PA Sport, 13 Aug 2005
Middlesbrough 0 Liverpool 0

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard waged a one-man war on 10-man
Middlesbrough but left Teesside with only a point to show for his
efforts as the European champions were held.

On another day, the England midfielder might have claimed a hat-trick,
but a combination of poor finishing, solid goalkeeping and bad luck
denied him the decisive goal his individual display deserved.

Gerrard could have won it as early as the 22nd minute, but fired over
the bar from from close range, and he then saw a looping header drop
onto the roof of the net with keeper Mark Schwarzer stranded after Ugo
Ehiogu had been dismissed.

And with only seconds of the 90 minutes remaining, he powered a header
across the face of goal with Steve McClaren's men wilting under the strain.

The Merseysiders always looked the more likely winners despite
under-achieving before the break, but with Gerrard upping the tempo and
substitute Djibril Cisse adding fresh impetus, just how Boro survived
was a mystery.

McClaren will feel it was a point well earned, but opposite number
Rafael Benitez headed back across the Pennines wondering how he was
doing so without all three.

Boro chairman Steve Gibson and veteran defender Colin Cooper officially
unveiled the restored Ayresome Park gates outside the Riverside Stadium
shortly before kick-off, although it seemed they had erected them in
front of Schwarzer's goal as the home side rode their luck to claim a
point which was greeted by the bulk of a crowd of 31,908 with delirious
celebrations.

Nine years ago, an expensively acquired Middlesbrough striker marked his
Premiership debut at the Riverside Stadium with a hat-trick in the
opening day fixture against Liverpool.

If Aiyegbeni Yakubu, a £7.5million signing from Portsmouth, had hopes of
emulating Fabrizio Ravanelli's feat, he showed few signs of doing so in
a tepid first half.

Schwarzer had one regulation save to make from former team-mate Bolo
Zenden and opposite number Jose Reina made his own difficulties by
flapping at a Stewart Downing corner and allowing Ehiogu to send a
deflected follow-up just wide.

Had Gerrard not wasted the best move of the opening 45 minutes when he
fired high over from close range after Fernando Morientes had perfectly
headed down Xabi Alonso's cross, the European champions would have been
well on their way.

Boro looked rusty as they struggled to get Yakubu into the game with
only Downing looking likely to contribute any meaningful supply, and
strike-partner Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's growing frustration was, as
ever, evident.

Zenden was inevitably booed at every opportunity from the moment he left
the team coach but his invention was clearly missing from a Boro side
which included Gaizka Mendieta for the first time since October last
year through injury.

McClaren's assertion that he still needs two creative midfielders -
Sporting Lisbon's Roudolphe Douala and Fabio Rochemback remain in the
frame - was eloquently illustrated, but in truth, despite Gerrard's
probing, there was little more on offer from the visitors.

Whether it was the sight of Cisse, Milan Baros and John Arne Riise
warming up on the sideline as the second half got underway which spurred
Liverpool on, they set about their task after the break with some relish.

Morientes tested Schwarzer with a speculative effort, but it was Gerrard
who led the fight, sending two shots, the second of them a well-executed
long-range volley, wide and forcing the Australian to pull off a smart save.

Cisse eventually arrived as a replacement for Luis Garcia with 58
minutes gone. Mohamed Sissoko latched onto a weak Ehiogu header and
drilled a 63rd-minute shot wide, but both managers moved to sharpen up
their attack after 67 minutes with Baros and Mark Viduka replacing
Morientes and Hasselbaink respectively.

Cisse was just unable to climb high enough to meet Sami Hyypia's header
back across goal after 71 minutes and Viduka headed straight at Reina
from a Downing corner two minutes later, but the balance of the game was
about to change again.

Ehiogu was caught flat-footed when Baros played the ball in behind him
to Gerrard after 74 minutes, and when he tripped the midfielder, referee
Mark Halsey had little option but to dismiss him.

Nemeth bravely blocked Cisse's shot from the resulting free-kick, but
when Jamie Carragher fed the ball into the box, Gerrard beat the
advancing Schwarzer to it but headed onto the roof of the empty net.

