[Liverweb] Reds reach Youth Cup Final

Liverpool's youngsters are into the final of the FA Youth Cup after
goalkeeper David Roberts emulated Jerzy Dudek's Istanbul heroics by saving
two penalties, in a heroic 5-4 shoot-out win over Southampton at St Mary's.
Liverpool were seconds away from reaching the final in normal time but an
own goal from Jack Hobbs in the fourth minute of stoppage time earned
Southampton an equaliser. It was so unfortunate for Hobbs who had a
magnificent match on the night and didn't deserve that moment of
misfortune. A cross came in from the right hand side and Hobbs, on the
stretch, turned the ball past his own goalkeeper David Roberts to earn the
Saints a lifeline. That made the scoreline 3-3 on aggregate and forced
extra-time.

Then after the aggregate scoreline of 4-4 at the end of extra-time,
Liverpool won the penalty shoot-out thanks to the brilliance of Roberts.

Paul Barratt, Charlie Barnett, Michael Nardiello, Adam Hammill and Stephen
Darby all scored from the spot for Liverpool

Liverpool were magnificent on the night and deserved to win the game in a
match that had so many twists and turns. Steve Heighway's team will now
hope to match the Michael Owen/Jamie Carragher inspired team of 1996 that
won the FA Youth Cup.

It was one of those games that you couldn't take your eyes off for a minute
as there were so many goalmouth scrambles and heroic defending from the
likes of Hobbs and Godwin Antwi at the back for Liverpool.

The fighting spirit of the Liverpool players was fantastic and the young
lads just kept fighting and fighting. They suffered another blow 10 minutes
into the first period of extra-time David McGoldrick scored his second goal
of the game from close range to put Southampton 3-1 up. However the young
Reds responded almost instantly and Robbie Threlfall rose high from a
corner to head home to make it 3-2 and the aggregate equaliser at 4-4.

Liverpool had played really well in the first half and things had looked
rosy when Craig Lindfield gave them a fourth minute lead to make it 3-1 on
aggregate. The outstanding Adam Hammill started the move and when Charlie
Barnett threaded a superb through ball into Lindfield's path, the striker
did the rest with a cool and composed finish.

Liverpool had the chances to increase their scoreline but Adam Hammill and
Ryan Flynn were both denied by brilliant saves from Saints keeper Zach Jones.

Just past the hour mark Southampton equalised when Adam Lallana set up
David McGoldrick who tapped in from close range.

The Reds then had to withstand incessant Southampton pressure in the second
half as the home side threw everything but the kitchen sink at the
Liverpool defence.

Steve Heighway's young heroes were excellent on the night against
Southampton, on a freezing night at St Mary's, and thoroughly deserve the
accolades that will come their way after this victory.

It took Liverpool's young starlets just three minutes to open the scoring
and make it 3-1 on aggregate.

It is a wonderful achievement for Liverpool to make the final of the FA
Youth Cup and the combination of home grown talent and Rafael Benitez's
signings Jack Hobbs, Paul Anderson, Godwin Antwi and Miki Roque has worked
a treat.

Liverpool Academy Director Steve Heighway made one change to his team from
the first leg with Paul Barratt coming in to strengthen the midfield, in
place of 16-year-old right winger Ben Parsonage.

As a team Liverpool were outstanding on the night and the players worked so
hard for each other and were so desperate to reach the final of the FA
Youth Cup.

Hammill was a constant menace to the Saints defence all night from the left
wing and was denied a deserved goal in the second half when he was denied
by a fine save from Zach Jones.

It was a fantastic game of football and the youngsters have done the club
proud.

Team Stats : The Reds will be aiming for their 20th awayleague win
over Newcastle in this one.

The Reds have a good overall record againstnewcastle in League
football. Only three other teams have been defeated more than
Newcastle.

Solely looking at premiership games between the two sides the Reds
have won 60% of the points on offer.

Should the Reds win this game then they will have taken more points
off Newcastle than any other team.

Away from home the Reds haven't beaten Newcastle away from home
since the 2001-02 season.

That year the Reds completed a league double over Newcastle.

A win for the Reds this time round would also comeplete a league
double over Newcastle. That would be the Reds' 18th of all time.

The Reds have failed to score just three times away from home in
Premiership games at Newcastle. However two of those three have come
in the last three visits to St James's Park.

