RUSH LANDS CHESTER JOB
By Paul Eaton

Liverpool legend Ian Rush has been appointed manager of League Two outfit
Chester City.
Rush, who started his footballing career with Chester, will be introduced
to the crowd before this afternoon's home clash with Darlington after
winning the race to take over from Mark Wright at the Deva Stadium.

He said: "Chester City has always been close to my heart. They gave me a
start as a player and now my management career is starting with them.

"I have learned a lot in the last few years about coaching and I learned so
much in my time on the coaching side at Liverpool, particularly from Gerard
Houllier.

"I have been offered four or five managerial jobs in the past few years,
but now I think is the right time to take a chance. This is the start of a
new era.

"This is an opportunity I couldn't miss. Chester have an excellent chairman
in Stephen Vaughan who is extremely loyal and with his assistance I am sure
we will make progress."

Chairman Vaughan said: "Ian is a high profile apppointment for Chester
City. His illustrious playing career is well chronicled and without doubt
our strikers particularly can only benefit from his appointment.

"He brings with him a wealth of experience and I know our supporters will
be excited by the appointment."

RAFA TALKS TO .TV
By Steve Hunter

Rafael Benitez talks to Liverpoolfc.tv about Sunday's Premiership clash at
Bolton and reflects on a tough looking Champions League group for the Reds.

~ Liverpoolfc.tv: Rafa, your thoughts on the Champions League draw?

Rafael Benitez: I think we are in a difficult group because Deportivo and
Monaco are strong teams. Olympiakos won't be easy as all Greece teams will
be full of confidence because of the national team winning Euro 2004. It is
a dangerous group. I know about Deportivo and they are a very dangerous side.

Hopefully the performance against AK Graz on Tuesday night will be
forgotten about as it was a poor performance and I know you were not happy
with it. Do you see the game against Bolton as an opportunity to put right
what went wrong midweek?

There are always opportunities in football because most weeks we play two
games. I have seen the video of our game on Tuesday and if we had scored
early then perhaps it would have changed the whole game. Bolton is a new
game and different because we will have Xabi Alonso and Luis Garcia
available. They are very happy to have signed for Liverpool and I am sure
they will both be good for the team.

~ You spoke of the nervousness in midweek against Graz. Do you think that
is maybe down to a desire by the players to try and please you and maybe
they were frightened to express themselves?

Perhaps but I think the most important thing was we qualified. The players
know the things I want them to do.

~ Bolton have had an impressive start to the season with two wins. Have you
seen them and what do you think of them?

I have seen a lot of Bolton. I have watched videos of their matches and I
have the reports. Jay-Jay Okocha is a very good player and I like him but
we have to close the space down to him. I know Ivan Campo, Fernando Hierro
and Julio Cesar. We know about all the teams. Alex Miller and Hughie
McAuley have been watching Bolton and I have been talking to them.

~ Bolton have had two good wins but they do allow opposition teams a fair
amount of possession, so do you feel you can exploit that?

We know how they play and we will try to control the game and work hard.

~ How do you think your two strikers Cisse and Baros are working at the moment?

Sometimes they have played well and on other occasions they don't
understand each other. It means we need more time. We can perhaps change
their movement but we will work with them and the team. We have perhaps 50
games in a season so it will be important for everyone to play.

~ Some people have said they are very similar players, what do you think?

Perhaps they have similar qualities but Cisse is faster than Baros and
Milan perhaps controls the ball better. If they can understand each other's
game then the better it will be for the team.

~ You have introduced players like Stephen Warnock and Darren Potter this
season. How important is it for those young players to get that big game
experience?

It's important for me and for the club and the Academy. The young players
can see they will get a chance for the first team if they do well. A player
is in the first team squad because he plays well.

The Guardian, 28 Aug 2004
Culture divide disappears as Spanish invasion gathers pace
Traffic between La Liga and the Premiership is at an all-time high
By Dominic Fifield

If Xabi Alonso had any lingering doubts about swapping Primera División for
Premier League, he was quickly reassured. "There were concerns that I might
be out of the spotlight if I moved to England so I talked to the national
manager Luis Aragonés before signing," said the Liverpool midfielder. "He
told me not to worry, that he'd be following the Premiership closely this
season."

These days, Aragonés could do little else. Where once La Liga paid little
attention to the crude and frantic football emanating from these shores,
other than occasionally to lure a Gary Lineker or a David Beckham to the
sun, now they can hardly afford to ignore it. Real Madrid may have
instigated a new transfer policy of buying British, but the Premiership is
attracting Spaniards in ever greater numbers and quality. At this rate,
Aragonés will be joining the new France coach Raymond Domenech as a regular
observer in the stands.

