Dudek to recover for Toon clash
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo
JERZY DUDEK is expected to be fit to take his place at Newcastle this
weekend, despite a seriously gashed shin.
The Polish keeper had 10 stitches during the Carling Cup final and
rookie Scott Carson was withdrawn from reserve action earlier this week
as a precaution.
However, manager Rafa Benitez wants to keep Carson out of the firing
line as Liverpool pursue Champions League football.
Benitez thinks it's too early to thrust the Under-21 international into
the fray and is banking on Dudek to play through the pain barrier as he
did so impressively during the later stages at Cardiff.
The Spanish coach wants to protect his inexperienced signing from Leeds
for as long as possible, and thinks the pressure Liverpool are under to
finish in the top four makes it an unsuitable time for Carson to be
handed his debut.
Unless Dudek's condition gets worse, or he picks up another injury, the
Pole is guaranteed his place for the rest of the season.
Meanwhile, Harry Kewell could make a surprise recovery from an ankle
injury in time to face Newcastle this weekend.
The Aussie midfielder asked to be substituted during the defeat to
Chelsea last weekend, but returned to training with the rest of the
squad yesterday.
Liverpool are monitoring the winger's fitness ahead of the trip North
East, but he still hasn't been ruled out.
Manager Rafa Benitez is known to be frustrated by the catalogue of
injury complaints from the midfielder.
He's unlikely to be impressed if the knock which ended his match at
Cardiff wasn't too serious.
