From Inter Milan to Panathinaikos - highs and low of Liverpool's
European Cup semis
By Chris Wright, Daily Post

LIVERPOOL make their seventh appearance in the semi-finals of Europe's
premier cup competition against Chelsea.

The previous six have produced some stunning displays as the Reds
marched on to the final on five occasions.

Here we look back on Liverpool's appearances in the last four.

LIVERPOOL v INTER MILAN
(May 1965, H 3-1 A 0-3 Inter won 4-3 on aggregate)
THE infamous home leg against the Italian champions and European Cup
holders Inter Milan has gone down in Anfield folklore. Great European
nights take their reference point from this night.

Four days after Liverpool had won the FA Cup for the first time, beating
Leeds 2-1 after extra-time, Anfield was packed to the rafters long
before kick-off.

When the Cup was paraded around the stadium by the injured pair Gordon
Milne and Gerry Byrne the noise reached defeaning proportions. It
frightened Inter and Liverpool took an early lead through Roger Hunt.

Inter equalised through Mazzola, but further goals from Ian Callaghan
and Ian St John gave Liverpool a 3-1 victory. They also had a superb
Chris Lawler effort ruled out as Geoff Strong was in an offside position.

It proved crucial as Liverpool lost 3-0 in Milan. Shankly was livid as
Inter scored one goal direct from an indirect free-kick and another was
kicked out of keeper Tommy Lawrence's hand.

LIVERPOOL v FC ZURICH
(April 1977, A 3-1 H 3-0 Liverpool won 6-1 on agg)
HAVING knocked out the favourites and the previous year's beaten
finalists St Etienne in a pulsating quarter-final won by substitute
David Fairclough's memorable late goal in front of the Kop, FC Zurich
held little fear for Bob Paisley's side.

A thoroughly professional performance saw Liverpool put one foot in the
final in Rome after the first leg in Switzerland. Two goals from Phil
Neal, one a penalty, and another from Steve Heighway saw Liverpool win 3-1.

The return at Anfield saw Liverpool coast to another comfortable 3-0
win. Jimmy Case hit two and Kevin Keegan a third to set up a clash with
Borussia Moenchengladbach in the Eternal City, a repeat of Liverpool's
first European final in four years earlier. Then Bill Shankly's side
triumphed 3-2 on aggregate in the UEFA Cup, this time Bob Paisley's men
won their first European Cup 3-1 with goals from Terry McDermott, Tommy
Smith and a Neal penalty.

LIVERPOOL v BORUSSIA MOENCHENGLADBACH
(April 1978, A 1-2 H 3-0 Liverpool won 4-2 on agg)
THE Germans must have been sick of the sight of the redshirted men from
Anfield. Two final defeats in four years had left them with an
inferiority complex. But they weren't going down without a fight as they
won the first leg 2-1.

David Johnson's late away goal was expected to prove vital. In the end
it wasn't needed in the end, but it gave Liverpool the fall-back to
produce another stunning European performance. Goals from Ray Kennedy,
Kenny Dalglish and Jimmy Case eased Liverpool into a Wembley final with
Belgium champions Bruges.

Dalglish chipped in the only goal as Liverpool became the first English
side to win back-to-back European Cups.

LIVERPOOL v BAYERN MUNICH
(April 1981, H 0-0 A 1-1, Liverpool won on away goals)
TOO old, past it and going out of Europe. That was the claim Bayern
Munich and in particular their captain Paul Brietner made after a tense
first leg at Anfield ended goalless.

The return in the Olympic Stadium was another tight affair and looked to
be heading for another stalemate.

The introduction of winger Howard Gayle saw him terrorise the German
defence, but when they began to use foul means to stop him he seemed to
be lose his cool. Paisley substituted him before he was sent off.

Ray Kennedy scored late on, and despite a Bayern equaliser, Liverpool
won through on the away goals rule.

Alan Kennedy scored against Real Madrid in the final in the Parc des
Princes to give Liverpool a third European Cup.

LIVERPOOL v DINAMO BUCHAREST
(April 1984, H 1-0 A 2-1 Liverpool won 3-1 on agg)
SAMMY LEE scored the only goal of a tough battle with the Romanian
champions at Anfield.

Bucharest used some rough tactics to try to win, but while they could
give it they couldn't take it. The Romanians were incensed and claimed
the Graeme Souness had elbowed their player, which he denied at the
time, but later admitted.

The second leg saw a torrent of abuse rain down on Souness. But the
Liverpool captain thrived on it and while he was centre of attention,
Ian Rush grabbed two goals in a 2-1 victory to send Liverpool to Rome again.

Phil Neal scored in a 1-1 draw against AS Roma at their home ground
before the final went to penalties which Liverpool won 4-2 thanks to
Bruce Grobbelaar's wobbly legs and Alan Kennedy's final spot-kick.

LIVERPOOL v PANATHINAIKOS
(April 1985, H 4-0 A 1-0 Liverpool won 5-0 on agg)
THE Greeks supporters made for another great Anfield occasion with their
wall noise, colour and fervour in the first leg. It was matched by the
Kop, but on the pitch Panathinaikos were no match for Joe Fagan's side.

Liverpool went 3-0 up through John Wark and two more from Ian Rush. A
4-0 win was completed with a stunning bullet header from Jim Beglin.

Mark Lawrenson scored in a 1-0 win in Athens as the Reds went through to
a fifth final.

Sadly Liverpool's hopes of winning a fifth European crown were rendered
meaningless by the tragic events prior to the final with Juventus at the
Heysel Stadium: 39 supporters, including 32 Italians, four French, two
Belgians and another from Northern Ireland were killed after a wall
collapsed as they tried to flee some charging Liverpool supporters.
