Head to Head - Premiership Head to Head
LAST corresponding Fixture : Manchester United 2 Liverpool 1

Squads : Jose Reina is available again after suspension and Peter
Crouch hopes to be available after injury. Robbie Fowler is cup tied
and can't play. There are also concerns for the Reds over Warnock,
Kromkamp and Agger.

Team Stats : The Reds haven't beaten United in the FA Cup since
1921. That year the Reds needed a replay at Old Trafford to knock
them out and then they lost in the next round.

The only other Reds win over United was actually when they were
known as Newton Heath. That win came in 1898.

Since the Reds' last FA Cup win United have beaten the Reds on seven
occassions. Their winning tally included cup final wins in 1977 and
1996.

Looking at all games United do have the edge over the Reds with 64
wins to 54. The Reds haven't beaten United since a Danny Murphy
penalty secured a 1-0 league win at Old Trafford. Murphy, in that
game was also the last Red to score against United. Since then A
John O'Shead goal is all the Reds have to show for their troubles.

In cup games the Reds can look back to the last two cup encounters
with some joy. In 2001 the Reds defeated United at the Charity
Shield and then in 2003 win the League Cup Final in Cardiff by
beating United 2-0.

You have to go back to 1850 for the last cup game played at Anfield.
In the League Cup the Reds won 2-1 thanks to two gaols from Jan
Molby.

The two games this season have seen a 0-0 draw at Anfield and only a
few weeks ago came a late United winner from Rio Ferdinand.

The Reds are just two goals away from scoring 150 under Rafa
Benitez.

Player Stats : Both Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia have the most
experience in the FA Cup of those available to play in this one for
the Reds. Both players have played 20 FA Cup games.

Steven Gerrard leads the Reds' scoring charts of those who are
eligible to play. He has 3 goals in 15 games.

Referee : Howard Webb

Betting : Liverpool 7/5, United 7/4, Draw : 19/10

Liverweb Prediction : Liverpool 1 Manchester United 0

A Luis Garcia strike four minutes from time ensured the Reds got a
deserved win over Arsenal at Anfield. Valentines night saw a
swelling of the female support in the crowd including my better half
as Arsenal came to town and quite frankly I can't remember a poorer
Arsenal for a long while. Pre-match saw a ground remembering Bob
Paisley who died ten years ago - 14th February 1996. A list of his
honours was read out - something none of today's manager's can match
that's for sure.

The Reds won the toss and defended the Kop end in the first half
which saw Arsenal kick off. There seemed to be an extra spring in
the step of the Reds on the night to win control of the midfield. If
we could win the midfield you snuff out their front line too and
heap pressure on the back line. On two minutes Dudek was out of his
goal well and headed clear, not knowing if the ball he got was a
back pass or not.

Many of the Reds' chances were headers on the night but nothing came
to fruition. Morientes headed wide after three minutes and then
Fowler also headed wide five minutes later. Arsenal looked to calm
the pace down whenever they could. Lehmann seemed to be missing ball
boys at the ground as he just seem to refuse to collect any ball
that wasn't within a six inch radius of his body.

Arsenal had a superb chance on eleven minutes to open the scoring
when Toure sneaked in at the far post unmarked but headed over the
bar. The worrying part of that move was how he just ghosted in and
didn't seem to enter anyone's zone. Kewell and then Riise both had
efforts on goal but neither overly troubled Lehmann. On twenty one
minutes there was so nearly an own goal from Senderos. He
accidentally looped a header over Lehmann and just as it looked
destined for the back of the net the German keeper got back to claw
the ball away.

Arsenal's main threat was always going to be from Henry but he just
didn't look interested in the game at times. When he was sent
through on the half hour he failed to get the ball under control and
allowed Dudek to collect the ball with ease.

The Reds were awarded a penalty on thirty two minutes when Morientes
was barged over in the area. It seemed a bizarre decision in that it
seemed to take Graham Poll an age to give it. Gerrard took the ball
after no-one else offered to take the kick and after a quick jig hit
his shot left where Lehmann flung himself to save. Gerrard just
didn't look at all confident with the kick and it didn't surprise me
at all when it was saved.