The Reds bombarded their hosts as the clock ran down, but despite
mounting a sustained assault, could not find the breakthrough with
Gerrard powering a header across the face of goal in the final minute of
normal time.

Middlesbrough: Schwarzer, Reiziger, Southgate, Ehiogu, Queudrue,
Mendieta (Nemeth 65), Parlour, Boateng, Downing, Yakubu (Bates 75),
Hasselbaink (Viduka 67).
Subs Not Used: Doriva, Jones.

GERRARD UNHAPPY WITH DRAW

Captain Steven Gerrard admitted Liverpool were far from satisfied with a
solitary point after the goalless draw at Middlesbrough.

The home side had defender Ugo Ehiogu sent off for bringing down Gerrard
as he surged through on goal but the European champions failed to
convert their dominance into goals.

"The idea was to go for goals if I got past Ugo," said Gerrard. "They
defended very well and it was unfortunate he had to be sent off.

"Last year they dominated us here. It was a good point but three would
have been better. On another day I could have got a couple of goals.

"Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United don't drop many points but this
was a tough opening game for us."

Boro skipper Gareth Southgate said his side had just been pleased to
"weather the storm" after Ehiogu's red card.

"It was a tough game today," he told Premiership Plus. "The first half
was pretty even but in the second half they started to get the upper
hand and we had to weather the storm.

"It was a huge hole to fill (when Ehiogu was sent off) but everyone dug
in. I don't think we got out of our own half until the last minute."

Reds manager Rafael Benitez dismissed the suggestion he was in the
market for former Liverpool striker Michael Owen after witnessing the
lack of cutting edge in front of goal.

"We have six strikers now," he said.

"And I am thinking about a centre-back rather than a centre-forward. At
the moment we only have Sami Hyypia and Jamie Carragher and they can't
play every game."

The Spaniard admitted he was disappointed his side did not win a game
they dominated, especially after the sending off.

"The last 10 to 15 minutes we were always in their half but their
goalkeeper was good and their defenders also."

FAMILIAR FOES FOR ZENDEN

Liverpool expect to have Bolo Zenden back in their side for the visit to
his former club Middlesbrough in their opening Barclays Premiership match.

The Dutch winger was left at home as Liverpool beat CSKA Sofia in
Bulgaria in midweek because of a thigh strain, but extensive treatment
means he is in the squad for the trip to the Riverside.

Manager Rafael Benitez still has Josemi (thigh), Peter Crouch
(hamstring), Djimi Traore (thigh) and Jerzy Dudek (dislocated elbow) out.

Boro new-boy Aiyegbeni Yakubu is in line for his competitive debut when
the European champions Liverpool visit.

The £7.5million signing is the only new face in Steve McClaren's squad
with Emanuel Pogatetz still fighting his 24-week ban, but Mark Viduka
(back and hamstring) and Gaizka Mendieta (knee ligaments) are in
contention after lengthy periods on the sidelines.

Ugo Ehiogu is expected to shake off a groin injury, but Chris Riggott
(knee) is a doubt with Matthew Bates standing by and Stuart Parnaby
(knee) is out.

Teams

Middlesbrough (from): Schwarzer, Jones, Reiziger, Queudrue, Southgate,
Ehiogu, Riggott, Bates, Boateng, Parlour, Downing, Doriva, Mendieta,
Morrison, Hasselbaink, Yakubu, Viduka, Nemeth, Maccarone.

Liverpool (from): Reina, Finnan, Carragher, Hyypia, Warnock, Zenden,

RAFA'S PREMIERSHIP PREVIEW
Paul Eaton

On the eve of the brand new season Rafa Benitez talks to Liverpoolfc.tv
about his hopes for the coming campaign at Anfield.

~ Rafa, the start of the new Premiership season is finally with us - how
excited do you feel?

I'm very excited. We have worked hard in pre-season getting ready for
this weekend. The players have done well and I'm sure they're all
looking forward to tomorrow's game. The first day is always exciting,
especially if you're playing against a good team.