The influx of Englishmen at Madrid and the regular export of Spaniards to
the likes of Liverpool and Bolton have bemused many Iberians. At the Reebok
Stadium tomorrow, some six Spanish players will be in attendance - either
out on the pitch or nursing injury as they watch from the sidelines. The
home side boasts a pair of veterans from La Liga in the former Real Madrid
duo Fernando Hierro and Iván Campo. For Liverpool, the influx of talent is
more youthful: Alonso, a Real Sociedad icon back in San Sebastián, has
moved to Merseyside for £10.7m to be joined by the 26-year-old winger Luis
García, a £6m recruit from Barcelona.

Antonio Núñez and Josemi, £2m signings from Real Madrid and Málaga
respectively, are also on the books. Indeed, Liverpool could arguably
include more Spaniards in their first-choice line-up than Real these days,
for all that the reverse could be true should José Camacho find room for
his English trio of Beckham, Michael Owen and Jonathan Woodgate. "For me,
it is not about what country a player comes from," said the Merseysiders'
Spanish manager Rafael Benítez. "What is important is whether a player is a
good professional. These players are good people, good footballers and good
professionals."

Benítez's presence was undoubtedly the primary attraction for the quartet
of compatriots to sign in at Anfield. "The manager has a great reputation
and is someone I have wanted to work with," said Alonso. Real had expressed
an interest in the midfielder, only to turn their attentions to foreign
recruits instead, reflecting the fact that local talent in the top echelons
of La Liga is still occasionally crowded out by overseas signings.

Premiership clubs such as Bolton or Blackburn - Javier de Pedro joined from
Sociedad - still boast the financial clout to offer competitive salaries to
plunder the Spanish league. English clubs also increasingly lean on their
recently introduced Spanish scouting networks.

Arsenal's talent spotter Francis Cagigao, once a youth-team player at
Barcelona and Highbury but now based in La Coruña, persuaded Arsène Wenger
to sign José Antonio Reyes from Seville. He also spotted Francesc Fabregas
playing in a Barcelona youth-team match last Easter.

Aragonés included Reyes, along with Alonso, in his squad for next week's
friendly against Scotland and the World Cup qualifier in Bosnia. Should
Wenger complete the £2.75m signing of Valencia's Miguel Angulo ahead of
Tuesday's transfer window to add to the goalkeeper Manuel Almunia then the
Spanish contingent at Highbury, so long considered a French enclave, will
be four with Cagigao's influence plain to see.

There has also been a shift in mentalities. Playing in England is no longer
seen as a hindrance to the Spaniards' international careers. Nor, as they
once did, do they question their ability to adapt to the style of the
Premier League. "You can make too much about the apparent differences
between Spanish and English football," said García, who has spent the last
six seasons at different clubs and has moved to Liverpool as much in search
of stability. "Sure, there are variations in tactics, but I think I can
adapt and do well."

Few doubt Alonso's ability to thrive in new surroundings. The 22-year-old
is reluctant to talk up his own game, though there are plenty of others who
will do that for him. "Real went for Patrick Vieira, but I'd rather they'd
signed Xabi Alonso," said Míchel, capped 66 times by Spain, who spent 20
years at Real. "He can do everything. He can do what Patrick Vieira can do
and much more, while Vieira can't do what Xabi Alonso can do."

Alonso, who already speaks immaculate English, has done all he can to
prepare himself for tomorrow's anticipated debut, studying a video of
Liverpool's opening-day draw with Tottenham Hotspur and undertaking his own
research on Bolton's tactics.

"Players in Spain or Italy don't usually get to see a lot of games with all
the distractions out there," said Benítez, "but Xabi wanted to learn
everything about his new team-mates, as well as about the opponents."

"You can learn a lot more about your opponent by studying them so I make
notes about them," said Alonso. "I have always had an interest in England,
and always wanted to play over here. That's one of the reasons I learned
the language, though I never presumed I would one day get the chance to
play for Liverpool.

"English football is something I've always wanted to experience. It's a new
life for me, a new style, but something I am looking forward to. In the
past, maybe Spanish players did not look to play abroad but that mentality
has changed. The prospect of playing for Liverpool is exciting. This is a
step up for me."

PA Sport, 27 Aug 2004
DEBUTS FOR ANFIELD NEW-BOYS

Liverpool will give Premiership debuts to new signings Luis Garcia and Xabi
Alonso at Bolton on Sunday.

Another Spaniard, full-back Josemi, is expected to return from a back
injury which forced him out of Tuesday's Champions League home defeat by
Graz AK. Goalkeeper Chris Kirkland (back) is unlikely to be fit to be on
the bench at the Reebok.

If Josemi does return, Jamie Carragher would probably move to a centre-back
role in place of Swiss defender Stephane Henchoz.

Bolton manager Sam Allardyce again has a full squad to choose from.

Following Wednesday's 2-1 victory at Southampton, Allardyce has no fresh
injury worries to contend with, with only Florent Laville on the long-term
absentee list.

Striker El-Hadji Diouf, who last week signed on a year-long loan deal from
Liverpool, has now acquired his work permit, but is not allowed to play
against his parent club due to Premier League rules.

