Garcia winning the race to face Toom

LUIS GARCIA could make a surprise return to the Liverpool side for the
visit of Newcastle on Sunday.

The Spanish forward returned to training this week, and Rafa Benitez is
confident Garcia will be declared available.

Liverpool still have two more training sessions before the game and
Benitez is keen for Garcia to return to action as soon as possible.

The 26-year-old has been out for three weeks with a hamstring strain,
suffered during the recent Champions League defeat to Monaco.

"Luis is training normally and I think he can play against Newcastle.
Igor Biscan is fit again too," said Benitez today.

"The only players who won't be available are Vladimir Smicer and Djibril
Cisse."

Graeme Souness' side are in a similar position to the Reds having been
expected to challenge for a Champions League position but struggled for
consistent results.

Benitez believes both club will be fighting for a position higher up the
league in the New Year.

He said: "We know we are playing a good side and it's an important
fixture for both our situations.

"We need to get nearer to the top four. If we win, we can close the gap
and keep ourselves ahead of Newcastle who are another side I am sure
will push higher up the table.

"It's important for the future of the season we enjoy a good result."
