Liverpool Echo, 3 June 2005
Reds found not guilty
EXCLUSIVE by Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL have been acquitted of the charge of failing to control their
fans at last season's notorious Carling Cup tie at Millwall.

An investigation into the violent scenes at the New Den on October 26
cleared Liverpool FC of any wrongdoing.

However, Millwall are currently in the process of appeal having been
found guilty of the same charge by an FA panel.

The FA are still refusing to make a statement confirming Liverpool's not
guilty verdict, claiming Millwall's ongoing appeal means the matter has
not been concluded.

However, the ECHO understands the decision was made as long as a month
ago - before three Liverpool fans were jailed for their part in the
violence.

Whatever the outcome of Millwall's private appeal, the FA won't overturn
the Reds' verdict.

In addition, the FA's initial hearing in April concluded Millwall's
supporters DID subject Liverpool's black players to racist abuse.

Djimi Traore was one of the victims during the 3-0 victory, which
visiting supporters later claimed triggered the clashes between
Liverpool and Millwall fans.

Liverpool supporters also complained of sick chanting regarding the
Hillsborough disaster, a claim Millwall's then chairman Theo Paphitis
strongly denied.

Anfield chief executive Rick Parry was among the officials who had to
give evidence at a three-day hearing in April.

The club vigorously contested the charges, pointing out that control of
supporters in all sections of the stadium was the responsibility of the
home club.

The Liverpool fans who attended the fixture may now feel their
complaints about being sinned against rather than sinners are vindicated.

The not guilty verdict concludes an excellent fortnight for Liverpool's
travelling supporters, erasing the only dark shadow over their season.

Last week, they received worldwide acclaim for their behaviour in
Istanbul where there wasn't a single arrest before, during or after the
European Cup final with AC Milan.

The FA's punishment for Millwall will be closely monitored given their
forthright condemnation of the racist comments of Spanish coach Luis
Aragones earlier this season.

Rafa eyes big man
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL target Peter Crouch's future will be resolved after crunch
talks with Southampton as Rafa Benitez edges closer to a shock swoop for
the target man.

Crouch has emerged as the surprising name near the top of Benitez's
summer shopping list, with a £5m bid likely if the striker decides to
leave relegated Saints.

Feyenoord's Dirk Kuyt has also attracted the Liverpool boss, but he's
equally interested in the new England cap who he believes could be a
solution to the European Champions' away day woes.

Benitez believes the lack of height and strength in attack was a key
reason behind his side's poor away record last season.

He wants a target man who'll relieve the pressure in Premiership away
games, having reached the conclusion Fernando Morientes needs more
assistance leading the line.

While Crouch's public image may not make him an instantly attractive
option for Liverpool fans seeking star names, Benitez's scouting reports
on the striker have been exemplary.

The 24-year-old made his England debut in America, linking with
exstriker Michael Owen to create one of the goals and Benitez believes
there is more to 6ft 7 inch player than heading skills.

Crouch's salary was halved to just over £4,000 a week due to
Southampton's relegation. His wages could be quadrupled if he moved to
Anfield.

Southampton manager Harry Redknapp is making a last minute effort to
keep Crouch this week, holding talks which will make the striker's
future clearer.

"It's not going to be easy for Crouchy, but I just hope he will be
patient and stay with us until at least January," said Redknapp today.

Liverpool will be monitoring those development closely over the next few
days.

Liverpool Daily Post, 2 June 2005
UEFA official says no to Liverpool's inclusion
By Ian Doyle, Daily Post

LIVERPOOL'S hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League have
been given further heavyweight backing from abroad.

But a prominent UEFA official has admitted he does not want to see
Rafael Benitez's European Cup winners given the chance to defend their
trophy.

Dr Joseph Mifsud, a UEFA committee member of 11 years, believes it is
too late to change the rules to accommodate Liverpool next season.

The Anfield side are expected to discover their fate before UEFA's
15-man executive committee meet in Manchester on June 17.

UEFA president Lennart Johansson has voiced his support for Liverpool's
inclusion, but Dr Mifsud - who is president of the Malta FA - is against
it,, and blamed the Football Association for allowing the situation to
arise.

He said: "I believe we should follow the rules. If the rules permit it,
it is okay. If the rules do not permit it, no.

"I believe the English FA can do something in this regard. I believe as
the rules stand at present at UEFA, we cannot do anything - unless of
course the regulations are changed.

"But I don't agree regulations can be changed midway through the season.
As far as I can see, it is too late."

Meanwhile, Juventus have become the latest European giant to throw their
weight behind Liverpool's bid. Coach Fabio Capello, whose side were
beaten by Benitez's side in the quarter-finals, said: "Liverpool should
have the right to defend their trophy.