~ How much more confident do you feel going into this season than you
were a year ago when you were unfamiliar with the Premiership?

I have a lot more confidence. I know more about the players, the teams,
the stadiums and the atmospheres inside the grounds. That means I can
approach our matches in a different way this season.

~ Has pre-season gone exactly to plan as far as preparing for this
weekend is concerned?

It was sometimes difficult for us because we needed to change our plans
and weren't able to go to Japan. In the end it's not been bad for us
because we worked hard in Switzerland, we played some official games and
won a lot of matches. We have enjoyed a good pre-season.

~ What's pleased you most about the games you've played over the last
few weeks?

I think the atmosphere between the players. It's really good. The new
signings have come in and have shown that they are good professionals as
well. The team spirit is really good.

~ You've scored 25 goals in eight pre-season games, does that statistic
give you confidence for the new league season?

Of course. We are more consistent now and we have been scoring goals in
all of our games. Hopefully we can take that form into the Premiership.

~ You've had a long trip to Bulgaria this week - has that made planning
for the Middlesbrough game more difficult than you'd ideally have liked?

It's been a little bit more difficult, that's true. But we have good
players who are in a very good physical condition. We want to see them
all fit but we know we have a strong squad and so we can bring in other
players if necessary.

~ Were you pleased with the performance your side gave in Sofia?

Yes. We played a good game. It was more difficult than people thought it
would be but we did a good job and earned a good result.
Fernando Morientes scored two good goals and he will have more
confidence now because it's always important for the centre forwards to
score.

~ Liverpool's recent record at Middlesbrough isn't good - how difficult
an opening day fixture is this for your side?

It's a difficult game but you must play against all the sides. We are in
a good position now, we have a better squad and a lot of confidence so
we're capable of getting a good result there.

~ You're keen for an improved away record this season, is Middlesbrough
the sort of place you need to be picking up points from?

It's too early to say that. We might lose tomorrow and then win our next
five. All I can say is it's important we play well, score goals and win
some games.

~ Where do you see the danger coming from in Steve McLaren's side?

The strikers. Yakubu and Hasselbaink are good players and they have
Downing to get the crosses in. They are a strong team and a good team.
It will be a difficult game for us.

~ Is there even more pressure to do well in the league this season
because you have the title of European Champions?

No. It just means we will have a lot more confidence, not more pressure.
We are Liverpool and that means we must win as many games as we can. We
know what we can do and now it's up to us to go and produce good
performances.

~ How important is it to get off to a good start and not find yourself
adrift of the leaders after the first fewweeks of the season?

That's true. We want to be in the top four as soon as we can and then if
we can get there we can start looking at what else we can fight for. The
important thing at the moment is just to concentrate on the next game
and look to start picking up points as soon as we can.

~ Are Chelsea the team to beat once again this year?

I think so. They are the champions, but Arsenal and Manchester United
are good teams as well. I hope it will be an exciting race for the title
and I also hope we can be involved.

~ Outside of the big four, which of the other teams do you feel can
challenge for a Champions League slot this season in the way Everton did
last year?

There are always teams who surprise you. This season I think Newcastle,
Bolton, Tottenham and Middlesbrough are good teams and they can do well
this season.

~ What can Liverpool fans realistically expect in terms of the
Premiership this season? Are we aiming higher than saying we just want a
top four finish?

My idea is to fight for as many trophies as we can. I don't want to just
say our aim is the top four. We have to win as many games as we can and
see where we can go.

Apprenticeship will ensure no surprises
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

RAFA BENITEZ responds to any hint of a Liverpool Premiership challenge
with such a technically efficient straight bat, it's a surprise he
hasn't received a call-up from Michael Vaughan.

The Liverpool manager won't discourage highly optimistic title talk, but
he's carefully avoiding inflaming it with extravagant claims about the
elusive 19th championship.

"I'm happy if people are saying Liverpool are a good team which will do
better in the Premiership," he says.

