Owens looks to side's character
Academy football with Chris Wright, Daily Post
WITH two draws in their last two fixtures, Liverpool under-18s look to
claim their first victory since October 9 against Manchester United at the
Kirkby Academy tomorrow (kick-off 11am).
John Owens's side have won only three matches this season, but two
hard-earned draws in their last two FA Premier Academy League matches
against Everton and Crewe last Saturday mean they go into the match with
some confidence.
Inconsistency has been a problem, although several players have been
performing with credit, especially midfielders Danny Guthrie and Paul
Barratt, who combined for Liverpool's goal at Crewe.
And Owens knows his side must perform to the best of their abilities to get
a result against their traditional enemies from down the M62.
He said: "They are always good games and certainly when I went with the
reserve side and saw the strength of their reserve team, it was very good.
We are looking forward to another good game of football and a good test."
The two draws in recent weeks have given the side more confidence and they
will expect to continue their improved form.
Owens added: "The lads have showed a bit of character in recent matches,
showing they are not letting themselves slip and lose the game. That has
been pleasing in both the last two matches, but it would be good to push on
and get that win."
With Liverpool due to start their FA Youth Cup campaign in the next month,
their lengthy injury list may cause problems.
Owens said: "We are going to need to have a couple of under-16s coming into
the squad for the Youth Cup because the U19 players can't play in it and
Lee Peltier is out for three months with a back injury.
"But the better the matches go before that, the better the confidence will
be going into the match."
