The Reds continued their winning form in the Premiership at City on
Saturday afternoon. For the first time in over two years they have
managed to string together four league wins on the bounce. The Reds
were the better side overall in a poor match and deserved the narrow
one goal win.

City got the game underway and were the better side early on in the
game. Joey Barton, back for City looked to dominate the centre of
the pitch as the Reds seemed to struggle early doors. What the Reds
did have though once again was a bit of extra class at the back so
whatever City threw at the Reds they coped with well. Hyypia was in
no mood to stop the run of clean sheets.

City did have a glorious chance on thirteen minutes to open the
scoring and Vassell really should have done. He headed just wide
from a Musampa cross. A big let off for the Reds there though. It
jolted the Reds a bit into trying to control the play more. They
slowly started to get hold of the game and for the first half at
least it made for a bit of a stalemate. Neither side were creating
clear cut chances and certainly not hitting the target when anything
came along.

Djibril Cisse had the best chance of the half for the Reds but he
dithered too much getting the ball on to his preferred foot and shot
tamely at James who gathered easily. And that pretty much sums up
the first half other than Cisse picked up a booking for dissent
after he fouled Ireland. The ref had got a fair few decisions wrong
on the day to which he always seemed determined to balance one bad
mistake up with an equally bad one to the other side. How some
throws were given one way or the other is beyond me. Clear
deflections off a player seemed to go un-noticed.

The Reds came out for the second half and were looking to a change
straight away. The half started though with Kewell half stripped and
ready for action. Within five minutes of the half starting Kewell
indeed came on for Djibril Cisse who walked off with a bewildered
look on his face. He obviously couldn't understand why he was going
off. In truth Kewell played well though when he was on for what he
saw of the ball. He's starting to look like he wants to really get
involved a bit more these days and perhaps had he worn some decent
studs he wouldn't have landed on his backside quite so often either.

The Reds grabbed the only goal of the game on sixty minutes and it
was a well worked move that created it. The ball was on the far
right for the Reds but a cross field low pass to Riise started the
ball moving. Riise played it off to Gerrard and then continued his
run. Mills was now lost from marking Riise who rammed the return
ball home past David James. Now the Reds could really control the
game and continue the winning streak.

The game became very stop start if anything with subs being made all
over the place and little decent action in between. Garcia came on
for Riise on seventy six and Morientes followed for Crouch four
minutes later. The Reds though were now in control of the game but
of course at 1-0 you never fully relax.

In the closing minutes Pepe Reina did as much to heighten the nerves
as well when he let a long ball bounce before kicking it out for a
corner. However, even with David james having come forward the Reds
couldn't be broken and as the final whistle went the Reds cheered
another victory. This is their first at City's new ground and on the
day well deserved.

MotM : Sami Hyypia - commanding as he can be at the back there was
nothing getting past the big Finn on the day.
