RESERVES LOSE TO CITY
By Steve Hunter in Graz

Liverpool Reserves crashed to defeat in their opening match of the season
when they went down 1-0 to Manchester City at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground.
Igor Biscan was the star name on show in the Liverpool side and can be
pleased with another decent display in the centre of midfield alongside
captain John Welsh.

Hughie McAuley's side had their moments in the game but lacked the final
ball to open up the City defence who had Casper Schmeichel, son of Danish
legend Peter, in goal.

Reds reserve boss Hughie McAuley said: "We had a young team out and I
thought we did okay without really hurting City.

"We passed the ball well at times and Igor and John Welsh worked ever so
hard in midfield but unfortunately we let ourselves down at times in the
final third of the field.

"I thought James Smith and Danny O'Donell from the Academy did well as a
centre half pairing and Igor Biscan once again had a good game.

"John Welsh worked hard and gave an energetic display and showed a good
attitude. His time will come again if he keeps working hard and showing the
desire that is needed."

McAuley also revealed that Republic of Ireland Under-21 international
winger Richie Partridge is close to fitness after his serious injury and
could play a part in the reserves away match at Middlesbrough which has
been switched to next Wednesday night. Striker Neil Mellor is also
recovering well from his knee problem and should be ready for a match again
in around two week's time.

Liverpool Reserves v Manchester Citz: Luzi, Otsemobor, Butler (Lee
Peltier), James Smith, Biscan, O'Donnell, Guthrie, Welsh, Smyth, Platt
(Wilkie), Foy. Subs: Harrison, Danny Smith.
