Emlyn loses cancer fight
By Jon Tunney, Liverpool Echo
TRIBUTES were today being paid to Liverpool legend Emlyn Hughes, who lost
his fight with cancer this morning.
The 57-year-old, who died at his Sheffield home with his family at his
bedside, had fought a 15-month battle with the cancerous brain tumour he
once described as a "nasty little bugger".
Today his wife Barbara said his condition had deteriorated in the last few
days.
"He died at his home in Sheffield with his family around him," she added.
Despite his increasingly poor health he continued in public life until last
month when he made his last appearance, at a dinner in his honour.
Today family friend David Hayes told the ECHO: "Although Emlyn was
obviously very unwell his spirit was never broken."
Mr Hayes organised last month's tribute evening for the Emlyn Hughes Cancer
Appeal in Sheffield.
"He was determined to make it to the charity evening," he said. His wife
Barbara pushed him in his wheelchair while a slideshow of his career was
being shown.
"First of all he was going to be staying for 20 minutes, then it was half
an hour. Finally he ended up staying the whole night because he was so
determined to help.
"We raised more than £20,000 that night and Emlyn was a big part of it.
"He was well-known and well-loved in Dore village - nothing was too much
trouble for him.
"Whenever there was a store to be opened, a village society event, a cubs
or a scouts do, Emlyn would be there. He will be sadly missed by everyone
in Dore."
Rick Parry, chief executive of Liverpool Football Club, said: "Our deepest
sympathies go out to wife Barbara, children Emma and Emlyn junior, and the
rest of the family at this sad time."
A club spokesman said: "Those lucky enough to see him play will recall his
boundless enthusiasm, 100% commitment to the cause and unrelenting passion
for the club whenever he had the Liver Bird close to his chest."
The club confirmed it will hold a one-minute silence before tomorrow
night's Carling Cup tie against Middlesbrough at Anfield.
Liverpool fans were also paying tribute to the man they nicknamed Crazy Horse.
Glen Williams, from Crosby, said: "He should be given the credit he is very
rarely accorded - his medals go before him.
"He was a tremendous player and a pretty nice fellow.
"He was a very good player in a great team. An important part of the jigsaw
and he led by example.
"I'm sure all Liverpool fans will wish his family well."
