained the injury during Wednesday's 2-1
victory at Portsmouth where he scored the winner, his 12th of the season
for the Anfield club.

Boss Rafael Benitez is expected to restore skipper Steven Gerrard to the
starting line-up after resting him to the bench for the Fratton Park
match to protect a groin problem.

Gerrard's return would mean Xabi Alonso being rested with next week's
Champions League clash with Chelsea in mind.

Italian striker Nicola Ventola could be a surprise inclusion for Crystal
Palace, seven months after breaking his leg.

Defender Darren Powell has recovered from flu and is likely to start,
but midfielder Mikele Leigertwood (hamstring) is a doubt.

Long-term absentees Emmerson Boyce (foot) and striker Tommy Black (leg)
remain sidelined.

Crystal Palace (from): Kiraly, Butterfield, Sorondo, Powell, Borrowdale,
Routledge, Hughes, Riihilahti, Kolkka, Johnson, Freedman, Speroni,

Liverpool (from): Dudek, Finnan, Carragher, Hyypia, Pellegrino, Traore,

HEARTS TRIAL REDS YOUNGSTER SEMMY
By Mark Platt

Jon Otsemobor has this week been training with Scottish Premier Division
side Hearts of Midlothian in the hope of possibly making a permanent
move to Tynecastle.

The young Liverpool defender has found his first team opportunities
limited under Rafael Benitez and spent the early part of this season on
loan at Crewe Alexandra.

A graduate of the club's Academy and a one time England youth
international, Otsemobor broke into the Reds first team during the
managerial reign of Gerard Houllier.

In total he has made six senior appearances, making his debut in a
League Cup tie against Southampton in 2002 and performing impressively
whenever called upon.

As well as a loan spell with Crewe, Semmy has also enjoyed a successful
time at Hull City and a brief stint with Bolton Wanderers.

Since returning to Anfield from Gresty Road in January, the Speke-born
22-year old has appeared on the bench just once, for the infamous FA Cup
defeat against Burnley. With his contract due to expire in the summer it
is unclear what the future holds.

Hearts boss John Robertson says: "Jon was recommended to us and he is
here for a few days so we can have a look at him."

Liverpool Echo, 22 April 2005
Rule out those lazy hazy days, of summer
EXCLUSIVE by Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

THE Liverpool squad's reward if they reach the Champions League final is
the briefest summer holiday in Anfield history.

Rafa Benitez has told his players he'll expect them to report back for
pre-season training on June 27.

With the European Cup final held in Istanbul on May 25, victory over
Chelsea would leave just over a month off in between the end of this
campaign and the beginning of stage two of Benitez's rebuilding programme.

For a number of the England stars, such as Jamie Carragher and Steven
Gerrard, the rest will be even shorter.

They're due to participate in an energy sapping, meaningless tour of
America on international duty at the start of June, unless they can
acquire the same convenient doctor's note as the Manchester United
contingent before boarding the plane.

Benitez's decision to rip up the traditional pre-season schedule comes
as no suprise. The football obsessed manager has no time for the closed
season and expects his playing staff to be chomping at the bit after
their summer break.

The new strategy is a further show of intent as he stamps his authority
on a club undergoing a fundamental change in culture under his command.

It's understood the Spanish boss was less than impressed with the
fitness levels when he took over last July.

Many of the players he inherited were on international duty at Euro 2004
at the time, but the fringe members of the squad required an intensive
physical conditioning course, which Benitez hopes to render unnecessary
this summer.

By ending the closed season for his players two weeks earlier than
usual, Benitez has revealed he's already meticulously planning ahead for
a vast improvement next term.

The current campaign is destined to end in dramatic fashion, regardless
of the destiny of Liverpool's domestic and European hopes, but Benitez
insists he must always keep one eye on the future.

"We've told the players our idea is to start pre-season on June 27 at
Melwood," explained the coach..

"We will spend some time there and then head for another country. We are
thinking of heading to Switzerland for a training camp.

"We need to train harder at the start and change the culture of
pre-season here. If we sign new players after June 27, they will have to
start afresh.

"But I want all the players to show the right mentality from the very
beginning of pre-season and this will make it easier for them throughout
the rest of the year.

"I'm sure you will see a fitter, stronger Liverpool next season."

It's not only the fitness levels Benitez believes will improve. The last
three fixtures have exposed the style of football Benitez intends to
become the blueprint for the rest of reign.

Xabi Alonso's return has been crucial to a more attractive game, but the
manager is relishing finally having selection dilemmas in all areas of
the park, not just in midfield.

"When you see the kind of performance against Portsmouth, you can see
what's possible when you have a lot of options in your squad," says Benitez.

"It makes it a lot easier for me. I'm sure we would have performed a lot
better throughout the season had we had the same number of players
available.

"It's true the season may be ending at the wrong time for us. Now we are
starting to do things properly. The team has a lot more confidence, but
the problem has been the same all season.

"When you only have a limited number of players in certain positions,
and they must play every week, it's harder to maintain the kind of tempo
we want in our style of play.

"I have a lot of confidence for next season. I know the English league
better and I know exactly the kind of players we need to improve. I also
hope we won't have as many injury problems next season as we've had this
time."

For all the optimism ahead of next year, there's still good reason to be
hopeful about the last month of the current campaign.

Liverpool begin an 11-day period which may determine whether Benitez's
debut is labelled an extraordinary success, or merely an encouraging start.

The pursuit of fourth is firmly in someone else's hands, but Liverpool
are ready to pounce on any mistakes.

"We will fight until the last game and we're not giving up," said Benitez.

"Our spirit is as good now as it's been all season."

Time for action on Champions League conundrum
By David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

WHILE the Everton and Liverpool juggernauts career relentlessly on
towards a Champions League collision, the FA have adopted their usual
stance, heads down, oblivious or unconcerned by what's going on under
their noses.

Liverpool are now just three draws and a couple of successful penalty
shoot-outs away from becoming European champions.

Everton's stunning defeat of Manchester United has left them favourites
for fourth place in the Premiership - which gives the FA's chief
executive, dyed-in-the-wool Kopite Brian Barwick, a head-splitting dilemma.

Which club would represent the Premiership in the Champions League next
season?

The answer, surely, must be BOTH.

Now I do have some sympathy with the FA on this issue.

Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

But they are not helping themselves.

Rather than meet the problem head on, they are sitting tight like a
rabbit transfixed by headlights, hoping it doesn't happen.