The miss seemed to dent the Reds a little and the half slowly came
to an end with nothing much doing at all. There was no need for half
time changes though as the side were getting at Arsenal enough and
making them look very poor. The Reds back line was strong with both
Carragher and Hyypia performing well although Sami's distribution
left a lot to be desired at times.

The Reds got the second half underway with no changes made by either
side at half time. The Reds came out the same way as the fits half
and kept probing the Arsenal back line although were often too slow
in trying to create anything. That said the front line was poor and
Morientes at the moment is playing exceptionally slow and poor.
Passing the ball around the midfield helps you get so far of course
but then you need strikers to finish things off. Fowler had a couple
of really good efforts well saved whilst Morientes seemed to be
struggling to wake up. Perhaps he was too busy listening to Madrid
and a portable radio or something. Perhaps he really is just that
past it and not set for the Premiership?

Fowler went really close on fifty one minutes when he shot from a
Gerrard pass but his shot was excellently saved from Lehmann who was
in inspired form. If it wasn't for him this could have been four nil
perhaps. On sixty three minutes Morientes headed wide of the goal
with a glancing header from a Gerrard cross. Freddie Ljungberg was
the one and only booking on the night as he cynically hacked Kewell
down from behind and had the cheek to moan.

The Reds made their first switch on seventy two minutes when Hamann
replaced Alonso. Xabi had looked a little jaded at times and looks
desperate for a rest if nothing else. A few more sleeping pills are
called for I think to help the great midfielder on. Two minutes
after the switch Kewell forced Lehmann in to another fine save at
his near post. Kewell had an overhead kick turned out for a corner
by the Arsenal keeper.

Cisse replaced Fowler up front for the final ten minutes as the Reds
looked again for a way through to the net. The one fear you had in
the back of your mind was that if Arsenal suddenly got one move
right they could score and rob the Reds of the three points. Riise
hit a shot from outside the box straight at Lehmann on eighty three
minutes. A minute later and Morientes dithered in trying to volley
home and the chance was gone.

Luis Garcia arrived on eighty four minutes for Sissoko and the move
paid off for the Reds within three minutes. Hamann hit a superb shot
to the bottom corner of the net but a fully stretched Lehmann got a
hand to it. Garcia reacted quickly and slammed the ball in to the
back of the net although Lehmann had got across but couldn't keep it
out. The crowd went wild and all of a sudden Arsenal seemed intent
on doing things quickly. Having seemed to waste as much time as they
could up until this point they then raced to everything, collected
loose balls for throw ins and everything.

Arsenal did put some pressure on the Reds but nothing too major.
That said a corner late on did have you fearing a goal against.
Arsenal got what they deserved though which was nothing. As the
final whistle blew the Reds could celebrate a win and a happy
Valentines night for the Reds.

MotM : Jamie Carragher - played superbly well at the back as ever
and this vote was swayed by my better half confirming the quality of
the latest player to reach 400 appearances. Momo Sissoko also had a
good game after a poor start to break a lot of the play up.

In other news the U18 side lost yesterday unluckily to Manchester
City. The away tie was actually played at the Reds academy and
despite Paul Barratt scoring for the Reds City manage to scrape an
undeserved 2-1 win.

The Reds have now confirmed the chage to Adidas in the summer for
kit manufacturing. The deal will see a whole new range of goods
from Adidas ratherthan Reebok. No money value of the deal has been
revealed as yet. It will of course also involve a change of seats
in the Anfield Road end to eliminate the Reebok sign.

The Reds will, subject to a medical definitely sign Gabriel Paletta
in the summer. A deal with his club Banfield has been agreed and
the defender who starred in the U20 world cup will play the closing
championship with them until the summer.

Next weeks tie with Benfica is likely to see the Portugese side
without Geovanni. Benfica are currently second in their
championship and have recently got back to winnings ways after two
consecutive defeats.

Jose Reina has insisted that he hopes his former side Barcelona
thrash Chelsea. The Reds star is still fuming over the sending off
down at Chelseaand hopes Barca score four in each game over them.
Here Here!!