Only the Reds league win in 2001-02 have the Reds kept a clean sheet
away in the Premiership.

[Liverweb] New date for Blackburn

Liverpool FC have confirmed that their Premiership game at Blackburn
Rovers has now been moved to Sunday 16th April, kicking off at 2.30
pm.
Chief Executive Rick Parry commented: "As soon as we were knocked out
of Europe and other fixture dates became available, we contacted both
Blackburn Rovers and the FA Premier League and we're delighted it has
been possible to reschedule the game.

"With the match being move for a second time, there is obviously a
degree of inconvenience for Blackburn Rovers and their supporters and
we are very grateful for their co-operation and understanding of the
issues involved.

"We were always aware of the feelings expressed by many of our
supporters on the original date and are glad we have been able to
address these concerns."

The Reds finally hit the scoring charts last night against Fulham as
they hit five past the visitor's. In truth 5-1 flatters the Reds but
not because Fulham were great but because this game was dull and for
me the Reds simply didn't play any good football. When they did they
tore through Fulham with ease.

The Reds made five changes to the side from Sunday which saw Agger
come in to the centre of defence and Fowler start up front. The Reds
were missing Alonso through some stupid suspension gained when Steve
Bennett was looking the other way.

The Reds won the toss and elected to defend the Kop end in the first
half. Tony Warner was in goal for Fulham and having seemed to
disappear at one point arrived in his goal and the match started.
Inside the first minute Garcia raced in to the box and won a corner.
Garcia had the ball in the net a minute later but the assistant ref
on the centenary side flagged offside.

The Reds started quite well and looked to set off at a good pace. On
nine minutes Morientes was played in on goal but only managed to get
the ball lost in his feet and the chance went begging. Simply
because of the way our luck has been of late you started wondering
if this was another night of missed chances.

On fifteen minutes the ball was sent crashing home from Robbie
Fowler. Harry Kewell did exactly what we should do every time from a
corner and played it in to the box. It was headed on by Garcia and
Fowler headed home from thee yards out. The crowd went wild, as did
Robbie and his scoring return duck is over.

This had to be the springboard now for better things but Fulham dug
in a little. The Reds though had more chances as Hamann volleyed
over the bar and then Morientes hit the side netting after Fowler
had played hi in.

Fulham got themselves back in the game on twenty five minutes.
Gerrard stupidly lost the ball in the centre of the pitch. With the
Reds exposed John was played in round the back of Agger and he
finished past Pepe Reina. Time to start again now.

Michael Brown was booked on the half hour mark by ref Alan Wiley for
an elbow on Kewell. Brown was a little over psyched for this one.
The Reds were half losing the battle in the midfield and failing to
keep a good passing move going. Then on thirty four minutes they
went back in front. Kewell drove the ball across the area and Brown
tapped it home with Morientes looming behind him.

Fulham had a couple of decent chance before half time to equalise
for a second time but their shots went just the wrong side of the
post from their point of view. Half time reached and surely we could
up the tempo a little and put the game beyond doubt in the second
half.

The Reds got the second half underway and in the first minutes
looked to have upped the pace a bit. Just four minutes in to the
half and Garcia bent a superb shot over and past Warner only to see
it rebound out off the crossbar. With just one goal in front of
Fulham it was tricky to put this one to bed. The game got duller as
the Reds went longer to hit Morientes up front. Fowler and Morientes
were both working hard to win the ball but it's hard to do
everything at this point.

There was a major scare for the Reds on sixty one minutes when Zat
Knight rose superbly well but his header hit the post and the chance
went. It was a wake up call though as the quiet crowd started to get
restless. The Reds had big penalty appeals on sixty eight minutes
when Bridge appeared to handle the ball in his own box but the
claims were waved away.

The Reds then made the first change of the night with Fowler being
replaced by Cisse. This move was greeted by boos from some sections
of the ground but this did the players no good at all. Inside two
minutes the Reds were three one up and the decision to leave
Morientes on was justified. Cisse saw his initial header on goal
well saved and after Garcia and Agger failed to hit the rebound
Morientes smashed the ball home in to the roof of the net.

It was only at this point that the game seemed to stretch more in
favour of the Reds. Fulham's away form this year has been shocking
and it showed through now. Crouch came on for the final ten minutes
for Morientes. Crouch himself was on the score sheet eight minutes
later. Cisse crossed the ball to the far post where Gerrard drilled
in a shot and Crouch guided it in from a yard out. Suddenly the
scoreline looked very positive indeed.

