[Liverweb] Site Addition

I've added a brand new page to the site today which highlights Honours won
by individual players whilst playing at the club.

It's not necessarily complete but that's where you come in. If you know of
an honour given to a Red player then mail me back and let me know.

The page is here

http://www.liverweb.org.uk/playerhonours.htm

Also on the site as well in the Kits section these days are a few adverts
from the ever changing kit. I'll keep adding to these as and when I find
more but for now the page is here. Of course if you can help with nay of
the pictures let me know.

[Liverweb] Luton Town Match Preview

Liverweb FA Cup Match Preview
Opponents : Luton Town
Date : Saturday January 7th @ 5.30pm
Replay Date if necessary - Tuesday 17 January @ 7.45 pm
Venue : Kenilworth Road
TV Coverage : BBC1, Al Jazeera Sport 2, 3+, Viasat Sport 1 SE, TV3 Norway,
TV SportRO, ESPN Pacific Rim, Supersport 3SA, Sport 2 Hungary, C+ Blauw,
Sky Calcio 3, Supersport 2, Diema 2, Sport TV

A history of Liverpool v Luton.

Looking specifically at the FA Cup there have been five matches. Three of
those five came in 1987 when Luton won a second replay at home following
two nil nil draws.

The sides also met back in 1920 and 1939 when the Reds won each time.

January 1920

In 1920 the Reds travelled to Luton for a second round tie and won 2-0.
Billy Lacey scored after just ten minutes to get the Reds started and then
doubled the Reds lead on sixty eight minutes to give the Reds a 2-0 win.
The game is said to have taken place in the rain but the fans from both
sides packed the ground out. Some 12,460 turned up and were all in a good
hour before the game. The Reds got the game underway and it was after just
ten minutes when Lacey converted a Sheldon corner.

Luton had their chances in the game mainly through Rutherford but he
couldn't convert anything. Before Lacey had doubled the lead Luton did have
the ball in the net but it cam direct from a corner kick and was thus
disallowed back in those days. The Reds went on to reach the 4th round that
season where they lost to Huddersfield Town.

January 1939

This game saw the Reds drawn at home to Luton and the Reds ran out 3-0
winners. The game was in doubt at some point as the weather at the time was
very cold. However milder weather in the area meant the pitch was playable.

The game started well with both sides looking to get the first goal. That
first goal didn't come though until the 54th minute thanks to Jack Balmer.
The goal came after the Reds were awarded a free kick which Nivvy
Nieuwenhuys took. Kop banter as ever came at the free kick. As it was given
for a foul on Fagan they decided to throw snow balls at the Luton offender.
Balmer headed home the free kick.

The goal dented Luton quite a lot and eventually it was all just Liverpool
attacks. However the goal wouldn't come for the Reds. Luton threatened to
come back in to the game but their hopes were dashed on 83 minutes when
Paterson scored. Finally in the last minute of the game Balmer raced in to
the area to smash home a Nieuwenhuys cross. The Reds again progressed two
rounds before being knocked out 4-1 by Wolves.

January 1987

Cup holders Liverpool were handed a tricky game away to Luton to start
their defence of the trophy. The Reds of course had to put up with the
awful plastic pitch at Kenilworth Road. Snow circled around the ground for
the game which was being shown on TV on a Sunday afternoon.

This match up was hardly enthralling though and ended 0-0. Luton were the
better side on the balance of the game but Mick Harford, Mike Newell
(current manager and ex-Red reserve), Ricky Hill and Brian Stein all went
close for the Hatters.

On to the replay and here was a wait of just over a fortnight for the
match. Snow down in Luton and their insistence of flying on the day of the
game meant that a completely clear Anfield pitch was not played on. When
Luton finally came up to Liverpool tat fortnight later they managed to grab
a 0-0 draw. The Reds were the better side on the night but just couldn't
find a way past Les Sealey in the Luton net.

