Fracture thwarts Hamann chances

DIETMAR HAMANN'S efforts in helping Liverpool fight back to European Cup
glory have cost him the chance of an international recall.

The midfielder suffered a fatigue fracture to his right foot during last
week's memorable victory over AC Milan in Istanbul.

And the 31-year-old has been forced to withdraw from Germany's
Confederations Cup squad after having been handed a surprise recall to
press his claims ahead of next summer's World Cup.

Meanwhile, Bundesliga outfit Hamburg haven't given up on signing the
midfielder, although it is almost certain Hamann will stay at Anfield.

"I have spoken to Hamann, and I can imagine him playing for us," said
Hamburg's sporting director Dietmar Beiersdorfer.

"But several English clubs are offering him three-year contracts. We
don't want to offer him a deal of that length. We will have to wait and
see how things develop over the next few days."

Bolton Wanderers are also interested in signing Hamann, who is out of
contract this summer.
