RAFA SURPRISED BY FERGIE LETTER

Rafael Benitez has revealed he received an unusual congratulatory letter
from Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson following the Reds' Champions
League success last season.

Benitez admits he was swamped with 'well done' messages from friends and
colleagues throughout the footballing world following the magnificent
events in Istanbul, but he was left slightly bemused by Fergie's note.

He told Marca: "I received congratulations from people all over England
and Spain.

"Ferguson sent me a very strange one with a tactical evaluation - on his
personalised paper - of Liverpool's performance in the whole
competition, and particularly the final."

Benitez is now looking to the future and determined to improve his squad
ahead of the new season.

But he insists new Valencia midfielder Edu was never on his target list,
despite speculation to the contrary in Spain.

"The next objective is to make a good team who can be competitive," he
added.

"The reality is that we have a lot to improve, that there have to be
some changes. It's necessary to revitalise the squad and strengthen some
positions."

He added: "Despite what was said, we did not make any efforts to sign
Edu, it was part of the efforts to try and undermine us," he added.
