Young guns are primed for Reds
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

RAFA BENITEZ has vowed to keep faith with his young guns in tomorrow's
Carling Cup showdown with Middlesbrough.

Benitez confirmed he will be resting Xabi Alonso, Didi Hamann and Luis
Garcia in the fourth round tie at Anfield.

Neil Mellor, Zak Whitbread, Darren Potter and Stephen Warnock will get the
chance to repeat their efforts from the last round.

"I will use all the youngsters. I have the same idea as against Millwall,"
said Benitez. "Igor Biscan and Salif Diao will play.

Xabi and others will rest.

"We have to think of all the competitions and it would be impossible to do
well in them all with the same players every game.

"I think the fans would agree with me that in terms of importance, it's the
Premiership, then Champions League, then the FA Cup and then the Carling Cup.

"We want to win all the tournaments, but there are priori-ties. I won't
take risks in the Carling Cup, especially now we have lost (Milan) Baros,
although I think he'll be back next week."

Benitez remains upbeat, despite the weekend loss to Birmingham.

"I understand why the supporters are disappointed with Saturday because we
were growing each week as a team," he admitted..

"I don't know if the problem was with our strikers, because Birmingham were
aggressive in their defence or we weren't fresh enough.

"It was certainly more difficult, but we still had four great
opportunities. Sometimes you need to win even when you don't play well.

"We've lost the chance to use our game in hand to make progress but I'm
sure our level will continue to improve."