The score got even better in the final minute when Stephen Warnock
scored. Warnock had only come on just before the Crouch goal. He
found himself free in the box to slam home a rebound after Finnan
had found himself jinking through the area to shoot. His shot was
saved and Warnock stepped up and scored with his right foot. Warnock
was clearly ecstatic by the look of his celebration and rightly so
for the best finish from a Red on the night.

In injury time their was nearly a bit of a kick off and frankly it
was all caused by the Reds being stupid. At 5-1 up you don't play a
corner to hold it up at the corner flag but Gerrard and Finnan did
just this. It clearly wound up the Fulham players and the home fans
who didn't like this. As the game finished there was nearly a mass
brawl between players and Benitez even ended up walking down the
pitch to show his disgust at his own players.

All in all this was a comfortable scoreline that flatters the Reds a
bit. It hides the fact that some of the football in this one was
awful stuff and that the Reds didn't play enough quality football.
When they did Fulham folded up and conceded.

MotM : Robbie Fowler - worked his socks off and got off the mark as
well which was great to see. It was his all round movement though
which swayed my final choice tough. For me Agger also deserves
credit for the way he has settled quickly in to the game.

[Liverweb] Blackburn Game Move?

Liverpool have requested permission for their Premiership clash at
Blackburn Rovers on April 15 to be switched to another date.
The Reds had always hoped to find an alternative date for the game
to avoid a clash with the annual Hillsborough Memorial service at
Anfield, but a hectic fixture schedule ultimately made it impossible
and a kick-off time of 5.15pm proved to be the best solution.

With the Reds now out of the European Champions League, more dates
have been freed up in the club's footballing calendar and Chief
Executive Rick Parry has revealed they are now working to see if the
Ewood Park clash can be moved to a new date.

"This is an issue we were aware of right at the start of the season
and that's why we contacted the Hillsborough Families' Support group
last June and they said they accepted that, sadly, one day it might
be an inevitability that we'd have to play on April 15th," Parry
told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"We are aware of the significance of the day and, as I said at the
AGM, the solution we came up with was the best of a very bad range
at that time.

"When we were progressing in the FA Cup and the Champions League the
problem of finding a new date got bigger.

"Now we are out of Europe, there may be some scope to look once
again but it's not just our fixtures to consider, it's Blackburn's
as well and this is their home fixture at the end of the day.

"Even at this stage, if there's a chance to revisit it then I'm
prepared to do so and we have already been in touch with the Premier
League and Blackburn to ask the question."

Head to Head - Premiership Head to Head
LAST corresponding Fixture : Liverpool 3 Fulham 1

Squads : Xabi Alonso is missing for this one after referee Steve
Bennett refused to change his mind on the sending off at the
weekend. John Arne Riise is still missing through injury as well.

Liverpool : Reina, Finnan, Carragher, Hyypia, Warnock, Traore,
Agger, Luis Garcia, Gerrard, Hamann, Kewell, Kromkamp, Fowler,
Crouch, Morientes, Cisse, Dudek

Fulham : Warner, Volz, Knight, Goma, Bridge, Radzinski, Malbranque,
Boa Morte, McBride, Helguson, Crossley, Rosenior, Bocanegra, Elrich,
John, N Jensen, Pembridge.

Team Stats : Fulham have never won at Anfield and arrive having been
defeated at the weekend across the park at Everton 3-1. This loss
kept up a very poor Fulham record on Merseyside. In league football
they have never beaten either the Reds or the Blues.

In the previous four encounters between the sides at Anfield in the
Premiership the Reds have won two and drawn two conceding just one
goal in the process.

If Fulham were to win they would complete their first ever league
double over the Reds.

In the Premiership the Reds have kept three clean sheets from the
four game at Anfield. However the Reds have failed to score on two
of those occassion as well. In all league games at Anfield there is
only one more game when they failed to score at least once - back in
1958-59.

Player Stats : Harry Kewell will hope to play his 75th league game
for the Reds in this one.

Luis Boa Morte is the leading scorer on three in this fixture of the
players still at either club.

Three players have been sent off in premiership games between the
two sides but never at Anfield. Alain Goma, Luis Boa Morte and
Josemi have all walked in the away fixture.