"If people are saying in three or four months time Liverpool can win the
title, I will be a lot happier. That will mean we are near the top of
the table.

"For now, my job is to continue to make improvements. I like hearing
people say we can win trophies. I will never say to anyone it's wrong to
dream about such things. At the same time, we know there are other
strong teams who have made new signings of their own.

"We need to believe we can beat any team. If we can defeat Chelsea and
Arsenal, we can win against any side. The task is to repeat that level
for nine months, not just in one game.

"We also know how difficult each game is. Our approach has to be the
same every week. If we repeat the results of pre-season, I will be happy."

On the eve of his second season in English football, Benitez oozes the
quiet confidence of a man sure he'll soon be breathing down the necks of
those who've monopolised Premiership honours.

Last year, Benitez admits he was forced to rely on scout reports and
videos before he could work out how to overcome the Middlesbroughs of
this world.

Twelve months on, the Spanish boss believes his apprenticeship in
England will ensure nothing will surprise him on these shores again.

And he's adamant the additions he's made to a squad still in the process
of evolution will trigger radical improvement.

"It will be easier because of last season's experience," explained Benitez..

"I know the systems and tactics each team favour. You can get this from
reports and watching videos, but when you've played against a team you
always learn more. Of course, it's always difficult no matter who you
play, but because of my experiences in my first year, I think it should
be a bit easier for us."

So what's the biggest lesson Benitez learned?

"When you see the results in the Premiership you know a team at the
bottom of the table is capable of beating a team in the top four. That's
the difficulty in England. No game is easy," he says..

"That's one of the differences between here and Spain.

"In Spain, the bigger teams can control the game easier because the
style of football is more technical and there are less long balls.

"What happened against us a lot last season was teams started matches
hitting lots of high passes and fighting for the second ball. They
caused problems and we didn't control the games away from home.

"This happens at every level in England. It's interesting to see that
Crystal Palace and Southampton lost in their league this week, yet they
beat us last season. This underlines what I'm saying. "You have to be
careful and be prepared for every game in England. Maybe you're a better
team with better players, but it's always very difficult to get results.
There were times last season when we didn't fight hard enough.

"This is why I've bought the players I have this summer. When I look at
the players I have now, I'm confident. Look at Sissoko. Look at the
energy he will give us. He is someone who will work hard and fight for
us every time he plays. "Crouch is a player who is good in the air and
will keep the ball in attack for us. When you think of the games we lost
away last season, maybe it's easy to understand why it's going to be
helpful to have players like this available to us.

"There are far more options for me with the team now, but I still want
to improve the side. We are trying to bring in at least two more players
if it's possible. If we do that, I will have two good players for each
position and we will always have a strong side."

Benitez is also banking on another factor which he believes could give
his side 20 per cent extra in the league.

"In my opinion, Steven Gerrard is a new signing," says Benitez.

"I'm glad I'm not going to have to waste my time in every press
conference talking about the future of Steven. Now he is happy, he is
scoring goals, playing well and focused solely on his team."

Middlesbrough will provide a tricky opening for Benitez's side. Such is
the fickle nature of the modern game, title chat will be silenced within
90 minutes if things don't go to plan at the Riverside.

"We are waiting for tomorrow with an excited sense of anxiety you get at
the start of each season," says Benitez..

"Because we've won a lot of games, we'll go into this season with a lot
of confidence. We are scoring goals and winning matches, but we know how
difficult the Premiership is.

"My message to the players is always the same. Our objective is to win
the next game. If we keep doing this, you will see a stronger Liverpool
and we can start to think about other goals.

"For sure, we intend to have a better season than last year in the
league. That means overall improvements are needed, particularly away
from home.

"I'm not going to say we'll come first, second or third. I will say we
intend to win a lot of games and then we'll see if this team has the
power to fight with those good teams at the top.

"What I want is for us to score more goals and prove we are more
consistent. In the Premiership we didn't do this, but I'm sure this year
we will be better. Last year we could win two games and then lose two.
Now I expect the team to play at the same level all the time."

So Rafa, should Liverpool fans seriously believe they're title
contenders this year?