They could always offer to make representations to UEFA now, citing the
special circumstances of Everton's unfair expulsion from Champions
League football in 1985 and 1987 and, even if they are beaten, at least
have shown a willingness to ensure that justice was belatedly done.

Or they could just cross their fingers and toes and hope for: a) Chelsea
to win the Champions League semi-final or b) Bolton or Liverpool to
finish fourth.

Neither paints them in a particularly impressive light here on Merseyside.

Liverpool aim to finish on a high
Academy Football with Chris Wright, Daily Post

LIVERPOOL under-18s look to complete their FA Premier Academy League
season on a high with victory at Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow (kick-off
11am).

Although John Owens's side will finish bottom of Group C, the final few
weeks have given promise of a brighter year to come in September.

Many of the schoolboy players, from Dave Shannon's U16s, who will be
full-time next season have been playing over the past few weeks in
Owens's side and performing with credit.

And with two wins and two draws in their last five Liverpool are in
their best run of form.

Owens said: "It is a shame the season is finishing. Sometimes it just
needs something to happen to get you on a good run. A win, even if it is
a 1-0, builds confidence.

"We have one game left so at least we want to end the season in a
positive manner.

"It was nice to win the final game here (at home), and we just want to
do the same in the final game of the season."

Liverpool go into the final match with a host of injury worries. The
five long-term injury victims are still out. And last week Danny
O'Donnell, Danny Guthrie and Conal Platt missed the win over Barnsley.

Centre-back O'Donnell played for the reserves and is available, and
Owens is hopeful striker Platt can also feature. Midfielder Guthrie is
out with an ankle injury.

Owens added: "All three have been influential, so last week we had
centre-back, centre-midfield and striker all out. But the young lads who
came in did well."

Liverpool Echo, 22 April 2005
Euro anguish for Hamann
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

DIDI HAMANN has been ruled out of Liverpool's Champions League clashes
with Chelsea.

The German international will play no part in either semi-final leg
after failing to recover from injury.

It had been hoped the Reds' experienced anchorman, who sustained knee
ligament damage against Everton a month ago, would be fit to at least
play some part in the second leg at Anfield on May 3.

But manager Rafael Benitez today confirmed Hamann will miss both
Champions League semi-final games, as will injury-troubled Harry Kewell
who is still fighting for fitness. Numerous problems have kept Kewell on
the sidelines since December.

The news on Hamann is a particular blow, with Xabi Alonso one of several
Liverpool players who have already picked up a yellow card in Europe and
who would be ineligible for the return leg should they collect a caution
at Stamford Bridge.

Hamann and Kewell are due to return to senior training in the next few
days, but Benitez says they won't be fit to be considered in either leg.

"Neither Hamann nor Kewell will be ready to play in either game against
Chelsea," said Benitez today.

"Kewell is training, but it's not possible for him to recover in time.
Didi won't join in with the other players until next week."

Jamie Carragher and Steve Finnan are among the other likely starters
who'll have to tread carefully in London next week.

Alonso, meanwhile, is likely to sit out tomorrow's clash with Crystal
Palace after admitting he's feeling the effects of three games in eight
days.

A further assessment of his condition will be made today before Benitez
makes his decision.

The manager said: "We need to see about Xabi. He's been spending a lot
of time with the masseur undergoing treatment."

"We're are thinking about resting him because he told me after the
Portsmouth game he was tired."

Liverpool have remained on the south coast before heading to London
tonight. They trained yesterday at Southampton's Marchwood complex.

Having secured precious points at Portsmouth, Benitez knows they face
another must-win clash at Selhurst Park. He is hoping the return to
goalscoring form of Fernando Morientes will spark a spree in his
remaining games.

"Fernando scored an important goal which was important for him and the
team," said Benitez.

"That will help his confidence. He's another player who will benefit
from starting pre-season with us early."

Liverpool Echo, 21 April 2005
Riise promises a fight to the finish
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

JOHN ARNE Riise remains upbeat about Liverpool's chances of catching
Everton, regardless of the ongoing three-point gap between the
Merseyside giants.

The Reds hoped to reduce the deficit after securing an impressive 2-1
win over Portsmouth last night.

But the result at Goodison Park means Rafa Benitez's side have it all to
do in their last four fixtures.

Riise insists their rivals' form won't demoralise the Liverpool players
as they keep scrapping for every point.

"We know first and foremost we have to win all our own games.

There's no point us worrying about what Everton are doing," said Riise.

"Obviously we were hoping they'd slip up last night, but the fact they
didn't shows they're a good side and it's going to go to the very last
game of the season if we're going to catch them.

"I think the last day will decide it. By beating Manchester United,
they're three points above us and they can end it if they win their game
in hand.

"If they do that, there's nothing we can do about it. In the meantime,
we know we've simply got to win every match. There's no chance of us
giving up.

"The main thing is we've come down here and shown the commitment and
quality we need. We never stopped attacking or sat on the lead. We kept
on going forward, looking for more goals."

Riise created Liverpool's two goals at Fratton Park, but he's in no
doubt who's made the difference to the standard of the team's football
in recent weeks.

"We're keeping the ball much better than we did without Xabi Alonso,"
said Riise. "He has the ability to get the ball and switch play so
quickly. Since he's come back in, he's been brilliant. I love playing
with him because he sees the pass immediately and will ping it to you.
It's a pleasure to play with someone like that."

Steven Gerrard was rested last night to preserve his groin problem ahead
of the trips to Crystal Palace and Chelsea.

Luis Garcia was also subbed as a precaution after feeling a tight groin
at half time, but hopes to be fit for the weekend.

Liverpool are using Southampton's training facilities today and tomorrow
before heading to London.

Liverpool Daily Post, 21 April 2005
Leaving Gerrard out aids Liverpool cause
By David Prior, Daily Post

RAFAEL BENITEZ defended his decision to leave Steven Gerrard on the
substitutes' bench as Liverpool ended their dismal run on the road with
a hard-fought victory at Fratton Park.

Fernando Morientes and Luis Garcia secured all three points either side
of a Diomansy Kamara leveller, but Everton's surprise win over
Manchester United leaves Liverpool still three points behind their
Merseyside rivals having played a game more.

The result was earned for the most part without skipper Gerrard, who
despite having missed out on the long trip to Italy last week through
injury, was rested by Benitez.

