DUDEK: WE'RE MUCH HAPPIER UNDER RAFA
By Paul Eaton
Jerzy Dudek has revealed there is a completely different atmosphere at
Anfield this season following the arrival of Rafael Benitez.
The Polish goalkeeper, who will face England in Katowice on Wednesday
night, says everyone at the club is refreshed and raring to improve on last
season's fourth placed Premiership finish.
He said: "Last year was quite depressing. When the team is not doing well
it is difficult for everyone, not just the coaches.
"When the team is doing well the atmosphere is immediately different. That
helps to get results. Now we have much more freshness in the training. The
coach wants us up for it, to play quicker and to have some kind of idea of
what we're doing.
"Everything takes time, to learn new things, but I think it is getting
better and better. Everyone is trying to make an impression on the new
coach and maybe that is why everyone is so positive.
"The new manager is more relaxed. I think everyone is enjoying it more. A
goalkeeper needs to be relaxed to make great saves in games and in
training, to have a clear mind about his position. It is not good going
into a match thinking: 'If I make a mistake what will happen?' That doesn't
help me or Chris (Kirkland).
"That's how I felt last season - but that time is gone. We have a new coach
and new things to learn. I am more happy now."
Meanwhile, Dudek reckons he is 'hated' by England fans for keeping Chris
Kirkland out of the Liverpool team.
Dudek believes Kirkland would play for his country if he was playing more
regularly for Liverpool - but he insists there can be no room for sentiment
in football.
He said: "It is a tough competition with Chris and I know the fans would
prefer to see him in goal at Liverpool because of his position with England.
"They probably hate me for that - but I like to play as well, so I'm sorry.
We are good friends but only one of us can play.
"That competition is good and if I play badly, it is up to coach Rafael
Benitez to make a decision."