Tony Warner will hope to keep goal for Fulham. It is the first time
he will keep goal for a first team at Anfield despite having played
for Liverpool for years in the mid to late nineties. Warner in fact
sat on the bench throughout 90 Premiership games without once being
used. This is a Liverpool record.

Referee : Alan Wiley

Betting : Liverpool 3/10, Fulham 15/2, Draw : 16/5

Liverweb Prediction : Liverpool 2 Fulham 0

The Reds slumped to a late 2-1 defeat in their last ever visit to
Highbury. Arsenal were the better side over the full course of the
game but the Reds had battled to get back in to the game again at 1-
1. However a Red card for Xabi Alonso change the context of the game
and when Steven Gerrard played a back pass to Thierry Henry the game
was gone.

The Reds came to Highbury on the back of the Champions League exit
hoping to get a win over Arsenal. The home side got the game
underway and were by far the better side. The Reds first opportunity
for the Reds came on two minutes when Finnan crossed in for Crouch
but the ball was nicked off his feet. Arsenal were up for this one
and they were passing the ball about really well. On three minutes
they carved the Reds wide open but Henry's cross shot went straight
to Reina.

On seven minutes Henry exposed Hyypia for a lack of pace and charged
down their right hand side before cutting the ball back to Adebayor.
Thankfully though the striker spooned his shot over the bar. From
the resultant goal kick Reina made a hash of his clearance and then
Warnock played an even worse ball back to him. That is apart from
the fact it was so bad it flew out for a corner.

The Reds simply weren't at the races and were struggling to get hold
of the ball and do anything with it. They did create one decent
chance on fourteen minutes however when Warnock played a cross in to
the near post for Garcia but the ball just evaded him and hit
Lehmann instead. Arsenal were then forced in to a change as
Ljungberg went off to be replaced by Pires.

Arsenal took the lead on twenty minutes through Thierry Henry and it
was a class goal. Fabregas split the Reds' back line open and after
Carragher just couldn't quite get the ball Henry was free and bent a
great shot past Reina to the back post. It was a goal the home side
deserved on the balance of play really. After this they did continue
to create chances but they weren't clinical enough when it really
came down to it. This would give the Reds hope and they slowly got
in to the game more.

Peter Crouch should have equalised just before the half hour mark
when Finnan crossed in to the box. The tall striker was unchallenged
in the box but couldn't direct a decent header on goal. The Reds
nearly paid heavily for that minutes later when the home side carved
the Reds open again. They just tried to be too clinical and ended up
too close to Reina. Eboue had to square the ball which allowed
Finnan in to blast the ball clear.

Luis Garcia had a chance on thirty five minutes and once again it
was a Finnan cross that provided the chance. The ball went to the
back post where Garcia volleyed over the bar. On thirty eight
minutes there was a moment of panic went through me as Kolo Toure
flew through the air to get to a ball before Warnock. Toure got
their first and thankfully got no contact with the player. This was
a woeful tackle that he got away with because the ball was just too
far in front of Warnock. Yet it was Warnock who the crowd booed for
some reason.

The Reds needed a change at half time as the system wasn't quite
working fluidly enough and we needed to score at some point as well.
Harry Kewell came off the bench to replace Kromkamp. The Reds got
the game underway again and tried to go at Arsenal more which was
better to see. At the other end though Arsenal threatened to pick
the Reds off on the counter attack. Henry went clean through on
fifty three minutes but shot straight at the keeper. A minute later
and Adebayor was in but his pull down allowed Hyypia a chance to get
in and nick the ball away.

The Reds were starting to get a good hold in to the game now and
pass the ball about but we weren't threatening the keeper much.
Bergkamp replaced Adebayor on sixty seven minutes and within a
minute had a chance of scoring but he skied his shot over the bar.
Robbie Fowler came on after seventy three minutes as the Reds looked
to push on. He replaced Hamann which allowed the Reds to play more
of a 442 formation. About a minute after the change and the Reds
were level. Arsenal cried for a free kick as Fabregas lost his
balance. Alonso jumped in and gave the ball to Gerrard who hit a
great shot on goal. Lehmann punched the ball up in to the air and
Garcia followed up quickest to head home.