Finally the Reds are trying extremely hard at the moment to change
their April 15th match with Blackkburn. April 15th of course is the
anniversary of the Hillsbrough disaster and the Reds had asked the
Premier league for no game but they ignored us. now the Reds are
working on a new date for the game with Rovers who from all accounts
are trying to co-operate.

Hillsbrough may have happened 17 years ago but the fight for justice
goes on.

<http://www.liverweb.org.uk/afchdhd.htm>Head to Head -
<http://www.liverweb.org.uk/arsenalprem.htm>Premiership Head to Head

LAST corresponding Fixture :
<http://www.liverweb.org.uk/arsh0405report.htm>Liverpool 2 Arsenal 1

Squads : Peter Crouch is a doubt through a heel injury whilst Luis Garcia
is definitely still out with a knee problem. Stephen warnock is fit again
after a minor groin injury.

Jose Reyes is out for Arsenal with a bruised foot whilst Denis Bergkamp has
a slight calf strain. Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Eboue are back in the Arsenal
squad after their trip to the Afrocan Nations Cup.

Team Stats : The Reds have just one win over Arsenal in the last eight
games. That win did come last season though at Anfield thanks to a late
winner from Neil Mellor.

In thirteen home premiership games the Reds have recorded seven wins, three
draws and three losses. The Reds score at just under two a game at Anfield
against Arsenal and concede just less than one goal a game.

Only once in this premiership fixture have the Reds come from behind to
win. However they have lost a match having led on two occassions.

The biggest victory at Anfield for the Reds in the league over Arsenal came
in 1964 when they won 5-0. Peter Thompson got two of the 5 goals that day.

Arsenal's biggest win at Anfield was a 5-1 victory back in 1952.

A win for the Reds would take them to 900 points overall in the Premiership.

If the Reds were to score three goals in this game it would take the Reds
to 150 under the managerial reins. So far the 147 goals thus far have come
in 103 games.

If the Reds score one goal it will mean Arsenal have conceded 250 in the
Premiership away from home.

Player Stats : Jamie Carragher will hope to play his 400th match for
Liverpool in this game.

Momo Sissoko will hope to play his 20th league game in this match.

If Steven Gerrard is subbed in the match it will be the 50th time he has
been subbed in the Premiership. Only Smicer and Owen were ever subbed more
than Gerrard.

Robbie Fowler has nine goals for the Reds in the league against Arsenal. He
is the leading scorer from either side.

Jamie Carragher, Xabi Alonso and Peter Crouch are all one booking away from
a suspension for the Reds. Steve Finnan is one league booking away from
double figures in a Reds shirt.

Referee : Graham Poll - nineteen games so far this season and shown 78
yellow cards and four Red ones. Hast taken charge of two Liverpool games
this season - the away win at Everton and home loss to Chelsea. For Arsenal
games he has taken charge three times overseeing a win, a draw and a loss
for the Gunners.

Betting : Liverpool Evens, Arsenal 12/5, Draw : 2/1

Liverweb Prediction : Liverpool 1 Arsenal 0

The Reds returned to winning ways away to Wigan in the days early kick off.
With a couple of better finishes this scoreline could have been bigger and
been fair still. Wigan tried hard through the second half but the Reds dug
deep and took all three points.

Wigan fielded two former Reds in Henchoz and Thompson but struggled to find
strikers due to loan deals, injuries, suspensions and non returning
players. The Reds gave a first start to Robbie Fowler since his return o
Anfield and also welcomed Steven Gerrard back to the midfield.

Wigan got the game underway. The game wasn't exactly free flowing as the
Reds tried to get the game under control from the first whistle. The pitch
cut up quick and made the playing surface very uneven and at times dangerous.

On six minutes Alonso played in Gerrard who chipped a ball to Fowler who
was free in he box. However the ball was blocked and the hand ball shouts
were ignored by Rob Styles. The first action for either keeper came on
fourteen minutes when Fowler tamely headed to he bottom corner of the net.
The save was all too easy for Pollitt. Minutes later and Dudek was out
quickly to clear his lines.

