Carson wins swift call-up to England squad
By Andy Hunter, Daily Post

SCOTT CARSON was last night celebrating a rapid elevation into the
England squad - only five Premiership starts into his professional career.

Liverpool's teenage goalkeeper has started only three league games and
one Champions League tie for Rafael Benitez's side since his £750,000
move from Leeds in January.

But his commanding progress has been rewarded with a place in the 22-man
squad to travel to the United States at the end of this month.

Carson has been called up by Sven-Goran Eriksson to replace the injured
Paul Robinson, and takes his place alongside reinstated first choice
David James and Robert Green of Norwich.

The FA had to negotiate the 19-year-old's release with Liverpool due to
the clash of dates with the European Cup final.

England are due to travel to the United States 24 hours before Liverpool
take on AC Milan in Istanbul, a factor in the withdrawal of Steven
Gerrard and Jamie Carragher from the two-match tour.

But Carson has been granted special dispensation to fly out to America
immediately after the May 25 final - meaning he will miss Liverpool's
homecoming celebrations should they triumph over Carlo Ancelotti's side.

England face the United States on May 28 before concluding their season
against Columbia three days later.

And Carson's place on the tour, despite the plethora of absentees, is
another indication of his rich promise.

The Whitehaven-born stop-per made only two Premier-ship starts for Leeds
before Benitez beat Chelsea to his signature in the transfer window.

Liverpool are poised to bring Villarreal's Jose Reina to Anfield in an
£8million deal this summer, a move that will cast doubt over the
long-term futures of Jerzy Dudek and Chris Kirkland.
