Reds making headway in contract talks
By David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL have finally opened contract talks with skipper Steven Gerrard
and preliminary discussions have been described as 'constructive'.

Jamie Carragher has also sat down and started to discuss a new deal as
the Reds seek to secure the long term future of their two local born stars.

Both players have two years left on their existing deals and are both
represented by Struan Marshall.

He met Reds chief executive Rick Parry yesterday and further talks will
be planned in the near future.

Liverpool are seeking an early resolution to the Gerrard situation in
particular, with their Champions League qualifying round clash with
Total Network Solutions due to be played at Anfield on July 13.

Meanwhile, FIFA President Sepp Blatter has repeated his belief that
Liverpool will take part in the World Club Championship in Japan in
December.

It was revealed earlier this month that Liverpool do no intend to take
part in the showpiece, with Benitez believing it would be an unhelpful
distraction and difficult journey to make at a key time in the
Premiership and hopefully the Champions League campaign too.

However, Blatter said before last night's Confederations Cup Final
between Brazil and Argentina: "We have regulations. The winner of the
Champions League is automatically qualified and I have no doubt they
will play."

Liverpool have made no comment on FIFA's stance.