Teams

Bolton (from): Jaaskelainen, Barness, Santos, Nolan, N'Gotty, Speed,
Giannakopoulos, Bridges, Pedersen, Okocha, Gardner, Davies, Jaidi, Campo,
Hierro, Hunt, Ferdinand, Haim Tal, Vaz Te, Poole.

Liverpool (from): Dudek, Josemi, Carragher, Hyypia, Riise, Garcia, Alonso,
Gerrard, Kewell, Cisse, Baros, Pongolle, Harrison, Kirkland, Hamann, Diao,
Warnock, Biscan, Finnan.

Liverpool Echo, 27 Aug 2004
Blues to sign Reds defender Traore

EVERTON boss David Moyes is on the brink of signing Djimi Traore from
Liverpool.

The 23-year-old central defender is expected to sign for £1.5 million
subject to a medical.

He will become Everton's third major signing of the summer following the
arrival of Marcus Bent and Tim Cahill.

Moyes said: "We are pleased a deal to sign Djimi has been agreed subject to
him passing a medical.

"We will pay Liverpool £1.5m over the next three years. I am hopeful he
will not be the last new arrival before the deadline."

The Goodison manager's transfer kitty has been bolstered by a fresh £6
million injection from chairman Bill Kenwright which is separate to the £20
million proposal currently under consideration.

The windfall is a bonus for Moyes although he must now work around the
clock to spend it before Tuesday's deadline with the Blues also playing two
games over the bank holiday weekend.

Anfield defender Steve Finnan is a target but the prospect of signing the
Irish international is unlikely because he is just 12 months into a
lucrative £30,000-a-week contract.

Moyes could also renew his interest in Red Star Belgrade defender Milan
Dudic following the club's failure to reach the Champions League group
stage after their midweek defeat to PSV.

New boys set for key roles
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

XABI ALONSO and Luis Garcia got lost on their way to Liverpool's training
ground yesterday. They're likely to have less trouble finding the route to
the Reds' first team.

The Spanish duo were handed their red jerseys with Rafael Benitez leaving
inquisitors in no doubt the pair will be key members of his side. Their
debuts are likely to be as immediate as Sunday.

Alonso has been described in terms which summon up the image of the
'complete midfielder'. Neither defensive, nor attacking. He passes, he
scores. His idols are listed as Redondo and Pep Guardiola.

And the inspiration of a certain Mr Aldridge earned a mention when Alonso
revealed how he first became passionate about football.

"I've always been a Real Sociedad fan and during my childhood the first
matches I saw involved John Aldridge," revealed the £10.7m signing. "When I
came to Anfield on Saturday I saw him sitting in the directors' box and
shook his hand. It was a nice feeling for me to meet him."

The Anfield connections don't end there, of course.

Sander Westerveld may have left for Sociedad under a cloud, but it seems
his fondness for the Reds remains.

"I spoke to Sander and he told me the club, the city, the fans and stadium
is wonderful," said Alonso.

"When I heard Liverpool were interested in me I knew what an important club
it is in England and Europe. I wanted to come here because it was a place I
wanted to play my football.

"It helps Rafa Benitez is here because he knows my game. When he told me he
was interested and the clubs reached an agreement, there was only one outcome."

Alonso thinks he's joined a club which can challenge for the Premiership as
early as this season.

He said: "I expect us to fight Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United. I
know they're good teams, but so are we. If we can do what the manager
wants, we can be very competitive.

"I've not spoken to the manager about whether I'll play on Sunday. I'll
probably know on Friday. I know Bolton have some Spanish players, so it
would be nice to play. I played against Ivan Campo and Fernando Hierro when
they were at Real Madrid. It's the first season for Hierro, just like me.

"I'm sure I will adapt to English football quickly. I think I'm well suited
to the English league. There are small differences, but in a few weeks I'm
sure I'll be used to it."

Alonso and Steven Gerrard are tipped to form a midfield dream team. Having
watched the last two home games, the 22-year-old is looking forward to
playing alongside the skipper.

"Steven Gerrard's level is very high," said Alonso.

"I've watched two matches and I've seen how good he is. He has good passing
skills and a strong shot. I hope to play a lot next to him.

"There are some things similar to our game. I don't like to talk too much
about my own qualities, I'd like people who watch me to make their own mind
up. I think the most important thing is to have balance in your game.

"I've always played midfield and tried to keep the game going with my
organisation and distribution. I know there are a lot of good midfielders
here already so I know it will be difficult to get into the side.

"Now it's up to the manager to play me." His chances will be improved the
more familiar he is with the club, and the path to the training ground in
West Derby.

"I had a problem finding it today, but on Friday I'll know exactly where
I'm going," he joked.

LUIS GARCIA TALKS TO LIVERPOOLFC.TV
By Steve Hunter

Luis Garcia speaks to us about his excitement at being a Liverpool player,
his admiration for manager Rafael Benitez and how difficult a decision it
was to leave Barcelona.

~ Liverpoolfc.tv: Luis, was it a difficult decision to leave Barcelona for
Liverpool?