And the Liverpool manager would not reveal whether his captain would
start against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

He said: "We have a lot of games in a short time and we need to use all
the squad - the most important thing is to have Steve fit for the next
games.

"Maybe he will start against Crystal Palace but I have to check with
other players first to see if there are other injury problems after this
game.

"He wants to score goals and be the best and he's waiting for his
opportunity the next time. We need to protect him.

"We have important players such as Steven and when you must play two or
three very important games in one week, you need to use the other
players because you cannot use the same players all the time, it's
impossible."

Milan Baros returned to the starting line-up after his three-game
suspension, while Djibril Cisse was again only used sparingly as a late
substitute.

Liverpool's win ended their run of three defeats away from home, and
Benitez insisted his main target was still to finish in the Premiership
top quartet.

He added: "It's still our idea to get fourth because if you finish in
the top four then you get in the Champions League. If you lose in the
(Champions League) final, you don't get in. It is important to
concentrate on the games in the Premiership.

"We can't do anything about what Everton do but if they win it of course
makes it a little bit more difficult."

The Spanish manager, who is keeping his squad in the south of England
for the Palace game on Saturday, added: "It was good to win and
especially good to win away.

"We played some good football and created many chances. John Arne Riise
could have had a hat-trick, but you need to take your opportunities or
you can have a surprise right at the end."

Portsmouth had a goal by Lomana LuaLua wiped out by an offside flag in
the opening minutes but TV replays later suggested it was a close call.

After Morientes gave Liverpool a fourth-minute lead, Kamara forced in a
33rd-minute scrambled equaliser.

But Garcia grabbed his 12th of the season with a header in first-half
stoppage time before he was replaced by Vladimir Smicer at the break.

Liverpool clinched their first away win in the Premiership - and only
the fifth this season - since beating Charlton on February 1.

Benitez said: "We need balance in the team and I think we are getting it.

"Djibril Cisse is coming back slowly after a bad injury and Luis Garcia
had a slight muscle injury when he went off for the second half
tonight," he added..

Pompey's new manager Alain Perrin suffered his first defeat as Fratton
Park manager but remained positive.

The Frenchman said: "The game was as tough as I expected because
Liverpool are a strong team.

"We made a few small mistakes in the first half but there was still
plenty of fight and skill among the players and it will not damage them
too much.

"Our goalkeeper made some very good saves but Liverpool needed to take
three points just as much as we wanted to and they came to win. They
were stronger than us."

Perrin was philosophical about the TV evidence that suggeted LuaLua's
early goal should have stood.

He said: "I could not see from my position on the bench whether it was
onside or not.

"But we had problems before the kick-off with Arjan de Zeeuw having
stomach trouble and Linvoy Primus a muscle strain.

"We have to be careful with another big game against Southampton on
Sunday when we have to fight for our fans.

"I saw Southampton fight for a point at Bolton on TV last night and it
will not be easy for us but it is a game I am looking forward to. There
was enough in our performance against Liverpool to keep up our morale."

RAFA UPBEAT AFTER POMPEY VICTORY
By Lee Brown

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has spelled out his side's target after
tonight's vital win at Portsmouth, saying. "We need to pick up three
more points than Everton."

Goals from Fernando Morientes and Luis Garcia were enough to earn the
points on the South Coast, but celebrations will have been tempered by
the news that Everton had beaten Manchester United at Goodison Park. But
Benitez refuses to give up the fight and insists that his side must
focus on what they need to do.

He said, "Everton's result tonight makes it a bit more difficult for us,
but we can't control what happens on other pitches.

"All we know is that we need to collect three more points than Everton
in our last four games and our idea at Crystal Palace on Saturday will
be to win and hope we can reduce the gap."

Liverpool's win is just their fifth away victory in the Premiership this
season and Benitez was satisfied with his side's performance despite
lamenting their failure to increase the size of the margin.

Benitez said, "We deserved this win tonight and the players controlled
the game, but we should have scored more.

"When you dominate a game but only have a one goal lead there is always
the chance of a surprise at the end. We had so many chances tonight and
John Arne Riise could have had a hatrick."

On the exclusion of Steven Gerrard from the starting line up, Benitez
said, "We have a lot of games coming up and we have to take that into
account when we're picking the team. I will need to speak to Steven and
decide whether he plays on Saturday."

PA Sport, 20 April 2005
Portsmouth 1 Liverpool 2.

Liverpool found a cure for their Barclays Premiership travel sickness as
goals from Fernando Morientes and Luis Garcia condemned new Portsmouth
boss Alain Perrin to his first defeat on Wednesday night.

The two Spaniards' strikes were Liverpool's first away from home in the
league since their last Premiership win on the road on February 1.

But their attempt to climb back into the fourth Champions League
position was thwarted by news of a Duncan Ferguson winner for Mersey
rivals Everton against nine-man Manchester United.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez, who kept Steven Gerrard on the bench for
68 minutes, will be delighted, however, with his side's sharp display
against a Pompey side always difficult to beat at Fratton Park.

The home side certainly showed their fighting qualities as record
signing Diomansy Kamara smuggled in a 33rd-minute equaliser but it took
a bold display by keeper Jamie Ashdown to prevent Liverpool winning
convincingly.

There were near misses and spurned opportunities aplenty in a thrilling
first half and there was more of the same after the break.

The £6 million Morientes netted at the second attempt from John Arne
Riise's cross in only the fourth minute but Lomana LuaLua had already
had an effort disallowed and Milan Baros wasted a good chance.

And Morientes should have scored a second goal for Liverpool in the 26th
minute when after a raid by Sami Hyypia, Steve Finnan's cross found the
tall striker unchallenged 10 yards out at the far post, but he headed
off target.

Pompey were guilty of poor marksmanship, too. Kamara hesitated inside
the Liverpool area when a chance looked like opening up and when a
lovely ball by Gary O'Neil sent LuaLua in to lob neatly over Jerzy
Dudek, the keeper scrambled back to palm away under the bar.

Pompey raised the volume with an equaliser two minutes later by Kamara
following an O'Neil corner.

Dejan Stefanovic flicked on, Arjan de Zeeuw's diving header came back
off a post and Kamara forced home the rebound for his sixth of the season.

But Kamara spurned another opening to put Pompey ahead eight minutes
later when a piece of magic by LuaLua left him one-on-one with Dudek
only for the keeper to spread himself bravely and block the shot.

And although they were lucky not to pay for that when Riise shot wide
from a Xabi Alonso cross on 42 minutes, there was no stopping Luis
Garcia heading the visitors back into the lead from a Riise cross in
first-half injury time.

