Rafael Benitez has revealed he is 'very close' to signing his first new player of 2005.

The Reds' boss is refusing to confirm which player he hopes to bring to Anfield during this month's transfer window, with Fernando Morientes, Nicolas Anelka and Mauricio Pellegrino all being heavily linked with moves to Merseyside.

But the Reds are hoping to make at least one signing to bolster a squad which has been ravaged by injuries since the start of the season.

He said: "We are hopeful of making a signing and we are very close. But it's important that we get the right players as it's not always about signing the best players, but the players you need.

"I don't want to talk about names because it is always easy to talk. I prefer to sign the player and then talk about it afterwards.

"We would like to strengthen and we are working very hard to do so. We are improving all the time and hopefully we can keep moving in that direction.