Luis Garcia: In principle it was a difficult decision because leaving a
club like Barcelona is not an easy thing to do. However I weighed
everything up and had a conversation with the manager and we discussed one
or two important issues. When you consider the name Liverpool have in the
world of football and the history they have, it's a big place to come to
and in the end that helped me make my decision. I'm looking forward to many
happy years at Liverpool and hopefully I can settle well into the team.
Signing for Liverpool is something I'm very happy and pleased about.

~ How big a factor was it that Rafael Benitez is the Liverpool manager
having played for him at Tenerife?

I maintained a good relationship with Mr Benitez in the past. At one point
we had talked about the possibility of me going to Valencia so we got on
well. When he did finally come to Liverpool it was important for me to
feature as part of his plans, because I know he is trying to put together
the basis of a side which is going to achieve things over the next few
years. That was one of the main reasons for me coming here. We are all
looking to head in the same direction and create a good future for Liverpool.

~ How important is it for you to already have three Spanish players at
Liverpool?

It's not that important to be honest with you. Yes it helps if you have
players you can converse with but the main factor in joining is because
it's Liverpool.

~ How much do you know about the English game and have you seen much of it
on the TV in Spain?

We are lucky that we get a lot of English matches televised over in Spain
so when we were on pre-match get togethers at Barcelona and stuck in a
hotel we would watch the Premiership. I watched a lot of Liverpool matches
and one thing that really stuck out was the atmosphere in the ground and
that is something I am looking forward to experiencing at first hand.

~ How different do you think it will be to the atmosphere you experienced
in Spain?

I think the way English fans seem to really live for the game in this
country is tremendous and something to behold. The way the ground is always
full and sell out crowds is fantastic.

~ As a player do you respond better when the crowd is right behind you?

Definitely. If you are a player and you know the crowd are right behind you
it's great. If you play a bad pass they will keep supporting you and they
don't get on your back which is great. The crowd is vital to the team as
they can help you lift your game.

~ Luis how does it feel to be wearing the number 10 shirt at Liverpool,
made famous by the likes of John Toshack, Jan Molby, John Barnes and
Michael Owen?

I think it's something that I gave a lot of thought to and it was an
important decision. I know the 10 shirt is a big number at Liverpool and
it's something I'm really excited about, and it is something that will
inspire me wearing it.

~ Do you feel you are joining a club that can get back amongst the game's
elite again?

In Spain we have a situation where there is two teams at the very top in
Barcelona and Real Madrid so in England it's kind of like that, although I
would include Liverpool amongst the top teams in England. We can battle it
out for honours with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United.

~ Your Liverpool debut could come on Sunday at Bolton who also have a
Spanish player in Ivan Campo. Have you spoken to him at all about English
football?

I've not had a chance to speak to Ivan how he has been getting on in
England but I am aware he has done well in his time at Bolton. That can
only serve as a kind of incentive to the rest of us Spaniards to do well
over here because I am convinced we can play an important role at Liverpool
in the future.

[lfc-news] Benitez shoulders Anfield concern - Post

Liverpool daily Post, 25 Aug 2004
Benitez shoulders Anfield concern
By Ian Doyle, Daily Post

RAFAEL BENITEZ insisted on taking his share of responsibility for
Liverpool's "nervous" display after his side stumbled into the Champions
League.

Mario Tokic's superb 54th-minute strike earned Grazer AK a 1-0 win at
Anfield but the home side held on to progress 2-1 on aggregate.

It was a deeply unimpressive performance from Liverpool, and Benitez
admitted: "The most important thing is that we have qualified and now have
time to sort a few things out. "When you win you learn, but when you lose
you have to learn also. Perhaps the reasons were that we became nervous.

"For half an hour we played well but after that we didn't look good and
lost a lot of possession."

Benitez continued: "We did not control the game and kept conceding the ball
with easy passes.

"It meant we were always on the back foot and encouraging a good team to
attack us. They were dangerous at the end and when they scored the nerves
were worse. "We didn't play well in attack or defence and we know now that
we must work harder. It is not just a problem for one or two players but
for the whole team and for me. We are all in this together, it is a problem
for us all."

Jamie Carragher said: "We were disappointed with the performance but the
main thing was to be in the draw.

"You've got to give Graz credit, they came to Anfield and played well but
we should have put in a better performance. The manager has only had four
or five games. It will take time, but we were a long way off top form."

Meanwhile, Spanish referee Luis Medina Cantalejo is facing UEFA
disciplinary action after he booked Grazer skipper Rene Aufhauser twice but
failed to send him off.

Aufhauser was clearly cautioned in the 68th and 75th minute for fouls on
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

Afterwards a UEFA spokesman confirmed the match referee's observer would
discuss the incidents with the referee and the fourth official, and said:
"Under UEFA rules we are not able to comment at the moment, but a report
will be sent to UEFA tomorrow for them to consider the incidents."

