RAFA UPBEAT AFTER POMPEY VICTORY
By Lee Brown
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has spelled out his side's target after
tonight's vital win at Portsmouth, saying. "We need to pick up three
more points than Everton."
Goals from Fernando Morientes and Luis Garcia were enough to earn the
points on the South Coast, but celebrations will have been tempered by
the news that Everton had beaten Manchester United at Goodison Park. But
Benitez refuses to give up the fight and insists that his side must
focus on what they need to do.
He said, "Everton's result tonight makes it a bit more difficult for us,
but we can't control what happens on other pitches.
"All we know is that we need to collect three more points than Everton
in our last four games and our idea at Crystal Palace on Saturday will
be to win and hope we can reduce the gap."
Liverpool's win is just their fifth away victory in the Premiership this
season and Benitez was satisfied with his side's performance despite
lamenting their failure to increase the size of the margin.
Benitez said, "We deserved this win tonight and the players controlled
the game, but we should have scored more.
"When you dominate a game but only have a one goal lead there is always
the chance of a surprise at the end. We had so many chances tonight and
John Arne Riise could have had a hatrick."
On the exclusion of Steven Gerrard from the starting line up, Benitez
said, "We have a lot of games coming up and we have to take that into
account when we're picking the team. I will need to speak to Steven and
decide whether he plays on Saturday."
