Morientes to miss Burnley cup test

FERNANDO MORIENTES will have to wait for his next chance to improve his
match sharpness after being declared ineligible for tomorrow's FA Cup
tie with Burnley.

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is preparing to unleash his youngsters at
Turf Moor anyway, but he could have been tempted to offer his new
signing more practice as he works his way to full fitness.

Unfortunately, only players signed before the original, postponed
fixture are allowed to play.

An FA spokesman confirmed today: "Fernando Morientes will not be
eligible to play for Liverpool against Burnley tomorrow. Only players
signed by noon on Friday, January 7 would be available for selection
under FA rules."

Mauricio Pellegrino also wasn't registered in time to play in the third
round.

Following a demoralising defeat to Manchester United, Benitez is set to
look towards his young guns.

David Raven, Stephen Warnock, John Welsh, Neil Mellor and Zak Whitbread
were all included in the line-up before a water-logged pitch washed out
the first attempt to play the game.

Skipper Steven Gerrard will be rested.

Benitez will also welcome back Josemi into the squad, who's been out for
the last six weeks with a knee injury.

Liverpool will make a final attempt to lure Scott Carson from Leeds this
week, although they face a battle with Chelsea to secure the
19-year-old's signature.

The Reds have already had £250,000 offer turned down as Leeds value the
teenager at £1m.

Carson is out-of-contract at the end of the season, but the Reds need
goalkeeping cover now, as Jerzy Dudek's latest mishap underlined at the
weekend.