Liverpool Echo, 25 Aug 2004
Potter's mixed emotions after home debut
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL youngster Darren Potter had mixed emotions after celebrating his
home debut in last night's Champions League qualifier.

The speed of his progression into the first team took the teenager by
surprise. But the defeat wasn't the most memorable way to start what could
be an exciting Anfield career.

The 19-year-old believes the appointment of Rafael Benitez is the reason
behind his promotion to first team duties and he thanked the new boss for
showing faith in Liverpool's emerging talent.

"I was surprised to be playing in some ways, but the way we lined up in the
training session on Monday I knew I had a good chance," revealed Potter, a
former Everton trainee.

"I was nervous towards kickoff but once the match started I felt
comfortable out there. I thought I did quite well. Towards the end I was
tiring but I was happy with my debut.

"The gaffer gave me some advice before the game to just go out there and
not be nervous. Afterwards he told me well done. "The result was the main
problem on the night. I'm sure the supporters would have been expecting a
three or four nil but it wasn't like that. They played well, to be fair to
them."

Benitez has given both Potter and Steve Warnock debuts in the first few
weeks of the season and the midfielder has noted a definite change in
attitude towards the Academy graduates.

He said: "It's a good sign that players like myself and Steve Warnock have
been given a chance. I'm not sure if that would have materialised under the
last gaffer. I'm not sure if he would have given anyone a chance. But the
new man has given us a go straight away which is great for us.

"It didn't get me too down last year because I was only young.

I've had a good year at Melwood now so hopefully I can push on. "I don't
care where I play for the first team."

Double act ready for action
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL'S new Spanish double act Xabi Alonso and Luis Garcia are
relishing the chance to take centre stage for the first time for the Reds
at the weekend.

Rafael Benitez's latest signings are likely to be called into action
against Bolton on Sunday for the first time since their transfers from Real
Sociedad and Barcelona.

Today they told of their delight to be at Anfield - and how they hope to
play a part in reviving Liverpool's fortunes under the new boss.

Alonso said: "I believe this experience is going to be very good. Until now
everything I have seen and been told has excited me a lot.

"I believe my game will fit in well in this team that we are building. I am
going to keep my style and not change the way I play now.

"I don't consider that I'm going to have to work more on the physical side
of my game. It does not bother me to have left La Liga.

"I have had good moments there, but I always think positively and now a
very exciting experience is beginning."

The pair are eligible to play in the Champions League, which Liverpool
qualified for last night despite a stuttering defeat to AK Graz.

But Stephane Henchoz admits he still does not know what his Anfield future
holds after making his first start for Benitez last night.

"You always hope a chance will come but you have to wonder if the boss
wants you or not when he doesn't play you," revealed the defender.

"I've not been reassured about my future but I'm pleased to be back because
it's a long time since I played. I think the last time was April against
Manchester United."

Liverpool progressed into Friday's draw despite a poor performance.

Henchoz added: "It's good to be in the Champions League but not good to
lose at home. We have to play better, but at least we've qualified.

"We lost a goal too early and didn't create many chances.

"It's very important we're in the Champions League. We had a taste of it
two years and now we're back. We can do well in the competition.

"We still have three players to make a debut. We need to improve and last
night showed we still have work to do. "

[lfc-news] Academy: Mannix return is bright spot - Post

Liverpool Daily Post, 24 Aug 2004
Mannix return is bright spot
Academy Football With Chris Wright, Daily Post

IT was a disappointing start to the new FA Premier Academy League season
for Liverpool under-18s as they lost 3-1 to Crystal Palace at the Kirkby
Academy on Saturday.

John Owens's side paid the price for missing a number of chances as the
visitors took all three points.

Palace's opening goal came after goalkeeper Paul Lancaster failed to deal
with a corner and the visitors' striker had a simple tap-in. And just
before half-time midfielder David Mannix was dispossessed just out-side his
own area and Palace added a second to leave them 2-0 ahead at the break.

Republic of Ireland youth international midfielder John-Paul Kelly pulled a
goal back in the second half after a free-kick from Mannix on the right.
Karl Noon and Conal Platt had chances as did substitute Adam Hammill but
all failed to take them. Palace restored their two-goal advantage late on
with a deflected shot off Kelly.

It was not the start Liverpool had been hoping for as the new one-league
Academy format got under way. But at least England youth international
midfielder Mannix did manage to play a full 90 minutes, his first at
Academy level for almost two years after knee ligament damage and a heel
injury.

U18s coach Owens was naturally disappointed by his side's start, but he
said: "It was an even game real-ly, but obviously the score doesn't
indicate that. But we didn't take any of the chances we created - we
created quite a few. We are lacking any real goalscorers this year, but it
is something I knew before the season started. We don't have someone who is
going to score like say (Steven) Gillespie did last year. We need 10
chances to score one really."

He added: "The scoreline was disappointing and at this level it is never
fully right for 90 minutes. There are always gaps where certain things
could have been better. But there were good signs of the ability of the squad.