Pompey were indebted to keeper Ashdown for preventing Liverpool wrapping
up victory early in the second half when he stuck out a foot to stop
Riise's drive, held Baros' shot on the turn and tipped over a Riise
rocket before defying the same pair with a brave double save.

Yet Steve Stone should have put the home side back on level terms on the
hour when he overran the ball inside the six-yard box following Matthew
Taylor's cross and ended up losing it altogether.

It still seemed only a matter of time until the Pompey goal was pierced
again but when they brought on ex-Liverpool man Patrik Berger - who
scored the winner against them last year - they had more firepower and
Dudek had to make a flying save to keep out the midfielder's 25-yarder.

Ashdown's outstanding stop to defy Xabi Alonso right at the end was
typical of the contest.

Portsmouth: Ashdown, Cisse, Stefanovic, De Zeeuw (Primus 45), Taylor,
Stone (Berger 66), Skopelitis, Hughes, O'Neil, Kamara, LuaLua (Fuller 76).
Subs Not Used: Hislop, Rodic.
Booked: Hughes.
Goals: Kamara 34.

Liverpool: Dudek, Finnan, Hyypia, Carragher, Traore, Luis Garcia (Smicer
45), Alonso, Biscan (Gerrard 67), Riise, Baros (Cisse 79), Morientes.
Subs Not Used: Pellegrino, Carson.
Goals: Morientes 4, Luis Garcia 45.

Liverpool daily Post, 19 April 2005
Thanks for my humble pie... it'll be a pleasure
By Mark Lawrenson, Daily Post

THOSE of you who are regular readers of this column will remember that I
said I'd have to eat humble pie if Liverpool made it past Juventus in
the Champions League, having gone with my head and not my heart.

Well, it turns out that a regular reader is Liverpool chief executive
Rick Parry, who sent me a giant humble pie this week. It was suitably
decorated with the Champions League logo and LFC and suitably tasty.

For me as a former Liverpool player, the victory was a sweet one, and if
Liverpool play like that in every game until the end of the season, I'd
happily wolf down plenty more pies in celebration.

My bleak verdict for Liverpool had stemmed largely from the injury to
Steven Gerrard that ruled him out of the Turin trip.

What I failed to take into account was that they would put in such a
remarkable team performance that it left the Italians lumping long balls
forward, which was game over tactically.

I also failed to realise the effect on the team that the returning Xabi
Alonso would have. I was in Turin and I can't remember the Spaniard
wasting a pass.

To come into a game such as that, with as much at stake and after so
long out, and perform as he did, speaks volumes for the quality that
simply oozes from everything he does.

I love watching him play, and I bet Fernando Morientes - and the rest of
Liverpool's strikers - must be feeling the same way, because of his
country-man's ability to play people in and pick a pass.

The return of Alonso and Djibril Cisse is a massive boost for Rafael
Benitez, after what seems like an eternity of anxiously watching the
treat-ment room door to see who would go in to it next.

The pair of them will be running on adrenaline for the first game or
two, and the challenge after that is to maintain their standards while
their bodies feel like taking a break.

If Alonso especially can do that, I believe it will be a real boost also
for Gerrard because having Alonso in the team will allow him to play in
a more advanced role.

Thinking back to earlier in the season, Liverpool's best results came
when Benitez played Gerrard off the striker, with Alonso providing the
ammunition from deep.

That same system - almost a 4-2-3-1 - will be in evidence at Fratton
Park tomorrow in a game Liverpool have to win.

If this were October or November, if you got a point from a trip to
Portsmouth you'd probably feel that was all right - even though you
probably should get a win.

A draw is no good now though because with Everton playing Manchester
United, Liverpool have a chance to do what they have failed to do on
several occasions before - climb into fourth place..

It seems like every time that carrot has been dangled up to now, they
have slipped up and fallen back.

If that happens tomorrow, there's a chance they could be six points
behind Everton and all but out of the running for that fourth place in
the Premiership.

But with Alonso's influence releasing Gerrard to roam further forward, I
take Liverpool to win.

And this time I hope my predictions aren't quite so pie in the sky!

Liverpool Echo, 19 April 2005
20-goal man is what Benitez really needs
By Ian Rush, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL hit two more spectacular strikes against Spurs on Saturday,
but I'm sure Rafa Benitez would do anything for a striker who'd get him
20 scruffy goals a year.

Some of the efforts we've seen at Anfield in the last few months are
worthy of their own goal of the season competition.

But you can't always rely on the extraordinary to win games every week,
which is why I expect Benitez will be back in the market for a striker
this summer.

I fear the penalty box goal poacher is becoming a dying breed in English
football.

It's not just a problem for Liverpool, but few clubs possess what you'd
call an out-andout goalscorer these days.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy is the closest you'll get to it now. He's someone
who thrives on anything in the box and is as likely to score a tap-in as
anything outside the area.

When I played, I took as much joy from a toe poke from six yards as a
volley outside the box.

And the first thing I used to do was run to the person who made the pass
to me, make them feel appreciated and hopefully ensure they'd make
exactly the same unselfish contribution the next time they were in the
same position.

Liverpool don't have a natural goalscorer available at the moment.

There's been a lot of focus on Fernando Morientes in recent weeks,
particularly because he's only scored twice since January.

That doesn't bother me because you can see his quality. Once he's had a
full pre-season he'll be much fitter and sharper.

But even then, I'm not sure Morientes is the type of player who'll be
prolific. He's more of a target man who others will play off.

Liverpool could have done with better finishing against Spurs after
carving out several great chances.

It's strange they took the most difficult opportunities.

Sometimes, you also have to give the opposition some credit. I thought
Spurs played some good football and showed they're improving as much as
Liverpool.

They have plenty of excellent young players and suggested they could be
a side to watch in the years to come.

Liverpool still did enough to win, but could have done with the kind of
scrappy winner they haven't managed enough.

There aren't many available out there who are masters of the art. Apart,
perhaps, from a certain Michael Owen ...

Midfield duo can be best in Europe

I SAID before the Liverpool-Juventus tie the winner would win the
Champions League.

I'm not going to change my mind now.

For a side to beat Liverpool five times in a season is unheard of.

Chelsea will also be playing a different Liverpool team than the one
they've played in all but 20 minutes this season.

That's how long Xabi Alonso and Steven Gerrard have spent on the pitch
together against the Londoners.

