Youngsters notch their fifth victory

KARL NOON scored the only goal of the match to give Liverpool under-18s
victory over Barnsley at the Kirkby Academy on Saturday.

John Owens's side secured only their fifth victory of the season in the
FA Premier Academy League.

With just one more Academy League match left Owens fielded a side very
much with next season in mind, with several schoolboy players, who will
be part of the U18s squad when they go full-time next season, involved.

But it was top scorer Noon who proved decisive on the day. He grabbed
his ninth goal in all competitions this season after 30 minutes when his
shot looped over the keeper via a deflection off a defender.

Liverpool continued to dominate the match, but failed to add to Noon's
strike.

But in the end it was enough to claim the three points.

Owens's youngsters will finish bottom of Group C table and face
Sheffield Wednesday in their final match this Saturday.

Owens said: "We had several of the under-16s in due to a number of
injuries, and obviously the U16s had to pull in the U14s and U15s. But
they did well.

"We were very much on top and scored after 30 minutes. It was a good
level of football overall.

"Initially, though, it took time to get going because with the younger
lads in it is a mix of players.

He added: "There are not so many who have played regularly together so
you don't get that quick start into normal team play that you would expect.

"It took a bit of time, but we did that and right through into the
second half we continued to play well.

"Unfortunately we couldn't get any more goals.

"We always looked very safe and Paul Lancaster didn't have much to do in
goal," added Owens.

LIVERPOOL UNDER-18s: Lancaster, Spearing, Hitchin, F Smith (Pringle 75),
Threlfall, Barnett, Hammill, Frayne, Noon, Barratt, Burns. Sub: Willis.
