REDS SIGN ALONSO AND GARCIA

Liverpool have announced the signings of Spanish duo Xabi Alonso from Real
Sociedad and Luis Garcia from Barcelona.
Both players signed in at Anfield today after successfully completing
medicals. They have each signed a five year contract.

Neither player will be involved against Manchester City tomorrow or against
AK Graz on Tuesday.

Benitez said about Garcia: "He is a skilful player with a lot of talent and
an attacking mentality."

"He can play on the right or left side or just off the striker. Last season
he scored seven goals for Barcelona and he has always scored goals wherever
he has been.

"He played for me at Tenerife on the left wing and scored 16 goals. He
comes here as a player the manager knows very well.

"He will give us more possibilities in attack and it's important to have
that kind of player at Liverpool. He is a different player to what we have
at the moment.

"Barcelona didn't want him to come here but we paid the money needed for
his buy-out clause and when that happens the club cannot say no if the
player says yes."


Garcia has been allocated squad number 10 at Anfield while Alonso will wear
the number 14 shirt.