"People must dream. That's what's good about football," he says.

Racists won't stop me - Cisse

DJIBRIL CISSE today condemned the racists who marred Liverpool's 3-1 in
Sofia last night and vowed: "They'll never grind me down."

CSKA Sofia are likely to be hit with a UEFA fine after the Reds made an
official complaint following the abuse aimed at their record signing.

Bulgarian supporters made monkey noises during the second half, and UEFA
delegates confirmed the incidents will be included in their match report.

Manager Rafa Benitez blasted the home supporters for their behaviour,
while Cisse branded his abusers 'stupid'.

"It's hurtful when it happens. It began when I tried to cross the ball
in the second half and they started to do all these monkey noises,"
explained Cisse, who scored Liverpool's opener.

"It's a shame this happens but there are a lot of stupid people
sometimes at these games and as a player you can't do anything about it.

"You can say UEFA should take stronger action when it happens, but I'm
not sure what they can do about it. You can't really stop these kind of
people doing this.

"It's not CSKA Sofia's fault and it's not their players' fault, so I
don't know what can be done. When it happens, I'm sorry for football
because no-one wants it.

"Normally I don't have this kind of problem. This is the first time
anything like this has happened to me in any game I've played.

"I think the only solution is to educate people so that they understand
they should not be doing this.

"I'm a strong enough person to deal with this and I don't let it affect
me. I'm just sad we have to talk about these issues rather than the
football."

On the pitch Cisse and Fernando Morientes struck to put Liverpool on the
verge of group stage qualification.

CSKA must now score at least three goals at Anfield on Tuesday.

Midfielder Xabi Alonso believes Morientes will silence the doubters with
a goal rush in the season ahead.

"It was a good night for Morientes," said Alonso. "It's always important
for strikers to score goals and they were very important for us. When
you are a striker at a big club, you will always get criticism if you
don't score, but he has remained focused and we're really happy for him.

"He's been the top scorer in the Champions League before and he has a
lot of motivation to repeat this with Liverpool.

"We all know how good he is." The Liverpool squad returned to Merseyside
this afternoon as the buildup begins to the Premiership opener at
Middlesbrough on Saturday tea-time.

[lfc-news] New Anfield deal for Hyypia - PA

PA Sport, 10 Aug 2005
NEW ANFIELD DEAL FOR HYYPIA

Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia has agreed a new contract which will keep
him at Anfield in 2008.

Finn Hyypia will sign the new deal on Thursday when he returns from
Liverpool's Champions League qualifier against CSKA Sofia in Bulgaria.

The 32-year-old, who joined Liverpool for £3million from Dutch club
Willem II in 1999, told Liverpool's official website,
www.liverpoolfc.tv: "Obviously I am very, very happy to agree a new
contract with Liverpool.

"We have been talking for a few weeks and I had no hesitation in
committing my future to Rafael Benitez.

"Everybody wants to play for Liverpool at the moment and it is an honour
to say that I will be here for at least another three years.

"I have won every single medal at the club apart from the Premiership
and it would be very nice if I could win that within the next three years.

"This is the greatest football club in the world and after Steven
Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Dietmar Hamann and Djimi Traore all agreed new
deals, I'm delighted to have done the same.

"These are good times for Liverpool and I'd like to repay the faith the
supporters have shown in me by winning more trophies."

[lfc-news] CSKA Sofia report - PA

PA Sport, 10 Aug 2005
CSKA Sofia 1 Liverpool 3

Fernando Morientes bagged two goals to move Liverpool to the brink of
qualification for the Champions League group stages.

The Spaniard scored a fine first-half header and then a predatory
close-range strike in the second period to give Liverpool control of
this tie ahead of the return at Anfield on August 23.

Strike partner Djibril Cisse put Liverpool ahead with his fourth goal in
five European matches this summer, but after Morientes' first, the
Bulgarians hit back with a close range header seconds before the break
from Velizar Dimitrov.

