Deportivo Saprissa are the Reds' first opponents in the
Championship. Their history is that they were formed back in 1935 in
San Jose, Costa Rica.

Honours wise they have won 23 Costa Rican league titles. That have
twice won the Central American Championships and won the CONCACAF on
three occassions. They last won that earlier this year which is how
they qualified for the tournament. In order to play the Reds they
have so far beaten Sydney United 1-0.

The club was recently bought out when in 2003 Jorge Vergara took
control. He hails from Mexico and also owns Chivas USA. The teams'
head coach is Hernan Medord and star player for them is striker
Ronald Gomez. The side is best known to people as the Purple
Monsters.

Team Stats : This is the third time the Reds have taken part in the
World Club Championship. The other two occasions the Reds have lost
in 1981 and 1984. Flamengo defeated the Reds 3-0 in December 1981.
Then in 1984 Independientes defeated the Reds by a single goal to
nil in Tokyo.

A win for the Reds would be the 50th win under the reign of Rafa
Benitez. This is his 90th game in charge of the Reds.

Should the Reds keep a clean sheet in this game it will set a new
club record of eleven clean sheets on the bounce. They last conceded
a goal against Crystal Palace when going out fo the League cup on
October 25th. If the Reds last at least 75 minutes of the game
without conceding it will take them past the 1000 minute marker.

Player Stats : Luis Garcia will hope to score his 20th goal for the
Reds in this game.

Fernando Morientes is one goal shy of double figures in a Liverpool
shirt.
