It seems like ages since the reserves have had a home match and with
the recent results of the first team the return of the youngsters to
The Racecourse came as a welcome distraction. It wasn't just
youngsters playing tonight though, Luis Garcia was also in the
starting line up as he continues his come back from injury. Also in
the starting line up was recent signing Daniel Agger and Jack Hobbs
proudly wore the captains armband in his first season for The Reds.

The visiting Bolton team seemed to be nothing to fear. They sat
bottom of the league and had no recognisable names in their starting
line up. The game started with Liverpool on top. After three minutes
Calliste nearly turned a somewhat speculative cross from Anderson
into a goal as he rose brilliantly. His header was directed to close
to the keeper though and he gathered with relative ease.

The games next chance fell to Danny Guthrie 15 minutes later. He
received a ball from Luis Garcia on the left wing. He ran at the
fullback and cut inside him before releasing a bending shot which
looked like it might just curl around the keeper and in but
Kazimeiczak did well to tip the ball over.

On 35 minutes Guthrie got a little over excited and shot from twenty
five yards when there were probably better options available. Nobody
was complaining about his attacking intent though.

Two minutes later and Garcia was heavily involved again. He turned
two Bolton defenders inside out in the box as he twisted and turned
looking for space. As he found that space he laid on Anderson son
who really should have scored. Unfortunately he was unable to live
up to his internet uberlegend and his scuffed shot was cleared with
comfort.

On 22 minutes Barragan mirrored Guthrie's earlier run. As he came
down the right flank he cut in, this time he managed to get the ball
back on to his favoured right foot. He opted for power instead, but
the result was the same as the Bolton keeper tipped the ball behind
for a a corner.

The impressive Guthrie nearly forced Powell into an own goal as his
excellent delivery of a free kick from the left wing meant Powell
could only get a flick on to the ball he tried to clear. Luckily the
Bolton keeper was there again to save his blushes.

At half time Garcia was replaced by Adam Hamill, this change did
little to effect the flow of the game as Liverpool still pressed
forward, although quite ineffectively if the truth be told. On 53
minutes Agger came forward for a corner. As Anderson delivered Agger
evaded his marker and rose to win the header (much like he did
against Birmingham for the first team) unfortunately he headed wide
(much like he did against Birmingham for the first team).

It was to be Agger's last action of the match as he was replaced by
O'Donnell. With twenty minutes of the second half gone it was
Liverpool's first substitute who nearly got on the scoresheet. After
good work from Anderson, Hammill received the ball, took one touch
and curled a shot back toward goal from outside the keeper's left
upright. The ball just failed to do enough and went wide.

Guthrie's was again slightly over enthusiastic on the hour mark as
he picked up a loose ball and headed directly for goal. He was a
little to direct and ran into a wall of defenders. He still managed
to get a shot off but it was weak and straight at the keeper.

Peltier and Hobbs were looking more confident and controlled in
midfield in the second period and it was a great ball by Peltier
that nearly led to an opening goal for Liverpool. His cross field
ball found Calliste with a yard of space in the box. He turned his
man but from a tight angle was only able to hit the keeper.

Guthrie was replaced by Bez (Idrajiz) with 18 minutes left. Within
five minutes he's nearly won a penalty. He was hauled down as he
turned his man but the referee adjudged that the infringement had
taken place outside the box.

Peltier nearly scored from the resultant freekick but the keeper
again did well diving low to his right. There was only one more
moment of incident in what was quite a dull affair. With the clocks
ticking down Calliste again span his man. He was somewhat cynically
hacked down, but as he was only mid turn it couldn't really be seen
as a professional foul. Peltier took the freekick but could only hit
the wall.

MOM. It's hard to pick a man of the match as nobody really stood
out. Peltier, Smith, Guthrie and Hobbs were all good, but I'll go
for Roque again. He does everything with such calm assurance. Given
time the young man from Lieda could be some find.