So it now looks as though Liverpool's long hot summer travelling Europe
in defence of the crown they clamed so magnificently in Istanbul in May
will have the reward they craved.

Boss Rafael Benitez, robbed of eight squad players through injury and
recovery from operations, put out the strongest side he could muster.

CSKA were quick and competitive while playing with three up front, while
Liverpool - mindful of the fast overlapping full-backs Benitez had
pinpointed as the dangermen - had John Arne Riise and Luis Garcia
hugging the flanks.

Twice early on Cisse had chances, lashing a shot at Evgheni Hmaruc, and
then with a 25-yard effort which went wide.

The hosts responded with a neat pass from Dimitrov which sent Guillaume
Zadi clear. Goalkeeper Jose Reina opted not to dive at the Bulgarian's
feet, forcing him wide and out of play.

The home pressure subsided when Liverpool got control of the ball, and
when they finally put together a passing movement with pace, they took
the lead.

In the 25th minute Steven Gerrard took a pass from Luis Garcia and
slipped the ball sideways for Cisse to cruise into the box and rifle it
into the net from a tight angle.

Liverpool were on top now and had Xabi Alonso dictating play from a deep
position with his long angled passes.

One found Steve Finnan wide on the left, and when the Irishman was
fouled, the resulting free-kick produced Liverpool's second just past
the half hour.

Captain Gerrard whipped the ball into the box and Morientes' renowned
heading ability saw him rise to clip a fine effort past Hmaruc.

Another goal at this point would have ended the tie as a contest, and
Gerrard almost forced his way through soon after before a fine Stephen
Warnock cross on the run just eluded Cisse in the box.

Another first time angled pass from Gerrard on 43 minutes nearly created
a third for Morientes, who sent a clipped header just wide of the far post.

But all the good first half work was wasted with seconds to go before
the break when Mourad Hidiouad got away on the left and sent in a cross
which Dimitrov nodded past an exposed Reina.

Liverpool found themselves facing fired-up opponents after the break and
Morientes wasted a glorious chance to restore the two-goal advantage
when he hit the outside of a post from 15 yards after Xabi Alonso had
sent him clear.

But the visitors did get a third goal in the 58th minute when an
excellent quick passing movement saw the ball move from Gerrard to
Cisse, back to Gerrard and then into the feet of Morientes six yards out.

This time the former Real Madrid man had the composure to turn and force
the ball through Hmaruc's legs for Liverpool's third.

Xabi Alonso was lucky to avoid a booking for a crude tackle - and when
he was brought down by Hidiouad seconds later, the Moldovan
international was cautioned.

The Spaniard was soon replaced by Dietmar Hamann and in the 69th minute
Benitez replaced Gerrard with Mohamed Sissoko - with Saturday's Barclays
Premiership opener against Middlesbrough in mind.

Liverpool replaced Morientes 13 minutes from time, bringing on another
defender in Spanish youngster Antonio Barragan for his debut.

Late bookings for Luis Garcia and Stephen Warnock preceded a fine
injury-time save by Reina from Evgeni Yordanov which preserved the
holders' two-goal lead.

GERRARD: "MOR" TO COME

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard believes more is to come from Fernando
Morientes after the Spain striker scored twice in the 3-1 win against
CSKA Sofia in Bulgaria.

Morientes' goals gave Rafael Benitez's side a great chance of reaching
the Champions League group stages after taking the advantage in the
first leg of their qualifier.

Gerrard told Sky Sports: "He's got ability, there's no doubt, his
all-round game was a lot better and there's a lot more to come from him,
definitely."

Djibril Cisse scored the other goal for the visitors, while Velizar
Dimitrov reduced arrears.

Gerrard set up all three goals, but added: "That's my job - to set up
goals and score, but the team performance was the main thing.

"We're happy with the score, we would been a lot more happy with a clean
sheet."

Gerrard almost suffered an injury celebrating Morientes' second strike
and he added: "When we were celebrating he nearly pulled my back out of
place, but everything is fine. We feel sharp and ready for Saturday
against Middlesbrough."