The Reds grew from the goal and looked to build on the goal and
maybe even win it. Xabi Alonso picked up a booking on seventy six
minutes as he was late on Fabregas. It was a genuine attempt but it
was a touch late. Garcia went close with a volley on seventy nine
minutes off a Kewell cross but the speed was taken away from Flamini
getting in the way and it dropped to Lehmann.

On eighty one minutes the game was turned upside down as Alonso was
sent off. Senderos went to clear a ball and did so. As he cleared it
Alonso fell over and accidentally hit Senderos. The referee turned
round and thought there must have been foul play and showed a second
yellow card. This was a shocking decision from a referee clearly
looking the other way and reacting to crowd noise. This simply must
get rescinded although why the linesman never intervened I don't
know. The lino after all seemed to be level with the incident.

Within two minutes of the sending off the Reds were behind again. A
shocking back pass from Gerrard went straight to Henry who rounded
Reina and scored. Getting back in to the game had been hard enough
but now we were down to ten men there was no way back. Arsenal had a
couple of chances to even make it three one but Pires hit the post
late on and Reina saved an Henry free kick in the final minute.

As the final whistle blew it was disappointment ultimately. Arsenal
had played well but failed to finish chances off. A bit like the
Reds in general really. It gave us a chance to get back in to the
game and when we did you actually thought we could sneak a win even.
Then came the sending off which changed the course of the game. We
then conceded a poor second goal to cap off a bad end to the game.

MotM : Jose Reina - did well and not really at fault for either
goal. However his commanding of the box and speed off the line
helped to keep the score down and gave us a chance.

[Liverweb] Youth Cup News

Liverpool are in pole position to reach the final of the FA Youth Cup after
goals from Jack Hobbs and Craig Lindfield gave them a hard fought 2-1 win
over Southampton in the 1st Leg of the Semi Final at Anfield tonight.

Steve Heighway's side took charge of this match with two goals in the
opening 13 minutes and although McGoldrick pulled one back for Southampton
they will be pleased to be taking a lead to St Mary's for the return after
a tough match.

The young Reds swept aside Carlisle 6-0 in the last round, but they will
have expected a much tougher assignment against a Southampton side that
went all the way to the final last year before being beat by Ipswich.

It was the Saints who threatened first when McGoldrick hit a long range
shot over in the first minute, but Liverpool were soon making inroads of
their own when some good control and a smart pass from Anderson almost
created a chance for Lindfield.

That proved to be a sign of things to come because the Reds soon took a 6th
minute lead through defender Jack Hobbs. It came when Adam Hammill won a
free kick on the left and he picked himself up to cross to Hobbs, who
finished into the top corner with a clever flick of the boot.

The goal was a catalyst for a series of Liverpool attacks and they doubled
their advantage in the 13th minute through Craig Lindfield. Lindfield was
the hero of the last round when he scored a hat trick and he was on the
scoresheet again tonight when sliding in to convert Barnett's cross.

The Reds were well on top, but Southampton did come here with a good
reputation and they slowly managed to claw their way back into the game and
McGoldrick had a shot deflected just wide.

But while the Saints were playing with a lot of promise, it was still
Liverpool who were creating the game's most dangerous moments and Lindfield
almost made it 3-0 in the 35th minute. The chance came when Paul Anderson,
whose pace was to cause problems all evening, sped down the right and
crossed to Lindfield, who stabbed the ball just the wrong side of the post.

The second half kicked off with Southampton in the ascendancy and they got
themselves back into the game in the 54th minute when David McGoldrick ran
through to make it 2-1 with a low finish. There was no disputing Saints'
supremacy in the first quarter of the second period and it took a great
save from Roberts to stop Dutton-Black making it 2-2 soon after.

The Saints continued to press hard for an equalizer and De Carvalho and
McGoldrick both went close as the Reds struggled to wrest control of
midfield. Heighway replaced Parsonage with the fresh legs of Ryan after 70
minutes as his side attempted to regain the poise they had in the first half.

But it was their visitors who continued to carve out the better chances and
they again came close to equalizing in the 81st minute when Dutton-Black's
long range effort came back off the inside of the post and flashed across
the face of the goal.

Liverpool responded with an attack of their own and Anderson forced the
Saints' keeper into a good save with a left footed shot. But Heighway
sensed that further fresh legs were needed and he replaced Lindfield with
Nardiello late on.

In the end the Reds had done enough to merit their victory and they will
travel to Southampton in seven days time with a real chance of making their
first FA Youth Cup Final since 1996.