As the final whistle blew one agonising fan called out "Why is every
forward at this club shit?". A touch harsh, but I think we all know
where he was coming from.

In other news

The Reds are said to be close to tieing up a move for Argentine
defender Gabriel Paletta. He is currently at Banfield and is much
sought after. It is said that he is due for a medical next week.
After that he will remain at his current club until the end of the
Argentine season.

Liverpool have agreed a link-up with Ghanaian side Ashgold as they
look to explore the African market.

The European Cup holders came to the arrangement after holding talks
with Ashgold officials last week.

The agreement could see Ashgold becoming a feeder club for Liverpool
allowing them first refusal on signing any young talent that comes
through the ranks at the Ghanaian outfit.

The partnership could be similar to the deals Manchester United have
with Royal Antwerp and Arsenal with Beveren.

Ashgold chief executive Kudjoe Fianoo was delighted with the
partnership with the Premiership titans.

"We are thrilled by the offer Liverpool have made us and we hope
that opportunities can be explored to the benefit of both clubs and
also Ghanaina footballers" Fianoo told Ghanaweb.

"We are in this relationship for as long haul as possible"

"We will strive to tap the enormous knowledge and networking at the
disposal of Proton for the benefit of not only Ashgold but also
Ghanaian and African football at large" Fianoo said.

weekly article for teletext

Things certainly aren't going well for the Reds at the moment and a
lack of goals is hindering our progress. In truth this fear has
been there for a while but masked by midfielders scoring goals. The
worrying effect at the moment is the lack of chances we are creating
though as well. Early on in the season we missed huge numbers of
chances but now we're simply missing the target.

It's difficult with so many games coming around all the time to get
any confidence back up but perhaps not having time to think about it
could help. If we can get right behind the boys then we can get out
of this as one. Sticking behind the players is a key and the
players working extra hard will work.

Thinking back to Sunday and I can only hope that the FA start
looking seriously at the referee conning, mainly from foreign
players. I accept that Pepe Reina needed to be sent off as you
can't raise your hands. What people cannot accept though is players
making things worse than they are and cheating in order to get one
up on an opponent. Chelsea had been more clinical in the until that
point and deservedly won but this just sours the game. It needs
kicking out of the game but as long as the FA ignore it this will
get worse.

[Liverweb] Charlton Match Report

for Cisse (77)

Subs Unused : Carson, Hamann

-----------

The Reds slumped to a second 2-0 defeat in a week at the Valley.
This game was one the Reds really should have won having controlled
the game. Once again though the Reds simply were not clinical in
front of goal and ultimately paid the price. Charlton may have got a
dodgy penalty for their first goal but we should have been leading
the match at the point. We cannot hide behind bad decisions all the
time.

The Reds got the game underway attacking the end with the travelling
Reds in. Now for the next forty minutes the Reds were the dominant
side. They controlled play and Charlton were left looking very
ordinary indeed. The Reds started well and looked to press forward.
Cisse shot across goal on five minutes and a minute later Morientes
volleyed straight at Myhre. This was what we were expecting to see.

Cisse was playing down the right wing and from early on you could
see he had the better of Spector but as usual we didn't capitalise
on this. Crouch headed wide on twelve minutes from a Cisse cross.
Two minutes later and only Crouch will know how he didn't score.
Presented with a great chance he really should have done better but
he wasted too much time bring the ball down. In doing so he lost the
impetus and the chance was cleared.

On fifteen minutes it was heart in mouth time for everyone it seems
bar Dudek. Dudek decided to dribble around Bent and managed to
clear. Five minutes later and there was another chance for the Reds.
This time an Alonso corner was headed wide by Hyypia. It was still
early in the game though and the positive was that we were pushing
forward when we could and in complete control of the game. The stats
must have been about 70% possession through this point.