"Lee Peltier played particularly well at right-back and it was good to see
David Mannix play his first full game."

LIVERPOOL UNDER-18s: Lancaster, Peltier, D Smith, J Smith, O'Donnell,
Barrett, Guthrie, Kelly, Noon (Hammill), C Platt (Frayne), Mannix. Subs:
Townley, Willis, Holmes.

[lfc-news] Morgan's third bid turned down - PA

PA Sport, 24 Aug 2004
MORGAN'S THIRD BID TURNED DOWN

Steve Morgan's third attempt to buy control of Liverpool has been rejected.

The building tycoon's proposal would have given the club £50million for
players and their new stadium.

The Jersey-based Liverpool fanatic, who is having a mansion built in
Cheshire near his Carden Park Hotel complex, has been desperate to take a
controlling interest in the club.

He currently has the club's third biggest shareholding but wants the role
of chairman at Anfield.

Morgan insists talks are still "on going" but admits the current
discussions have "ground to a halt" over the split of the £70million
package he has proposed.

Morgan said: "It's my firm belief that to take it forward from its present
position, the club requires a capital injection of this magnitude in order
to rebuild the squad and provide equity funding for the new stadium. I am
disappointed that the board do not appear to share my view."

Two previous attempts have been rejected where Morgan would have bought
15,000 unissued shares to underwrite a share issue.

This time he has come back with an offer to buy the same amount of shares,
plus Granada's 10% holding and a major part of chairman David Moores'
majority control.

But the deal has been collapsed with a disagreement over the valuation of
shares and Morgan's concerns over the cost of the new stadium at Stanley
Park rising over £100million.

Moores wants his £70million to go to manager Rafael Benitez and the stadium
costs, but that would mean Moores and Granada accepting around £2,000 a
share rather than the £4,000 a share that the recent Thailand bid was
prepared to offer.

To encourage Moores to sell his shares, Morgan may need another £10million.

Moores attended Saturday's home game with Manchester City but did not
travel to watch the opening match at Tottenham or the Champions League
qualifier in Graz a fortnight ago.

Morgan travelled in his own private jet to Austria for that match and was a
significant figure around the team hotel where he was reported to be
discussing his new deal with chief executive Rick Parry.

Those talks had been going on secretly for five weeks before the deal was
rejected but Morgan could still be back with a fourth bid.

Morgan issued a statement through his PR company tonight saying: "Following
recent media speculation and to set the record straight, Merseyside-born
businessman and lifelong Liverpool supporter Steve Morgan today confirmed
that recent discussions with Liverpool regarding a proposed £70 million
share purchase had ground to a halt.

"Behind-the-scenes negotiations had been taking place in recent weeks and
had reached an advanced stage. However, the two sides had failed to agree
on how the £70million investment should be split between the club and
shareholders.

"Mr Morgan's latest offer would have placed £50million directly at the
club's disposal."

PA Sport, 24 Aug 2004
Liverpool 0 Graz AK 1 (Agg: 2-1)

Liverpool stumbled into the group stages of the Champions League after a
painful, embarrassing performance at Anfield.

Rafael Benitez lost his unbeaten record as Liverpool boss and saw all the
frailties that brought him to the club to replace Gerard Houllier.

Graz pulled one goal back in the second half through Mario Tokic and from
then on Liverpool - who had been slow and uninspired throughout - somehow
clung onto their aggregate lead.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez brought in three players who have barely
figured in his opening weeks in control at Anfield for tonight's Champions
League third qualifying round second leg clash.

Stephane Henchoz, Salif Diao and youngster Darren Potter were due to start,
while youngsters Paul Harrison, Stephen Warnock and Zak Whitbread were on
the bench as Benitez carried out his promise to give fringe players the
chance to impress.

With Liverpool 2-0 ahead from the first leg, Benitez no doubt felt he could
take a few risks with a place in the group stages all but assured.

Austrian coach Walter Schachner brought in four players who did not start
the first leg - Mario Bazina, Gernot Sick, Mario Majstorovic and Gernot
Plassnegger.

Diao played alongside Steven Gerrard in the centre of midfield, with
19-year-old Potter making his full debut after coming off the bench in the
first leg in Austria.

The Liverpool-born youngster was not slow to use his speed down the right
to attack Majstorovic, and he instantly had the crowd on his side.

Liverpool's first chance came when Harry Kewell pulled a free-kick back to
Gerrard on the edge of the box, and his low shot flashed inches wide. John
Arne Riise was more wayward from the same distance soon after.

Graz clearly did not feel this was a lost cause and attacked with pace,
particularly down the right.

But both Djibril Cisse and Milan Baros are no slouches in that department
and were more than prepared to run at retreating defenders.

One 40-yard dash from Cisse almost created a chance on the far post for
Gerrard as Liverpool sought the opener that would put the tie beyond the
Austrians.

But Graz then sat back and Liverpool could only build slowly. When they did
attack, top scorer Roland Kollmann kept Sami Hyypia occupied.

