Spanish stars can lift Reds - Alonso
By David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

XABI ALONSO has preached the virtues of a new Anglo-Spanish relationship at
Anfield.

The £10.7m signing from Real Sociedad is one of four Spanish stars to
follow coach Rafael Benitez to the club this summer - and he believes the
newcomers can join the established players to revive Liverpool.

"Benitez has told us to mix in with the other players and to learn
English," he said. "I do not believe that it is detrimental to have a
number of Spaniards at the club.

"This is a new project, with a new manager and new players. It is necessary
to get to know each other and, if we obtain the ideas that the manager
wants, I believe that we are going to be a good team."

Alonso already feels assimilated at Anfield, after just one match in a red
shirt.

"I have noticed all the younger fans wear the shirt in the street and in
Anfield there is a special atmosphere," he added.

"What hit me even more was that before making my debut or being presented
as a Liverpool player, I saw people walking around with my name on the back
of their shirts.

"I am very contented in Liverpool. I have not been here long, but
everything has gone very well. They have treated me phenomenally well.

"It is a change and a new experience but I am prepared to adapt fast."
Alonso is on international duty tomorrow for Spain in Bosnia-Herzegovina,
before preparing for his home debut on Saturday against West Brom.