The goal wasn't forthcoming though and on forty one minutes
everything went pear shaped. Darren Bent raced on to a through ball
and when dancing around Dudek who had raced out he went down. Dudek
clearly had pulled his arms out of the way but the whistle went and
a penalty was given. Dudek was yellow carded before returning to his
line. He tried to do the Dudek again on the line but Darren Bent
sent him the wrong way and Charlton were ahead.

Two added minutes were played in the half and it was during this
time that it got worse for the Reds. Luke Young pounced on a loose
ball in the area and blasted the ball through Dudek and in to the
back of the net. The Reds might have controlled the main part of the
game but Charlton were clinical when their chances had come.
Strangely like the Chelsea game in fact.

The sides came out for the second half but made no changes. Fowler
and Riise had warmed up a lot at half time but were forced to wait
for their introduction. Charlton got the game started again. The
second half was not a great view for the Reds though sadly. The two
goals just knocked them for six really. The second half looked more
likely that Charlton would score again than the Reds.

The worrying thing for the Reds was that they went long ball all too
often. Robbie Fowler came on after an hours play for Peter Crouch.
Crouch walked off the pitch looking a man who knew he'd never score
which is a worry. Just a minute later and Darren Bent got the better
of Hyypia before smacking a shot off the crossbar with Dudek well
beaten. Just three minutes later and it was Marcus Bent's turn to
hit the woodwork. His miss though was very poor as he hit he post
when it was just as easy to score.

At the other end though the Reds simply didn't grab the game by the
scruff of the neck and charge forward. Sissoko blasted a shot well
over the bar with twenty five minutes to go. Morientes probably had
the best chance on seventy three minutes but his shot was well saved
by the keeper. This simply wasn't going to be the Reds' night and a
fair few Reds left early knowing that very fact as well.

As the full time whistle went it was another Reds loss from another
game that they were the better side in for a long time. The
difference once again was clinical finishing when it mattered and it
meant the Reds travelled home with no points yet again. This needs
to change and fast if the Reds are to progress. With Wigan coming up
on Saturday lunch time it's not long to plan the way forward.

MotM : Steve Finnan - continues to play well at right back and tries
extremely hard to support the Reds play going forward too.

The Reds slumped to a two goal loss at Stamford Bridge and also had
Jose Reina sent off in the final ten minutes. The sending off turned
the game and what you remember of it as Reina raised his hands to
Robben who then fell as if hit by some sniper in the crowd. That
such a cheat got away scot free only annoys you even more. However
Reina needs to learn to ignore the jibes. Ignoring the final ten
minutes though the real difference between the two sides was class
at the front end. The Reds had none despite dominating large periods
of the game whilst Chelsea were clinical when their chances
presented themselves.

The first thing you picked up on in this game was the woeful excuse
for a pitch. They spend millions on players and then have a pitch
they can't play football on. Michael Essien made a shock return for
Chelsea having gained special dispensation to play despite having
pulled out of the African Nations through injury. Chelsea it was who
got the game underway.

The game was slow to start and devoid of anything happening near the
goal. On eight minutes the Reds had their first real chance but
Carvalho was back to concede a corner. From that corner Carragher
just didn't get enough purchase on his header to score. Crouch was
giving Chelsea some problems at the back and Cech was certainly not
liking the physical presence.

On fifteen minutes the Reds had a corner which Gerrard went over to
take. Just as he went to take it the ref stopped play to talk to
Carvalho and Kewell. Needless to say the Portugese defender was
using his arms to ensure one less man was available to score. The
Reds were certainly in control of the game and looking good but
lacked punch up at the strikers end. Crouch had a few headed
opportunities but he failed to make anything of them despite winning
them with ease.

Pressure though is nothing without goals and on thirty four minutes
the Reds paid for the lack of killer instinct. Chelsea won a corner
on their right which was whipped in. All the Reds floated out for
the ball and left three Chelsea players on the six yard box. When
Chelsea won the header Gallas was all alone to score from six yards.
It was a real kick in the teeth but the Reds had plenty time to come
back in to the game.