Liverpool were struggling to find the space they needed, and Graz continued
to look dangerous on the break.

And when they won a free-kick on the left, Joachim Standfest's curling
delivery into the area was missed by everyone - including goalkeeper Jerzy
Dudek, who was not troubled by a turn and shot from Bazina soon after.

A foul on Baros produced a free-kick for Gerrard to curl into the area,
with Hyypia being just too far away to take advantage of being left unattended.

Baros was next with a stabbed shot which goalkeeper Andreas Schranz
collected with ease, before Emanuel Pogatetz was booked for bringing down
Baros on 34 minutes.

Seconds later Gerrard's through ball gave the Czech the chance of a first
time shot which was blocked in the six-yard box.

As Liverpool's lack of ideas worsened, Benitez plainly became more
frustrated on the line.

His mood was not improved when Potter was booked for a challenge on
Majstorovic which looked to cleanly take the ball.

The danger Graz still possessed appeared again when Kollmann arrived on the
far post to meet a long free kick, and collided painfully with the woodwork
as he attempted to turn the ball home.

The problem for Liverpool was that the longer this uninspired performance
continued, the more confident Graz would become, knowing that even one goal
would stretch the home side's nerves.

And they started the second period more than encouraged to attack Liverpool
with neat inter-passing.

It was Liverpool who were now forced onto the defensive as they continually
gave the ball away.

And the inevitable soon happened when Mario Tokic was given too much time
25 yards out to hit a rising drive that beat Dudek and crashed in off the
bar on 54 minutes.

Benitez had seen enough by 58 minutes and put on another youngster,
Warnock, in place of out-of-touch Kewell.

The goal sparked some life into Liverpool, but Gerrard clearly tried too
hard on one surge into the box and was booked by Spanish referee Medina
Cantalejo for diving, much to the disgust of the Kop.

Plassnegger was booked on 66 minutes for tugging John Arne Riise's shirt
and a minute later Baros and Cisse combined for about the first time all
night for the Frenchman to lift a 12-yard shot over the top.

Captain Rene Aufhauser was then booked for hauling down Gerrard before
Samir Muratovic replaced Plassnegger. Gerrard's short free-kick to Baros
ended with a return ball that the Liverpool man drilled low but was unable
to beat Schranz.

Muratovic was booked for a foul on Gerrard before Benitez hauled off Cisse
on 75 minutes to send on Florent Sinama-Pongolle.

Diao and Sinama-Pongolle both had snap shots that tested Schranz before
Matthias Dollinger came on for Majstorovic.

Eight minutes from time Dudek made a fine save at the foot of a post from a
Kollmann header following Bazina's long cross.

There was confusion late on when it looked as if referee Cantalejo had
booked Aufhauser for a second time and not sent him off, this time for a
second foul on Gerrard.

A minute from time Dietmar Hamann was brought on for Baros to attempt to
shore up a midfield that Graz had been running through regularly.

[lfc-news] Harry fails to fulfil massive promise - Echo

Liverpool Echo, 23 Aug 2004
Harry fails to fulfil massive promise
David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

HARRY KEWELL was the talk of an expectant press box at Anfield on Saturday.

Someone had suggested he was in the frame for penalty-taking duties - and
an army of eager hacks piled on him at 9/1 for first goalscorer.

He let us all down. Not for the first time.

It wasn't that the winger missed any decent openings - the disappointing
Steve Finnan and the promising Djibril Cisse did that. But he flattered to
deceive once again in front of an Anfield audience.

Much of the frustration with Kewell stems from the qualities the Australian
clearly possesses.

Few can strike a ball as cleanly and as crisply, or with as much vicious
intent. There aren't many full-backs who can match him for pace, and his
ability to go around a defender is evident.

But all too often Kewell will beat his man, then check. Not for him the
head-down, single-minded intention of reaching the byline before producing
a damaging cross. He prefers the easier option.

But now could be the time for a critical reassessment - a turning point in
his Anfield career, even.

Because Rafael Benitez is a demanding coach.

He may smile disarmingly. His command of English may still be insufficient
to clearly express his ideas to an assembled press corps. But privately he
knows what he wants - and he has already started to go out and get it.

Antonio Nunez and Luis Garcia are both wide men. True, both prefer to
operate on the right, but Benitez has clearly identified the wide areas as
a weakness in the current Liverpool squad.

And if that doesn't act as a kick up the backside to Kewell nothing will.

In fairness, he wasn't the only Anfield regular to struggle on Saturday -
especially in an opening 45 minutes that showed little, if any, improvement
on some of last season's stale, witless shows at Anfield.

But by the end, the scoreline might have been the same as the last time
Manchester City came to visit, the identity of the winning goalscorer was
the same - Igor Biscan was even introduced as a late substitute again - but
with only 15 seconds remaining that was clearly a time-wasting exercise
rather than a bid to keep City at bay. But there was something noticeably
different.

Liverpool rolled their sleeves up, dug their heels in and came back from a
half-time deficit to win.