I know it's early to make such a prediction, but I believe this duo
could become the finest mid-field pairing in Europe, eclipsing an
impressive Chelsea engine room.

Alonso staggered me with the quality of his performance against Spurs.

I thought he'd dip after his comeback in Turin. In fact, he was even better.

If they're fit and available, Alonso and Gerrard would give Liverpool a
chance of beating anyone, which is why I'm confident an unlikely
European Cup win is possible.

Carra disappointment

FRANK LAMPARD deserves the PFA Player of the Year Award for his radical
improvement this season.

When he first joined Chelsea, I thought Lamp-ard was a bit limited. Now
I've changed my mind, not simply because of his goals, but because his
range of passing is much better too.

I'm not surprised Chelsea have so many contenders considering the season
they've had.

From Liverpool's point of view, the big disappointment was no
nomination for Jamie Carragher.

There's nothing between John Terry and Carragher, but the Chelsea man's
goals and his side's greater success in the Premiership has obviously
earned him more votes.

If Liverpool were competing for the title, I'm sure Carragher would have
made the shortlist.

Liverpool Daily Post, 18 April 2005
Fans hit out at ticket sales plan
By Jessica Shaughnessy, Daily Post Staff

OUTRAGED Liverpool fans last night branded the club's loyalty scheme "a
farce" after they endured long waits and blocked phone lines as they
tried to buy tickets for the Champions League semi-final home tie
against Chelsea.

Many supporters condemned the decision to allow tickets to be sold to
fans who had attended just two of the six European Champions League home
games this season.

It meant some fans with a full attendance record and even away trips
across Europe feared missing out on the May 3 second leg at Anfield to
less regular supporters.

But an LFC spokesman last night insisted everyone who had been to at
least two games would be able to get a ticket and that opening up the
sales was the only way to get them to the fans in the short time before
the match.

Thousands queued up outside Anfield in the rain yesterday for up to five
hours after club officials opened up ticket sales to all those who met
the two game criteria.

Ian Latton, from St Helens, tried desperately to get through on the
phone lines all day.

"Many people have to work so the phone lines are the only option. This
just makes a farce of the club's fan card system.

"It's meant to reward loyalty, yet everyone who has just two games on it
has the same chance of a ticket for one of the most important games in
the club's recent history.

"I've seen better loyalty cards in supermarket forecourts."

Other fans complained that just six of Anfield's ticket booths were open
to deal with the hundreds of fans queuing outside.

Andrew Bailey, 32, of Northwich, Cheshire, who travelled to Liverpool to
buy tickets with his brother Chris, 26, of North Wales, said: "We really
ran out of patience.

"We have been to five Champions League matches. Even so, we had to queue
for five hours in the freezing cold and the rain.

"I can't understand why they didn't straddle the ticket selling process
as they have done in the past. Open it up to people who have gone to all
the matches on the first day and lower the qualification as each day
goes on."

Les Lawson, secretary of the Merseyside branch of the Official Liverpool
Supporters' Club, said: "Before making this decision, the club made sure
there was enough tickets for everybody who has been to at least two
Champions League matches.

"I wasn't there yesterday, but perhaps it would have been better if
those who had been to more matches got priority."

Last night, a Liverpool FC club spokesman said: "We would like to thank
the fans for their co-operation.

"Because the game is only two weeks away, we have a limited time to sell
them.

"We are confident that there are enough tickets for everybody who has
been to two or more Champions League games."

Tickets will be on sale again from 8.15am today.

Liverpool Daily Post, 19 April 2005
Youngsters notch their fifth victory
Academy Football with Chris Wright, Daily Post

KARL NOON scored the only goal of the match to give Liverpool under-18s
victory over Barnsley at the Kirkby Academy on Saturday.

John Owens's side secured only their fifth victory of the season in the
FA Premier Academy League.

With just one more Academy League match left Owens fielded a side very
much with next season in mind, with several schoolboy players, who will
be part of the U18s squad when they go full-time next season, involved.

But it was top scorer Noon who proved decisive on the day. He grabbed
his ninth goal in all competitions this season after 30 minutes when his
shot looped over the keeper via a deflection off a defender.

Liverpool continued to dominate the match, but failed to add to Noon's
strike.

But in the end it was enough to claim the three points.

Owens's youngsters will finish bottom of Group C table and face
Sheffield Wednesday in their final match this Saturday.

Owens said: "We had several of the under-16s in due to a number of
injuries, and obviously the U16s had to pull in the U14s and U15s. But
they did well.

"We were very much on top and scored after 30 minutes. It was a good
level of football overall.

"Initially, though, it took time to get going because with the younger
lads in it is a mix of players.

He added: "There are not so many who have played regularly together so
you don't get that quick start into normal team play that you would expect.

"It took a bit of time, but we did that and right through into the
second half we continued to play well.

"Unfortunately we couldn't get any more goals.

"We always looked very safe and Paul Lancaster didn't have much to do in
goal," added Owens.

LIVERPOOL UNDER-18s: Lancaster, Spearing, Hitchin, F Smith (Pringle 75),
Threlfall, Barnett, Hammill, Frayne, Noon, Barratt, Burns. Sub: Willis.

Liverpool Echo, 18 April 2005
Alonso fitness key to his form - Rafa
By David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL boss Rafael Benitez will send Xabi Alonso out for his third
appearance in seven days tomorrow night - with no worries that the
Spanish midfielder is being asked to do too much too soon.

Alonso has hit the ground running after almost four months on the
sidelines with a broken ankle.

With just 45 minutes of reserve team football behind him, Alonso played
90 minutes

in the caudlron of Turin, managed another 84 minutes against Tottenham
just three days later - and is in line to start again at Portsmouth
tomorrow.

But the player's supreme physical condition means that Benitez has no
fears about his ability to cope with the demands.

"I think Xabi will play because he is in very good physical condition,"
explained the Reds' coach..

"I know the player professionally and I know him as a person and I can
always talk very well about him because he works hard and is always
thinking about his fitness.

"He talks to the physio all the time and is always positive.

"He told me at half-time on Saturday he was a bit tired and I was
thinking about changing it earlier, but he can pass the ball properly
and control the game.

"In the end he played 80 minutes and played a good game.

"For us he is a very important player because he can change the game for
us."

The Reds travel to the South Coast where they have lost their last four
games 1-0, to face another team with a new manager at the helm.

