LEGENDS PAY TRIBUTE TO NEW LEGENDS
By Steve Hunter

Liverpoolfc.tv has been inundated with messages of congratulations to
pass on to Rafa and the after their fantastic fifth European Cup win.
Here's a few from Liverpool's legends of the past we've picked out for
you to enjoy.

Terry McDermott
Scored Liverpool's first ever goal in a European Cup Final in 1977

"It's the best performance of any British club in Europe. It surpasses
Liverpool's other four European Cup wins. You knew that they were going
to do it when Jerzy Dudek made that incredible double save in
extra-time. I'm still gobsmacked."

Alan Hansen
Played in three winning European Cup teams for Liverpool in 1978, 1981
and 1984

"It was not just the best comeback in a European Cup Final, it was not
just the best comeback I have seen in football, it was the best comeback
I have seen in sport anywhere in the world. Liverpool were saved by
three factors, the tactical acumen of Rafael Benitez, the sheer grit and
will to fight that had seen them through to the final in Istanbul, and
the brilliance of Steven Gerrard.

"As a performance from a captain of Liverpool it is hard to see how
Gerrard's second half could have been bettered. He dragged Liverpool
back into the match with the same self-belief shown when they scored
three times after the interval to overcome Olympiacos. This was perhaps
Liverpool's greatest ever performance."

Steve Nicol
Played in the 1984 European Cup win against AS Roma, and now lives and
coaches in the USA

"That was something else. I was ready to go home at half-time. You think
you have seen most everything, but that was amazing. We talk about
tactics all the time, but pure heart and soul won it for Liverpool.

"You have to listen to other teams saying how great they are. This team
now carries on the tradition. They absolutely deserve a place alongside
our team. I might be living in America now but you never lose your love
for Liverpool."

Phil Neal
Played in all four of Liverpool's European Cup triumphs and scored in
the 1977 and 1984 finals

"It was absolutely astonishing. I never thought I would see any game
exceedthe1977 final but I did on Wednesday night. It was an incredible,
unbelievable result."

Kenny Dalglish
Played in four European Cup Finals and scored the winning goal in 1978

"Even now it just seems surreal but what a magnificent effort from them.
I tell you that team hasn't half got some heart and courage and belief
in the manager, the way they went about the job after half-time. The
players have heard all about past successes in the club's history but
now they have got their own European Cup winning story to tell and what
a truly fantastic story it is.

"They totally deserve their place in history and all the enjoyment they
will get from this for years and years to come. I'm so happy for them
and for all the fans who were absolutely magnificent out there. There
must have been forty-off thousand of them and they were brilliant, at
3-0 down helping the team get back into it. They conducted themselves
impeccably.

"Rafa knew it was wrong and he did something about it. They looked much
more secure with Didi Hamann and whatever he said to them to keep them
believing worked. But I guess he wanted to give AC Milan a chance so he
let them have a start in the first half it was a fine sporting gesture
from Rafa! Seriously I am just so happy for the club, for the fans and
for the players. UEFA have got to let them defend that trophy now.

"It was a night that will live forever in all our memories."

Alan Kennedy
Scored the winning goals in two European Cup Finals for Liverpool in
1981 and 1984

"That was one of the greatest ever European Cup games. Liverpool were
awesome in the second half. The fans were just absolutely magnificent
and I am absolutely delighted for them. Liverpool are back and it is
just wonderful."

Ian Rush
Scored a penalty in the shoot-out win over AS Roma in 1984

"Few of us are going to witness a game like that in our lifetime. Talk
about a game of two halves it was incredible, well done to the boys.
They will beona high and they should enjoy every minute because they
have worked hard for it all season."

John Aldridge
Legendary goalscorer supreme

"I was speechless. What a great night. I am very proud to come from
Liverpool and be associated with it after that performance. It was a
phenomenal achievement. There is a saying that football is a game of two
halves and that is exactly what it was. To come back like that was amazing."

Ian Callaghan
Record number of appearances for Liverpool

"It was incredible. I have never seen a game like it. To be three down
at half-time I don't think anyone held our hope. Rafa must have said a
lot to them at half-time because it was an incredible second half. There
was three goals in six minutes with two incredible saves. It was fantastic."

Jan Molby
The Great Dane

"It is an absolutely fantastic achievement and the comeback was just
magnificent. That is one to remember."