On to a second replay and rather than going to a neutral ground Luton
insisted on tossing a coin to determine the venue for the next match. Luton
won and played at Kenilworth Road. Another trip to the plastic pitch and
this time the Reds were battered. Brian Stein opened the scoring on 33
minutes after a Gillespie foul. The Reds tried to chase the game but never
settled fully. 12 minutes from time Molby brought Stein down in the area
and Mick Harford converted the spot kick. Three minutes later an Mike
Newell completed the scoring.

League Form

There have been twenty eight league games between the sides. The Reds have
won 13 of these and Luton 6. Luton have never won at Anfield. The last
fixture came back in 1992 before Luton were relegated. The Reds won that
day 2-1 thanks to goals from Dean Saunders and Steve McManaman.

Back in October 1983 the Reds recorded the biggest victory in the fixture.
Anfield witnessed Ian Rush score 5 goals as part of a 6-0 win.

The Reds currently lie 3rd in the Premiership whilst Luton occupy 9th spot
in the Championship. The Reds finally failed to win last time out at Bolton
but did manage a 2-2 draw. That is the first time they have failed to win
since they lost the World Club Championship Final in December Prior to that
they did lose at Championship side Crystal Palace. Last season they also
lost to Championship opponents when a less than full strength lost at Burnley.

Luton have lost their last two games against Watford (1-0) and Ipswich
(2-1). Their last league win came at home against Brighton on the 28th
December. They won that one 3-0. That win was their first for a month since
they had beaten Palace at home.

Luton man to watch - Steve Howard - nine goals so far this season - six of
which have come at home. He is mostly a first half scorer - 6 of 9 have
come before the interval.

Looking at Luton overall they have score 40 goals in 28 league games so far
this season. However they have conceded 39 goals in the same period. They
have scored 3 penalties and kept just 6 clean sheets all season.

In contrast the Reds have kept 14 clean sheets from nineteen league games
so far this season. From those games they have scored 28 goals and conceded
just eleven.

Squads : The Reds have Jan Kromkamp available if necessary for this tie.
There are no fresh injury worries ahead of the tie though. Fernando
Morientes may return after injury but is not certain. Scott Carson may be
given a rare start in goal.

Luton have major doubts over Rowan Vine and Chris Coyne still. Peter Holmes
is a slight doubt for the game but should be fit.

Team Stats : This is the Reds' 390th FA Cup game in all. So Far they have
won 207, drawn 85 and lost 97. In that time they have scored 633 goals and
conceded 361.

If the Reds were to score twice they would hit the 1500 mark in all cup
competitions.

This game will be the Reds 36th competitive game of the season.

Player Stats : Xabi Alonso and John Arne Riise will look to play their 30th
games of the season.

Steven Gerrard leads the scoring charts with 15 all season. He is currently
scoring at a goal every other game. Gerrard is one of only two current
squad members to have scored in the FA Cup. They each have just a single goal.

Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia have each played 18 FA Cup games for the
Reds and lead the way of the current squad.

Cisse, Morientes, Alonso, Reina, Garcia, Crouch, Carson and Sissoko have
yet to play in the FA Cup for Liverpool.

Referee : Mark Clattenburg

Betting : Liverpool 2/5, Luton 6/1, Draw : 11/4

Overall Trophy Winners : Liverpool 13/2, Luton 300/1

Liverweb Prediction : Luton 0 Liverpool 2

[Liverweb] News Latest

The Reds have now completed the move for Jan Kronkamp after the
Dutch defender passed a medical at Anfield yesterday. He will be
unveiled at a news conference today. He will be eligible for the FA
Cup game at Luton on Saturday.

Dan Agger is expected to complete his move to the Reds at the
weekend for £5.5m Paul Anderson has completed his switch tot he
Reds as well with John Welsh completing his switch the other way to
Hull City.

This weeks teletext article went off last night which is below in
unedited format.

The hectic festive period is now over and 10 points out of 12 is a
good return. It has kept us right up there at the top of the
table. The last two games were the hardest for us over the time I
have to say with one hoping for a draw and the other finally
clinging on to one. We are certainly improving though and that is
something to take in to 2006.