"The champions should be involved but I think they should have to
qualify like Brazil have to qualify for next year's World Cup."

CISSE ON TARGET FOR FRANCE
By Paul Eaton

Liverpoool star Djibril Cisse continued his recent rich vein of
goalscoring form by netting for France in their friendly victory over
Hungary last night.

It was Cisse's fourth goal in three games after grabbing a double
against Aston Villa on the last day of the Premiership season and then
converting from the penalty spot in the Champions League final shoot-out
with AC Milan.

Cisse's goal opened the scoring for France in the tenth minute when he
slotted the ball past 'keeper Gabor Kiraly after Sylvain Wiltord's pass
was deflected into his path.

It was Cisse's fourth goal for his country and set France on their way
to a 2-1 victory, their first home win under coach Raymond Domenech.

DIDI: I TOOK PEN WITH FRACTURED FOOT
By Paul Eaton

Dietmar Hamann has revealed the agony he went through to keep
Liverpool's Champions League dreams on track by taking a penalty against
AC Milan with a fractured right foot.

Hamann netted Liverpool's first penalty in the shoot-out to give the
Reds the advantage after Serginho had blazed Milan's first effort high
over the goal.

But he has astonishingly revealed feeling a pain in his right foot
towards the end of extra time which was later diagonsed as being caused
by a small fracture.

"I can remember when I did it but not how," recalls Didi. "It was about
five minutes from the end of extra time, and this sudden pain told me
there was something wrong.

"I was determined to shake it off, despite the discomfort, and it was
such an unbelievable game to be involved in that running on sheer
adrenaline wasn't so much of a problem.

"By the time I walked up to the penalty spot I'd forgotten about it. All
that mattered was making sure I scored and I can't remember feeling
anything other than elation when my kick went in. I remember the team
doctor putting some ice on it afterwards, but to be fair, we were all
walking on air by then.

"It was only in the following few days that the swelling got worse, and
by the time I showed it to the German team doctor, it had turned blue.
He arranged for a scan and it turns out there was a small fracture."

Liverpool Echo, 1 June 2005
Premier clubs back the Reds
By Mike Hornby, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL FC's biggest rivals have rallied to their Champions League cause.

Everton and Manchester United have called on Uefa to change the rules
and allow the European cup holders to defend their crown.

They were joined by Arsenal and Chelsea in demanding the Reds be granted
a spot in next season's competition despite their fifth-place finish in
the Premiership.

Thousands of ECHO readers have sent messages of support to our Let It Be
campaign and more Liverpool greats have added their voices to the debate.

The messages will be given to Uefa as they prepare to make the decision.

Everton director of communications Ian Ross said: "We have said all
along that the defending champions of Uefa's flagship competition should
always be allowed to defend their title."

Chelsea spokesman Simon Greenberg said: " We want to see as many English
clubs playing in Europe as possible.

"The four places should go to the top four clubs in the Premiership, but
the winner should also be allowed to defend the trophy, and an extra
place should be made available."

Manchester United press chief Phil Townsend said they also supported the
Premier League's position.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is said to have sympathy with Liverpool's plight.

Club legends also want current stars such as Jamie Carragher and Steven
Gerrard to be able to defend their European crown.

Record- breaking goalscorer John Aldridge said: "Liverpool winning the
Champions League after finishing outside the bottom four has made it a
bit messy for Uefa.

"But given the manner in which they won the trophy, the reigning
champions should be in the competition next year. Rules can be changed,
and should be if it makes the competition better."

Sammy Lee, senior England coach and former Liverpool midfielder said:
"All champions should be allowed to defend their title. Uefa must
realise that this rule has got to change, or the competition will become
a laughing stock."

Ex-star Tommy Smith added: "It's stupid. Uefa makes the rules and it can
also break them. After the most exciting European Cup final ever, it is
Liverpool's right to defend their hard-earned title."

Liverpool Echo, 1 June 2005
Traore set to sign new deal
EXCLUSIVE by Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

BORN again defender Djimi Traore is ready to sign a new four-year deal
at Anfield.

But, veteran defender Mauricio Pellegrino has been told he won't be
retained next season.

Traore was a matter of hours from joining David Moyes at Everton during
the last pre-season, but a last minute change of heart kept him at Anfield.

That hasn't stopped Everton tracking the left-back's progress, but the
Frenchman's triumphant finale to the season has convinced him to stay at
Liverpool.

He currently has just one year left on his contract, but that will be
extended until 2009 when talks conclude in a few weeks.