Liverpool centre-back Sami Hyypia added: "It was a good win but we can't
be 100% happy about conceding a goal. But in the second half they only
had a few chances.

"They are a good team and we knew it would not be easy, if you give them
space and time they can hurt you."

Liverpool boss Benitez was pleased with his players' performance,
adding: "The players concentrated and in the end it was a good result.

"They (CSKA) ran a lot and played good football. We have also did a good
job, it's important to score goals. We did a good job in defence and in
attack.

The former Valencia boss also believes Morientes will shine this season,
adding: "We're waiting to see him score goals in the Premiership, but he
had a very good game. We need to give him more crosses and we'll see the
best of him."

[lfc-news] Rafa: Nando needs help from the flanks - Echo

Liverpool Echo, 9 Aug 2005
Nando needs help from the flanks - Rafa
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

RAFA BENITEZ today urged his Liverpool side to do more to play to
Fernando Morientes' strengths as he defended his striker from pre-season
jibes.

Morientes has been the focus of attention following some under-par
performances during the first two Champions League qualifiers.

Benitez acknowledges there is far more to come from the former Real
Madrid striker, but believes part of the problem is the lack of
ammunition to his forwards from the flanks.

The summer pursuit of wide men, which is still ongoing, underlines the
manager's intentions to recruit players who'll provide the right service
to both Morientes and, when fit, Peter Crouch.

"We know Fernando can play better and he knows he can play better. He
wants to do that," said Benitez, who has dismissed claims he's
considered offloading his £6m signing.

"All the ingredients are in place to ensure we see the best of him this
season. When we put more crosses in the box for him, you will see a
better player.

"I don't think we need to change a lot of things to get more from him.
If you see our style, particularly at Anfield, we try to get players
wide and the idea is to get more crosses in.

"We need to do that far more at home and away. We also need to keep the
ball better. That's one of biggest problems away from home. The more we
have the ball, the more opportunities we will have to provide the right
pass to our strikers."

Morientes is hunting his first competitive goal of a campaign in which
Steven Gerrard, Djibril Cisse and Jamie Carragher are the only players
on target so far.

In the absence of Crouch, he's battling with Djibril Cisse for the
chance to lead the line tomorrow as a more cautious approach is expected
from the manager.

"We have more options in terms of the forwards and different
combinations. Morientes will benefit this season from having Crouch
alongside him," said Benitez.

"They are both good in the air but they're also comfortable on the ball.
It's a shame for Peter he's injured after just arriving, but he will be
fit soon and he'll show what a good player he is."

Benitez handed Milan Baros a late call-up to the travelling party
yesterday afternoon after a series of untimely injuries.

Bolo Zenden has been left out as a precaution with a groin problem, but
should be fit to face Middlesbrough this weekend.

Baros is the subject of renewed interest from Lyon who'll be hoping the
striker doesn't feature in Sofia, thus leaving him cup-tied for the rest
of the European campaign.

Benitez insists he'll have no qualms about thrusting Baros onto the
pitch if needed, but his participation is highly unlikely and his
inclusion may have more to do with prompting Lyon to match Liverpool's
£7m valuation.

Youngster Antonio Barragan has also been named in the squad.

"I was talking to Pako Ayesteran and he was saying he's been doing well
in training and what a good player Antonio is for the future," said
Benitez..

"We are short of players right now so we have called him up."

CSKA Sofia will clearly offer a more testing challenge to the European
Champions than the minnows of Wales and Lithuania.

Liverpool have the advantage of travelling away first, but Benitez is
warning his side of the perils of facing a side with a European pedigree
which includes a famous Anfield scalp 23 years ago.

"We know this team is good with a very offensive mentality. I hope we
don't see their attacking players too often," said Benitez.

"This will be a step up and bigger test for us so we must be careful.
This is the most important round of all. There are more quality sides in
the competition now.

"We have trained for a month, but really the difficult games start now
and we must be ready."

* Rafa Benitez, meanwhile, has hit out at the red tape which has blocked
Chilean winger Mark Gonzalez's move to Anfield.