Just 10 days ago Liverpool lost to a Manchester City side inspired by a
new man in the dug-out, Stuart Pearce.

Frenchman Alain Perrin took over at Pompey a fortnight ago and since
then, despite an injury crisis, the relegation threatened club has
beaten Charlton and drawn at Birmingham.

Sami Hyypia, meanwhile, has told Liverpool he wants to extend his six
year stint at Anfield and sign a new contract.

The Finn only has 12 months remaining on his present deal and said: "I
want to stay at Liverpool, there is no doubt about that. We will see
what happens, but I still have one year to go and I want to stay.

"In football, you are on the bench sometimes and then when you play you
have to try and show people what you can do.

"I consider myself a good professional and will do a job when needed."

Official LFC Website, 18 April 2005
LE TALLEC AT THE DOUBLE IN RESERVES THRILLER
Steve Hunter in Wrexham

Anthony Le Tallec scored twice and set up another as Liverpool Reserves
came from 2-0 down to draw 3-3 with Blackburn Rovers in a thriller at
Wrexham's Racecourse Ground.

Blackburn Rovers were 2-0 up after six minutes but Reds goalkeeper Paul
Harrison made some terrific saves to enable Liverpool to get back into
the game.

It was a fantastic game of football full of goals, defensive mishaps,
near misses and fine saves.

Le Tallec played up front as the main striker, played the full 90
minutes, and had a really good match and was superb especially in the
second half.

Both teams were full of young players and former Liverpool Academy
winger Ralph Welch was in the Blackburn side.

Darren Potter played just off Le Tallec up front with captain John Welsh
and David Mannix in the centre of midfield.

Liverpool started very sloppily and found themselves 2-0 down after just
six minutes. The opening goal arrived after two minutes. Zak Whitbread
stood on the ball and let in Keith Barker who set up strike partner Matt
Derbyshire who finished well.

Four minutes later the same combination made the second goal. Potter
lost the ball and Barker beat Whitbread before playing in Derbyshire
whose finish was clinical giving Harrison absolutely no chance.

Liverpool Reserve manager Hughie McAuley was not happy with his side's
defending for the two goals and they paid the price for some sloppy play.

Liverpool should have had a goal back after nine minutes when John Welsh
had two great chances. First he miskicked from seven yards out then
after Blackburn failed to clear Welsh had another chance but could only
shoot straight at Steven Drench.

Then Le Tallec missed two great chances. He sent a header wide and then
after winning the ball he found himself clean through but could only
shoot straight at Drench.

Blackburn then should have made it 3-0 after 13 minutes when a mistake
by Danny O'Donnell gave Barker a glorious chance but from five yards out
he miskicked and it was an easy save for Harrison.

The excellent Derbyshire then nearly completed a first half hat-trick
after 26 minutes but Harrison produced a stunning save to keep out his
goalbound volley.

Three minutes later Darren Potter should have made it 2-1 but could only
fire over the bar after a superb one-two between him and Richie Partridge.

Harrison then kept Liverpool in it with two more great saves just before
half-time. First he palmed Derbyshire's effort onto a post when the
striker ran clean through and then denied the Rovers striker again with
a superb save from his volley.

For the second half Hughie McAuley made a tactical change by bringing on
Academy striker Phil Townley to midfield with Potter dropping back to
central midfield with Welsh. Adam Hitchen made way with Mannix moving to
right back.

With Welsh and Potter now pulling the strings in midfield Liverpool were
a much improved team, however the Reds had Harrison to thank for keeping
them in the game with a superb save to keep out Gary Harkins header.

From then on Liverpool got back into the game and went 3-2 up in 15
minutes.

After 52 minutes Townley got in behind the Rovers defence down the right
and after superb hold-up play from Le Tallec he set up Richie Partridge
who drilled a low shot past Drench for 2-1.

Then straight from the kick-off Le Tallec made it 2-2. It started with
superb play down the left from 17-year-old Paul Barratt and from his
excellent low cross Le Tallec was on hand to make it 2-2.

On the hour mark it was 3-2, Le Tallec again the scorer with a superb
glanced header into the corner of the net from Potter's free-kick.

Derbyshire then missed a great chance to make it 3-3 after 68 minutes
when he got in behind the Reds defence but blazed over the bar. They
came even closer five minutes later when a flowing move down the right
involving former Red Welch set up Tony Kane. His superb cross was met by
Barker whose header came off the post and deflected back into the
grateful arms of Harrison.

Barratt then went close to making it 4-2 to Liverpool when his shot was
saved by Drench after a superb run. Barratt had a fine game for
Liverpool and the 17-year-old has impressed at reserve level and once
again can be pleased with his contribution.

Unfortunately the Reds couldn't hold onto their lead and Blackburn
levelled 10 minutes from time and again from a defensive point of view
it was disappointing from Liverpool. Andy Taylor got in behind the Reds
defence down the left and after his cross wasn't dealt with by David
Raven, Paul Weaver made no mistake with the finish for 3-3.

Blackburn then might have won it had it not been for another good save
from Paul Harrison.

Liverpool Reserves: Harrison, Hitchen (Townley 45), Raven, O'Donnell,
Whitbread, Mannix, Partridge, Welsh, Le Tallec, Potter, Barratt. Subs
unused: Noon, Willis (GK), Hammill, Frayne.

Blackburn Rovers Reserves: Drench, Kane, Taylor, Weaver, Barr, Nolan,
Welch (Woods 77), Harkins, Derbyshire, Barker (Garner 80), Byrom (Hodge 30).

Referee: A Page.

Liverpoolfc.tv Man of the match: Paul Harrison. Simply because he kept
Liverpool in the match and enabled the Reds to get a point with a some
superb saves. Anthony Le Tallec had an excellent second half and
17-year-old Paul Barratt did really well on the left side of midfield.

Liverpool Echo, 18 April 2005
We've yet to see the best of Morientes
By David Prentice at Anfield

RAFA BENITEZ fears that Reds fans won't see the best of Fernando
Morientes until next season.

The Spanish striker missed two chances in Saturday's Anfield draw with
Tottenham, extending his barren spell in front of goal to more than two
months.

But the Reds' boss believes his £6.5m signing is suffering from the
months he spent on the sidelines at Real Madrid before he joined Liverpool.

"He needs to score," admitted Benitez. "He played better against
Tottenham, but he needs a goal because the chance at the end he snatched
at a little.