The first weekend ahead of us of course leads to a new competition
and all eyes are on the team selection. That of course comes
because of last year and the match at Burnley. I don't think the
same mistakes will happen on the pitch this year though and Rafa
will take the game very seriously. The competition deserves respect
and that is what will come across I think. The tie of course sends
our minds back to 1987 and hopefully this time there won't be any
snow to contend with.

The transfer window of course is open and we've been active already
signing on Paul Anderson and Jan Kronkamp. One is obviously for the
future for now but it will be interesting to see how much of an
impact the Dutch right back makes. Both have arrived in swap deals
and I'd like to wish John Welsh especially good luck in his career
at Hull. I always had high hopes for him but it just wasn't to be.
Now the eyes are fixed on the transfer door to see who's next - Dan
Agger by all acounts.

[Liverweb] Bolton Match Report

Liverweb Match Report

Bolton Wanderers 2 Liverpool 2

Liverpool : Reina, Finnan, Carragher, Hyypia, Traore, Gerrard(C), Sissoko,
Hamann, Kewell, Pongolle, Crouch

Subs Used : Garcia for Pongolle (62), Alonso for Hamann (65), Cisse for
Sissoko (84)

Subs Unused : Riise, Carson

Ref : M.Clattenburg

Att : 27,604

Start stuff. The Reds made four changes to their starting lineup with
Traore, Hamann, Sissoko and Pongolle all starting. The Reds looked a tired
side at times in this game on a very poor pitch. It wasn't a great game
though with neither side looking great.

Liverpool got the game underway but didn't really start very well. After a
slow start the Reds went behind after just ten minutes. A very poor free
kick was given against Finnan. Somehow Stelios who jumped at Finnan was
given a free kick for an alleged obstruction. The free kick was swung in
and Reina seemed to have an easy catch but somehow he misjudged the flight
of the ball and dropped it. As he went for the loose ball Hyypia also went
to clear it and it moved a few inches to Jaidi who headed home.

The Reds had a really good period of pressure midway through the half and
as ever it was started through Steven Gerrard. On twenty three minutes he
met a shot perfectly but it hit against Gardener who simply was just in the
right place at the right time. In the next move for the Reds Hamann hit a
shot destined for the bottom corner but Jaaskelainen managed to get across
and turn the shot away for a corner kick.

The problem for the Reds was that this spell of pressure just didn't last
long enough. The game was a bit too scrappy at times to get good football
and the pitch certainly didn't aid that side of things but you know what
you get at Bolton.

The next chance of note in the first half then fell to Traore who, having
found himself in space midway in the Bolton half got the ball. Traore took
it on a couple of steps before shooting and Jaaskelainen was forced in to a
great save. Deep in to first half stoppage time the Reds had another chance
to score when Jaaskelainen came racing out to beat Pongolle to a ball but
hi touch was woeful. Kewell picked up the loose ball and lobbed it back in.
Pongolle tried to head it on but missed and by this time two men were back
on the line to clear up the danger.

The Reds were slow to start in the second half but slowly started to play
football more and that got the Reds back in to it. Three minutes in to the
half it was nearly time for the sub keeper as Reina made his way a little
close to the edge of the box handling the ball. As he slid to gather a ball
he skidded out of the area but thankfully the Red's keeper managed to spot
this and let go of the ball in time.

The Reds made a couple of subs just past the hour mark. First of all Garcia
came on for Pongolle on sixty two minutes. Three minutes later Alonso came
on for Hamann. In between the two subs Kewell went really close with a shot
after cutting inside his man. Straight after Gerrard had a shot on goal but
it went just wide as the Reds were upping the pace more and more.

