Barrett rescues point for U18s
Academy football with Chris Wright, Daily Post

PAUL BARRETT'S goal gave Liverpool under-18s a point as they drew 1-1 with
Crewe Alexandra at the Kirkby Academy on Saturday.

After going behind from a free-kick on 20 minutes John Owens's side were
level 10 minutes later thanks to midfielder Barrett.

He ran through into the box to latch on to an excellent through ball from
fellow central midfielder Danny Guthrie, before finishing well underneath
the Crewe keeper.

Despite being the better side in the first half, Liverpool failed to take
the half-chances that fell their way.

Disappointingly the second half failed to spark and neither side looked
like going on to win the match.

It is the second draw in a row for the U18s, but they are at least starting
to show some improvement in form.

Owens said: "I thought they started more brightly, and scored. But Paul
Barrett scored from a well-timed run and pass from Danny Guthrie, which got
us back into the match.

"I thought we had played the better football than them in the first half
and I was looking forward to the second for us to press on. But actually I
thought both teams couldn't reach the heights of the first half.

"The second half was a dull part of the game and I was a bit disappointed
we were unable to get ourselves a winning goal.

"We had play in their box and they had play in our box in the second half
but it didn't seem as controlled as what we had in the first half."

He added: "It is still a case of that at too many moments too many players
play too individually and not enough as a team. In the times when we did
play as a team we opened them up and gave ourselves some chances. But we
didn't do that consistently enough."

LIVERPOOL UNDER-18s: Lancaster; J Smith, D Smith, O'Donnell, Threlfall;
Wilkie, Guthrie, Barrett, C Platt (Townley 70); Noon (Frayne 70), Hammill.
Subs: Willis, Carroll.