Joe Cole then had two efforts on goal but missed with both as
Chelsea gained confidence. They did have the ball in the back of the
net in first half stoppage time but it was rightly flagged offside.
The one worry in the move was how Reina fumbled the ball on the line
which allowed the offside Crespo to score.

No changes were made at half time on either side and the Reds were
out earlier than the home side. Within a minute of the re-start
Essien was booked for what appeared persistent fouling more than
anything else. The Reds again started to control the game but their
quality on the final third was poor. Sissoko was set up for a shot
on forty nine minutes but blazed the ball way over the bar.

At the other end Chelsea just seemed to force the keeper to work
harder when they looked to create anything. On fifty three minutes
Robben twisted and turned before firing just past the far post. On
the hour mark the Reds made their first change of the day when Riise
was changed for Garcia. Ultimately this made the Reds worse if
anything. Garcia was booked within two minutes of coming on when he
launched himself at the ball. He got nothing other than Gallas.

Just five minutes later and Chelsea were two up and it was a superb
finish by Crespo. The Argentine had been pushing his luck all
afternoon with the offside track. If at first you don't succeed then
try again and eventually it worked for him and having beat the trap
he then hit a great shot past Reina.

The Reds finally brought Cisse on for Sissoko as they tried to push
harder but all it ended up doing was make the Reds lose all kind of
shape. Damien Duff lasted five minutes on the pitch as a sub before
limping off. Then on eighty one minutes came the sending off. Reina
charged out of his area as Gudjohsen got in around the back of the
Reds. Reina then flung himself around the Chelsea striker to poke
the ball out for a corner. It was a poor challenge and the ref was
rightly ready to book the Reds' keeper. In calling the keeper over
Robben had a go at Pepe who then touched the player in full view of
the ref. Robben then dived to the floor as if shot which made the
whole incident look even worse and referee Alan Wiley then had no
choice but to send Pepe off. A disgraceful part of football by
Robben changed the temper of the game and I can only hope h gets a
reprimand from the FA for cheating.

Suddenly Jerzy Dudek was called into the action for the first time
since Istanbul and it was Garcia who made way for him. Chelsea went
close on two occasions in the final minutes but failed to score
although with a two goal cushion it didn't really bother them. Xabi
Alonso got himself booked just before the end for moaning too much
at Wiley but as the final whistle went anger was the first thing on
your mind.

If you really sit down and watch this match again on a video you
will see a major problem for the Reds. We simply didn't look like
scoring and that very same problem has been around for some time
now. At Chelsea however even when things aren't going well they can
grind things out.

MotM : Jamie Carragher - played as solidly as ever and was back to
make more than one last ditch tackle for the Reds on the day.

The Reds slumped to a one goal defeat in what turned out to be a
game of two penalties. The Reds missed one in the first half and
then saw Blackburn score one that they were awarded. The Reds
bypassed the midfield for much of the time in this game as they went
long towards Platt and Frayne all too often. It made them look very
ordinary and they rarely looked like scoring.

Rovers got the game underway attacking the Academy end in the first
half and straight away went on the attack. The first and most
obvious thing for the Reds was the quality of Barratt on the right
side of midfield. He beat his man first time and then did it time
and again. It turned out he was up against ex-Red Mark King who was
returning from injury. The downside for the Reds was that once they
had the beating of Kind they stopped playing the ball out there.

On nine minutes Platt should have opened the scoring for the Reds
but side footed just the wrong side of the post. Midway through the
half came the first of a penalty each. Michael burns beta his man
down the left hand side and crossed deep to the back post. The
referee adjudged that there was a hand ball in the box as Rovers
tried to clear it and a penalty was given. Frayne and Platt both
argued over the taking of the kick but it was Frayne who won the
battle. He shot right and the keeper went that way to push the ball
clear.

Blackburn pushed forward and were themselves awarded a penalty on
the half hour mark. Robbie Threlfall put his hands up to protect
himself as he threw his body in the way of a cross. The ball hit his
hands and the ref pointed to the spot. Rovers tucked the ball away
well and it proved the only goal of the game.

