Alonso flies in for Reds medical
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

XABI ALONSO was heading to Merseyside today to undergo a medical ahead of
his £10.7m move from Real Sociedad.

Liverpool face a race against time to complete the deal in time for the
midfielder to be eligible to face Manchester City. Alonso will have to
complete his medical, and sign and receive international clearance before
noon tomorrow to make his debut at Anfield.

That's unlikely and the trip to Bolton is now a more realistic target, but
Rafael Benitez will be delighted to secure the services of one of Spain's
hottest properties.

Alonso will be hoping for better luck than his compatriot Antonio Nunez
whose first day's training ended in agony yesterday.

A light practice session hours before his planned debut for Liverpool
reserves was brought to an abrupt end when he twisted his knee.

An immediate x-ray revealed there's been no fracture on the knee. But a
further scan today will reveal the extent of ligament damage.

Benitez is hoping Nunez will be out weeks rather than months.

"It's desperately disappointing for Antonio," a club spokesman said today.

"Naturally, the player is gutted. He would have made his debut for the
reserves last night and was in contention to play some part in this
weekend's Premiership game against Manchester City. We will know more about
the extent of his injury later today."

The saga of El-Hadji Diouf's move to Bolton was expected to be resolved
today. He is likely to sign a year's loan at the Reebok.

Portsmouth have also reignited their interest in Salif Diao. The Senegal
midfielder is available for transfer, although Pompey may also seek a loan deal.