Wowee! So what? I can hear you say.

Except May 1999 was the last time a Liverpool team managed that less than
magnificent feat.

Rafael Benitez espouses the theory of teamwork and team spirit at every
available opportunity.

That is largely why he felt it necessary to split up the dressing room
clique led by local stars like Owen and Murphy.

And Saturday provided a very early sign that the lesson is starting to lodge.

Now if only Harry Kewell can embrace some of those lessons as well . . .

Liverpool Echo, 23 Aug 2004
Hamann is up for the fight
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

DIETMAR HAMANN is relishing the fight for his Liverpool place following the
signing of Xabi Alonso.

Hamann was outstanding in Saturday's 2-1 win over Manchester City. But his
performance was timely with Alonso sitting in the stands after completing
his £10.7m move from Real Sociedad.

The German midfielder is considered vulnerable with Alonso sure to be a
first choice once he's eligible to play.

But Hamann says he doesn't feel threatened by the new recruit and hopes his
form will ensure coach Rafa Benitez keeps faith in him.

"The manager has said he wanted a few more options so it was inevitable
we'd be buying more players," said Hamann..

"All I can do is play well whenever I'm selected. That's all I've ever
tried to do. We all understand the team's interests must always come first.

"The manager knows different players will bring different qualities to the
team and that's fine by me.

"That kind of competition is more likely to bring the best out of me. To be
honest, I think we've probably lacked that bit of competition for places
over the last few years. A lot of us have played pretty much in every game
throughout the season.

"I think it's been shown that the top clubs have many players who can play
in the same position because then when someone is injured, there is someone
else who can fill their role. That's what it's all about at the top of
European football."

Liverpool overturned a first half deficit for the first time five years at
Anfield.

Hamann thinks this is a sign that Benitez's tactical changes are already
yielding positive results.

"I knew we weren't the best coming from behind over the last few years but
it's a big surprise that it's been five years since we did it at Anfield,"
said Hamann.

"We flew out of the traps in the second half and played really good
football. I think we could have had a few more goals.

"The gaffer made a few changes and made the point at half-time they'd only
had one shot and it was an unfair score-line. He told us a couple of things
to work on and we turned it around.

"I thought we had a better flow to the game and everyone played better in
the second half.

"In the first half they defended deep and well and didn't give us many
chances. I didn't think they had many chances either so to go in a goal
down at half-time was very disappointing."

Full-back Josemi, meanwhile, is struggling to be fit for tomorrow's
Champions League qualifying round second leg at Anfield.

The Spaniard was injured during Saturday's victory and limped off after an
hour.

New signings Xabi Alonso and Luis Garcia are both ineligible for the visit
of AK Graz, but will be available for Sunday's trip to Bolton Wanderers.

Tomorrow night's game kicks-off at 8.10pm.

Liverpool Daily Post, 23 Aug 2004
Everton ponder double Anfield swoop
By Andy Hunter, Daily Post

DAVID MOYES is considering a double transfer raid on neighbours Liverpool
as Everton brace themselves for a £7million Newcastle move for Joseph Yobo.

The Everton manager has enquired about both Djimi Traore and Steve Finnan
as he looks to rebuild his defence and Liverpool are willing to sell the
pair across Stanley Park.

Traore, 24, is currently recuperating from a torn thigh muscle suffered on
the pre-season tour of America.

But the £500,000 signing from Laval, linked with moves to West Brom and
Bolton earlier in the summer, could make a loan move to Goodison Park with
a view to a permanent deal if Everton meet Liverpool's £1m asking price.

Traore has made 75 appearances for Liverpool but is down the pecking order
at Anfield and would accept the chance to revive his Premiership career at
Goodison Park.

Moyes, meanwhile, is also interested in Republic of Ireland defender Finnan
who has also been made available by new Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez.

Tottenham made attempts to sign the £3.5m full-back last week but, like
Blackburn, have so far only offered Liverpool a loan deal and not the £2m
permanent exit Anfield officials are looking for.

Everton could afford the combined £3m deal if the proposed £20m investment
package goes through this week and releases much-needed transfer funds to
Moyes.

His key defender Yobo, however, is reportedly on Newcastle's wanted list as
they search for a replacement for Jonathan Woodgate.

Newcastle, armed with £13.4m received from Real Madrid for the injury-prone
centre-half, have registered an interest in the Nigerian international once
before. But Moyes would be loathe to lose the £4.5m signing from Marseille
if Newcastle returned with a firm offer before the transfer deadline.

JOSEMI INJURY WORRY
By Steve Hunter

Josemi is a major doubt for Liverpool's Champions League qualifier with AK
Graz on Tuesday night because of a back strain picked up in the 2-1 win
over Manchester City.
The Spanish right back was forced to leave the field in the second half
following a kick to his back and he is a major doubt for Tuesday's match.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez said: "Josemi has a problem with his lower
back. I don't know if he will be available to play on Tuesday and we will
just have to wait and see."