The Reds got back into the game through Steven Gerrard. Gerrard was brought
down by Joey O'Brien on sixty six minutes. Referee Mark Clattenburg had no
second thoughts in awarding the stone waller. Kewell had found Gerrard with
a great pass and as Gerrard got to the area he upped a gear o get past his
man. O'Brien had slid in and knew straight away it was a penalty. Steven
Gerrard picked himself up and slotted home a penalty low to the right hand
side. It was comfortably past the Bolton keeper but his run up or walk up
at east certainly worried me.

The Reds were now well back in to the game and the fans were full of noise.
It sadly lasted just four minutes though as Bolton scored against the run
of play. This was an absolute disgrace of a goal though as the offside flag
was very notable by its absence. Kevin Davies was a mile offside but
somehow it wasn't given. Davies broke down the inside left with Carragher
trying his best to get back. Davies centred the ball for Diouf who managed
to hit the ball past Reina courtesy of a rebound. Reina will be
disappointed for this goal to I think as he didn't come out and command the
cross properly. Sometimes you just have to take everyone out and grab the ball.

The Reds were suddenly back on their heels again but had to get the ball
back down again and try and pass it around. This really wasn't helped by El
Hadji Diouf who fell over at the slightest touch or breath of fresh air
near him. What was so poor here was that Clattenburg fell for it every time.

The Reds though battled hard and were back in the game on eighty three
minutes and it was well deserved. Luis Garcia who had a stinker on Saturday
took a great shot and saw it fly into the back of the net. Garcia had come
inside off the right flak and with Gardener initially wrong footed Alonso
found him with a great pass. Garcia instantly took the ball back inside to
get past Gardener running at him the other way before lashing a great shot
in at the near post.

Cisse came on for the last six minutes as the Reds continued to look for
all three points. Cisse in fact had a great chance to score. Gerrard
floated a ball in to the area for him and Cisse guided the ball goalwards
only to see it go just past the wrong side of the post. The Reds continued
to push forward but it just wasn't going to happen in the end. Bolton
wasted what time they could as they realised they were right up against it
and got away it.

Al in a draw was probably just about fair although the Reds did create
enough chances to win the match and certainly late on showed more appetite
for the three points than one. It ended the run of consecutive wins sadly
but at least we got one point from the match and can move on to the next
game. It's FA Cup football next week so the league will have to go on the
back burner for now.

MotM : Steven Gerrard - inspired the Reds to ensure they at least came away
with a point in this encounter.

[Liverweb] West Brom Match Report

Liverweb Match Report

Liverpool 1 West Bromwich Albion 0

Liverpool : Reina, Finnan, Carragher, Hyypia, Riise, Alonso, Gerrard (C),
Kewell, Garcia, Crouch, Cisse

Subs Used : Pongolle for Kewell (66), Sissoko for Crouch (80), Traore for
Cisse (88)

Subs Unused : Hamann, Carson

Att : 44,192

Ref : A.Wiley

The Reds saw off West Brom with a solitary goal on New Years Eve at
Anfield. The result could easily have been bigger had it not been for
Kuszczak in the Albion goal. Albion clearly turned up for a point which
made the game very difficult but they left with nothing despite trying hard
near the end of the game.

The Reds won the toss and defended the Kop end in the first half. Albion
got the game underway and from the start set their stall out for a point as
they threw eleven men behind the ball. This made it rather difficult for
the Reds who struggled at times to make the break through. Had they hit a
high tempo and passed the ball about I'm sure the goal would have come far
earlier than the 51st minute.

It was fourteen minutes before the Reds had a really good effort on goal.
Harry Kewell hit a rasping shot which bent in the air and Kuszczak could
only deflect over for a corner. It started a spell of pressure for the Reds
and the keeper was at the thick of it.

A minute after Kewell had a shot he was at it again but the keeper was
again on the spot to save the day for them. The Reds were starting to up
the pace again but there was one position that seemed gaping every time to
hit - the inside right channel. No player used the space and chances were
often at a distance.

Midway through the half the Reds played a corner from the main stand side
to the edge of the area. Riise side footed the ball past everyone but saw
the ball rebound back of the foot of the post and after a second save the
keeper grabbed the ball under pressure from Crouch. The keeper was treading
a fine line with referee Alan Wiley as he seemed to take longer and longer
for every goal kick.