Midway through the half and Gerrard ad Fowler linked up but made a hash of
the final ball to se the chance go missing. Gerrard took the ball off
Fowler and when a shooting chance looked on he tried to pass back to Fowler
but the chance sailed to Pollitt. A minute later and Fowler was put through
the middle but as Morientes also went for the same ball and started from an
offside position the flag was forced to go up and the chance was gone.

The first of two ex-Reds booked came when Davie Thompson was booked on
twenty five minutes for a deliberate trip on Finnan as he looked to break
forward. Just two minutes later Henchoz followed him in to the book for a
clumsy challenge on Morientes who was forced off for treatment.

The free kick awarded resulted in the goal. Hyypia and Carragher went
forward but the initial free kick was half headed clear. As the ball was
pushed out to the half way line it was pushed from Finnan to Carragher.
Jamie then whipped the ball over his head to the area where Hyypia had
stayed and he volleyed home low under Pollitt. The lead was deserved and
for once taken.

The state of the pitch became quite worrying five minutes from half time as
Gerrard started limping. He seemed to go over his ankle a bit making a run
to the line. The Reds had another great chance to score just before the
half time whistle. Fowler moved out left and picked a ball up. He then
crossed the ball to the penalty spot where Morientes came in and volleyed.
Either side of Pollitt was it was a superb goal but it just went to straight.

The Reds got the second half underway and as you would expect the home side
were out of the traps far better in the second half than than the first.
The Reds had been getting to every loose ball quite easily in the first
half and merited their lead. The second half was quite different though.

Just one minute was on the clock when Dudek had to tip a header over the
bar. A great save although the offside flag had gone up anyway. Within
thirty seconds Dudek was again involved. Teale had been identified by Wigan
as the man to attack the Reds by Riise. His cross was punched clear by the
big Pole but he also hit a Wigan player on the way and went down. The ref
blew up and treatment was given to Dudek who managed to continue.

On forty eight minutes Dudek was again forced to tip a header over the bar.
Another Cross from the Wigan right found Johansson free in the middle of
the box but his header was straight at Dudek who tipped it over the bar. At
the other end a minute later Kewell lost his footing just as he was about
to shoot and blazed wide from a good position on the edge of the area.

The Reds tried to get back their domination of the midfield now and on
fifty three minutes Fowler fed Gerrard a ball through the back and his shot
from the edge of the area brought a good save from Pollitt once again. The
game was starting to open up a lot more now. On fifty five minutes Rob
Styles had to hold play up whilst he changed his arm vibrator which had
obviously gone faulty.

Dudek was superb on fifty six minutes in getting down very quickly at his
near post. He was forced in to the save as Hyypia mis kicked a clearance
and it threatened to go in at the near post. Wigan were trying to keep
pressure on the Reds but couldn't quite create that direct opening. De
Zeeuw twice went close with headers but Dudek wasn't tested on either.

The Reds made the first change on sixty six minutes when Jan Kromkamp came
on for Fowler. Fowler had worked hard and made some intelligent runs across
the back line. As his fitness gets sharper he's sure to be found more with
his runs. On seventy minutes Cisse replaced Morientes.

On seventy two minutes it was down to Rafa to show everyone how to bring a
ball down. Wigan cleared the ball from their area and out of play. Rafa was
stood as usual in his technical area and brought the ball down instantly.
It was great skill and perhaps the players should learn from the master.

The best chance for the Reds in the second half came with eleven minutes to
go and it was again Sami Hyypia who had it. He jumped well to head a
Gerrard corner on target but once again Pollitt was on hand to make the
save. Alonso was there ready for a tap in had he fumbled it though.

The last ten minutes saw the game get very stretched and Wigan tried their
best to break the Reds down but we were standing tall and letting nothing
past us. As time ticked right down it looked just as likely that the Reds
would score as it did Wigan.

The final whistle went and the two game losing streak was brought to a halt
with a hard working performance. It wasn't vintage at all but the job was
done which was the main thing. Wigan put up a good fight but ultimately
with so many players out they struggled a little. You can only beat what's
in front of you though and the three points is the most important.

MotM : Dietmar Hamann - a rock as ever in the midfield and showed great
composure at times to break so much of the play up and move the Reds forward.