This will complete a staggering image transformation for the defender
who admits he feared he had played his last game for the club following
his own goal against Burnley in the FA Cup.

Dutch winger Bolo Zenden, meanwhile, is the latest player to be touted
as part of Rafa Benitez's squad rebuilding plans .

The 28-year-old is a free agent after spending a year on-loan from
Chelsea at Middlesbrough.

Sources in Holland claim Zenden, capped 53 times by the Netherlands, is
set for talks at Anfield this summer.

Jamie Carragher will also open contract talks before the start of next
season, as will Steven Gerrard, who has already told club officials he
is definitely staying at the club.

Didi Hamann is also ready to pen the one-year-extension to his contract,
with the option of another 12 months.

Pellegrino, however, will not be back at Anfield for pre-season on June 27.

The former Valencia stopper was not convincing enough during his six
month spell to secure the option of an additional year.

Fracture thwarts Hamann chances
By Ian Doyle, Daily Post

DIETMAR HAMANN'S efforts in helping Liverpool fight back to European Cup
glory have cost him the chance of an international recall.

The midfielder suffered a fatigue fracture to his right foot during last
week's memorable victory over AC Milan in Istanbul.

And the 31-year-old has been forced to withdraw from Germany's
Confederations Cup squad after having been handed a surprise recall to
press his claims ahead of next summer's World Cup.

Meanwhile, Bundesliga outfit Hamburg haven't given up on signing the
midfielder, although it is almost certain Hamann will stay at Anfield.

"I have spoken to Hamann, and I can imagine him playing for us," said
Hamburg's sporting director Dietmar Beiersdorfer.

"But several English clubs are offering him three-year contracts. We
don't want to offer him a deal of that length. We will have to wait and
see how things develop over the next few days."

Bolton Wanderers are also interested in signing Hamann, who is out of
contract this summer.

LEGENDS PAY TRIBUTE TO NEW LEGENDS
By Steve Hunter

Liverpoolfc.tv has been inundated with messages of congratulations to
pass on to Rafa and the after their fantastic fifth European Cup win.
Here's a few from Liverpool's legends of the past we've picked out for
you to enjoy.

Terry McDermott
Scored Liverpool's first ever goal in a European Cup Final in 1977

"It's the best performance of any British club in Europe. It surpasses
Liverpool's other four European Cup wins. You knew that they were going
to do it when Jerzy Dudek made that incredible double save in
extra-time. I'm still gobsmacked."

Alan Hansen
Played in three winning European Cup teams for Liverpool in 1978, 1981
and 1984

"It was not just the best comeback in a European Cup Final, it was not
just the best comeback I have seen in football, it was the best comeback
I have seen in sport anywhere in the world. Liverpool were saved by
three factors, the tactical acumen of Rafael Benitez, the sheer grit and
will to fight that had seen them through to the final in Istanbul, and
the brilliance of Steven Gerrard.

"As a performance from a captain of Liverpool it is hard to see how
Gerrard's second half could have been bettered. He dragged Liverpool
back into the match with the same self-belief shown when they scored
three times after the interval to overcome Olympiacos. This was perhaps
Liverpool's greatest ever performance."

Steve Nicol
Played in the 1984 European Cup win against AS Roma, and now lives and
coaches in the USA

"That was something else. I was ready to go home at half-time. You think
you have seen most everything, but that was amazing. We talk about
tactics all the time, but pure heart and soul won it for Liverpool.

"You have to listen to other teams saying how great they are. This team
now carries on the tradition. They absolutely deserve a place alongside
our team. I might be living in America now but you never lose your love
for Liverpool."

Phil Neal
Played in all four of Liverpool's European Cup triumphs and scored in
the 1977 and 1984 finals

"It was absolutely astonishing. I never thought I would see any game
exceedthe1977 final but I did on Wednesday night. It was an incredible,
unbelievable result."

Kenny Dalglish
Played in four European Cup Finals and scored the winning goal in 1978

"Even now it just seems surreal but what a magnificent effort from them.
I tell you that team hasn't half got some heart and courage and belief
in the manager, the way they went about the job after half-time. The
players have heard all about past successes in the club's history but
now they have got their own European Cup winning story to tell and what
a truly fantastic story it is.

"They totally deserve their place in history and all the enjoyment they
will get from this for years and years to come. I'm so happy for them
and for all the fans who were absolutely magnificent out there. There
must have been forty-off thousand of them and they were brilliant, at
3-0 down helping the team get back into it. They conducted themselves
impeccably.

"Rafa knew it was wrong and he did something about it. They looked much
more secure with Didi Hamann and whatever he said to them to keep them
believing worked. But I guess he wanted to give AC Milan a chance so he
let them have a start in the first half it was a fine sporting gesture
from Rafa! Seriously I am just so happy for the club, for the fans and
for the players. UEFA have got to let them defend that trophy now.