As the half wore on the initial talk before the game of we should be
hitting this lot four and five nil suddenly changed to I'll take a scrappy
one nil of someone's backside here. With so many men between the Reds and
the net it was a hard job and half time arrived scoreless.

The Reds were out first for the second half and raring to go. They looked
to up the tempo a bit as well. Just five minutes in to the half and Gerrard
made the one run that had been missing all first half - that inside
channel. He raced through and forced a corner to which would eventually
lead to the Reds goal. Although the initial corner was cleared the Reds
remained up field. Riise broke forward but losing the ball nearly he was
forced to push the ball wide to Kewell. Harry who was on top form in the
game got the ball and crossed it into the middle. A perfect ball was headed
home by Crouch and all of a sudden relief raced around the stands.

West Brom were forced to come out and play a little bit more now they were
behind. They didn't race out though and seemed to be just as inclined to
keep the game at one nil than to try and get it to one all. With the Albion
pushing out a bit more the Reds managed to create a few more chances as
they dominated possession hugely.

Crouch, Cisse and Gerrard were all on target with efforts but Kuszczak
wasn't going to be beaten a second time. On seventy three minutes the luck
was really on the side of he keeper as he managed to keep out a Crouch
header with his trailing leg.

As time wore on the away side slowly started thinking they could snatch
something. Ellington was sent on late in the game to inject a little pace
to their side but as the stats shows Pepe Reina never had a shot on target
to save all game and that says a lot about both him and his defensive line
in front of him.

In season's gone by you would have been sat petrified on the edge of your
seat wondering when the opposition would score but although you weren't
completely comfortable at the end it was relatively easy. The one worry at
the end of the match was when Cisse limped off injured and with Bolton
coming up on Monday the worry was that's two strikers out injured now.
Thankfully not goal machine Crouch though!

MotM : Harry Kewell - continuing his best form he looks to be getting more
confidence again and I can't remember the last time his name was chanted so
much on the Kop. That should boost is confidence no end.

Gardner, Giannakopoulos, Speed, Faye, Nolan, Nakata, Davies, Diouf, Walker,
Hunt, Okocha, Vaz Te, Fadiga, Borgetti.

Team Stats : The Reds have failed to win the last two away at Bolton. Their
last win was in 2002-03.

In the Premiership the Reds have won 2, drawn 2 and lost 2 of the away
games with Bolton. In the process they have both scored and conceded eight
goals.

There tends to be at least three yellow cards shown in this away game every
year. So far twenty cards in six games have gone up. Robbie Fowler is the
only player ever to be sent off against Bolton in the Premiership.

This will be the 120th meeting between the two sides in all competition.
The Reds have slightly more wins than Bolton - 46 to 42.

At Bolton in the league the Reds have won 16 and lost 24 with 12 draws. The
Reds' biggest win over Bolton away was a 4-0 win way back in Septemeber
1907. Bolton's biggest win was a massive 8-1 win over the Rds at Burnden
Park way back in 1932. Daniel Mcorie scored the consolation goal for the
Reds that day.

The Reds need just two goals to hit the 350 mark away from home in the
Premiership.

A win for the Reds would ensure Rafa Benitez has amassed over 100 points in
charge of the Reds in the league.

Player Stats : Both Steven Gerrard and Sami Hyypia have two goals against
Bolton. No BOlton player has ever got past one against the Reds.

Luis Garcia needs one to hit the 20 goal mark for the Reds. A ha trick for
Peter Crouch would take him to double figures for the season.

Jose Reina and Jamie Carragher are the only ever presents in the league for
the Reds so far this season.

Reina has conceded just a goal every other game away from home in the
league this season on average. Of the nine games though the five goals
actualy came in just three of the games - Birmingham and Fulham saw two
each whilst Everton on Boxing day scored once. All other games have been
shut outs.

Referee : Mark Clattenburg