"It's difficult for him. At Real Madrid he did not play for a long time.
We know he is a skilful player and he has good movement and good
heading, but sometimes he needs to be a little quicker.

"I am sure that pre-season will help him. He has had five months without
playing. Maybe now he is in pre-season.

"The first chance, the header, I thought the goalkeeper made a good
save. The last one is difficult because it was at the end of the game.
Maybe if he had controlled and shot it might have been different."

Morientes has now scored just two goals in 12 appearances. After goals
in successive games against Fulham and Charlton in February he has been
hit by injury and ineligibility for the Champions League.

Liverpool's European curse appeared to strike again at Anfield. The Reds
have played 12 Champions League matches this season, and have won only
twice on their return to Premiership action.

Despite an excellent performance for the last hour on Saturday, missed
chances meant that Bolton climbed over Liverpool into fifth place in the
table.

"I was thinking about these things before," conceded Benitez. "It's
fantastic to win Champions League games, but you play more games as a
result. We have two more players back available, but we have more
matches now as well.

"We know it's very difficult to play before and after the Champions
League games at the same level. We tried and I think we have played a
good game in terms of football and physically.

"Some players, like Steve Finnan, Luis Garcia and Carra, have played a
lot of games, but they play with a high tempo and intensity and it is
difficult to find fresh legs to keep the quality high."

Benitez was generally pleased with his side's display.

"We have played a very good game," he added. "In the last 15 minutes of
the second half we have played good football at a high tempo, hit the
post, won a penalty, had plenty of shots with a team which had some
tired players. "We changed the system after half-an-hour because we were
having problems.

"But I don't think it was a mistake to start with that formation because
the idea was right. I was thinking to have three forwards - Nunez,
Morientes and Garcia - all high up the pitch..

"We changed Luis Garcia between the line and Steve Warnock and we
started to control the game, but their first goal was a good goal. The
ball dipped late and it was a very difficult shot to stop.

"Jerzy for me has played a good game. The only problem was we needed to
score. Morientes had two clear chances, Steven Gerrard had a penalty -
and normally Stevie is a guarantee - Steve Finnan and Luis Garcia both
had chances . . ."

Despite the frustration at two dropped points, though, Benitez joined
the Anfield appreciation society for Xabi Alonso.

The Spanish midfielder produced a virtuoso display, just days after his
first appearance for three-and-a-half months.

Despite complaining of tiredness after the match, Benitez believes he
will be fine for Wednesday's trip to Portsmouth.

"I think he can play because he is in very good physical condition," he
explained. "I know him as a professional and as a person and can always
talk very well about him. He works hard and he is always thinking about
being fit."

[lfc-news] How Rafael painted a red heaven - Observer

The Observer, 17 April 2005
How Rafael painted a red heaven
After a faltering start in Europe, Liverpool have benefited from their
manager's subtle changes, says Amy Lawrence

Back in August, when AK Graz rudely took the lead at Anfield,
Liverpool's Champions League adventure was at risk of stalling before it
took off. What, you wonder, was whirring through the mind of Rafael
Benítez? New to the place, endeavouring to make a decent impression,
keen to stamp his authority on the team, well he knew that failure to
hurdle a summer Champions League qualifier against Austrian opposition
would test the Kop's goodwill.

Liverpool prevailed, but not without Benítez recognising the mountain of
work in front of him. The team that night, a mere four matches into his
job on Merseyside, bore the heavy imprint of his predecessor: Dudek;
Carragher, Henchoz, Hyypia, Riise; Potter, Gerrard, Diao, Kewell; Baros,
Cissé. It was basically a Gérard Houllier team plus the new striker he
bought but never got to play. Eight months on, against Juventus, and the
extent to which Benítez has reshaped the team and retuned the men in it
has to be applauded. It is the subtle changes more than the blazing ones
that best sum up the Benítez effect thus far. It is all very well buying
proven quality, such as Xabi Alonso and Fernando Morientes - for a top
manager to import top players is not rocket science - but looking at the
way the team against Graz has evolved into a collective capable of
seizing control over Juventus shows how much individuals have raised
their game: Jamie Carragher has turned from right-back/utility man into
ultra-committed centre-half; Igor Biscan from uncomfortable defender to
holding midfielder; John Arne Riise, unshackled from full-back, marauds
his flank with new authority. Elsewhere in the team, more miracles. Bet
you would never expect to see Djimi Traoré mustering enough composure to
rein in European footballer of the year Pavel Nedved. (Bet Nedved didn't
either.) And Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek, who has enjoyed good
times and bad during Benítez's reign, believes that it is all down to
the manager.

'Above all, it was our collective effort as a team that won us the tie,'
Dudek says. 'We were better tactically than Juve thanks to our coach,
but we also played with a togetherness that they were unable to match.
It was our willingness to work for each other that decided which side
went through and which went out.' In drawing more out of players'
personal performances in such a short space of time, Benítez has
equalled the impact that José Mourinho has had in his first season in
the Premiership. (Eidur Gudjohnsen, Claude Makelele, Joe Cole, for
example, are far more productive than a year ago.)

Crucially, what Benítez has not done is to achieve it consistently. For
all the praise Liverpool merit for advancing to the Champions League
semi-finals, they have this season been maddeningly inconsistent. The
fans who hopped and hugged deliriously as it became evident that the
habit Juventus are famed for in Italy - disgustingly late match-winners
- was not going to happen are those same fans who shook their
demoralised heads at their team's clumsiness five days previously at
Manchester City.

It was as woeful at Bolton, Birmingham, Middlesbrough and, of course,
Burnley in the FA Cup third round. Taunted and ticked off for playing an
understrength team, Benítez does not seem so guilty of dereliction now
such a thrilling opportunity lies ahead. Benítez could argue that it has
been nigh on impossible to achieve consistency, considering the freak
injury list that has been a hindrance all season. It makes a refreshing
change, after Houllier's tendency to delve into his big book of excuses,
that the Spaniard has not whined about Anfield's overcrowded sickbay.
His ability to improvise with makeshift squads has enhanced his
reputation for tactical shrewdness in Europe. Having been sketchy in the
group phase, Liverpool displayed a potent blend of discipline and
determination once the do-or-die matches arrived, whoever the personnel.
Auf Wiedersehen Bayer Leverkusen. Arrivederci Juventus. Bye bye Chelsea?