The two teams came out for the second half and again failed to serve
up much incident. The Reds were going long and saw most things moped
up with ease by Rovers at the back. Meanwhile Rovers tried to create
stuff but time and again came up against Calum Woods who was in
outstanding form on the day. Captaining the side from centre back
Woods let nothing get past him. Even on the one occasion his passing
let him down he was the one back to mop up the danger.

The Reds tried hard early in the second half but only had a Ryan
Wignall shot wide of the goal to show for their efforts really. On
the hour mark Dave Roberts was called in to action as he did
superbly to smother a shot at the back post.

The Reds clearly needed to make a change and for me it had to be in
the midfield. The central two had to brought in to the game ore and
with Barnett on the bench the Reds had a player who could change the
game. On seventy one minutes the first change was made but it was
merely to change the front two. Lindfield and Nardiello came on for
Frayne and Platt. The move didn't really change the Reds much and as
it happens five minutes later Barnett came on to replace Burns.

The game ticked on with neither side creating any goal mouth
incident. On eighty minutes Roberts dropped a cross at the back post
and King who was their to pounce side footed the ball wide of the
goal when he really should have scored.

The Reds had a couple of chance in the final minutes but first
Nardiello volleyed over the bar and then having got behind his man
Ryan shot straight at the Rovers keeper. It simply wasn't going to
happen for the Reds and the final whistle went at the end of a
disappointing game.

MotM : Calum Woods - played superbly at the back and nothing at all
got past him all game. He should really be a reserve regular now and
on this form it's hard to see why he isn't.

The two sides meet for the fourth time this season at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea won the reverse fixture earlier this season 4-1 and will hope to
complete their third league double over the Reds in this match. The two
Champions League games ended in draws.

The sides also met five times last season with the Reds winning the crucial
semi Final second leg which took them on to Champions League glory in
Istanbul. Chelsea though had won the League Cup Final.

Squads :

Liverpool : Reina, Finnan, Carragher, Hyypia, Agger, Warnock, Riise,
Traore, Luis Garcia, Gerrard, Hamann, Alonso, Sissoko, Kewell, Crouch,
Cisse, Morientes, Fowler, Carson, Dudek, Kromkamp.

Team Stats :

Liverpool have the upper hand overall on Chelsea but their record of late
isn't great. In the Premiership they have won only once in the Premiership
- Bruno Cheyrou won the match in 2004. That is the last win in all
Premiership games that the Reds have won.

December 1995 was the last time this fixture ended in a draw in London.
That day saw the teams finiahs 2 goals each.

In all League games the Reds have won fifteen times away from home and
fifty seven times overall.

Counting all games between the sides the Reds have won 63 to Chelsea's 47.

Jose Mourinho hopes to win his 50th league game in charge of Chelsea.

Player Stats : Luis Garcia will hope to play his 50th league game for the
Reds.

Robbie Fowler will be hoping to add to his tally of five Liverpool league
goals against Chelsea. Joe Cole leads the way for Chelsea out of their
current squad with three.

Harry Kewell needs one goal to hit double figures in the league for the
Reds. Fernando Morientes needs one for double figures for the Reds in all
competitions.

Steven Gerrard will hope to start his 200th Premiership game in this one.
If he gets subbed in this game it will be the fiftieth time he has been
subbed in the league for the Reds.

William Gallas will start his 200th game for Chelsea.

Both sides average about one yellow card per match at Stamford Bridge. The
Reds are the only side though to have players sent off away at the Bridge -
Gerrard and Diouf have been ordered from the pitch.

Referee : Alan Wiley - has officiated 21 games so far this season and given
five penalties, sixty-two yellow cards and four Red

Betting : Liverpool 7/2, Chelsea 4/5, Draw : 19/10

Liverweb Prediction : Chelsea 1 Liverpool 2
