Mellor is ruled out for the season

NEIL MELLOR will have an operation on his troublesome knee problems
today - and become the fifth Liverpool player to have his season ended
prematurely in the process.

The Anfield striker (right) has been forced to undergo surgery on both
knees after being afflicted by tendonitis for several months.

Liverpool had hoped to avoid such drastic action with a period of rest.
But a six-week lay-off failed to ease the problem and now Mellor has
been ruled out of action for the rest of the season.

It is a devastating setback for the 22-year-old, who finally looked to
have made a first team breakthrough this season. Mellor has scored five
goals in 16 appearances for Rafael Benitez's side, including crucial
contributions against Arsenal and Olympiakos.

His last appearance, however, came in the FA Cup exit at Burnley on
January 18 and today's operation will consign Mellor to the growing list
of players whose season is already over.

Djibril Cisse and Florent Sinama-Pongolle are out with respective broken
leg and cruciate injuries while Xabi Alonso (ankle) and Chris Kirkland
(back) have only an outside chance of playing again this term.