The Reds agreed a loan deal with Albacete for the 20-year-old, with a
view to a permanent £3m move, but a work permit application was thrown
out last week.

Benitez slammed the decision, saying: "How can you play for your
national team, be the best player for your country, play in the Spanish
league and not be good enough for the Premier-ship? I don't understand.

"We spent six months scouting the player and as Champions League winners
we think he can improve our team.

"At least 50 per cent of the players in the Premiership are worse than Mark.

"It is impossible for anybody to say he has no quality. You can only say
that if you know nothing at all about football."

The panel which made the work permit decision includes former
Huddersfield Town striker Mark Lillis and ex-Chesterfield and Ipswich
manager John Duncan.

[lfc-news] Dudek out for three months - PA

PA Sport, 8 Aug 2005
DUDEK OUT FOR THREE MONTHS

Liverpool's Champions League final hero Jerzy Dudek has been ruled out
for three months after dislocating his right elbow in training.

The accident happened at the club's Melwood training complex on Monday,
and the player was initially treated at the ground and then taken to
hospital.

The Poland goalkeeper will now be out of action until November, ruling
out any prospect he might be sold before the transfer deadline.

Dudek has been replaced in the side by Spaniard Jose Reina - and Scott
Carson also now seems to be ahead of him in the pecking order - but he
has said he wants to stay at the club.

And despite interest from Sporting Lisbon, boss Rafael Benitez has so
far been happy to keep the man whose penalty saves against AC Milan
secured the European Cup in Istanbul in May.

He has not yet played in Liverpool's Champions League qualifiers
however, with Benitez still reluctant to cup-tie him in case a good
offer comes in.

Yet any prospect of the player leaving Anfield will now have to wait
until the January transfer window.

Benitez said: "The incident happened virtually in the last minutes of
training."

Dudek has two years left on his contract. Liverpool's other senior
goalkeeper Chris Kirkland has joined West Brom on loan for the season.

Liverpool spokesman Ian Cotton said: "Jerzy has a fracture-dislocation
of his elbow. He saw a specialist on Monday afternoon and will see
another specialist on Tuesday for further investigation. He will be out
of action for three months."

[lfc-news] Lyon back in for Baros - Echo

Liverpool Echo, 8 Aug 2005
Lyon back in for Baros
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

MILAN BAROS is edging closer to the Anfield exit as French duo Monaco
and Lyon battle for his signature.

The Czech striker could leave within the next 48 hours, with former boss
Gerard Houllier re-igniting his interest in the £7m rated striker.

Houllier is keen to pair Baros with John Carew and the lure of Champions
League football is thought to be tempting the 23-year-old.

Monaco, who play in a Euro qualifier this week, have also registered
their interest although no firm bid has been made.

Anfield officials say interest in the forward has increased over the
weekend and a move abroad is the most likely outcome after Premiership
duo Aston Villa and Everton dropped out of the chase.

Baros has again been withdrawn from the squad travelling to Bulgaria
tomorrow as his future looks to be resolved.

Funds from the Baros transfer have already been set aside to pay for a
new centre-half, although the Reds' chase for Deportivo's Jorge Andrade
is likely to end in frustration. The Spanish side insist their defender
is not for sale.

Manager Rafa Benitez is mulling over several alternatives as he
desperately seeks cover for Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia.

Luis Figo's decisionto join Inter Milan rather than the European
Champions has also left Benitez with a headache on the right side of
midfield.

Numerous alternatives have been proposed, with Bolton's Stelios
Giannokopolis once again linked with the Reds over the weekend. However,
a move for the Bolton winger is highly unlikely.

Seville's £6m rated Brazilian winger Daniel Alves is on Benitez's wanted
list, but once more, Liverpool's approaches have been frustrated by his
side's unwillingness to sell.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have suffered an injury blow with defender Djimi
Traore expected to miss the first month of the season.

Traore has a thigh strain which will rule him out for a minimum of four
weeks.

Steve Warnock and John Arne Riise will fight for the left back position
in Sofia and Middlesbrough.