"It was a night that will live forever in all our memories."

Alan Kennedy
Scored the winning goals in two European Cup Finals for Liverpool in
1981 and 1984

"That was one of the greatest ever European Cup games. Liverpool were
awesome in the second half. The fans were just absolutely magnificent
and I am absolutely delighted for them. Liverpool are back and it is
just wonderful."

Ian Rush
Scored a penalty in the shoot-out win over AS Roma in 1984

"Few of us are going to witness a game like that in our lifetime. Talk
about a game of two halves it was incredible, well done to the boys.
They will beona high and they should enjoy every minute because they
have worked hard for it all season."

John Aldridge
Legendary goalscorer supreme

"I was speechless. What a great night. I am very proud to come from
Liverpool and be associated with it after that performance. It was a
phenomenal achievement. There is a saying that football is a game of two
halves and that is exactly what it was. To come back like that was amazing."

Ian Callaghan
Record number of appearances for Liverpool

"It was incredible. I have never seen a game like it. To be three down
at half-time I don't think anyone held our hope. Rafa must have said a
lot to them at half-time because it was an incredible second half. There
was three goals in six minutes with two incredible saves. It was fantastic."

Jan Molby
The Great Dane

"It is an absolutely fantastic achievement and the comeback was just
magnificent. That is one to remember."

Hamann set to stay at Anfield after rethink
By Ian Doyle, Daily Post Staff

DIETMAR HAMANN will stay at Liverpool for another season as Rafael
Benitez moved a step closer to securing his latest summer signing.

Hamann, who is out of contract this summer, was on the brink of joining
Premiership rivals Bolton Wanderers after deciding his future lay away
from Anfield.

But after playing a prominent role in Liverpool's unforgettable European
Cup final triumph over AC Milan last Wednesday, the German international
has had a rethink and decided to remain at Anfield.

It is a massive fillip for Benitez, who wants the 32-year-old as part of
his new-look squad for next season as he aims for an improvement in
Liverpool's inconsistent Premiership form.

Hamann has agreed a contract in principle, and will sign a one-year deal
next month with the option of another 12 months.

Benitez, meanwhile, is closing in on a move for Argentine centre-back
target Gabriel Milito. The 24-year-old was part of the Real Zaragoza
side which rounded off their Spanish La Liga campaign with a 3-1 defeat
at home to Real Madrid to end any hopes of European qualification for
next season.

Zaragoza are £30m in debt, and with the club struggling to meet interest
payments they have on option but to sell players this summer.

Milito has a buy-out clause of £20m in his contract, but such is
Zaragoza's immediate plight that Liverpool are confident that an offer
of £6-7m will be enough to persuade them to part with the player.

With the Spanish season now over, Benitez - who is currently back in his
homeland - wants to move quickly for a player previously courted by
Barcelona and Manchester United.

Another Argentine Zaragoza player, Luciano Galletti, is on Benitez's
wishlist, and with £30m to spend the Liverpool manager has also targeted
Shaun Wright-Phillips and Feyenoord striker Dirk Kuyt.

Meanwhile, Harry Kewell has vowed to draw a line under his injury
torment after revealing he had mixed emotions following Liverpool's
Champions League triumph over AC Milan last Wednesday.

The Australian was a surprise starter but was forced off during the
first half with a groin injury that required surgery on Friday.

And Kewell said: "Hopefully with the operation completed I can put all
this injury business behind me.

"Wednesday night in Turkey was the highlight of my career and also the
worst nightmare of my career, its all mixed in two inside my head.

"Rafael Benitez showed a lot faith in me by picking me from the start
because he had other options. It was great for me until the injury.

"I stretched for a ball and my groin snapped, I couldn't do anything
about it.

"Now it's not going to be a great summer with all the rehabilitation but
it's been like that for the last six months.

"But if you'd said to me six months ago that I was going to pull my
groin in the European Cup final and I would end up with a winner's medal
I'd have taken that.

"Maybe it's one of the worst things to have happened to me but it's
still been the perfect end to the season."

Reds' badge of honour
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL are to be awarded a special badge of honour by UEFA as a
permanent reminder of their fifth European Cup triumph.

The crest is presented to every club which has kept the European Cup,
putting the Reds into an elite group including Real Madrid and AC Milan.

The logo will be worn on the shirt sleeves of the players at the start
of next season and will never be removed for as long as Liverpool FC exist.

Chief executive Rick Parry said the accolade will ensure the high esteem
with which the club is held across Europe will now increase every time
the Anfield stars put on their famous jersey.