Liverpool need not look farther than their opponents for an example of
how to upset the odds in an all-British Champions League affair. A year
ago, Arsenal were cruising towards the title, heavy favourites and had
the supposed psychological edge of clipping Chelsea's wings every time
they played... Fat lot of good it did them when Wayne Bridge delivered
the knockout blow in the Champions League quarter-finals. Not so long
ago, Champions League wisdom extolled the need for experience and time
to adapt to the special demands of Europe's showpiece tournament, but
Liverpool and Chelsea are excelling under fresh leadership.

Incidentally, of the 32 managers who put their energy and imagination
into this elite tournament this season, who was the man with by far the
most Champions League experience? Sir Alex Ferguson. The man with the
next highest number of these games on his CV? Arsène Wenger. But the
longer these two Premiership heavyweights chase the holy grail, the less
they seem to understand what is needed. It is not difficult to imagine
twinges of jealousy at Old Trafford and Highbury as Liverpool got their
tactics spot on in both legs of the tie against Juventus. Benítez
encouraged Liverpool to do something that United and Arsenal have
drifted away from lately in Europe. They roared into Juventus, all
high-velocity, pumped-up attacking, in the best traditions of English
football in Europe. Having done the damage, they were solid enough to do
a far more effective job protecting their lead against the Italians than
Real Madrid managed in the previous round.

'We have to congratulate Liverpool,' sighed Juventus striker Alessandro
Del Piero. 'They defended well, they made it very difficult for us to
have any shots on goal.' Over 180 minutes against a Juve team so
dreadful that they deserve Fabio Cappello's most withering stare
treatment over the next few weeks, Liverpool's first 20 minutes was the
most crucial, most unexpected and most impressive. Can they perform like
that more regularly? The quest for a more balanced, consistent Liverpool
is next season's task. They will be helped by the fact that they will
earn the fat end of £20 million - at least - during this Champions
League adventure and should have a more robust challenge when everyone
is fit again next summer. But requalifying for the Champions League one
way or another is enough to care about for now - and, oddly enough,
three European games would seem a better bet in which to achieve this
objective than the five remaining in the Premiership, especially after
yesterday's draw with Tottenham. Where all this leaves Everton does not
bear thinking about on the Blue side of Merseyside.

[lfc-news] Dudek slams 'anything goes' Chelsea - Observer

The Observer, 17 April 2005
Dudek slams 'anything goes' Chelsea
By Kaz Mochlinski and Denis Campbell

Liverpool's Jerzy Dudek has joined Arsenal and Manchester United in
criticising Chelsea's off-field behaviour. Speaking to Observer Sport,
Dudek, the Liverpool goalkeeper, made a strongly worded attack on the
champions elect and accused them of deliberately trying to undermine
opponents before a big game by targeting one of their key players.

Dudek cited Chelsea's widely reported interest in prising Steven Gerrard
away from Anfield this summer as an example of 'a notorious Chelsea
tactic'. His comments follow Arsenal's alarm at Chelsea apparently
trying to 'tap up' Ashley Cole, and Sir Alex Ferguson's fury that
Chelsea had shown 'contempt' for Manchester United when chief executive
Peter Kenyon had dinner with Rio Ferdinand at a London restaurant last week.

Dudek revealed that he and his team-mates expect Chelsea to resort to
underhand tactics to try to destabilise Liverpool ahead of the Champions
League matches, on 26 April and 3 May. 'We know it won't be easy. We
expect the Steven Gerrard situation to come up again, but we're used to
it and realise that this is a notorious tactic to lower a rival's morale
before a big tie', he said. 'I get the impression that with them
anything goes, any method is acceptable to break an opponent's spirit,
make them feel uncertain or upset. But it won't bother me in any way.
We'll expect more of it as the games approach and we'll be ready for them.'

The 'Colegate' saga, persistent rumours about Gerrard, manager José
Mourinho's attacks on referee Anders Frisk and now the Ferdinand affair
have led many to accuse Chelsea of high-handed and dishonourable conduct
that damages football's integrity. Uefa have already punished Mourinho
and Chelsea for various indiscretions.

Dudek's comments come as Ferguson tries to persuade the Old Trafford
hierarchy to lodge a formal complaint about Kenyon and Ferdinand's
encounter with the Premier League, who have already charged Chelsea,
Cole and Mourinho over their meeting at a London hotel in late January.
A three-man independent commission will conduct a hearing into that,
probably before the season ends. Ferguson declined to accept Chelsea's
assurances that the Ferdinand encounter was 'a chance meeting'. Pini
Zahavi, the influential agent who is close to Kenyon and helps Chelsea
sign players, was involved in both the Cole and Ferdinand talks.

[lfc-news] Rafa: We were unlucky not to win - Official Site

Official LFC Website, 16 April 2005
RAFA: WE WERE UNLUCKY NOT TO WIN
By Steve Hunter

Rafael Benitez felt his side played well and did everything they could
to beat Tottenham Hotspur and said they were just plain unlucky.

Benitez felt his team controlled the game in the second half and created
enough chances to win the match.

Benitez said: "We played a very good game. For the last 15 minutes of
the second half we played good high tempo football. The players worked
very hard and we had shots, got crosses into the box, missed a penalty.
Morientes missed two great chances and Luis Garcia had a really good chance.

"I thought we were unlucky and I am a frustrated manager. The only thing
is you must score when you have great chances."

The Reds boss also praised the contribution made by Xabi Alonso who
played 80 minutes.

Benitez said: "Xabi played well. At half-time he was a little tired and
I thought about taking him off but then he can the ball and make things
happen. He did very well and he is very important to us."

Steven Gerrard has held his hands up and accepted the blame after his
missed penalty cost the Reds the chance of three points.

It could have been a crucial victory for Rafa's men had Gerrard not
blazed his second half penalty high and wide after he had been sent
tumbling inside the area.

He said: "I'm very frustrated over the penalty miss because I should
have scored it. I'd like to apologise to the fans and the players for
not scoring. I blame myself for the fact we haven't won today.

"I decided to go for power and kept my head down as I ran to the ball.
The lads have told me their goalkeeper went early so if I'd looked at
him I would have been able to pass the ball in.

"The last time I took a penalty I went for placement and missed so
that's why I went for power this time. I think that's the end of me on
penalties from now on.

"I could have won it from open play as well with a shot which hit the
post, but it just wasn't my day today. I hope to get the chance to make
amends over the remaining games of the season.

"We dominated the last ten minutes of the first half and all of the
second so it's really disappointing that we haven't got the three points."