"By keeping the European Cup, we've joined an elite group which we'll
remain part of forever," said Parry.

"We'll have a permanent record of our status with the special UEFA badge
on our shirt. Only those clubs who have kept the European Cup get this.
From now on, every Liverpool jersey will have this logo. The only
problem we've got with it is it's blue, but that's a small price to play
for such a prestigious honour.

"The fifth is the most special because it puts us on a different level
to before.

"I think Alan Hansen summed it up perfectly. He said you can live off a
European Cup win for five years, by 10 it's fading away, but by 20 years
it seems like the last win was a lifetime away.

"To many of our fans, this feels even more special than the first
because to win five and keep it is the pinnacle for any club."

Charlton and Birmingham battle for Smicer
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

CHARLTON and Birmingham are leading the chase for European Cup hero
Vladimir Smicer following his triumphant Anfield exit.

The Czech international is currently back in Prague after bringing the
curtain down on his Reds career in extraordinary style.

But the 32-year-old wants to remain in Premiership football and will be
discussing a move with Steve Bruce and Alan Curbishley over the next few
weeks.

Smicer could be reunited with former team-mate Danny Murphy at The
Valley and a move to the capital appears to be his preferred option at
this stage.

However, Birmingham are also keen to pair the creative midfielder with
another former teammate, Emile Heskey. Smicer's close friend Patrik
Berger will also be playing in the Midlands next season, at rivals Aston
Villa.

Milan Baros' hopes of completing an £8m switch to Valencia may have hit
a late hitch.

The Spaniards' interest is believed to have cooled.

Baros has permission from manager Rafa Benitez to find a new club -
providing a bid matches the Reds' valuation.

Benitez has no intention of allowing his stars of Europe leave on the
cheap, but an outstanding offer will represent good business for a
player who signed for £4m in 2002.

* Former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier has joined Lyon, prompting the
French newspaper L'Equipe to link his new club with a swoop for Baros.

It's highly unlikely Baros will be interested in rejoining his ex-boss.

[lfc-news] Turks to keep Liverpool out - Telegraph

Sunday Telegraph, 29 May 2005
Turks to keep Liverpool out
By Andrew Warshaw

Liverpool's dream of defending their Champions League title came under
fire last night from senior UEFA executives. Ironically it emerged that
if the club was allowed to take part, the team ruled out of the group
stages would be Turkish champions Fenerbahce from Istanbul.

In spite of growing pressure from FA chief executive Brian Barwick, UEFA
officials poured scorn on attempts to secure an unprecedented fifth
place for English clubs. UEFA rules state that winners go into the group
stage automatically, but only if they finish high enough in their
domestic league to qualify for the tournament. Liverpool finished fifth
in the Premiership and, despite their fifth win in Europe's premier club
competition, it seems they will play in the UEFA Cup next season, unless
UEFA decide to make an exception at a meeting in Manchester on June 17.

Liverpool's plight has been compounded by the news that the place
reserved in the group stages for the title-holders (presuming they
qualify) would be taken by Fenerbahce. Under normal circumstances, the
Turkish champions would have entered at the third qualifying stage.

"Right now, Liverpool are out and Fenerbahce are in," said David Will,
Scotland's UEFA member. "The rules were agreed in February and any move
to change them would have to be exceptional."

He said that UEFA were split on the issue but spokesman William Gaillard
said there is no possibility of allowing Liverpool to pre-qualify, the
method favoured by the FA. "Why should we make an exception for England?
There cannot be five clubs from any one association, end of story. The
FA knew that," he said. "They could easily have nominated Liverpool, as
Champions League winners, instead of Everton as the fourth-placed team,"
he added.

The FA ruled on May 5 that fourth-placed Everton would be entered even
if Liverpool won the Champions League.

UEFA president Lennart Johansson privately supports Liverpool's case for
admission but not all his senior colleagues agree. "The only decision
that can be made is to follow the regulations," said Norway's Per Ravn
Omdal, a UEFA vice-president. Iceland's Eggert Magnusson concurred:
"It's the English FA's problem, not UEFA's." Senes Erzik, Turkey's UEFA
executive committee member, said: "It doesn't matter that Fenerbahce is
from my country. I'd take the same view if it was a team from Israel,
Poland or anywhere."

FA executive director David Davies said: "We have never asked for
Liverpool to be catapulted directly into the group stage. But this in an
extraordinary situation which requires an extraordinary solution."

UEFA's Gaillard responded: "If we allow Liverpool to pre-qualify, that
will be changing the rules not once but twice. It sets a terrible
precedent."
